y the time you read this, the tennis will be in full swing. Whether you love it or can't bear it, nobody in southwest London will be able to avoid the crowds, the chat and the general tennis fever that breaks out at this time of year. With all its champagne and strawberries, Wimbledon is the sporting event that even non-sporty types love – and few things define a London summer more than the soothing sound of rhythmic batting and balling coming from the television. Anyone who hasn't managed to get tickets for the big games is well catered for with countless screenings all over town (so anyone trying to avoid the whole thing is unlikely to succeed). We've gone overboard with summer excitement in this issue. Along with
9 B&C_July16_EDS_LETTER.indd 9
much talk of summer fashion (for us, it's either floral or folky and we're hugely keen on anything Mexican-inspired) we have a big focus on things to do outdoors in the coming months. There's an extensive overview of London's many imminent festivals, ranging from music to comedy to food in all areas of our urban sprawl. But that's not to say that there's nothing going on indoors – We've been excited to try out some new recipes from the Smokehouse restaurants and look at injecting a new dose of colour into our interiors with a focus on ombre – taking the colour fade fad from hair to home. We hope you enjoy the issue.

ike strawberries and cream, summer and festivals come hand in hand. But, while many of us long for hazy weekend parties, others can’t think of anything worse. With no electricity, little signal and (thank you, British summer) a lot of mud and rain, festivals can be more than a tad unbearable. Thankfully, for die-hard city kids, the number of festivals inside London is high. So high, in fact, that you really don’t need to leave home to get your fix. To prove our point, here’s a roundup of this year’s best...
BARCLAYCARD BRITISH SUMMER TIME
1~10 July Hyd e Park Please try and find a line-up better than this because we’re pretty sure no other festival in London has got it so sweet. Taking place over two weeks, headliners include Stevie Wonder, Florence and the Machine and Carole King. The real gems,

however, are hidden in the small print: Pharrell Williams, Corrine Bailey Rae and Mystery Jets will all be taking to the stage. Inside the gates you’ll also find fairground rides, gourmet street food vans and live comedy acts. Nominated for five festival awards last year (including the coveted award for best toilets), you’re guaranteed a proper festival experience with your bed just a tube ride away. An annual must. ◆ West Carriage Drive, W2; bst-hydepark.com
WIRELESS
8~10 July Fin sbury Park Now in its 11th year, Wireless is well established and in spite of the fact that it’s moved from central London to the north, acts remain A-lister: Calvin Harris, Craig David and The 1975 will all be performing. It’s this line-up of big names that makes Wireless the festival for anyone who loves chart music but can’t face a grimy weekend away. Alongside the more mainstream acts, organisers have got plenty

of up-and-coming talent on the bill and although none will be truly alternative, they do give this event a bit of depth. While the pop, dance and urban festival will give you the opportunity to tick off many a chart favourite, it is, more than anything else, a party for people who know how to let loose. ◆ Endymion Road, N4; wirelessfestival.co.uk

Held in seminal venue, The Bedford, this comedy festival takes your favourite acts away from the big lights of television and p uts them back in their natural habitat: the UK’s small stand-up comedy bars. It’s this that makes The Balham Comedy Festival truly special. Each intimate show makes ad-lib possible and gives the comic

Back for the fourth year running, this weekend promises punters a taste of the best world class craft with over 30 independent breweries chosen to attend by the beer-obsessed organisers. While well-known brands such as Brewdog and Beavertown will be in attendance, more niche Scandinavian and Estonian brewers – such as Sori Brewing – will be travelling all the way to Bethnal Green in the name of good ale. In total, 250 beers will be ready for tasting so you are pretty much guaranteed to find your dream brew. This, dear friends, is the drinks festival of the summer. BBC GOOD FOOD
27~29 August Hampton Court Palace Organised by Britain’s number one food media brand, this is must for all of those who love to cook and eat. In the same way that the team behind BBC Good Food bring the best chefs and coolest smallscale producers together at their indoor shows, this outdoor festival sees names such as Paul Hollywood and Michel Roux Jr alongside the artisans. It’s this clever mashup of the known and unknown that makes this weekend exciting. Indeed, while the famous chefs will be spilling their secrets on the Interview Stage, others will be teaching you how cook just like them in the Summer Theatre Kitchen. Held in the historical grounds of Hampton Court, all tickets include entrance to the palace so you can go and explore Henry VIII’s old home. regular facial may leave us feeling sleepy, relaxed and refreshed, but if you’re looking for something more effective without going under the knife, then try CACI, a non-surgical face lift treatment. Gaining popularity amongst celebrities, brides-to-be, and clients who are simply looking for that extra bit of definition, I am intrigued to find out what it’s all about. Clare welcomes me into the lovely familyrun salon and talks me through the procedure. Being in my early twenties, wrinkles aren’t my biggest concern at the moment, but a tighter, more defined and all-round healthier glow is on the wish list. Clare's passion is evident as she talks me through her journey to Bellissima. It seems her love for skincare began when she found the Dr Baumann range, a natural, plant-based beauty treatment, including all the goodness your face needs. Unusual is the easiest way to describe the CACI treatment. It’s not uncomfortable, but it’s not a relaxing facial either. It’s no nonsense, it's practical, and it's a scientific treatment that promises visible results. Clare describes it as a workout for your face. Prongs are applied, plumping up the face and stimulating collagen growth. CACI works best with a course of 10 treatments, before topping up monthly. But I can honestly say, on leaving the salon after just one treatment, my face is feeling tighter and my jaw line more defined. I look just like my usual self, but on a very good day. ◆

Pour in the water/stock. 2 Cover with a cartouche (see page 261) but no lid and leave to braise for 12-15 hours (or use other times/ temperatures, page 146). FOOD & DRINK / RECIPES 5 Before serving, heat some of the skimmed-off fat in a frying pan and fry the garlic until lightly browned; remove and reserve. Season the belly slices with salt, then sear on both sides, getting a good colour. 6 At the last minute, add a few spoonfuls of the stock and reduce to a sticky sauce to glaze the meat. Place on a serving plate and garnish with the sesame seeds, roasted garlic and spring onion.

Cook until the vegetables are tender and heavily charred. As they are cooked, remove them from the grill. Leave the leek until it is blackened all over, then peel off the outer layer. Roughly chop up all the veg. 3 Grill the dandelion leaves for a few seconds, and the lettuce halves on one side until almost black. 4 Combine all the grilled vegetables on a large platter. Dress with olive oil, lemon juice and salt, then sprinkle with the herbs, puffed wild rice, crispy garlic and Parmesan. ◆

8 For the anchovies, heat some oil in a deep-fat fryer or deep pan to 180°C. Mix the flour with enough cold sparkling water to make a thick batter. Dip the anchovies in the batter and deep-fry for a few minutes until crispy. 9 Drain briefly on kitchen paper. Eat by filling the lettuce leaves with the belly and any mixture of the side dishes. Play about with different fillings and drink lots of soju shots.

SOUL FOOD Beloved Italian restaurant Enoteca Turi may have moved location but its fantastic cuisine and family atmosphere remains unchanged
J
ust over 25 years ago, Enoteca Turi began its life as a regional Italian trattoria offering an authentic, cultural food experience to the local people of Putney. The restaurant has evolved over the years, but Enoteca Turi continues to stay true to its original idea based on the simple model of an Italian meal at home - a daily culinary experience with fresh seasonal produce and accompanying wine. The restaurant relocated at the start of this year after being unexpectedly uprooted from its former home. It has now found the perfect location in Pimlico Road, becoming part of a vibrant new community. Under the guidance of architect Francesco Draisci, the new premises were renovated in just six

weeks to create a carefully crafted, relaxed and stylish atmosphere. The end result has been remarkable: a golden wall adjusts with the light to give a different atmosphere at lunch and dinner, the acoustic ceiling absorbs sound, creating a soft background hum, whilst the long mirror panels open up the dining room which seats an intimate 50 covers, providing ample space between tables. Enoteca Turi comes from across the river with the same team, the same heart and the same ethos. Pugliese-born owner Giuseppe Turi’s philosophy echoes the honest simplicity of the regions, offering a food and wine sensation inspired by a culture rich in history, flavour and freshness. Over the years, Enoteca Turi has built up a great network of local suppliers. It gets its fish from the
IT HAS NOW FOUND the perfect location ON PIMLICO ROAD Cornish coast with the daily catches of the local fishermen, organic meat from the prestigious Rhug Estate in Wales, and seasonal vegetables from chosen farmers across Italy. As its namesake would suggest, translated from the Italian word “enoteca” meaning “wine library”, Enoteca Turi has a unique and impressive list of over 400 individually selected Italian wines, offering something for every palate and price level.

The move has been a stroke of luck, as just 15 minutes from Putney, the new destination is easily accessible for its former, loyal clientèle who continue to return in great numbers. The success of the move must be credited to General Manager, Cesare Papagna, Assistant Manuel Sorana and their team in the front, who ensured that the smooth transition meant that the restaurant was able to start again as though it had never closed. In the kitchen new Head Chef Gonzalo Luzarraga leads the existing team and with Sous Chef Fabio Angella, is providing dishes that reinterpret the regional Italian tastes.

n stepping inside our luxury villa it is impossible not to let a sense of serenity and peace wash over me. As it turns out, this is exactly what The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain is all about. Located a mere 11 km from the airport, the hotel consists of a 245-room resort located on 20 acres of private beachfront encircling a beautiful lagoon of deepest blue. Of the nearly 250 rooms on offer, 31 are suites and 42 are Club Level rooms but the real jewels in The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain’s crown are the 23 stunning seafront villas. These each boast three bedrooms, a private pool, beach access and a 24-hour butler service ready to cater to your every whim. The interiors are inspired by ‘60s architecture, with vibrant colours, wood panelling and exposed beams. There is also a generous dollop of South American and Mediterranean influence which melds together to create a uniquely engaging environment. Although inspired by ‘60s cool, there is nothing old fashioned about the facilities; the entire villa is kitted out
with state-of-the art amenities designed to make a guest’s stay as relaxing as possible. Their only drawback? You may never want to leave. After wandering around for a good fifteen minutes, fiddling with airconditioning settings and leaping onto one of the softest beds I have ever encountered, I finally turn my attention to the view. From some parts of the resort, guests can see the Arabian Gulf; from our villa we are treated to a fabulous, unrestricted view of picturesque Manama Bay. The most striking characteristic of the villas, however is their tranquillity. Nestled amidst the lush greenery of the gardens, they feel secluded without being isolated and offer the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of modern life. I am also struck by the blend of sophisticated elegance and laid-back, beachy vibes in the design. Access to the water is also key. The Kingdom of Bahrain boasts beautiful sunshine and warm temperatures attracting holidaymakers year-round. So, being able to dip into the crystal

THE SPA IS A HAVEN

TO LEAVE GUESTS
restored and relaxed Spend your time in the lap of luxury
waters of the lagoon at any time is a luxury that cannot be overstated and one that is valued highly by visitors to The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. When I am finally able to tear myself away from the villa, I start to explore the resort. Aside from the lovely decor and the many restaurants (which I will expand on later), I am drawn to The Ritz-Carlton Spa. A reason to stay all on its own, the spa is a haven offering relaxing treatments and signature products to leave guests refreshed and restored. I am particularly impressed by the thalassotherapy pool, a large, warm, mineral-rich pool with hydrotherapy jets to ease away aches and pains, allowing visitors to emerge revitalised and oh-sorelaxed. There is also the usual spa offering of massages and beauty treatments but all with that specific Ritz-Carlton finish that seems to add a sheen of luxury and of going the extra mile. For anyone wishing to exert a little energy, there is a fully stocked gym and also beachfront tennis courts and an air-conditioned indoor squash court. I am even able to indulge in a little retail therapy in the shopping arcade as I wander.
Having worked up an appetite, I have a serious decision to make; The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain has a veritable smorgasbord of restaurants and bars on offer and all sound irresistible. La Med lays on a fabulously lavish buffet, while The Gourmet Lounge specialises in Old World classics with decor inspired by La Belle Epoque - a truly regal dining experience. If you’re looking for something a little more exotic then Nirvana is for you; Executive Chef Mahipal Singh creates tantalising dishes complemented by the rich, sultry decor all set to the live music of the ‘Santoor’. Primavera serves up excellent Italian while Plums is the place

to go for a really good steak. Lighter bites are available from La Plage, the resort’s poolside restaurant (perfect for a lazy lunch with plenty of wine) and from Thai Lounge. A quintessential afternoon tea can be had at The Lobby Lounge but my personal favourite is the Burlington Club where guests can stop for a cocktail and a fine Cuban cigar before or after dinner. Another aspect of the hotel that makes it a destination for travellers is the Club Level. This is designed to create the feeling of a ‘hotel within a hotel’, to extend an extra level of exclusivity, comfort and personalized service. It is located on two dedicated floors to ensure privacy and offers a separate lounge area with complimentary food and drink throughout the day. It is a wrench to leave at the end of my stay as weeks could be spent here without ever needing (or wanting) to venture out of the resort. The amenable staff, glorious design and excellent facilities without a doubt put The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain among the leading luxury hotels in the world.
¢ The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain The villa rate starts at GBP 2112 per night excluding taxes. The villa has three bedrooms and can accommodate up to 6 guests. ritz-carlton.com

his is a brand to bookmark: an NYCbased upstart that reimagines classic forms in a fun, contemporary way. The SS16 collection is effortlessly lovable, from its simple summer dresses and pleated tops to dungaree-style rompers in seasonal stripes and earthy shades of peach and ochre. The brand’s blend of old-school charm and modern spirit is as Brooklyn as a refurbed brownstone, capturing perfectly the idea of something familiar and traditional brought coolly up-to-date by a discerning eye for design. What’s more, the company ticks all the right ethical and ecological boxes – and the quality of the garments is top-notch. Prints are subtle, colours vivid yet soft, lines fluid. Instant message A parliamentary inquiry has been launched amid concerns of a ‘sexting epidemic’ in schools, reports Amanda Constance Wo r d s A M a n d a C o n s ta n c e
I
s your child sharing ‘dodgy pics’ or ‘nudies’? This is apparently what teenagers call the nude pictures or sexually explicit texts they send to each other – they leave it to the media to call it sexting. If they’re in their early teens, it’s quite likely that your children are involved. Schools report a sexting epidemic with thousands of children sharing sexual imagery online. Very few realize that they are acting illegally and could face police action if caught. “Sexting is extremely common and increasing,” said Helen Harris, deputy head at a north London school. “Girls do not appear to care that their images will be there for ever or that strangers will be viewing them. They think we are very old-fashioned and everyone does this and it’s no big deal.” But there are many who are worried. Following research into the issue, in April this year a parliamentary select committee launched the first ever inquiry into the scale of sexual violence and intimidation in schools. Committee chairwoman and Tory MP Maria Miller warned that action needed to be taken urgently. "It's clear from the young people we've heard from that sexual harassment and sexual violence in schools is having a profound impact on their day-to-day lives. We need to address this issue now, and stop it from blighting the lives of another generation.” Sonia Livingstone, professor of Social Psychology at the London School of Economics, said sexting had become a normal behaviour among young people. Sexual activities and conversations have become more constant in youngsters’ lives “because every young person now has a phone in their hands”, she said. She suggested that sex education should start at the age of five. “Give it a lot more time, give
EVERY Young person NOW HAS A phone in THEIR HANDS young people a lot more respect and start much earlier,” she said. There’s no one kind of sexting incident. In some cases it may be coercive and connected to bullying. In others it’s seen as ‘having a laugh’. Girls fear falling victim to ‘snaking,’ when a boy befriends them, leads them on and asks for a picture only to distribute it among his friends, and beyond. When one teenage girl’s picture was shared after she sent it to a boy with whom she was in a long-distance relationship, her mother asked her why she’d sent it. “I thought we were in love,” she said. “I didn’t think he would do anything like that.” Year 9, when teenagers are 13 and 14 seems to be ‘peak sexting’. Although, an investigation by The Times with 50 secondary schools found that more than a
61 Chis_July_16_EDUCATION JULY.indd 61
third of all sexting cases involved 12 and 13 year olds. Alarmingly, it also found that one in 10 cases involved a ‘non-school adult’. Very few children realize that their actions could put them on the sex offenders’ register. Sending and distributing indecent pictures of anyone under the age of 18 is illegal. Maria Miller, the former culture secretary who chairs the women and equalities select committee, has urged education secretary Nicky Morgan to make it compulsory for schools to report to the police any sexting by or to under-18s. “It shouldn’t be under schools’ discretion,” she said. “It is an illegal act.” But many are concerned that the panic over young people sexting is overblown and that children should be supported and educated rather than punished. Jules Hillier, chief executive of Brook’s chief executive, the UK’s largest sexual health charity, thinks the media is at fault. “It is reported as though it were prevalent, as though every young person was doing it. It’s sensationalised and over-reported. “We know of course that young people are using mobile devices the whole time. We know there’s a trend for sending pictures with sexual content, but the extent to which that’s happening is very difficult to fully understand. A recent reliable survey found that 12% of 11- to 16-year-olds have seen or received sexual messages online. That’s obviously quite a big minority, but it’s still very much the minority. “We need to be helping young people understand some of the risks – helping them to be clear about what the law is. Whilst they quite often know that the age of consent is 16, they are not then aware they are still considered a minor if it comes to sending photos of themselves and would be in trouble for that kind of behaviour.”

t was revealed recently that 65% of Londoners intend to move out of the capital in the next five years. Whether it’s the prospect of battling the choked streets, dodging parking tickets or playing sardines on the tube, something is pushing people out. The research, by agent Strutt & Parker for its annual Housing Futures survey, also revealed that of those intending to move, 29% said they were looking to move to the South East, 10% to East Anglia and 8% to the South West – while 3% were looking to move overseas. But surprisingly few were looking for an easier, simpler way of life, the survey showed. Londoners, it would seem, want to get out of the smoke but still want the latte guzzling, cinema visiting, gym bashing, theatre attending, fashion finding, fast broadband life we enjoy in the capital. “It was also interesting to see that not all Londoners looking to leave the capital are expecting to move to a much larger home with a lot of land,” says Stephanie McMahon, Head of Research at Strutt & Parker. Whatever the reason for your move, here are some of the most popular places people choose to go to in each of the counties around London, as revealed by personal finance website TotalMoney.com. u

REBECCA NOONAN
I
t's safe to say I certainly didn’t dream of being and estate agent. Growing up, aside from the usual astronaut, fireman and policeman fantasies a young boy dreams of, I was very keen on motor racing. My father spent a long time racing cars and there was nothing more exciting for a young boy than attending a race and watching your old man wiz around Silverstone. Unfortunately, I haven’t ever managed to proceed past the odd track day, but I think it’s still a deep routed fantasy! I’m a Londoner through and through and I spent most of my youth between Fulham, Chiswick and Barnes. I also spent a lot of my social time in Wimbledon, largely as a result of the great pubs nearby. I’ve always had a keen eye on both graphic design and photography. I did a stint at Chelsea Art College studying exactly that. This obviously never progressed to a profession, but I did quite a lot of photography assistant work which was a great experience. Unfortunately, I was too brilliant at loading films and preparing sets to then be asked to make tea for the whole studio – which I didn’t love so much!
Each flat or house has it's own story and identifying it is a real privilege for me
As my career has progressed, I have a deep appreciation of interior design. I find it fascinating that you can walk into some properties and it can reflect the very character of the person. Each flat or house has it’s own story and identifying it is a real privilege for me. Unfortunately, there’s no glamorous story to my beginnings in estate agency. I started at a well known corporate estate agent largely because I had just returned from running a cocktail bar in Corsica and I had no cash and a couple of loose photography qualifications. I knew I could upsell a cocktail, so why not a house? Luckily my view on the industry has somewhat matured since then! I have been working as an agent across this area of London for around 12 years now, and I still get surprised at how much diversity
there is to offer to buyers and sellers. What I love most about the Raynes Park and West Wimbledon area is the overwhelming sense of community. We’re already heavily involved in lots of upcoming local events and we are working with local schools. Our clients are really supportive of what we are trying to achieve in the area. In the new office, we have already created a following of local residents who have got behind the Aspire brand. As I write this, the word ‘Brexit’ or ‘Bremain’ is on the tip of everyone’s tongues. With any large political event, we tend to notice the market slowing down. Luckily, our offices are based in largely transient areas, so the market is ongoing. In recent years we have seen an increase in sellers looking to move to more affordable areas away from prime central London. Areas such as Raynes Park and West Wimbledon have greatly benefited from this, largely because of how commutable the area is. In the long term, Crossrail 2 is obviously the hot topic on everyone’s lips, and whilst there is obvious concern surrounding the actual building process in the area, I think the general perception is that everyone recognises it will be a huge benefit for this part of London.

How long have you been in this area? I came to Featherstone Leigh Battersea as a sales negotiator ten years ago, progressing through the company to be appointed Lettings Director. What is your ethos? Our local knowledge is second to none. We hope to give the best service possible by giving our customers practical, honest and friendly advice. What are your favourite properties right now? Victorian properties have always been my preferred property, and luckily there’s an abundance of them here! I particularly like Victorian conversions with contemporary interiors. Market predictions for the coming months? After the EU referendum, I anticipate both lettings and sales markets in Battersea picking up considerably and confidence in the market returning to full strength by Autumn. u

Q&A WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT RECENTLY ABOUT THE LOCAL MARKET?
There has been no shortage of press as to how the central London housing markets has 'cooled', especially at the upper end. Agents have reported a more price sensitive market overall this year, however we are still seeing some very good prices being achieved. WHERE ARE YOU SEEING THE HIGHEST PRICE RISES AT THE MOMENT?

houses set up for family living, this property bucked that trend but the work was done fantastically well. It is therefore a great case study when demonstrating that 'best in class' properties will always be in high demand. u
Robert French
As an overall comment prices are not increasing generally, however where buyers perceive a property to 'tick all the boxes', we have seen competitive bidding. Equally, properties that require modernisation or have the scope to extend have achieved some very good results. WHERE SHOULD I INVEST?
I have always been a big fan of ex local authority building in the most central location as possible. If capital appreciation is the medium to long term goal then, in SW11 around Battersea Park would be my bet. u

NOTTING HILL FILM FLAT
t is easy to forget how successful the 1999 romantic comedy Notting Hill was. After its release fans would flock to see the bookshop on which Hugh Grant’s fictional outlet in the film was based, and an auction to sell the blue door made newspaper headlines. The film cemented Grant’s reputation as a movie star and centred on his character’s on-off relationship between famous actress Anna (Julia Roberts) after she walks into his independent bookshop. Richard Curtis penned the story after visiting The Notting Hill Bookshop in, just off Portobello Road. The apartment’s owner Sarah Anderson is moving out after living above the shop for 35 years – she sold the business in the 1990s before the film was made, but continued to run it for the new owners until 2005. It’s on the market for £1.495m. Marsh & Parsons 0207 313 2890; marshandparsons.co.uk

HOMES with HISTORY London developments with a story
A
s you travel around London it can feel like every street is being redeveloped from huge towers of gleaming glass to smaller, more boutique affairs. And you’d be right. The capital is the scene of a significant building boom at the moment as developers race to keep up with demand. Last year a significant amount of new bricks and mortar were squeezed into the city, with some 25,000 new homes built. But all is not as new as it seems. Underneath the builders’ dust, there is plenty of London’s history peeking out. You may think you’re buying a swish new pad, but it could be where Kings frolicked, power stations belched, Roman centurions bathed or TV programmes recorded. With at least 2,000 years of a turbulent, colourful and rich history below and around us, who knows? Here are some of the developments for sale at the moment where such history can be found.

operations in 1983. It then stood empty and increasingly derelict until 2012 when a viable scheme to redevelop it was finally launched with Malaysian backing. The work continues today and parts of the residential complex are slowly being released for sale. The most recent includes The Power Station where prices start at £1.975 million for a two bedroom apartment, including several which will sit within the original fabric of the building and include exposed brickwork and industrial fittings.
