re you frazzled? You probably are. Everybody is. All of us, worrying about how busy we are, worrying about how stressed we are, worrying about how to cope with all the worry. None of us more thanRuby Wax, who invented the term, and whose own mental health struggles she has harnessed to create comedy – as well as to provide actual relief for fellow strugglers. American-born Wax has lived in Notting Hill for many years and she has been a famous tv face and a comedy writer for many years, and her honest and hilarious account of her own experience endears her to us all. She's on stage this month with her one woman show, Frazzled, based on her book A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled – and I was lucky to fit a quick chat with her into her busy schedule, where she talked breathlessly about neuroscience, Alan Rickman, family life, mental health and having a monk as a lodger. Read all about her on page 20. In addition, this issue is full of subjects as diverse as plywood, nightclub design, dressing rooms and dining on rooftops. Enjoy the start of summer. ◆

Wax LYRICAL

Ruby Wax is frazzled. Who isn't? We catch up with her ahead of her new show that fuses comedy and mindfulness Interview Pendle Harte

PENDLE HARTE: How frazzled are you today, Ruby? RUBY WAX: Not frazzled at all! I do have to write a book, but that’s a pleasure and it’s so interesting that it doesn’t feel like a job. It’s called How To Be Human and I’m writing it with a monk and a neuroscientist. It has all the answers.

work the muscle in your brain. Oxford University offers a master’s programme in Mindfuness and Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) so I thought there must be something to it. I only did it because they offered it at Oxford. PH: Tell us about the show? RW: It’s a comedy. You can give good information when you make people laugh. Bill Bryson does it and he’s my hero, dotting everything through with comedy. I go off piste a lot. The show isn’t about depression at all – you can’t keep on about the same thing. There are lots of kids in the audience – it isn’t old fans. It’s a fantastically entertaining show that remains conversational as well as being funny and insightful. It’s your passport to saner living. I might not be sane myself but I do a pretty good imitation.

PH: That sounds promising. What are the answers? RW: A lot of the book is their conversation. Part of our brain still functions as if it is hundreds of thousands of years ago and we haven’t yet learned to adjust our dials for the 21st century. That's why we're frazzled. PH: What is the definition of frazzled? RW: We’re all frazzled. Everybody is. It’s not being stressed, it’s thinking about stress. It’s getting stressed about stress. It’s thinking ‘why have I only got 15,000 friends on Facebook?’ and ‘why don’t I make enough money?’ We’re living in such a wired society and everybody feels that way. Even kids do. PH: Your book Frazzled advises mindful methods. Do they work long term? RW: You have to keep pumping it – it’s like going to the gym. You have to

BEING FRAZZLED isn't

being stressed – it's getting stressed about stress

PH: Is it going well? RW: So far it’s more popular than any of my other shows. I have hit the zeitgeist with the subject and it’s not a lecture – it’s funny. It’s totally scripted but I make it feel spontaneous, and then I let the audience talk and it really is spontaneous. PH: Do you find it exhausting? RW: No! Because I love it. I go out during the interval and talk to people – hearing

parties and making SMALL TALK

– that's exhausting. Doing the show isn't their stories will never drain me. I hate cocktail parties and talking to people about how successful they are and making small talk – that’s exhausting. PH: When did you first notice you were funny? RW: Alan Rickman told me when we were at the RSC. I wanted to be a classical actress and he told me it wouldn’t happen and that I should write some comedy instead. I knew at high school that I never got the good-looking boys and that being funny was my ammo. These days, at home, I’m not just funny – I’m an object of total ridiculousness. PH: What does a normal day look like for you? RW: There is no normal day. I do these eclectic jobs – this Saturday I’m teaching then doing a thing at parliament. I can work anywhere – I’ll get on a train and that’s my office.

Ruby Wax photographed by Steve Ullathorne

PH: What do you do to relax? RW: Kayak. Sleep a lot. Travel to Cape Town.

21 NH_June17_Ruby_Wax.indd 21

PH: What are you doing next? RW: I hate that question. I mean, isn’t this enough? I’ll probably do a tour for the book. I’ll need the monk and the neuroscientist though – I’ve got the monk, he’s moved in with us actually. I call him my airfreshener. He’s hilarious. But he’s very in demand (his mother was in the Kumars) and he’s kind of a movie star monk. The neuroscientist is a teacher at Yale – he’s really good looking. ◆ Frazzled, a show based on Ruby Wax’s book A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled (Penguin, £6.99) is at the Leicester Square Theatre from 30 May to 24 June. rubywax.net

MAKE AN IMPACT We talk inspiration, art and politics with Enzina Fuschini ahead of her new exhibition at 508 Art Gallery

I am not a feminist, but I can defend women’s rights. It can be very difficult dealing with men in general but we need them. I believe that conflict and confusion happen when the roles are interchanging.

What was your main source of inspiration for Impact? The inspiration for IMPACT was born from the desire to understand and to express the turmoil of the various impacts we face day by day. This is a reality that cannot be denied. We have no choice other than just to embrace these events and the changes that occur, whether we like it or not. I wanted to stimulate our thinking about the continuous changes that take place around us when we are faced with these impacts. When it comes to bespoke commissions, how do you maintain a balance between what the client wants and your own vision? I love to work on bespoke projects. It involves understanding what my clients need and their individual home décor style. Usually we work together in this. The vision comes from the client and I will come up with ideas that suit each client’s expectation. I can only advise and inspire to the best of my abilities. So far I have had excellent results. How influenced are you by politics and human conditions? We are living in a world that collides with various forces outside of our control. The political situation of our days - in fact reflects everything that has happened in the past. We need to read history and understand the facts before we can give our opinion and be worried by it. We also need to trust that no one is perfect, we... the world makes mistakes and every body is trying hard to bond in togetherness for a better future. I am not for war, but for forgiveness and peace. I personally care for the world’s affairs, however I have learned to keep going whatever happens. Yes I can feel worried; but I stay positive in encouraging and believing in others.

YES I CAN FEEL worried; BUT I STAY POSITIVE

in encouraging and

BELIEVING IN OTHERS

And how has this influenced the paintings for IMPACT? Impact is a result of this turmoil in which we are all affected by and involved in. However we must stay focused and bring to humanity the best of our self. Does feminism come into your work at all? And if so how?

23 NH_June17_Enzina Fuschini InterviewNEW.indd 23

As an independent women, what kind of struggles have you encountered in getting to where you are now? And how have they influenced your work? Professionally, I have found it difficult and very painful to reach where I am now. I have felt that because I am a woman artist, things were not as easy as they would have been if I were a man. However, this has never put me off or stopped me believing in my principles. I have learned to stay patient, to humble myself and remain positive for opportunity. We all need to learn how to love the unlovable. My Christian faith has helped enormously and still does so. ◆

lywood is underrated. Despite its versatility, strength and affordability, it’s often overlooked. It can be seen as cheap or unstable but in fact plywood has been used in the construction of everything from WWII aircraft to surfboards, and was an obvious choice of material for the moulding techniques developed in the 1930s as well as for new digital manufacture. The V&A’s new exhibition Plywood: Material of the Modern World seeks to show how this seemingly nondescript material has helped create the modern world. Exhibition curator Christopher Wilk says: “Plywood is such a common, everyday material that most people barely notice when it is used. One could say that it has been hidden in plain sight. Since Victorian times, it has been one of the most popular and versatile materials used in manufacturing, and by designers and architects. Today it is more popular than ever.” Plywood explores the near-ubiquitous material’s global impact and history from the 1850s to the present day. The exhibition brings together significant new research with new acquisitions and objects that have never before been on public display. It will take visitors through plywood’s many reputational transformations; from a cheap product that was often hidden or maligned for its inferiority to solid timber, to the material prized by midcentury modernists and by today’s flourishing maker movement. Fragments of layered board have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs, but it was the advent of mass production in the nineteenth century that saw plywood’s adaptability and potential fully exploited. Used to construct everything from a tube to house an experimental elevated railway in 1867 New York to hatboxes, tea chests, surfboards and skateboards, plywood has been embraced by designers, architects and engineers; each successive generation finding ever-more innovative ways to shape, mould, cut and fix it.

Plywood is such a

COMMON, EVERYDAY MATERIAL that most people HARDLY NOTICE WHEN IT IS USED

Coupling objects drawn from the V&A’s world class furniture, design and architecture collections with significant loans from across the globe, highlights include early experiments in plywood, such as a 1908 book printed during Ernest Shackleton’s Nimrod expedition to Antarctica and bound with plywood covers; celebrated pieces by modernist designers such as Alvar Aalto, Marcel Breuer, Grete Jalk, Robin Day and Charles and Ray Eames; and striking examples of transport design such as 1917 moulded canoe, a 1960s British racing car

with plywood chassis, and some of the first ever surf- and skateboards. Interspersed throughout the displays are three important milestones in the evolution of plywood manufacture: the invention of the rotary veneer cutter in the early 19th century; the advent of moulding techniques that inspired the groundbreaking forms of 1930s modernism; and plywood’s recent dominance as a material for CNC-cutting and digital manufacture. Ruth Wassermann, head of design at exhibition sponsor made.com said: “Plywood as a material has hidden depths. Created to have more strength and reliability than solid wood, its development as a mouldable material has changed furniture design immeasurably through the 20th century, and with current moods around provenance and honesty of material, has now come into its own for its decorative properties. Plywood is integral to the soft wooden curves of Nordic design." ◆ P LY WO O D 15 July - 12 November 2017, Porter Gallery. Admission is free

It’s a sentiment that is reflected in the brand’s off-beat feminine designs, which count Alexa Chung as a fan. Gaining experience at a number of high profile fashion houses including Marni, Lanvin, Marc Jacobs and Chloe - Sama went on to launch her first collection for SS13. Watch this space.

own a quiet road lined with highend home stores and restaurants, Spa Illuminata sits behind a traditional, pharmacy-like facade. An unassuming pair of double doors at the back of the small boutique leads into the spa, which is a labyrinthine space kitted out with decadent, Roman villa-like decor. It is surprisingly spacious, complete with steam, treatment and relaxation room and ‘temple of relaxation’. After lounging in the relaxation area I am ushered into the sweet-smelling treatment room for a signature facial and beauty light therapy facial - a combined treatment that promises to instantly lift, firm and repair the skin. Firstly, my skin is cleansed and a glucolic tonic applied. The next step is microdermabrasion, a method of deep exfoliation that refines the skin using special medical grade polished crystals. This was followed by a high tech trio of radio frequency, electromesotherapy (yes, that’s a thing) and LED light therapy paired with a collagen mask. All non-invasive and non-painful. The final section constituted a relaxing facial massage to boost blood flow and increase radiance. In all, it's the perfect escapism in the centre of bustling London. ◆ 63 South Audley Street, W1K 2QS spailluminata.com

IS THERE PALM OIL LURKING IN MY HAIRCARE?

Taylor. ‘So, my trick is to blot hair with a microfiber towel, brush and tousle hair when damp, and for extra lift, simply tip your head upside-down and rub roots only – avoiding frizz-prone mid-lengths.’

If you are fighting frizz as vehemently as you are fighting the world’s wildlife issues, it could pay to look for alternatives to palm oil in your smoothing products. Flip over a bottle of conditioner and beauty’s environmental enemy number one, palm oil (the insatiable demand for which is having a devastating impact on orangutans, tigers, elephants in South East Asia) could be lurking. And be warned: palm oil is labelled in many guises: SLS, glycerin, etyl palmitate and palmate for example. L’Oreal for one has

2015 BERRY BROS. & RUDD Australian Shiraz by Elderton Barossa Shiraz is all about texture: smooth, chocolaterich liquid that glides across the palate. This is a prime example of the style but incorporates an added lift of crunchy red fruit, bringing a welcome freshness to this very drinkable wine.

2016 FLYSCH TXAKOLINA Bodega Gorosti, Getariako Txakolina, Spain Flysch takes its name from a sedimentary rock formation found along the coast just from Bodega Gorosti, a small (4.5 hectares), family-owned winery. It is made from 100 percent Hondarribi Zuri, grown on pergola-trained vines.

2015 CH. GOUBAU Bordeaux, France (12.5%) A blend of 80 percent Merlot, 20 percent Cabernet Franc from the appellation of Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux. The château’s rosé wine is certified organic and has real personality: bone dry and savoury, with ample structure to stand up to whatever’s on the barbecue this summer.

urgers don’t get any better – or more serious – than at Patty & Bun. This isn't the nostalgic type of burger place, not the ironic kind. Decorwise, the new outpost on Pembridge Road is about as far from the shiny 1950s diner as you can get. This is a dimly lit urban space, all exposed brick walls, neon lights and bare industrial minimalism. There are a few booths at the front and a large long table for sharing at the back, where we sit. Burgers, shakes and cocktails are on offer, and each P&B outpost (there are nine in London) has a different menu. Our burgers arrive wrapped in paper, entirely liberated of crockery and cutlery. 'Filthy' screams a neon sign. 'Pink 'n Julcy' announces another one. These burgers are not for the squeamish – my Jose Jose chilli burger is oozing with chilli Sobrassada relish, smoky mayo and pickled onions, while the Smoky Robinson burger boasts 'mounds of caramelised onions' and bacon as well as the famed patty that lives up to its pink 'n juicy promise. The award for most truly decadent dish goes to chips with roast chicken mayo and chicken skin salt, a sort of extreme Chips Plus, rivalled only in extremity by a dessert of an outsize donut with vanilla ice cream. Don't expect to improve your cholesterol levels here, but everything from the P&B kitchen is a definite crowd-pleaser. 

Bibendum

Bibendum is back with a bang, thanks to Claude Bosi Wo r d s H a n n a h H o p k i n s

aving held two Michelin stars at his restaurant Hibiscus, which he closed in 2016, Claude Bosi has taken the helm at Bibendum and he's a man fit for the tricky task of attracting new foodies while keeping the restaurant’s long-standing customers happy. On our visit we’re in good company. Scottish chef Tom Kitchin and Masterchef regular Monica Galetti are both in attendance, sampling the new dishes. The upstairs dining room is striking with dramatic, floor-to-ceiling stained glass windows of the Michelin Man, Conran chairs in muted blues and a buzzing open kitchen. We start snapping photos immediately. The menu is, in Bosi’s words, ‘unashamedly fine dining’ but it has lighthearted flair. We’re treated to a veritable feast of amuse bouches, from crispy chicken skin with mustard mayo dip to teeny tiny

foie gras ice creams and doughy cheese balls. There are so many culinary delights to sample we momentarily forget we haven’t even cracked on to the starters. When they do arrive we have Cornish crab with elderflower jelly and vegetable dumpling with prawn consommé. Both are light and fragrant, ideal ahead of heavier mains of Peranakan black leg chicken breast with Ayam Sioh sauce and Cornish turbot with Grenobloise sauce. Dessert is the real spectacle, though. We love wild strawberry vacherin with balsamic glaze and sweet olive oil millefeuille with vanilla and mango ripple. We also recommend chocolate soufflé, topped with an inevitable imprint of the Michelin Man, and served with basil ice cream. With its stellar service, exceptional wine list and a praised French chef at the helm, it’s a welcome rebirth for this SW3 staple.  C L AU D E B O S I AT B I B E N D U M Michelin House, 81 Fulham Road, SW3; 020 7581 5817, bibendum.co.uk

Supper Club

SUPERSTARS Laura Jackson and Alice Levine’s cookbook offers advice and recipes from their supper club. Absolutely steals their secrets... Interview Hannah Hopkins

HANNAH HOPKINS: How did you meet and start your supper clubs? JACKSON & LEVINE: We met at a jumble sale that our friend Gemma Cairney was running for Oxfam, she asked us each to run a stall. We kept finding things we thought the other would like - there were some dungarees and a cat blouse if memory serves us right. We started chatting about food on our break and decided to meet up and have lunch. We then cooked up the idea of starting a supper club. HH: What’s the ethos behind your cookbook Round to Ours? J&L: We have been running supper clubs together for four years. Along the way we have learnt loads of great little cheats for cooking for big numbers, and setting the mood when people come over - so we thought we would get them all down in one place. It’s part cookbook, part interiors book, part directory for great finds. We want people to turn to it in times of entertaining need!

HH: How did you decide which recipes would go in the book? J&L: We wanted the book to inspire people to get their friends over - so that meant everything had to be impressive but easy to put together. The book is full of menus that we have cooked for loved ones, that have gone down well. Great all-rounders, that can become part of your repertoire. HH: What’s your favourite aspect of having people over for dinner? J&L: We love having a busy, bustling kitchen table, with all our favourite people around it, the more the merrier. The best dinners start early and end late - everyone staying well into the night is a good sign. Being at the heart of the action as the person making the food has always been a thrill for us both. HH: Which are some of your favourite go-to dishes for groups? J&L: A piece of slow-cooked meat is always an amazing crowd pleaser - think

lamb shoulder done low and slow. Serve with some dauphinoise which tastes even better if you prepare in the night before. Then just do some simple seasonal greens with lemon and black pepper. HH: Your supper clubs look so beautiful. What are your tips for throwing the perfect dinner party? J&L: If you are going to the trouble of cooking a lovely meal for friends, it’s worth putting that final bit of effort in to present it in a beautiful way. We are all about the small details - some lovely

plants or flowers for the table (we get inspiration on Instagram from our florist friends @wormlondon). Pick up some large sharing platters and plates in the charity shop so you can serve some dishes banquet-style in the middle of the table and take time to think about the lighting - it makes such a difference.

FOOD & DRINK / Q & A HH: There’s a real new tribe of young, stylish female foodies out there right now. How do you stand out from the crowd? J&L: We are friends with loads of the female foodies. We saw Anna Jones today and Rosie Birkett is a great pal who we always call up for great ideas and dog walks on the Marshes. We all get together for lunches and dinners. Elly Pear comes over to visit from Bristol, Clare Lattin from Duck Soup and Claire Ptak from Violet’s bring a dish too. We also host the Young British Foodie Awards because Lily Vanilli is a friend of ours. So for us it’s not about standing out from the crowd it’s trying to be an even bigger part of it.

- it’s a very simple recipe; gin, prosecco, elderflower cordial and a slice of cucumber or grapefruit. It’s definitely an ice breaker. HH: What would be on your playlist? J&L: We always play tracks on the record player and encourage guests to pick up a classic in the charity shop that they can put on. Northern Soul seem to go down well so we raid Jon [Laura’s boyfriend’s] collection. HH: How does your dynamic together work in the kitchen? J&L: Laura is a Tasmanian devil - so much energy and a mean list maker. Alice likes the washing up! So in many ways a perfect combination.

For US it's not about STANDING OUT from the CROWD, it's being a BIGGER PART of it

HH: As broadcasters you’re both used to interviewing celebrities – who is the best person you’ve interviewed? LAURA JACKSON: Snoop Dog, he wouldn’t stop talking about the Queen. ALICE LEVINE: I played Hungry Hippos with Quentin Tarantino, he’d never heard of it so took it home with him. HH: What do you do to unwind? J&L: Cook! Seriously we find a leisurely stint in the kitchen with the radio on to be a lovely way to de-stress. Either that or watching rubbish TV. HH: Finally, where are your favourite places to eat in London? LJ: Morito - the Exmouth Market tapas bar and restaurant has always been a favourite, as is Rochelle Canteen - hidden in a garden, behind the wall of a Victorian school. AL: Duck Soup is ideal for a chilled, midweek dinner. Padella - we have always loved Tim’s restaurant Trullo, so when they opened this little sister pasta joint, we were over the moon. Try the pici, it’s phenomenal. And also Campania & Jones. We have both lived in the East End for many years, and we still love a trip to Columbia Road. Summer nights on that patch of cobbles is divine. ◆

ECCENTRICS The interior for Albert’s Club in South Kensington combines quirky art with traditional looks. Absolutely has a tour Wo r d s E v e H e r b e r t

A

lbert’s Club, Kensington and Chelsea’s first private members' club of its kind, has a new look. Designed and executed by interior design extraordinaire Jesse Burgess, from House 91, in just nine weeks, it features eccentric art reflective of Albert’s energetic atmosphere, bold prints lining the walls courtesy of Colefax & Fowler and subtle nods to the Kensington royal quarters. The site of Albert’s has taken on a variety of forms in the past, yet no one has previously achieved décor to rival the old-world glamour that Albert’s Club recreates. The club’s Old Brompton Road location, known as Albertropolis, was the stomping ground of Prince Albert at the height of Victoria’s reign and the interiors echo the splendour of the Kensington Hotel and the V&A museum. Alongside nods to more traditional styles, including blue velvet and mahogany wood in the dining room and a Balmoral tartan-lined staircase, Burgess has incorporated a contemporary touch with LED lights set into the club ceiling and unusual golden giraffe and antelope fabrics. this, the curation of an impressive art collection compliments the interiors, contributing of traditional pieces by Picasso, to vibrant prints by Norman Parkinson (grandfather of club owner Jake Parkinson-Smith) and street art by Mr Brainwash, Black Le Rat and HiJack. Character and charm are in abundance as Colefax & Fowler line the walls with their distinctive print, acting as the perfect backdrop for the new social media craze #albertsbathroomselfie. The Whisky Bar and entrance walkway presented themselves to Burgess as a perfect opportunity to again tap into Colefax & Fowler’s offering; a seamless complement to the tartan print stairwell guiding guests to the Blue Room. Tile counsel Designer Laura Marino on beautiful bathrooms from Devon&Devon Wo r d s E v e H e r b e r t

L

einster Square is a Grade II listed architectural gem in which numbers 7-12 have been completely renovated by Alchemi Group and their design arm, Studio L. Together with architects TateHindle, Alchemi/Studio L have sympathetically restored these quintessential Notting Hill terraces to create a collection of apartments and townhouses finished to the highest standards. As part of the premium specifications, the design team at Studio L, led by Laura Marino, chose a series of Devon&Devon pieces to ensure the beauty and quality

of the bathroom furnishings. A familyowned company that is ‘Created in Florence, Inspired by the World’ Devon&Devon draws inspiration from a rich variety of classic pieces, reinterpreting their timeless elegance for contemporary living. To set the tone and remain in keeping with the architecture, designs include impressive freestanding tubs and statement vanity units and consoles. The design concept is a modern take on the Victorian era, inspired by the original buildings and the lively neighbourhood. Marino explains: “Before I began, I had an instinct on how I wanted it to look and feel because I live in the area and am very attached to it. I felt there was no need to

69 NH_June17_DEVON&DEVON.indd 69

play it too safe or bland in the heart of such a creative and vibrant neighborhood, especially as the Victorians themselves were keen on the kind of character, flavour and colour we wanted to bring.” She continues: “I wanted a look that was timelessly classic. Something that wouldn’t date. Also, I like to be a bit more daring with bathrooms – they’re like little jewel boxes and should be allowed to have personality in their own right without being garish.” Accordingly, the luxurious en-suite master bathrooms feature signature creations such as the Admiral bath and the Regent double vanity, or the Regal bath and Season vanity, while further bathrooms have typically original pieces such as the Wide Blues console, or a touch of Art Deco style in the form of the Jet Set vanity and best-selling Celine bath. While tiles in certain shower rooms include selections from the Devon&Devon Soho and Simply ranges. Laura concludes: “I’m over the moon about how the project, but especially how the bathrooms turned out. We have created a bespoke product on a mass scale and we feel the Devon&Devon products suit the development perfectly. So much so we have continued using them for our neighbouring development in number 13-19 Leinster Square.” ◆

HOMES & INTERIORS / STORAGE

ABSOLUTELY: What are the advantages of having a dressing room? McCARRON & CO: One of the main advantages of having a dressing room is the space that it provides, allowing you to have your clothes, shoes and accessories in a dedicated area rather than trying to contain all of these within a bedroom. This also means that by having a specific room for these items the bedroom can remain decluttered and become a more calming space. Having a dedicated dressing room generally affords you a greater amount of storage so that every item has its place allowing the client to be more organised. Also, as the room’s sole purpose is that of being a dressing room you can tailor the room specifically for the individual or couple using it. Certainly having a dressing room can provide a sense of luxury, and for us as designers it can provide us with the opportunity to be very creative with the layout and tailor it personally to the client’s needs. ABS: Is it a good idea to share one or should you have one to yourself? McC&C: This really comes down to a question of space. In an ideal world, most clients want to have their own but this isn’t always possible. If the clients are able to have one each then we can tailor it to meet their individual needs. This can then lead to these rooms being the most personal spaces in the home, tailoring the furniture and finishes to the individual. We can keep similar themes across both dressing rooms but having your own one does allow for more self-expression which you may not have in the more sociable, open rooms in the home. Individuals will also differ in terms of how

they like their clothing and accessories to be displayed which can ultimately lead to very different designs between the two dressing rooms. The beauty of having two dressing rooms is that each layout can be designed without compromise. ABS: How should we go about arranging clothes? McC&C: Every client is different, and we would ask a fair few questions to ascertain how they would like to store their clothes and accessories, how they would like to use the space, which items they need regular access to and which items will potentially be stored. Further questions may relate to aspects such as do they need lots of hanging, would they prefer more shelving, what height do they want their hanging rails to be, do they want fixed shelves for shoes or have them hidden away? Some clients prefer to have their clothes arranged by colour, others by style or purpose, so once we understand this, we can help with the solution that meets their requirements

Some people LIKE TO

HAVE THEIR CLOTHES ARRANGED by colour; others ACCORDING TO STYLE OR PURPOSE

ABS: How can you create the maximum storage out of a limited space? McC&C: Working with a bespoke furniture company means that you can utilise every available millimetre. It is very important to consider the depth of the wardrobes as consideration needs to be made for wider garments such as jackets and suits that require more internal space so that doors shut without touching the clothing. Recently we transformed a partition wall into a stunning floor-to-ceiling wardrobe which included a secret door through to the en-suite. This provided the maximum storage space available in a very stylish manner. Clever lighting and the use of mirrors should be considered very carefully in these spaces to maximise the space and light. ◆ mccarronandco.com

73 NH_June17_Maccarron.indd 73

ABS: Can you design a wardrobe for someone with lots of clothes but no idea how to store them properly? McC&C: Yes! Firstly we need to have an understanding of the range of clothes and accessories that they want to be storing. The key element is to allow a versatility with the storage such as adjustable shelving, so that they can rearrange it if necessary, creating different apertures, moving hanging rails and so on. Clients are requesting more glass-fronted drawers, but that may come down to how tidy and organised you are, which is also relevant when it comes to deciding whether to have doors on the wardrobes themselves or to keep them open.

ith its timeless familiarity, inspiring grandeur and instantly recognisable architecture, Paris has always been a destination favourite. Its illustrious artistic pedigree - Picasso, Monet, Manet and Van Gogh are but just a few of the city’s past resident masters – means it’s home to an endless treasure trove of cultural gems for visitors. But hot on Paris’ learned heels is Zurich. It is one of the leading art trading cities in the world with more than 50 museums and over 100 galleries. Around every corner in each city, you’ll discover something unmissable; an ancient church, an exhibition of modern art, a quirky museum or a perfectly dingy jazz bar. There are some sights that every visitor must see, and with just a four-hour train ride linking the two, it’s easy to tick them off in a week-long excursion to these two cultural capitals of Europe.

Zurich Stay  The Kameha Grand Zurich draws many an art-lover with its unique architecture and exceptionally designed interiors. Nestled in the beautiful recreation area of the Glattpark, the hotel is surrounded by forests, meadows and ponds. It’s within a 30 minute tram-ride of Zurich’s many cultural offerings. A stay here in itself affords much; ping pong tables, beach volleyball courts, basketball

and football facilities, grill areas and a bike park invite you to stay and play. Pop your bags down, marvel at your stylish room and the bathroom’s rain shower, then hop on the tram just 5 minutes from the hotel into Zurich’s centre.

See Zurich  The guardian angel in Zurich’s central station is check-point one in a trip to the city’s centre. Designed by the FrenchSwiss painter and sculptor Niki de St. Phalle as a gift on the station’s 150th anniversary, the angel has been hovering over passers-by since 1997. From here, the next stop is the National Museum. Located mere minutes from the station, it houses the largest collection of culturalhistorical objects in the country. The building itself is over 100 years old and resembles a fairytale castle. History comes alive behind its walls with a vast collection of material heritage from Switzerland’s past generations. And from there, history-buffs will want to continue with a tour of Zurich’s Old Town. This guided walk sets off from the station and weaves it’s way around Medieval houses,

contorted, narrow lanes and town halls from the Renaissance period. Niederdorf is part of Zurich's old town – fondly referred to by locals as "Dörfli". During the day, this pedestrian zone attracts visitors for its interesting sights, culinary delights and shopping. In the evening, Niederdorf changes into a nightlife district. Here you will experience a wealth of bars and street artists. Zurich’s Haus Konstruktiv is one of Europe’s leading modern art museums. An absolute must for culture lovers, the museum provides a space for concrete art. The space is dedicated to the exploration of constructive and conceptual art and focuses on

international trends in contemporary art. Filling five floors of the former Selnau electricity sub-station, works explore art in the context of their historical background. Also on permanent display are treasures from the museum's own collection.

See Paris  Of course, when it comes to art, there is no collection large enough to rival that of Paris’ Louvre. Home to hundreds of thousands of classic and modern masterpieces, the Louvre is the icing on the cake of French culture. Stationed at the eastern end of the Tuileries Gardens, strolling to the Louvre grants a pass-by one of Napoleon’s arches and the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel. A 15 minute subway ride from here will take you to the one of Paris’ newest cultural offerings, Le Grand Musée du Parfum. This immersive perfume museum is set inside a 19th-century mansion and is the first scent-centric attraction of its kind in the world. Journey through the history and science of scent and perfumery, via a host of hi-tech

graphic, video and sound installations. Your olfactory journey begins in antiquity, before travelling via some rather objectionable medieval odours to the Industrial Revolution. The tours ends with the rosier notes of the 20th century. A space devoted unashamedly to sensory pleasure could only occur in France. In keeping with things decidedly French, a trip to Ecole Lesage promises glimpses into the worlds of France’s most highly esteemed fashion favourites. Lesage has been creating opulent embroidery for Haute Couture and Ready-to-Wear since 1924 and became part of Chanel’s Métiers d’art in 2002. Here you will find the creations that highlighted the most beautiful fashion shows of Yves Saint-Laurent and Christian Lacroix, to name a few.

 A visit to this esteemed school can be organised from the Mandarin Oriental, situated on rue Saint-Honoré and just steps from the Louvre. This impressive venue is our stay de choix in Paris. The elegant hotel enjoys a wonderfully chic location. The hotel’s interiors match Paris’ thriving art scene and the dining - from acclaimed chef Thierry Marx - is some of the best in the city. Combining art deco details and Asian influences, Mandarin Oriental is a haven of elegance and understated luxury. The journey from Gard du Nord to the hotel is either 30 minutes on foot or half that traffic depending - in a taxi. Before leaving this iconic station, a meal at Thierry Marx’s l’Etoile du Nord is a must. Patrick Le Grand Musée du Parfum, Paris Bouchain, pioneer in the conversion of industrial places into cultural centres, has turned l’Etoile du Nord into an architectural sight to behold. It has a roof that glimmers and an intimate space that allows visitors to watch life Parisian life pass by. ◆

TRAVEL / UK GETAWAY THE LOCATION

S

outh Devon is aptly known as the English Riviera for its lush, craggy coastline, beautiful beaches and picturesque views. If only you could guarantee the weather, people say, they’d never bother crossing the channel. The Cary Arms occupies one of the most beautiful spots, directly on the seafront with instant access to the beach. Access is via a steep and windy road, unless you come by boat, in which case they’ll arrange a mooring for you. Perched on a rock, the hotel offers sea views from almost every window, and the whole setup is like something out of The Famous Five – a combination of the wild and the domestic, with a large dose of nostalgia and Britishness, and a colourful, smuggler-filled history.

here are standard hotel rooms, suites and beach huts as well as a four bedroom cottage. This is where we stay: it’s spacious as well as cute and full of neat touches. Children are welcomed with crabbing nets and buckets; beds are comfortable and everything we could need is provided. Owner Lana de Savaray is known for her stylish interiors and she is the driving force behind this characterful boutique establishment.

WHAT TO DO

T

he calming and stylish Cary Spa is worth a visit, and the hotel’s lounge is well-equipped with books, board games and a pool table. But you’ll want to be outside, so take one of the recommended walks and explore the area. At nearby Oddicombe beach there’s a famed funicular railway that takes you up and into town as an experience in itself. Crabbing spots abound and you’ll probably spot Sammy the resident seal in the water just outside the hotel.

The buildings face on to Jubilee Gardens, offering unrivalled views of the River Thames and a host of landmarks, including the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye. The buildings will provide 97 apartments, of one to three-bedrooms, as well as an extensive residents’ amenities

floor and roof terrace. The design-led apartments vary in price and size, with onebedroom apartments starting at £1,050,000. During the planning and execution of the project, GRID Architects’ designs were greatly influenced by the Festival of Britain, a national exhibition held in 1951. In the wake of World War II, the exhibition symbolised a strong spirit of recovery and rejuvenation. The bronze Festival Star is subtly replicated throughout Belvedere Gardens, masterfully etched onto the façade.

Greene & Co. won Gold in the London West category for Best Estate Agents, while John D Wood & Co. won Silver awards in Chelsea and South Kensington.

The Tower, which is the latest building at Chelsea Creek, has outstanding panoramic skyline views. Thre- bedroom apartments here are letting well with average rents of £1,500-2,000 per week and smaller apartments are in demand, too.

What are your market predictions for the coming months? There is good demand by the river, but landlords have to be realistic on rents as tenants are looking for value and have lots of choice. Presentation is key. BENHAM & REEVES RESIDENTIAL LETTINGS

Blue Forest Create Tree House at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017

lue Forest will be exhibiting a luxury, handcrafted tree house at the RHS Chelsea Flower 2017. The tree house is made from Kebony, a wood recommended by leading architects, and will offer the public a rare opportunity to experience the quality of Blue Forest’s bespoke tree house creations. Located on the show’s Main Avenue, the stand will feature a natural woodland planting scheme designed by Architectural Plants, a nursery with an enthusiasm for the sculptural qualities of trees and quirky or unusual plants. Finished with premium grade cedar cladding and featuring a copper turret, the Blue Forest tree house is designed primarily as a garden hideaway. Those with an eye for detail will spot numerous other bespoke touches including copper finials, intricate rope work and a bespoke interior design scheme. The woodland planting is set against sustainable Kebony timber decking and lining of the bench and walls, which was chosen for its beauty, environmental credentials and hardwearing characteristics. Kebony’s revolutionary technology is an environmentallyfriendly process which modifies sustainably sourced softwoods by heating the wood with furfuryl alcohol - an agricultural byproduct. This year's tree house will be the largest the group has exhibited at the Chelsea Flower Show. Two tree stilt walkers will be circulating the grounds, directing guests to visit the luxury treehouse.

ho will fill Len Goodman’s highly polished shoes now that the veteran Strictly Come Dancing judge has bowed out? Self-styled ‘Mr Nasty’ Craig Revel Horwood is one candidate. The fierce Aussie judge has been on the show’s panel since it launched and enjoys regular booing from studio audiences, while his “Fab-u-lous” scores are the most highly prized.

He told The Sun recently that Cameron Mackintosh lent him £40,000 in 1997 to buy his house in Camden for £149,000 after he fell in love with the property. Horwood paid the theatre producer back by renting out one of the rooms. He has just accepted an offer on the Grade-II listed two-bedroom terraced house which had been on the market for £1.2m. It has a reception/dining room and large kitchen and a garden, where he’s named a fountain after friend and former Strictly contestant Kelly Brook. Through agent Hot Black (0207 482 2894).

CHURCHILL’S FIRST FLAT

A

n apartment that was home to Winston Churchill during his initial and highly successful years in government is available to rent in central London for just under £20,000 a month. The property at 33 Eccleston Square in Pimlico near Victoria train station was lived in for four years from 1909 by the then business minister Winston Churchill and his wife Clementine. Their first two children Diana and Randolph were born at the flat. And while Churchill and his family lived here his career took off, including the post of First Lord of the Admiralty. It also believed that many of the government policies attributed to Churchill during his first stint in government were drafted at the property. It has four bedrooms, 4,000 sq ft of space, three reception rooms, a roof terrace, several bathrooms and a steam spa and is available through Savills (0203 430 6872).

hen he died in 2011 heavyweight boxer Henry Cooper was remembered mainly for knocking down Muhammad Ali during a 1966 non-title fight. But his own first KO came not during a fight, but at his childhood home in SE London when he ran into the gas cooker. Born into a workingclass family he grew up during the tough years of WWII in Catford. In 2007 he returned to 120 Farmstead Road with a film crew and described the area as a “tight community”. nyone with a literary bent and a love of steam railways will remember the Royal Mail’s GPO Film Unit, which made documentaries about the postal service during the 1950s and 1960s. Its most famous film was Night Mail about the workers who used to sort mail on board the night trains that, until 2014, made their way from London to Aberdeen. Night Mail was edited at the GPO Film Unit’s headquarters in Blackheath, South London, within a development of commercial units where the unit operated from 1934 to 1943. Most of the properties there have been converted to residential use, including No.43 where the GPO film makers worked. It’s a two-bedroom apartment for sale at £850,000 via agent John Payne (020 8318 1311).

Hampste ad Manor by N I G E L L E W I S

Hampstead’s hall on the hill is reborn, offering new luxurious homes with rich links to the past

T

he UK’s once gilded country manors and suburban mansions, funded by the riches of empire and trade from the 17th century onwards, have had a rough old time of it since the nation’s economic fortunes began to wane after the First World War. It’s a story told eloquently in TV’s Downton Abbey. But a much more extreme version of the ‘adapt or die’ approach to survival is to

be found in the Childs Hill area of Hampstead. Perched 250-feet above sea level from where it peers out over North London, Kidderpore Hall has endured a multitude of uses since it was completed in 1843 for leather magnate John Teil. He made his fortune in the fetid tanneries of Kidderpore on the outskirts of Calcutta in Bengal, and poured much of his wealth into building a Greek revival mansion here featuring elegant colonnades, side pediments and a grand semicircular bay.

“Kidderpore Hall has endured a multitude of uses since it was completed in 1843 for leather magnate John Teil” At the time, the area was largely rural and as well as a house, Teil enclosed local land to create a private park to surround his home and even kept ‘groomed’ sheep on his front lawn, somewhat Marie Antoinette-like. But as the years passed the area slowly became more suburban with new houses, lodges and roads added. In 1857 Teil died and the property, which from 1870 to 1878 was owned by dye merchant Charles Cannon, began to deteriorate. But then a new calling beckoned; to be the home for an educational world-first.

PROPERTY / DEVELOPMENT “Hampstead Manor as the developer has re-christened it, remains riddled with architectural clues to its past”

The hall and its land was bought and converted into a pioneering college for women to study botany, which at the time was one of few scientific disciplines women could enter. Westfield College had a wellconnected and wealthy set of supporters to get it going including the then monarch’s wife, Queen Mary, but also several progressive and wealthy women including Ann Dudin Brown, Constance Maynard and Mary Petrie. When it opened in 1882, it was one of the only higher education institutions for women in

England, and one of the first where they could gain degrees. The college went co-ed in 1964 and carried on until 1989 when it became an outpost of Kings College, later being turned into halls of residence. Its latest reincarnation is now well under way. The site was bought by developer Mount Anvil in 2014 and is being redeveloped into private homes. Kidderpore Hall, or Hampstead Manor as the developer has re-christened it, remains riddled with architectural clues to its past. Despite the army of builders

109 Chis_June17_HAMPSTEAD MANOR.indd 109

clomping their way all over of the site and the sound of hammer drills and pile drivers, the grandeur of Kidderpore Hall is still there to seen. Double-height ceilings, 8ft-tall doorways, and a swirling hard-wood hand-railed staircase that rises up to a glass roof light – which Mount Anvil is refurbishing – hint at the huge wealth that Teil amassed, even if many of the hall’s walls now have gaping holes in them. If there is an interested buyer, Mount Anvil would consider selling the Grade II listed Kidderpore Hall, one of the few remaining Georgian manors left in London, as one exceptional home. Otherwise, it will be transformed into two duplex apartments. But the educational additions to the site – which include an extraordinary galleried library for the female students, a number of Grade II buildings added at different times during the college’s history – are all to be turned into 125 luxury flats and townhouses, while the old chapel is to become a fourbedroom home, overall there are five Grade II listed buildings within the development. Two new modern buildings are also being constructed on the site, plus seven townhouses as well as an underground car park, and landscaped gardens. Let’s hope the millions being poured into the site’s refurbishment and conversion secure its future for another 174 years. ◆

Prices at Hampstead Manor start at £755,000 for a one-bedroom apartment and rise to £3.5 million for the townhouses. More information visit mountanvil.com or call 020 7776 5730

Londoners own their home with a mortgage – less than you might expect. 5

R o om s to m ov e

The number of people living in a home within London has increased from two in 1931 to 3.5 at the last Census in 2011. It is projected to increase to 3.7 by 2021 and 4.2 by 2031. There are currently 3.3 million homes in London, up from 2.5 million in 1981. 4

R enta l r evo lut i o n

The number of people renting privately in London overtook those living in social rented homes in late 2010, the same year the number of privately owned homes dipped under 50% of all households. A quarter of all

S ub ur ba n dr e a m

The top pick of Justin Marking, head of residential at Savills, for 2017 is the suburban restoration project, which he says is where you can “add value and take advantage of the differentiation between London and the country, which still exists”. 7

f there’s one thing about the London property market that is a constant, it’s the superlatives that most of use to describe it. Extraordinary, outrageous, most expensive, smallest, fastestrising, largest, most famous, highest priced. I could go on. The capital has achieved them all – and that’s just over the past year. Here’s our guide to some surprising and of course amazing facts about the city’s property market.

P r i c e to pay

All prime property in London is currently dropping in value, research by Savills has revealed this month. Its report on the market shows that prime central homes have reduced by 6.9% compared to a year ago, while prime NW London is down 3.2% and prime SW 4.4%. The area with the smallest reductions year on year is prime West London.

R e n ts i n r ev e rs e

The prime rental market in London has been sliding for a while now particularly in the £1,000 to £1,500 a week market where rents have fallen by 7.6% year on year, according to Knight Frank. 8

P os h pa d

The priciest property on the market at the moment is a five-bedroom apartment for sale within One Hyde Park, the Candy & Candy confection just over from Harrods. It has five bathrooms, three reception rooms and a huge set of picture-windows offering views over Hyde Park. Got the cash? Call Knight Frank on 020 7591 8600.

Londoners move 4.6 miles on average, well under the national average of 6.6 miles and the shortest distance moved in the UK. Removals website Buzzmove.com crunched the numbers from among 51,000 house moves it’s organised since 2013. Home movers in the East of England move the furthers at 12 miles, followed by Wales and the South of England. “This data shows that the myth that people don’t travel far when they move is just that – a myth,” said Damien Seaman, Head of Brand at buzzmove.com. “People move for a wide variety of reasons, but this data shows that people are clearly willing to relocate quite far away according to their circumstances.” 2

London’s a cr ow d

If you think London is too crowded then remember that the city only recently surpassed its 1939, pre-war total of 8.62 million. Older residents will remember when, during the decades after the war, much of central and inner central London was a ghost town in the evenings and weekends and only started to fill out again during the 1980s.
