Editor’s LETTER
F
ew things scream summer like al-fresco dining and July is the month to make this happen. We’ve hunted down the city’s best suntraps to while away the balmy evenings on page 50. Summer time also signals festival fever but for those unwilling to travel far and wide, Cornbury Festival is the event for you. This glorious three-day festival of frivolity and live music is back with one of its strongest line-ups ever. Take a look at our What’s On page to read all about it. From festivals to fashion - we’ve got a fantastically tropical shoot that provides inspiration for sultry summer nights, along with a selection of the season’s best swimsuits. You can wear one whilst poolside in paradise. Or, if you’ll be topping up your tan on home turf, turn to page 56 to get serious wanderlust over our Indonesian escape. We’ve also talked tennis with Boris Becker and caught up with Ruby Wax. I very much hope you enjoy the issue. Ciao!◆

A
16-year-old Boris Becker was brought to San Lorenzo fresh from his success at Queen’s Club by tennis legend and coach, Ion Tiriac. He ordered a steak and pasta, followed by a lemon sorbet, and that became his pre-match ritual. It was what he ordered the night before his record-breaking singles victory in 1985. ‘That became my diet before every single match,’ Boris says, sitting now at a corner table in San Lorenzo Wimbledon over 30 years later with Annabel Croft. Founded in 1969, San Lorenzo is as much a part of Wimbledon heritage as tennis whites, strawberries and Champagne. Stationed at the bottom of the hill in this charming borough, the upmarket Italian boasts a list of diners that reads like the Wimbledon tournament leader board. Ghigo Berni and his brother Paolo – sons of Lorenzo and Mara Berni of the legendary San Lorenzo in Beauchamp Place – have fed just about every tennis champion of the past five

decades. Andre Agassi had the local mothers of Wimbledon fawning over him as he dined and Martina Navratilova hosted her retirement party here. Stan Smith comes here to eat and his picture hangs on the wall. Last year, the place was frequented by Maria Sharapova and the Williams sisters, to name just a few. The floors are tiled with cream slabs and the walls hung with quirky and considered art. Alongside Stan Smith are black and white shots of Nastase and Adriano Panatta. Beyond the bar is a second, quieter dining room and outside an al fresco area. We’re here with restaurant owner Ghigo and Annabel Croft - former British number one tennis player, presenter and frequent visitor to San Lorenzo. The three share an affectionate friendship that dates back to Boris and Annabel’s playing days. Tennis stars these days are arguably fitter than ever, thanks to fierce coaches and stricter diets, but what was impressive about the players of the young Tiriac generation was their ability to perform exceptionally on court whilst maintaining a spirited social life off it. Annabel and Boris reminisce fondly on

ARTS & CULTURE / PROFILE (FROM LEFT TO RIGHT) BORIS, ANNABEL AND GHIGO AT SAN LORENZO WIMBLEDON
GHIGO BERNI & his brother PAOLO have FED JUST ABOUT EVERY TENNIS GREAT of the past FIVE DECADES Wednesday nights spent at China White and dinners-turned-discos at Tramp. ‘I remember seeing Boris, hobbling around on crutches,’ Annabel recalls. ‘He was 16 and beating Bill Scanlon on court two, but he’d sprained his ankle. I remember going to a nightclub and he was there on his crutches,’ she says. ‘It was an era when players were much more photographed,’ Ghigo tells us. ‘We would have paparazzi here all the time, especially for people like Gabriela Sabatini and Annabel. I remember those days really fondly.’ It was during this time - when Boris was here pretty much every night, at the same table - that he met Ghigo and his family. ‘We’re talking 32-33 years ago. I don’t think I’ve eaten more food out of any other restaurant in the world,’ Boris says. Ghigo’s parents are the godparents of Boris’
children and there is even a pizza named after his son, Noah. Boris’ generation was the last to really enjoy a decent dinner and drink after knocking a few balls about on the court. ‘We underestimate - especially the top players - how much pressure they are under now,’ he says. ‘They’re all part of a bigger picture and that is the entertainment industry. You have kids and young adults watching - impressionable people - and the players become role models even though they don’t want to be,’ he explains. So did he realise the magnitude of what he’d achieved at the time? Not at all; he believes ‘it was the innocence of youth. It was the mid 80’s and sports didn’t really exist in Germany at the time, with the exception of a few footballers.’ When he hit that last brutal serve against Kevin Curren to lift the Wimbledon title, he became part of championship folklore. We look back now and see that of course he was always going to do well. Playing abilities aside, he had the mentality to completely disengage with outside pressures when on the court. ‘I think it’s one of the harshest sports in terms
19 USE_B&C_June17_BORIS BECKER.indd 19
of psychology, because you can’t really prepare for it,’ Annabel says. Boris credits Tiriac for this winning sports mindset. ‘He would say the purpose of today is to win the match. So what do we have to do today to win the match?’ Boris recalls. This strength of mind is the mark of a great player. Boris believes it’s part of the battle; 'You don’t win a tennis match just by hitting the ball,’ he says. ‘As a coach, I thought it was important to practise a lot, but I rated the match mentality much higher,’ he continues. This was certainly evident during his stint with Djokovic. After crashing out of the French Open final, Djokovic went on to lift the Wimbledon trophy under the guidance of Boris. ‘It’s how you react and deal with certain situations that counts,’ he tells us, ‘It’s not what you do on the practise court, it’s what you do in the match.’ Boris now lives in Wimbledon and his career has turned full circle. This year we’ll see him commentating at the tournament again. And as for coaching, will we see him return to the sidelines? ‘I wouldn’t rule it out, a few players have asked me - both male and female,’ he says. ‘Coaching is a very time consuming commitment though. I’m on standby for my family, but you also have to be on standby for the players,’ he explains. For him, the ‘weekend is the weekend’ which he enjoys at the home he has made here in Wimbledon, still eating three times a week at San Lorenzo. It’s easy to see why he, Annabel and so many tennis greats have developed such a fondness for the place. It has the alluring charm of an authentic Italian trattoria and with food to match. As a mecca for the tennis world, and with the Wimbledon fortnight on the horizon, this iconic eatery will always be an inherent aspect of Wimbledon’s heritage. ◆

ristóbal Balenciaga was indisputably one of the most influential fashion designers of the 20th century. Revered by his contemporaries, including Coco Chanel and Hubert de Givenchy, his exquisite craftsmanship, pioneering use of fabric and innovative cutting set the tone for the modernity of the late 20th century fashion. This spring, the V&A have

opened the first ever exhibition exploring the work of this illustrious designer and the influence he continues to have on modern fashion. It is the first of its kind to look at Balenciaga’s unique approach to designing and showcases pieces by his protégés and contemporary designers working in the same innovative way today. The exhibition marks the centenary of the opening of Balenciaga’s first fashion house in San Sebastian and the 80th anniversary of the opening of his famous fashion house in Paris. Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion focuses on the latter part of Balenciaga’s long career in the 1950s and 1960s, arguably one of his most creative periods. It was during these years that he not only dressed some of the most renowned women of the time, but also introduced revolutionary shapes including the tunic, the sack, ‘baby doll’ and shift dress – all of which remain style staples today. Highlights include ensembles made by Balenciaga for Hollywood actress Ava Gardner, dresses and hats belonging to socialite and 1960s fashion icon Gloria Guinness, and pieces worn by one of the world’s wealthiest women, Mona von Bismarck, who commissioned everything from ballgowns to gardening shorts from the couturier. The exhibition exemplifies his lasting impact on fashion through the work of those who trained with him and those who reflect the legacy of his vision today. ◆ On now until 18 February 2018 at the Victoria & Albert Museum, open daily 10:00 - 17:30 and Fridays 10:00 - 21:30 Cromwell Road, Knightsbridge, SW7 vam.ac.uk

Wax LYRICAL
Ruby Wax is frazzled. Who isn't? We catch up with her ahead of her new show that fuses comedy and mindfulness Interview Pendle Harte
PENDLE HARTE: How frazzled are you today, Ruby? RUBY WAX: Not frazzled at all! I do have to write a book, but that’s a pleasure and it’s so interesting that it doesn’t feel like a job. It’s called How To Be Human and I’m writing it with a monk and a neuroscientist. It has all the answers.
University offers a master’s programme in Mindfuness and Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) so I thought there must be something to it. I only did it because they offered it at Oxford. PH: Tell us about the show? RW: It’s a comedy. You can give good information when you make people laugh. Bill Bryson does it and he’s my hero, dotting everything through with comedy. I go off piste a lot. The show isn’t about depression at all – you can’t keep on about the same thing. There are lots of kids in the audience – it isn’t old fans. It’s a fantastically entertaining show that remains conversational as well as being funny and insightful. It’s your passport to saner living. I might not be sane myself but I do a pretty good imitation.
PH: That sounds promising. What are the answers? RW: A lot of the book is their conversation. Part of our brain still functions as if it is hundreds of thousands of years ago and we haven’t yet learned to adjust our dials for the 21st century. That's why we're frazzled. PH: What is the definition of frazzled? RW: We’re all frazzled. Everybody is. It’s not being stressed, it’s thinking about stress. It’s getting stressed about stress. It’s thinking ‘why have I only got 15,000 friends on Facebook?’ and ‘why don’t I make enough money?’ We’re living in such a wired society and everybody feels that way. Even kids do. PH: Your book Frazzled advises mindful methods. Do they work long term? RW: You have to keep pumping it – it’s like going to the gym. You have to work the muscle in your brain. Oxford

BEING FRAZZLED
isn't being stressed – it's GETTING stressed ABOUT STRESS
PH: Is it going well? RW: So far it’s more popular than any of my other shows. I have hit the zeitgeist with the subject and it’s not a lecture – it’s funny. It’s totally scripted but I make it feel spontaneous, and then I let the audience talk and it really is spontaneous. PH: Do you find it exhausting? RW: No! Because I love it. I go out during the interval and talk to people – hearing their stories will never drain me. I hate

parties and making SMALL TALK
– that's exhausting. Doing the show isn't cocktail parties and talking to people about how successful they are and making small talk – that’s exhausting. PH: When did you first notice you were funny? RW: Alan Rickman told me when we were at the RSC. I wanted to be a classical actress and he told me it wouldn’t happen and that I should write some comedy instead. I knew at high school that I never got the good-looking boys and that being funny was my ammo. These days, at home, I’m not just funny – I’m an object of total ridiculousness. PH: What does a normal day look like for you? RW: There is no normal day. I do these eclectic jobs – this Saturday I’m teaching then doing a thing at parliament. I can work anywhere – I’ll get on a train and that’s my office.
Ruby Wax photographed by Steve Ullathorne
PH: What do you do to relax? RW: Kayak. Sleep a lot. Travel to Cape Town.
23 NH_June17_Ruby_Wax.indd 23
PH: What are you doing next? RW: I hate that question. I mean, isn’t this enough? I’ll probably do a tour for the book. I’ll need the monk and the neuroscientist though – I’ve got the monk, he’s moved in with us actually. I call him my airfreshener. He’s hilarious. But he’s very in demand (his mother was in the Kumars) and he’s kind of a movie star monk. The neuroscientist is a teacher at Yale – he’s really good looking. ◆

hen you have wrinkles, acne scars and large pores, it's easy to give into defeat. But, as I know only too well, every time you look in the mirror you concentrate on your faults and it's constantly demoralising. Luckily for those who can't take time out from everyday life to go under the knife and hide inside, there's Venus Viva. This non-surgical facial uses a device that emits nonfractional radiofrequency waves below the surface of the skin to heat the cells and stimulate the body's natural collagen production. With small needles penetrating into the upper epidermis, I'd be lying if I said it is completely pain-free but my therapist Clare Marie Peters applies a thick layer of numbing cream before my first session so it isn't too bad. A bonus: the downtime is minimal. Slightly flushed with a few stamp marks, my face feels really hot physically but visually isn't bad enough to draw unwanted attention. The best bit, however, is the improved collagen production that gives my skin a dewy, luminous glow. To see a real change in the skin quality and texture, at least three sessions are needed but, in spacing these two weeks apart you could have brilliant skin in just six weeks. I'd happily recommend the Venus Viva to anyone who's fed up of their imperfect skin. ◆ JOSHI CLINIC

FOOD & DRINK / REVIEW
The place IS PACKED with IN-THE-KNOW FOODIES, emptying plates AT A RATE of knots.
Madame D’s Rice, spice and all things nice at this new Himalayan joint Wo r d s H a n n a h H o p k i n s
I
f you like your spicy food, bag a table at Madame D’s, a dining den on Commercial Street showcasing oriental Himalayan flavours. Fans of Gunpowder, the home style Indian kitchen, may well have already heard of Madame D’s, which comes from the same owners - Harneet and Devina Baweja. But their new venture is different in both size and flavour. Marked only by awnings overhanging the windows, Madame D’s echoes the ramshackle back-rooms that once littered the Commercial Street rag route. Set above the neon sign-posted Charles King Harman
bar, the pared back room instantly puts you at ease. Packed with quirks leftover from the former curry house it inhabits, there are lights made from chutney pot clusters and old curry house chair backs forming the bar. We loved the atmospheric smoky candlelight and distressed walls. Makeshift industrial trestle tables and long wooden benches line the room for communal feasting, while dishes and specials are written on chalk boards - a perfect setup for the sharing plates, dips and sauces to come. First though, are the cocktails. We opt for a surprisingly refreshing absinthe, bourbon
49 City_July17_FOOD REVIEW.indd 49
and lime concoction, as well as a delightful rose spritz. Both are light and the perfect accompaniment to our nibbles - prawn crackers with szechuan pepper salt and a punchy dip. The succinct menu from Harneet and Head Chef Nirmal Save is a love letter to the darker, oriental palate of the Himalayas, drawing on the flavours of Indian, Nepalese, Tibetan and Chinese cooking and using local ingredients. With dishes designed to share we opt for six or so plates including Maa’s Kashmiri Lamb Chops, the Venison and Vermicelli Doughnut, Tangraegg Fried Rice and the Gunpowder Aloo Chaat. Stand outs include the spicy and salty Hakka Chilli Paneer and melt-in-the-mouth Gold Coin Naga Beef Puffs. All of this deliciousness ranges from £3 to £15 a dish. Bargain. To finish we try out one of the new puddings - a take on a classic rice pudding served with hibiscus soup. It’s a sweet, delicious finish to a rich meal. By the time we leave the place is packed with inthe-know foodies, emptying plates at a rate of knots and securing Harneet and Devina Baweja’s place as the king and queen of the food scene. u M A DA M E D’ S 76 Commercial Street, E1; 020 7247 1341 madame-d.com

EAST EATS
From authentic Italian to nutritious juices; linecaught fish, foraging and some of the city’s best wings, Canalside has a range of eateries to satisfy all tastes. We tried out a few of our favourites…
One of London’s most talked about bars has found a second home at Canalside. Great news for anyone looking to kick back with a refreshing, revitalising drink in a unique and trendy setting. Four Quarters is famous for immersing its visitors in an atmosphere that is both nostalgic and fun. Where else can you quench your thirst with a quality cocktail or craft beer and relive your childhood by whiling the hours away on a selection of classic arcade games? ◆ facebook.com/fourquartersbar

One of our favourite breakfast spots has made a triumphant return to its original home in East London. The Breakfast Club has been a firm favourite amongst city-goers on the hunt for waffles, eggs and everything in between. This new location means your avocado is served with a canal-side view. Don’t be fooled by the name, The Breakfast Club does a mean all-day menu too, featuring burgers, wraps, chicken and more. ◆ thebreakfastclubcafes.com

FOOD & DRINK / EATING OUT Shane’s on Canalside is a gastronomic delight for meat-lovers. We begin with ham hock croquettes - crisp batter giving way to a warm, indulgent centre - and the wood pigeon breast which is cooked to rosy perfection. My companion opts for the wild rabbit burger which delivers a sophisticated twist on the well loved classic and is brought together with the sweetness of beetroot. My Bavette steak is expertly seared, succulent and flavourful. We share a chocolate fondant for dessert; its oozing centre begging to be Instagrammed. The tart lemon curd cuts through the richness of this decadent dish and keeps it from being too sickly. ◆ shanesoncanalside.com
4. MOTHER
This is a healthy food haven serving up a selection of nutritious and delicious juices, smoothies, salads and snacks. We tried the Mother Green Juice. A vibrant blend of mint, celery, cucumber and apple, finished with zingy hits of ginger and lemon. Sitting by the canal sipping this vitamin-boosting juice is the perfect respite from London city-life. ◆ mother.works
5. GOTTO

unfussy yet fresh Italian cuisine. Highlights included the string-thin courgette fries incredibly moorish and indulgent - and the tagliatelle (gluten-free options available) with mussels, courgette and tomato, which was uncomplicated yet flavour-packed. Those with a sweet tooth, meanwhile, shouldn't miss out on the tiramisu which was coffee-moist and creamy down to the last spoonful. ◆ gotto.co.uk

Craft beer is having a moment. Mason & Company has a range of 20 different types and frequently hosts guest breweries. This extensive range pairs perfectly with their equally delicious Italian-American street food. It comes courtesy of Capish, who are famous for their meatballs. If you’re in the mood for a non-boozy beverage, they also have excellent coffee from local roasters The Roasting Shed. ◆ masonandcompany.co.uk
7. R A N D Y ’ S 3
The Randy’s concept was conceived from a mutual love of chicken wings between friends, so it should come as no surprise that these are seriously some of the city’s best wings. We order five out of six on the menu, along with a side of furious fries and a crisp, chilled bottle of Chenin Blanc. The buffalo wings deliver a tangy punch, cooled with a creamy blue cheese sauce; these are my companion’s wings de choix. I’m hard pushed to choose between the Korean inspired Gangnam wings - sweet, sticky and moorish - and the beer battered Hanoi variety. The slow-cooked Bombay wings are fragrant, succulent and fall off the bone and the Gong Bao pack a spicy punch. ◆ randyswingbar.co.uk

rustrated by the avalanche of cutesy prints adorning parental essentials after the birth of her daughter, Laura Adeshiyan decided there was room in the market for something a little bit classier. She wanted products that made her feel like herself again, and with a background in fashion retail she felt able to design something she wanted to buy. The result is Mama Rules, offering beautifully soft muslins with refreshingly modern prints. They're also marvellous multi-taskers: each piece serves as a breastfeeding cover, light blanket, pram cover, swaddle, or burp cloth, but they can also look great as scarfs or sarongs - proving you don't have to give up on style just because you have a little one in tow. ◆

sn’t it a dead language?” That's what pupils ask on discovering we have a Latin club at Repton. But Latin is back, enjoying a resurgence in recent years which is gratifying for those of us who endured the uncool years. All that time, learning vocab in dusty forgotten classrooms, and endlessly responding to friends’ incredulous queries as to what we were wasting our time for, means we're placed to answer the leading question….
Knowing Latin, one can appreciate JK Rowling’s debt to Latin in her spells and curses; and that, without Virgil’s Aeneid, there would surely have been no Dante’s Divine Comedy, one of the greatest works of world literature, and influential as a source of inspiration ever since. It provides a route to a huge range of other subjects such as history, literature, philosophy, theology and archaeology. Twinned with ancient Greek, the scope is further widened: a treasure trove which includes Homer and Hesiod, the Greek tragedians and a wealth of philosophical works. Latin broadens the mind and not just the tongue.
T H E L I N G U I ST I C ARGUMENT A prima facie…: (at first glance….) A knowledge of Latin helps with learning the Romance languages WITHOUT VIRGIL’S AENEID, SURELY DANTE, ABOVE, WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN (romantic not because of their ABLE TO WRITE THE DIVINE COMEDY? perception of love but for their relation to the Romans…). The most widelyspoken of these are Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, and Romanian. Similarities in both vocabulary and grammatical structure mean a knowledge of Latin is helpful. The joy of being able to work out a word in Spanish and unlock a sentence because of your knowledge of Latin is akin to scoring a goal. Understanding the logic of Latin grammar is invaluable for grasping the intricacies of English as well as Arabic grammar. Although neither of these is its directly mirrored in Latin, understanding the terminology and how it ‘works’, helps one to appreciate and describe how these languages function more readily. With around 60% of English words derived Latin literature, indebted to that of ancient from Latin, it increases both vocabulary, Greece, extends through the masterful prose articulacy and an appreciation of language. of the Golden Age of the Republic, beyond the Empire to the Europe of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, where Latin was the T H E C U LT U R A L C L I N C H E R lingua franca of the educated. A little less prosaic, but hardly less compelling… The study of Latin leads naturally on to With Latin one can encounter the military reading Latin literature and encountering first history of Julius Caesar, the stylistic paragon hand, and in the original language, texts which that is Cicero, the witty and ribald poetry of have influenced European and world culture. Ovid, the works of Descartes and Isaac Newton.

THE BRAIN TRAINING Audentis Fortuna iuvat (Fortune favours the brave) Reading Latin is like code breaking. Once one understands the grammatical structure, one can begin to translate and understand. As English novelist Dorothy L. Sayers argued in her 1947 essay, The Lost Tools of Learning, “The best grounding for education is the Latin grammar... not because Latin is traditional and mediaeval, but simply because even a rudimentary knowledge of Latin cuts down the labour and pains of almost any other subject by at least 50%.”
J U ST F O R T H E L OV E O F I T Ars gratia artis (art for art’s sake) Latin enthralls and fascinates. Our years spent exploring the Classical world at school enriched our lives. The members of our Latin Club at Repton are united by their curiosity and appreciation of this language, discovering it is alive in situations they had not thought of. It may be dead but Latin remains very much alive and kicking! ◆ Lucy Holland & Charlotte Hughes D’Aeth Repton School Dubai

hey say “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life”. Well the same could be said for Indonesia - a beguiling string of volcanic islands home to resplendent beaches, Komodo dragons and jungles sheltering elephants, orangutans and tigers. It has copious amounts to offer travellers and with thousands of islands, reveals itself to you more and more each trip. Having visited on a gap year I was thrilled to be returning to the country as a proper grownup, this time visiting Seminyak on Bali. We stayed at The Oberoi, a beachfront sanctuary boasting world-renowned service and some of the best sea views in Bali. An enormous swimming pool filled with stone turtle fountains takes centre stage in the grounds, surrounded by tasselled parasols that overlook a stretch of beach. You can peer at the crashing waves and the distant tourist touts from the extreme comfort of a sunbed predressed with towels and equipped with sun cream, cold water and frangipani scented facial mist. Heaven. Further back from the sea and dotted throughout beautifully tended gardens are traditional thatched-roof lanais and private villas.
INTERIORS INSPIRED BY NATURE AT NIHIWATU
VILLAS ARE BUILT INTO THE NATURAL LANDSCAPE
We opted for a luxury villa with a secluded courtyard garden, rock pond and raised dining pavilion, but the cheaper Lanai rooms are just as impressive. Inside you’ll find marble floors, enormous king-sized beds with hand-carved wooden headboards, four types of pillow, thick curtains to keep out the light and excellent air conditioning. A lovely bathroom contains more fluffy towels than you could ever need, plus two sinks and sumptuous bath scrubs, soaps and moisturisers. Throughout the rooms are well-thought-out details such as antimosquito spray, a day bag for the beach and both indoor and outdoor slippers. Dinner is a relaxed affair at the romantically-lit Kura Kura restaurant, named after the turtles that nest on the nearby sands. Expect European and Indonesian delicacies, with innovative dishes like seared Pacific scallops, Indonesian satay, udang goreng tiger prawns and Rijsttafel, a sumptuous legacy of Bali’s Dutch colonial tradition. Breakfast is served in the delightful, open-air Frangipane café where there is a huge range of options including duck or chicken eggs, pork or beef sausages and dozens of juices. Should you wish to leave the complex,

NIHIWATU is one of the MOST PRISTINE resorts on THIS PLANET Seminyak’s market, health cafes and boutiques are well worth a visit, as is Ubud, roughly a two-hour drive. Based in the uplands of Bali, the area is known as a center for traditional crafts and dance and is dotted with Hindu temples and shrines, surrounded by paddy fields. Also famed for its food scene, we stop off at Casa Luna restaurant for a traditional Balinese cookery class. Headed up by chef Janet De Neefe and her friendly staff, we discover the herbs, spices and techniques of Balinese cooking as well as the ceremonial and cultural significance of food. Preparing a lavish feast as a group, we create chicken curry, wok-fried eggplant, coconut and anchovy sambal, bean-coconut salad and moreish sago pudding. Suitably stuffed, we return satiated and sleepy to The Oberoi. The next day, we hop on a quick private flight to Sumba - an island largely untouched by tourism. Despite being twice the size of Bali, Sumba’s population

barely reaches a sixth of Bali’s population. Nihiwatu - twice voted the world’s best hotel by Travel + Leisure magazine - is our destination. Once the preserve of savvy surfers, its unspoilt beaches attracted Claude and Petra Graves in 1988 as they searched for the perfect wave. They fell in love with the place and named it Nihiwatu, meaning “mortar stone”. By 2012, stories of the unregulated freedom and beauty of the resort reached American entrepreneur Christopher Burch, who came on board to expand the resort. An exotic combination of remote location and understated hedonism, it now attracts the global jet set and fashion elite.
TASSLED PARASOLS AT THE OBEROI'S OUTDOOR POOL
The OBEROI boasts some of the BEST SEA VIEWS in Bali The resort’s social and ecocredentials are top notch. Food miles are kept to a minimum: vegetables come of the resort’s own organic market garden; meat from its chicken farm; fish from the sea. Each of the 28 exquisite villas are designed to incorporate the surrounding nature, whether it’s swaying palms, colourful bougainvillea or dazzling ocean. We stay in one of Burch’s very own villas - perched upon a terrace with a spacious outdoor veranda, a private pool and a butler on speed dial. Interiors are open-plan, reflecting simple Indonesian architecture and using local materials like Alang Alang, teak and rattan. Exceptional villas aside, this hidden gem is for travellers in search of activitydriven experiences and unregulated freedom. There are countless things to do, from surfing, fishing and horse-riding
63 Chis_July17_ Indonesia.indd 63
to sunrise yoga, tours of the on-site chocolate factory and escorted trips to nearby villages. We try out the Spa Safari - a 90-minute trek through rice fields to Nihi Oka - a show-stopping area high on the cliffs. Greeted with fresh coconuts, you enjoy breakfast and lunch on a platform suspended among the trees and then head to a private section for unlimited spa treatments. Back at the resort there’s plenty more to entertain. The dreamy Boathouse bar, right on the edge of the waves, is a surfer’s paradise and offers spectacular sunsets. Ombak restaurant, overlooking the ocean, is ideal for intimate dinners as well as convivial feasts organised by the hotel like weekly BBQs and white parties. End your evening with a private outdoor cinema experience under the stars, but don’t forget to set your alarm for at least one early morning - you wouldn’t want to miss the chance to release baby turtle hatchlings into the ocean. They say Nihiwatu is on “the edge of wilderness” and with good reason. Offering authentic Indonesian experiences and surroundings in five-star luxury, it has to be one of the most beautiful and pristine resorts on this planet. ◆

No garden? Green up your indoor space with some leafy ferns. Just make sure you know a few basics first... Wo r d s S o p h i e L e e

erns are quite easy to maintain when you know how. They can be considered to be quite needy plants, but if cared for properly, they will reward you with lush green fronds all year round. Asplenium nidus or bird’s nest fern (pictured opposite) is a great indoor plant and looks quite different to other ferns. Moisture is very important for them to thrive and grow well. The attractive, spear-like fronds should look shiny when the plant is in good health. Ferns were extremely popular during the Victorian era and large collections were grown in conservatories, in terrariums or glass cases. Their popularity waned because they were easily damaged by coal res, but when central heating came along ferns came back into favour. Most ferns are not difficult to grow, but they will not tolerate neglect; if you go on holiday for a fortnight and forget
Ferns will not
TOLERATE NEGLECT; if you go on HOLIDAY for a FORTNIGHT and FORGET about them, they will NOT BE HAPPY
71 Chis_July17_Living_with_Plants.indd 71
about them, they will not be happy. Their compost must never be allowed to dry out and the surrounding air needs to be kept moist. They love being in bathrooms – if you keep them elsewhere, mist with water regularly. Many ferns are formed of a rosette of divided arching leaves called fronds, which unfold into a beautiful performance of foliage. These fronds are delicate and need room to develop, so when putting a fern next to the rest of your plant gang make sure they have space to grow. If any fronds die off, make sure you remove them so new ones can grow. My favourite ferns are the Nephrolepis exaltata (Boston fern) and Asparagus setaceus (aspara gus fern). The Adiantum (maidenhair fern) comes in at a sly third – however, it is not as forgiving as other ferns if you forget to water it as its leaves go very crispy very quickly. Keep ferns nice and warm, at around 16–21 °C (60–70 °F). Most people think that ferns are shade lovers, but that is not true. They love indirect light; an east or north-facing windowsill is ideal. Ferns also love to be kept moist, so make sure you give them a regular misting. Water them from the bottom and never let the soil dry out – this does not mean you should keep the soil soggy, as waterlogging will lead to rotting; just keep the soil moist. Do not water them as much in winter as they do not drink as much water in the colder months. Most ferns are fast-growing and will need repotting annually, but be careful not to bury any part of the fern’s stems or leaves as this could cause the plant to rot. ◆

Should you invest in London’s buy-to-let market?
I
t’s a question crossing many people’s minds as they plan for their financial future in the capital. If you were to tell friends that you’re planning to become a landlord, you would most likely be met with a wall of scepticism and furrowed brows. Over the past two years, they will tell you, landlords have felt the increasingly expensive effects of government action. Landlords buying a property now pay an extra 2% Stamp Duty, and many of the tax perks that landlords once enjoyed have been reigned back, and will disappear by 2020. On top of that, many boroughs in London have, or are considering, introducing compulsory landlord licensing. This can be both costly and a tangle of regulatory tape to navigate. For many investors, London’s buy-tolet market remains an enticing prospect despite these hurdles to entry. The number of rented homes in London exceeded the number of owner-occupied
ones recently – 898,000 rented households compared to 883,000. Overall, the number of owner-occupied households has dropped by 17% over the past decade. Demand for rental properties is increasing, unfortunately for tenants faster than inflation - at 3.2% - according to the most recent LSL Buy-to-Let Index. It also reveals that London still has the most expensive rental properties in the UK at an average of £1,286 per property. “[Recent] predictions that a flood of landlords would abandon their buy-to-let portfolios have been greatly exaggerated, in fact we have seen very few clients exit the rental market this year – most are actively looking to invest further,” says Marc von
Grunherr, Lettings Director at Benham & Reeves Residential Lettings. “Property continues to remain a very stable investment in light of stock market volatility and historically low interest rates," von Grunherr adds. “The fundamentals continue to remain strong and that is why our outlook on London property continues to be bullish. Professional investors have been able to navigate these legislation changes and capitalise on these localised rental hotspots.” Rents are also rising as demand outstrips supply. The good news for tenants is that it is not a blanket rule; demand and supply varies from postcode to postcode, so not everywhere is a hot house of increasing rents. With 16 branches across the capital, one of London's largest letting agents Benham & Reeves Residential Lettings has research that reveals the best postcodes to live in if you’re a tenant and, potentially, the best to consider if you’re a landlord looking for the areas with the strongest demand – and therefore fastest-rising rents (below). As you’ll notice from these postcodes, the most popular areas for tenants at the moment are the areas of London to the south and south west of the river which, until relatively recently, were less popular areas to rent a home. Sky-high rents in central London and more fashionable parts of North London have pushed many trend-seeking young workers into the arms of southern postcodes and, in particular, Brixton, which is currently one of the most sought-after areas to rent in London among younger renters. Best for landlords, where rents are rising fastest (+4% or more), are in south west.

here’s an outstanding bill for broken windows at the Hereford Arms pub in South Kensington after American servicemen smashed them during a baseball game. During the war, the soldiers were regulars in the area and played their national game in the nearby square, which they turned into a temporary baseball field. who stayed in homes converted into temporary barracks during the Second World War in Hereford Square. Some of these fell victim to an air raid and were razed, and a post-war apartment block was built on the site until developer Unbranded London decided to restore the terrace to its former glory. Now, it’s unveiled three restored townhouses which are a far cry from their former incarnation. The properties range in price from £8.56m - £9.25m with more information available from Savills (0207 581 5234).

t £15.5 million, Dusty Springfield’s former home is now £1 million cheaper than when it first came on the market in 2016. The Art Deco house has seven bedrooms, five reception rooms, a garden, and a roof terrace with far-reaching views overlooking Holland Park. There’s also a swimming pool, gym, sauna and hot tub. The American couple selling the house aren’t too bothered about the reduction, one would imagine, as they bought it 10 years ago for just under £3 million. Dusty Springfield lived at the property at the height of her fame during the late 1960s and early 1970s, a period which saw her release five albums and enjoy several hits, most famously "What I Done To Deserve This" and "Son of a Preacher Man." The property is now for sale with agent John Taylor (02032 841 888).

ast year, press reports revealed Strictly Come Dancing's selfstyled ‘Mr Nasty’ Craig Revel Horwood had been forced to move into a hotel for five months after his Hampshire home was damaged in a flood and his London pad was occupied by two Strictly dancers. He recently told The Sun that Cameron Mackintosh lent him £40,000 in 1997 to buy the house in Camden for £149,000. He has accepted an offer on the Grade II-listed two-bedroom which had been on the market for £1.2m. ome of the world’s most famous rock and roll albums were recorded at Wessex Recording Studio, including The Clash's "London Calling", "Never Mind the Bollocks" by the Sex Pistols and Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." Other musicians to have used the studio include REM, Coldplay and David Bowie. The building started out in 1881 as a church hall but was converted during the early 1960s into a recording studio and then bought in 1965 by Beatles producer George Martin who, in 2003, sold it to developer Neptune, which converted it into apartments. Be guided through London's ever colourful and evolving market.
I
f there’s one thing about the London property market that is a constant, it’s the superlatives that most use to describe it. Extraordinary, outrageous, most expensive, smallest, fastest-rising, largest, most famous, highest-priced. I could go on. The capital has achieved them all – and that’s just over the past year. Here’s our guide to some surprising, and of course, amazing facts about the city’s property market. 1
We’re moving
Londoners move 4.6 miles on average, well under the national average of 6.6 miles and the shortest distance moved in the UK. Removals website buzzmove.com crunched the numbers from among 51,000 house moves it’s organised since 2013. Home movers in the East of England move the furthest at 12 miles, followed by Wales and the South of England. “This data shows that the myth that people don’t travel far when they move is just that – a myth,” said Damien Seaman, Head of Brand at buzzmove.com. “People move for a wide variety of reasons, but this data shows that people are clearly willing to relocate quite far away according to their circumstances.” 2
London’s a cr ow d
If you think London is too crowded then remember that the city only recently surpassed its 1939, pre-war total of 8.62 million.

All prime property in London is currently dropping in value, research by Savills has revealed this month. Its report on the market shows that prime central homes have reduced by 6.9% compared to a year ago, while prime NW London is down 3.2% and prime SW 4.4%. The area with the smallest reductions year on year is prime West London. 6

The top pick of Justin Marking, head of residential at Savills, for 2017 is the suburban restoration project, which he says is where you can “add value and take advantage of the differentiation between London and the country, which still exists”. R e n ts i n r eve rs e
The prime rental market in London has been sliding for a while now, particularly in the £1,000 to £1,500 a week market where rents have fallen by 7.6% year on year, according to Knight Frank. 8
