ctober: what is there to look forward in this very much middling month? Well, for one thing, it is a great time to embrace change: be it new autumn trends (the 90s are out and the 70s are in), a new food season (hello, pumpkins and game) or new opportunities (discovering a new app, jetting off somewhere glamorous, redecorating your house), whatever they might be. I, for one, believe October has plenty to get you excited. While it's sad to wave goodbye to the warmth of summer, with said farewell brings a time of year that is synonymous with log fires, cool nights and, most excitingly, cosy fashions. Explore our fashion pages and look forward to covering up, on page 30. We sit down with rising West London star, Bel Powley in the wake of her recent film release, Diary of a Teenage Girl. BOROUGHLY LOVE This October, the borough of Richmond Upon Thames hosts its first ever Music & Drama festival Wo r d s J e n n i f e r C o o k

O

ctober tends to be a transitional month. The hazy days of summer are fading and we’re settling in for a predictably chilly autumn. It’s also only a month or two until the Christmas festivities commence. However, those worried that October is going to prove a real drag, fear not - the Richmond upon Thames Music and Drama Festival is here to inject a little colour and life into your month. The first of what looks likely to become an annual event, this festival also coincides with the Rugby World Cup, which is hosted down the road in Twickenham. The festival takes place over a three-week period, inviting talented performers from Richmond and beyond to the forefront to liven up even

the dreariest of Octobers. With over 80 different events taking place across 34 venues, there is something for everyone: from choral evenings to rock concerts; Shakespearean tragedies to improvised comedies; and amateur and professional theatre performances to interpretive dance. What’s more is that it’s all designed to encourage community spirit and creativity in adults and kids alike. The packed event schedule also boasts a handful of ‘special events’, in other words, festival must-sees that really get to the heart of what these three weeks are about: community spirit. Even if you don’t commit whole days to creative activity (although it’ll be difficult not to), be sure to make it to at least one of these highlighted, family-orientated happenings.

Festival patron and Four Weddings and a Funeral star John Hannah agrees: “It is wonderful to see such talent being given a platform in Richmond.” So, grab your dancing shoes, warm up those vocal chords, and get ready to feel the boroughly love as London prepares to show the world that, for Richmond upon Thames, rugby is just the beginning. ◆

F rom Holland Park to

HOLLYWOOD She may have starred in only a handful of films so far but London-born actress Bel Powley is just getting started Wo r d s a b s o l u t e ly

“P

eople always assume that when you’ve broken out, it’s just instantly happened. But I’ve been doing this for 10 years. I’ve been acting since I was 13. It’s been baby steps, it wasn't like I did Benidorm and then suddenly, ‘Welcome to Hollywood’,” says Bel Powley, with a smile. Of course it’s an easy mistake to make; with her unpolished, lowmaintenance style and those giant, blue eyes Powley gives the impression of being barely out of drama school. It is this combination of naivety and a growing awareness of power that made Powley perfect for the role of Minnie Goetze in indie drama The Diary of a Teenage Girl. Set in 1970s San Francisco and based on Phoebe Gloeckner’s graphic novel, The Diary of a Teenage Girl: An Account in Words and Pictures, the film follows the 15-year-old protagonist as she explores the awakening of her sexuality. Directed by Marielle Heller, who played Minnie herself in the stage adaptation,

the subject matter is handled in a straightforward manner and is by no means salacious. It has also been highly praised for its style, hues of Seventies yellows and browns, with cartoon animation flourishes, to add just the right amount quirk. The film is daring for several reasons: female, adolescent sex is still somewhat taboo, coupled with the fact that Minnie loses her virginity to her mother’s 35-year-old boyfriend, played to perfection by Alexander Skarsgaard. Critics have accused the film of being blasé on the subject of abuse, but Powley disagrees: “I think it's a testament to the

writing that, when I first read the script, jumped out to me. I didn’t just see a girl sleeping with an older man; it’s so much more about a girl coming of age, coming into herself, learning to love herself. Their relationship is just one of the relationships for me.” The now 23-yearold goes on to say: “I guess I was nervous because I didn’t want people to use the ‘p’ word [puberty], and we’ve been really lucky: how we wanted to present the film is how it’s being perceived.” Far from being the victim, Minnie is utterly complicit in her carnal adventures − if anything, the sympathy is for the adults who seem incapable of engaging in mature relationships. So, how exactly did this young woman from West London end up taking Hollywood by storm in only her second feature film? Born in Shepherd’s Bush to an actor father and casting director mother, Powley is quick to crush assumptions that this has given her an unfair advantage, insisting her parents were ‘horrified’ by her decision and “wanted me and my sister to do anything but act… law, medicine, something

ARTS & CULTURE / INTERVIEW sensible.” Her interest in theatre began in her early teens when she participated in a Saturday drama group called Young Blood Theatre Company, with fellow Holland Park school friends. It was here she was discovered by a casting director and chosen to play Daisy Miller in CBBC series M.I High. But it wasn’t until she landed the role of Maggie in Tusk Tusk at London’s Royal Court Theatre that a career in acting seemed like a serious option. “My dad’s an actor, my mother’s a casting director, it very much unglamorised acting for me when I was growing up. It was my parents’ job. I wasn't really that interested in it to be honest, and having that has always made me keep my feet firmly on the ground.” Her big screen debut was as a young Princess Margaret in A Royal Night Out, a fictional account of VE Day when Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret were allowed to join the celebratory crowds; another film that caused controversy, thanks to rumours that Her Majesty was not pleased about the portrayal. Powley, though, would like to think that Queen Elizabeth has seen the film saying, “At the end of the day, if you’re playing a character based on someone from real life, there has to be a liberty for the actor to leave reality and enter fantasy to create the character. So, hopefully she’ll understand it’s not based on hard fact. But they did join in the crowds on VE Day and enjoy the celebrations. It’s not too far from reality I’d imagine. I’d like to think they had the chance to let their hair down and party.” With The Diary of a Teenage Girl already the toast of this year’s Sundance Festival and with rumours of Academy Award nominations, Powley has been favourably compared to fellow Londoner Carey Mulligan, who similarly rose to fame overnight playing an innocent teen in 2009’s An Education. Despite the hype, the saucer-eyed starlet is determined to remain levelheaded, insisting that, “Of course it’s exciting, but as exciting as it is, as lovely as praise is to receive, I can’t lose sight of myself. I can’t get blindsided by such wonderful praise. I have to keep working hard. I haven’t got to the top yet, I’ve still got a very long way to go. I still have to graft.” Bel Powley is definitely a woman who likes to speak her mind; when The Diary of a Teenage Girl was rated 18 in the UK, she suggested young teens ought to get a fake ID to see it, telling The Evening Standard, “Female sexuality and teenage

I have to keep working hard

girls isn’t something we want to talk about in movies, in books or even in life. It’s a taboo subject and having been a teenage girl myself, it’s quite damaging. It makes you feel ostracised, like a freak for having sexual feelings.” Whilst she certainly looks the part of a teenager, Powley admits it was harder getting back into the mind-set of a young woman: “I definitely had to do a lot of work in really tapping into what it felt like to be a 15 year-old girl, because now that I’m an adult, I think in such a different way. When you’re a teenager, everything is so extreme. You’re existing

19 CHIS_Oct15_Bel Powley2.indd 19

with so many emotions at one time. It’s so much more on the surface, but now I’m an adult, I can be rational and not so nuts, basically.” Since Diary of a Teenage Girl’s screening at Sundance, offers have been pouring in. She recently finished shooting sci-fi drama Equals in Tokyo, which also stars Kirsten Stewart, and is due to work on two more films this year: A Storm in the Stars and Ashes in the Snow, a story about a young Lithuanian woman who is sent to one of Stalin’s concentration camps. “It's a true story, I actually just went to Lithuania to meet the woman my character is based on. It was incredible and harrowing and fascinating.” Despite Hollywood calling, there is clearly no place like home, as Powley insists she wants to remain in the capital, having just moved into a new apartment in West London. “I will always be based in London: I love LA and I go there a lot, I could spend six months in LA but I love to know that I can come home after all that.” u Diary of a Teenage Girl, directed by Marielle Heller is in cinemas now. myvue.com

ARTS & CULTURE / ART the Groucho was founded, though, this wasn’t the case. More often than not, exclusive clubs were decorated with dreary paintings of animals or portraits of their rubicund, claret-soaked members. Rather than catch your attention and provoke a conversation, this was art designed to soothe or even deflect the eye. In other words, it was dross. To begin with, it was a similar story at the Groucho. When Carter joined the club as a waitress in 1989, there were a few underwhelming bits and bobs on the walls: ‘A wife of one of the members might have done a Cornish landscape or something,’ she recalls. But there was nothing memorable from the realm of contemporary art. Then the club’s inaugural manager, Liam Carson, discovered that Carter was studying art at Goldsmiths College and asked her if she had any friends who would be willing to show work in the Groucho. Carter now receives emails every week from artists beseeching her to consider their work for the club’s collection. (Each year she usually acquires around ten works of art on behalf of the Groucho.) But in those

21 CHIS_OCT15_GROUCHO.indd 21

THE GODFATHER

of Pop Art, Peter Blake,

HAS GIVEN EIGHT PRINTS early, more informal days, she didn’t have such luck. Artists were suspicious of giving work to the Groucho — or to any members’ club. They suspected that the mediocrity of what else was on display would diminish their work by association. They worried that drunks carousing late into the night would damage their creations. Yet gradually she persuaded a few of her contemporaries to donate something. Angus Fairhurst’s screenprint When I Woke Up in the Morning the Feeling Was Still There (1992) was the first artwork that Carter acquired for the collection. It was followed soon

icasso as a young man had the quatre gats beer hall in Barcelona. Modernists in turn-of-the century Paris frequented the Lapin Agile cabaret in Montmartre. AbstractExpressionist barflies duked it out in the Cedar Tavern in Greenwich Village. But for British artists of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the hangout of choice was, and remains, the Groucho Club in Soho. Artists need places to congregate. Too much time in solitary studios can send them stir crazy. And since its inception in the 80s, when Francis Bacon was tempted through the door with oysters and champagne, the Groucho Club has provided a haven where artists can unwind and exchange ideas. Indeed, during the 90s, the club seemed like the only refuge in town for artists who belonged to the generation now known — slightly absurdly, given the length of time that has elapsed since they first emerged — as the YBAs. The Groucho was the setting for scores of infamous art world stories, often involving the most prominent YBA of all: Damien Hirst. Whether or not these tales were factually accurate was immaterial, because they suggested an essential truth: during the heyday of ‘Cool Britannia’, British art and the Groucho were enmeshed like the double helix of DNA. All this is well known. What is less familiar is the reason why so many British artists have gravitated towards the Groucho in recent decades. And that has less to do with the old schtick about the club’s reputation for hell-raising debauchery, and more with what artists actually encounter when they enter the premises. I’m talking about the objects hanging on the walls that they can look at with their own eyes — the art. Over the past 25 years, Nicky Carter, the club’s longest-serving member of staff, has quietly but insistently built up an important collection of contemporary British art. Without parting with a penny of the club’s money, Carter has persuaded an impressive array of artists to donate artworks to the Groucho in exchange for membership. The collection now boasts approximately 120 works of art in a range of media: mostly paintings, but also dozens of prints, photographs and sculptures. Today it is commonplace to encounter contemporary art in smart restaurants and private members’ clubs. Back when

afterwards by a spin painting that Hirst agreed to loan to the club. And as people became increasingly aware of this group of young artists, who were unafraid of self-promotion, so it became easier to talk others into giving work to the Groucho too. Twenty-five years on from those tentative first steps, Carter has amassed something remarkable: a record of the variety, depth and exuberance of the past quarter century of contemporary British art. As she puts it: ‘I want to reflect what’s going on in the art world at any given time. If the collection doesn’t reflect what’s going on, then you may as well just put posters on the walls.’ More often than not, artists happy to swap art for membership will offer a shortlist of contenders from which Carter will select a single, representative piece. Since Carter is an artist herself working together with her husband Rob, it is possible to consider the club’s collection as one of ‘artists’ art’, just as we might speak of a cult novel by ‘a writers’ writer’. The breadth of the collection is arresting. The most represented artist is the octogenarian ‘godfather of Pop art’ Peter Blake, who has given eight prints. There are impressive works by other important artists from the same generation including Gerald Laing and David Whitaker, who was the first British

artist to have a solo exhibition at the newly opened Serpentine Gallery in 1970. And of course the YBAs themselves are visible on the walls of the Groucho in full force: as well as works by Fairhurst and Hirst, members encounter art by Mat Collishaw, Tracey Emin, Marc Quinn and Gavin Turk, to name only a handful. As time has passed, Carter has ensured that the club’s growing collection has benefited from new blood too. Yes, there are established names — such as the American conceptual artist Joseph Kosuth or Martin Creed and Keith Tyson, who have both won the Turner Prize. But Carter has also enticed younger artists with burgeoning reputations: the likes of Conrad Shawcross and Polly Morgan, as well as Idris Khan and Annie Morris, who have promised to give work to the club. Conscious that the collection began while she was still a student herself, Carter spends time each year doing the rounds of the graduate shows, eager to spot fresh talent. Variety, then, is an important quality of the Groucho Club art collection. It is almost impossible to categorise, other than by making the obvious observation that it consists of British art, with a bias towards artists living and working in

23 CHIS_OCT15_GROUCHO.indd 23

London, from the past 25 years. ‘I wouldn’t hang everything at home,’ Carter says, ‘but I do like all of it, and I try to appeal to lots of different tastes.’ Moreover, almost none of the art feels bland. Most of it is vibrant, dynamic, sometimes upbeat, often snappy – the visual equivalent of drinking one of the club’s Espresso Martinis. Just as each work originally elicited a ‘gut reaction’ within Carter, which is why she acquired it, so it is likely to stimulate one within you. Carter has overheard members debating the merits of the art on many occasions. They are not always complimentary. Sometimes there are even complaints. Still, complaints are better than bland indifference — and certainly more in keeping with the strong-willed spirit of the club. ‘If you’re provoking a reaction, that’s great,’ Carter says. ◆

AN EASY LIFE?

 blow LTD

A sceptical millennial trials London’s leading concierge apps to see whether they live up to the hype Wo r d s E L I Z A B E T H H U T T O N

There are so many reasons why you might need blow LTD. Picture the scene: you leave the house late, get caught in the rain and your hair explodes into a ball of frizz, all before a date. In these desperate times, blow become your very own fairy godmother, providing you with fast beauty ondemand and to-go. With thousands of professional beauticians prepped and ready, they will travel to wherever you are whenever you need them. Fast working – blow dries take just 30 minutes, make-up, 20, and nails, 15 – you can have an entire makeover performed in a lunchtime, which is exactly what I did one Friday afternoon. Behind the concept is ex-ELLE editor-in-chief and launching editor of Grazia, Fiona McIntosh, who managed the £16m glossy mag project while also raising two young children. Understanding the need for reliably quick, hassle-free beauty, she is now the co-founder and creative director of blow LTD, all while working as the editorial and online consultant to the publishing house Mondadori. You know what they say: Give a girl the right blow dry and she can take over the world. blowltd.com FOOD

 Deliveroo

“D

id you know there’s an app for that?” My friend tells me as I get up to go and conquer the mountain of washing I’ve ignored all weekend. To my amazement, he’s right, there is an app for that. In fact, there’s pretty much an app for everything these days. From beauty and food to cleaners and personal trainers, the app-savvy millennial can get things to come to them, rather than the other way around. I am, however, sceptical. Is it really any quicker, or easier, to get someone to do things for me? I trialled the latest on-demand concierge apps to find out…

25 Chis_Oct15_App Feature.indd 25

Although we don’t like to admit it, sometimes we just want take out. On days like this, Deliveroo is a complete game-changer. Bringing decent restaurant food to you in average of 32 minutes, this app allows you to order-in while on the go. The concept isn’t ground-breaking, but Deliveroo’s USP makes it stand-out from some very fierce app-competition. You see, this delivery company don’t just lump together all the local takeaway joints, instead they pull in many of London’s much-loved restaurants who don’t usually deliver. While ordering in central London means you can eat a burger from MEATliquor at your desk, the range of local restaurants delivering to zone 3-6 are increasingly impressive, with the likes of Gourmet Burger Kitchen and Gaucho among the ever-growing list. Not only is the app streamlined to perfection, but its timings are pretty accurate too – ideal for those of us who are not only time poor but terrible in the kitchen too. deliveroo.co.uk

XXXXXX / XXXXXXX CLEANING

 Bizzby

From last-minute childminders to emergency locksmiths, Bizzby do it all, fast. Catering to what CEO Rohan Sinclair Luvaglio calls the “now-generation”, each order is made on-demand so that any available, Bizzby-approved professional can be sent to you ASAP. Working much like Uber, Bizzby uses your GPS signal to find your location, scan the local area, and find a fully vetted professional working within a certain radius. As a result, days spent waiting, and then paying a premium for, oncall electricians and plumbers are a thing of the past; now your problem can be solved in just three taps of an iPhone. While all of the services offered are useful from time to time (thanks to the handyman, Ikea construction horror stories need be no more) the real lifesaver for me has been the cleaner. Selecting from a dropdown list, you simply input the type of place needed cleaning, whether that be a house, flat, room or office, and take a picture of the mess. Ideal for everyday tasks, as well as the more advanced cleanups, Bizzby matches the cleaner to your order so that all you need is a hoover, mop and bucket. The lovely Kelsey arrived in just under an hour and was both friendly and efficient – she managed to clean my entire flat (post-party) in just three hours. My advice would be to stop trawling endlessly through Yelp; it’s no longer relevant, Bizzby has arrived. bizzby.com

 TruBe

So, you think you’re too busy to workout? With TruBe, you no longer have that excuse. Offering professional personal trainers at a time and place to suit you, this app removes the barriers that get in the way of exercise. Putting you in control of the PT, TruBe is ideal for time-pressed professionals, busy parents and frequent visitors to the city. Each session is completely customisable, from the intensity level to the style, which includes everything from HIIT and boxing, to yoga and ballet barre. Booking the session though the app was really easy; my HIIT class, on the other hand, was not. Having chosen to workout in my local park, my PT Alex arrived fully equipped with sandbells, resistance bands, mat and rope ladder. With boundless energy and relentless motivation, Alex kept me working hard throughout the hour so I left completely exhausted – it turns out, he had won the ICO light welterweight World Kickboxing Championship in 2013, which makes sense in retrospect. While the service doesn’t let you request the same trainer twice – the service works on the basis of efficiency so anyone who is available and suited to your needs will be booked on the job – you can rest assured that TruBe trainers have all received signature coaching to ensure a first-rate experience every single time. trubeapp.com

 Laundrapp

I hate laundry, you hate laundry, don’t we all hate laundry? That’s why you need to download Laundrapp right now. Taking on one of the most irritating chores, this app puts door-to-door laundry and dry cleaning at your fingertips. Partnering with long-established, well-respected companies who already service 5 star hotels and restaurants, Laundrapp are reviving the launderette by making it on-demand and current to Generation Y. Offering clients the opportunity to be in control of the little details, such as the hour your items will be collected and returned, it makes the laundering process painlessly quick and easy. Admittedly, sending your clothes off to someone new is unnerving, but you needn’t worry; these guys know what they’re doing. From the slick, intuitive, user-friendly app to the service itself, everything went according to plan for me: the courier came and collected the 8kg bag of washing when the app said he would and it was returned just 48hrs later, washed, ironed, hung and folded. Having successfully done my laundry without shrinking, dying or losing anything, I can confidently say that this app will change your life. laundrapp.com

utumn’s transeasonal dressing almost demands ‘borrowed from the boys’ pieces and a slightly masculine aesthetic. Who better, then, to turn to than Korean-born Eudon Choi. Since 2009 the newgen designer has been lending his training in menswear to women’s ready-to-wear, producing irresistible apparel for his eponymous brand that has become renowned for its outerwear. In other words, Choi’s just the man for October’s erratic weather dressing conundrums. The Royal College of Art graduate has become a reliable source of style inspiration, with his uncanny ability to predict trends several seasons before they become ‘It’ looks: take, for example, his AW14 collection, which pre-empted the very ‘now’ long layers and primary colours, or SS15’s tailored take on of-the-moment Victoriana inspired designs. And who could forget Choi's iconic AW13 line, which saw babushka doll-like styles apprehend today’s revamps on traditional folkwear. As the WGSN Global Fashion Award winner unveils his latest offering at London Fashion Week, all eyes are on Choi's garments that are literally changing the shape of fashion. AW15 was filled with silk suits and intarsia knits in 70s silhouettes. But what will SS16 hold? With Choi, you can never predict. Though a collection saturated with innovation is one thing that can be counted on. EUDON CHOI eudonchoi.com

It’s not often that I fall in love with every piece of a designer’s new collection. But with relative newcomer Huishan Zhang it was hard not to. While endlessly compared to Giambattista Valli, Huishan has a somewhat softer feel to his collections and you cannot fail to detect the Dior Couture training following his year with the design team in Paris. A sweet soul with a very bright future, Moda Operandi is the latest retailer to take Huishan under its wing, a sure sign of even greater things to come. ◆  modaoperandi.com

Alex Eagle’s debut concept store on Walton Street has mastered that tricky middle-ground of placing itself in the ‘hip store’ category, while managing not to alienate the more traditional SW1 shopper. As light as air, the glasses are all hand painted with exquisitely toned rims. ◆  alexeagle.co.uk

Leopard, tassels and vibrant tones spring to mind when thinking of shoe brand Aquazzura, a label brought into the realms of cult status by sparky Colombian Edgardo Osorio. Known for boldly capping distribution of his shoes, the London wait list is thankfully eased a little with the opening of Aquazzura’s stand alone store on Mount Street this October; mirroring Edgardo’s Florence flagship, the sleek interior holds his most sought after creations, along with a bespoke service. ◆  aquazzura.com

From parkas to peas and macs to duffles – the options are endless. Right now, however, it’s all about oversized outer layers. The biggest trend this Autumn Winter ’15 is for billowing double-breasted overcoats with a distinct 80s power dressing vibe. The season’s best can be found at Paul Smith, Korean label Wooyoungmi and British brand Burberry Prorsum. Wear yours with a fitted crew neck, tapered trousers and some derbies, or throw it over a suit for a Patrick Bateman inspired look (just be sure to forgo the axe).

Paul Smith’s runway collections are consistently directional and invariably desirable. The key piece from this season’s show was this drapey, over-sized double breasted overcoat. 

Burberry Prorsum’s overcoat’s for AW15 are all about texture and autumnal shades. While the shearling coats might be a bit much for everyday wear, this double-breasted ochre piece is bold, but well cut for everyday wear. 

Wooyoungmi is well known for its minimalist-meetssports luxe menswear. This oversized coat is a case in point. The brand’s tracksuitcome-suit trousers are also worth a look. 

Massimo Alba’s way with fabrics is second to none. This soft handled, densely-textured alpaca overcoat is my pick from this season’s collection. It costs a little more than the others, but the difference is tangiable (literally). 

love the freedom of abandoning the complexities of my make-up bag in late summer. Brushes and palettes are replaced with cream formulas that can be applied with fingers. It's time to shift my focus onto daytime skincare, seeking out multi-purpose products that moisturise and protect. Sarah Chapman’s Skinesis SPF 30 is the best high factor sun screen with added benefits I’ve found. It gives a sheen and tint to the skin and, though it doesn’t disguise imperfections, it improves the overall tone of the skin. I try to wear SPF 50 when on holiday, particularly on breezy beaches. This summer I will be taking Paula’s Choice Mattifying Fluid with me. It’s the only SPF 50 that doesn’t make me sweat.

For the evening, I love to add a little luminiser to my cheekbones and collarbone for a healthy, preppy feel (a look perfectly executed on the Calvin Klein Spring Summer catwalk). The RMS Luminizer fits in the tiniest handbag and delivers a sheer yet distinctive glow. Charlotte Tilbury’s beach stick dabbed onto cheeks and blended with fingers gives a hint of tan without the damage. Pop it on your lips for a chic, sheer lip. Finish by subtly filling in your brows with Blink’s handy travel size pencil - it will make you look instantly groomed. Finally, a cooling mask at night replenishes my skin. I tend to choose one that has a mild toning effect like this Fresh Rose Face Mask. ◆

‘I WILL NEVER BUY SHOES ANYWHERE ELSE AGAIN’ Recruitment manager Andrea Mahn had so much foot pain she could barely walk.

T

his fit and active 40-yearold had been suffering from Plantar Fasciitis – a painful inflammation of the tissue on the sole of the foot. “I was treated by an osteopath, a physiotherapist and a sports therapist but nothing really eased the pain,” explained Andrea. As her job involves a lot of standing and walking, life was becoming unbearable. She was also unable to partake in her favourite hobby, running. Then Andrea saw an advert for Foot Solutions and decided to pay them a visit.

“I turned up hoping that someone would be able to help me,” she said, “and it was the best decision I have ever made. “The staff were knowledgeable, helpful and attentive and after half an hour of tests and examinations they found a solution. It was the most fantastic service I could have imagined.” Foot Solutions provided Andrea with custom shoe inserts and a special device to help stretch her feet at night. “The device gave me immediate relief from the pain, allowing me to sleep better and when the inserts were fitted in my shoes they made a huge difference. I had faced the prospect of never being able to wear high heels – but I can now wear them for up to 14 hours if necessary. “I don’t suffer at all anymore. I can do my job and go running without constant pain. I will never buy shoes anywhere else again.” ◆

THE FLIPSIDE OF SPF

SUN CARE If you love the sun, protect the skin you’re in

T

By T R E VO R B I S H O P

he temptation to soak up the sun whenever you can is huge – especially if you live in the UK, with its temperamental climate. We’re often very blasé about protection, too and it’s interesting the lengths we go to just to avoid a cold and without ever thinking about the possibility of skin cancer. Luckily, Dr Bela, the in-house Consultant Dermatologist at MediSpa, is here to help.

HOW TO PREVENT SKIN CANCER

As with all illness, prevention is better than cure. Avoiding the sun would be one way though it’s not very practical so the

next best thing is to cover up with sun screen and appropriate clothing. The sun can cause melanoma, skin cancer formation and aging. There are two types of harmful ultraviolet rays: ultraviolet A (long-wave) and ultraviolet B (shortwave) rays and the correct type and use of sunscreen is so important in our defence. UVB are the rays that cause damage to the epidermis (skin surface) while UVA penetrates beyond the epidermis into the dermis.

WHAT DOES SPF MEAN?

The ideal sunscreen would be a waterproof, broad-spectrum (protecting you from UVA & UVB) high SPF factor sunscreen. In order to be called a broad-spectrum sun-screen, it will have

57 NH_SEP15_The_Park_Club_Adv.indd 57

Any form of sunscreen is potentially bad for you if used or applied incorrectly or in insufficient quantity as it offers the false belief that we are safe. For this reason Dr Bela offers a guide for us all to follow: • Choose the product very carefully; don’t choose based on price, brand or bottle-size. Check the ingredient list; it should contain zinc-oxide or titaniumoxide or both. • Ideally, apply sunscreen twice in the morning to cool, dry skin, waiting at least 30 minutes between applications and at least 30 minutes prior to going outside. • Sunscreen is always the last step before foundation make up, but applied after a barrier repair skin care product since sunscreen ingredients bind to the stratum corneum. This binding is prevented if one is already perspiring. • Wearing make-up with SPF does not provide adequate coverage, but it does, nonetheless, provide an extra layer of protection. • All colours and types of skin should be using sunscreen.

ENJOY PEACE OF MIND AND BOOK A MOLE CHECK

If you’re reading this article and the sun isn’t shining, please, please, please avoid sun-beds. The World Health Organization considers UVA & UVB to be as carcinogenic as tobacco smoke. When using a sun-bed, you are exposing yourself to approximately four times the amount of UVA and two times the amount of UVB as you are during a similar period in the sun. Finally, If you have any doubts or suspicions or just want peace of mind, book a mole check with consultant dermatologist and mole expert, Dr Bela. Dr Bela is based at The Park Club MediSpa, East Acton Lane, London W3 7HB. The MediSpa is open to members and non-members. QUOTE “ABSOLUTELY – PEACE OF MIND” and pay just £49. Terms apply.

SEARED SCALLOPS

iving scallops a quick sea in the pan really brings out their sweetness, so a Blanc de Blancs fizz could work wonders, but perhaps a more interesting alternative is South Africa’s flagship white grape, Chenin Blanc. This is made by one of the most successful Chenin producers, with its fresh-but-rich stone fruit flavours acting as the perfect foil to the scallop’s sweet meat. u

LANCASHIRE HOTPOT

he wholesome meaty flavour of hotpot likes nothing more than a red Bordeaux blend as a wine match. This Tuscan version fits the bill perfectly with its intense dark cherry fruit and smooth tannins. However, the key to this match is its brightness of fruit (to lift the meaty hotpot) which comes courtesy of its Tuscan coast location. Made with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Alicante Bouschet grapes. u

APPLE CRUMBLE

he juiciness of apples and creaminess of custard has a lovely affinity with the pungent grape Gewurztraminer, and all the more so when there’s cinnamon spice added to the dessert. This one from Alsace has luscious – but only slightly sweet – honeyed fruit with a tingling spice that revives the palate and picks up on the subtle spicing of the dessert while its generous velvety texture glides over the apple filling brilliantly. u

Each restaurant has been meticulously finished to represent the high quality fare they serve. Not only are the interiors varied, through the use of classic decor, bright colours or more contemporary touches, they each cleverly set the scene for the night ahead. Alongside smart interiors, each restaurant chosen serves some of the best cuisine in the area, from Mexican to French and everything in between. or anyone who thought vegetarian restaurants lacked style, The Gate restaurant in Hammersmith is sure to prove you wrong. Admittedly it’s simply styled, but less is more. The tables and seats are nothing to write home about, but the modern wall along the back of the restaurant takes it from ordinary, to unique. Colourful wooden blocks are layered and literally add depth to your dining experience. Food-wise, you can’t go wrong. Started back in 1989 by Adrian and Michael Daniel, the restaurant showcases innovative techniques and flavours from their Indo-Iraqi Jewish ancestry. ◆ thegaterestaurants.com F

ubs in London are ten a penny, but it’s not often you find one that satisfies both the local clientele and the many food snobs who travel far and wide to eat here. The Princess Victoria on Uxbridge Road is an unlikely exception to the rule. Granted it’s situated in up ‘n’ coming Shepherd’s Bush, but on first entering it could be mistaken for a well-heeled watering hole. It’s not until you pass the locals propped up at the bar and head through to the striking dining room (it’s all heavy chandeliers and dark wood) at the back that you get an idea of what’s to come. The food is unreal, well executed and brilliantly British. But it’s the vast wine list that seals the deal. ◆ princessvictoria.co.uk P

XXXXXX FOOD & DRINK / XXXXXXX / ROUND UP MOOT BAR C hiswic k High Road , Chis w ic k

K, it may be set within Chiswick Park business complex, but Moot Bar is our favourite bar in west London to grab a relaxed beverage or two. With a mix of on-trend metal chairs, stripped back rustic wooden tables, reclaimed scaffolding boards on the walls and a bar made from restored doors, as well as a large outdoor terrace for (occasional) sunny days, Moot Bar is kitted out to perfection. If you’re feeling peckish, order something small and cheap from the fresh deli or a bigger plate from the kitchen out back. Alternatively, stick to liquids and indulge in their impressive selection of beers. ◆ mootbar.co.uk

SMOKE HOUSE S u tton Lane North , Chis w ic k

eil Rankin’s first west London endeavour, the Smokehouse in Chiswick is pulling in punters from far and wide. The second Smokehouse from Rankin, with the first being in Islington, this one occupies a former local pub and draws in a different crowd to it’s north London equivalent. Rankin does what he does best: British grub with proper seasonal twists, winning over the local clientele. The interior is quite something: N

mounted antlers hang from walls, chalk boards with figures of cows hang high, while open fires keep diners warm, fur throws sit on old church pews and candles cast an atmospheric glow. This is probably one of the best locals a food fanatic could wish for. ◆ smokehousechiswick.co.uk

n a slightly different fashion, Betty Blythe in Brook Green is a vintage tearoom and makes for quite the day out. A short walk from Shepherd’s Bush or Hammersmith tube stations, Betty Blythe is a regular haunt for hen parties, baby showers or birthday teas. The tearoom is quintessentially 1920s, with fancy dress and photographs from the era on display, and delicious homemade baked goods piled up to tempt you in. Looking for something different? We recommend booking the Glamorous Great Gatsby Afternoon Tea, which comes with a selection of cocktails. ◆ bettyblythe.co.uk I

TACOS & TEQUILA An authentic taste of Mexico By h a n n a h sa r g e a n t

exican restaurants are hardly scarce in London. My guess would be that it’s a tough challenge to open a Mexican restaurant that stands out from the crowds of competition, but Habanera have done just that. Run by self-confessed passionate foodies as well as the brains behind the Hummingbird Bakery, Habanera boasts a kitchen team comprising of (mostly) Mexicans with a solid understanding of their homeland cuisine and a 2015 Mexican Restaurant of the Year award. Habanera was everything you’d expect from a Mexican restaurant: colourfully decorated furniture, a wooden bar with a rustic finish. But what really brought together Mexico’s sociable food spirit, was the shareable gourmet tacos served as racks of three. It’s impossible not to chat over such an arrangement. Recommended tacos are the ‘BBQ Beef’ with crispy onions and house made BBQ sauce, the ‘Three Little Pigs’ comprising of pulled pork, chorizo and bacon and the Coconut Prawn with pineapple chipotle sauce on a jicama (Mexican yam) tortilla. Accompanied by deliciously creamy Mexican beans and juicy chilli and lime sweetcorn, all taco racks were perfectly complimented by the Watermelon and Pink Peppercorn Margarita, classic Mojitos and the ‘Habanera Old Fashioned’ – a zingy number made up of Bourbon, orange, chilli and cigar bitters. By the end of our visit, Habanera had successfully pulled off an authentic Mexican feast for two. Topped off with a plate of caramelised plantain slices with salt caramel ice cream and Churros, we left fully satisfied and itching to return. u habanera.co.uk M

DIM SUM FUN Absolutely’s favourite high end Chinese restaurant heads to the City W o r d s R O M Y VA N D E N B R O E K E Yauatcha C i t y, ec2m

utside the realms of China Town, my prefered Chinese restaurant has long been Yauatcha in Soho. I actually challenge you to find better char siu buns than the ones the serve here: fluffy, sweet, porcine bites of pure heaven. Sigh. So, when I heard that renowned restaurateur Alan Yau had taken his Soho eatery to Broadway Circle in the City, I had to go. First off, the new restaurant is nicer than the Soho branch. I remember my first visit to Broadwick Street and the embarrasment of struggling to fit my 34-inch legs under the very low tables. Well, here in the city, the tables have leg room. The food sings from the same hymn sheet as its central London equivalent, serving everything from steamed dim sum to peking duck. To start, after a glass of Taittinger, O

we ordered our small plates. Out flew two portions of char siu buns, spinach balls with prawns and cuttlefish, prawn and beancurd cheung fun (a type of steamed rice noodle cannelloni) and venison puffs. Each dish was as beautiful as expected, and while we savoured the buttery venison puff and mused over the incredible char siu buns, it was actually the prawn and beancurd cheung fun that grabbed our attention. The combination of delicate rice noodle, crispy beancurd and prawn was sublime. To follow we tucked into a quarter peking duck; crispy, succulent strands of bird with a sweet plum sauce, and a portion of the spicy aubergine, sato bean, okra and french bean bowl. Excellent. Yau, you’ve got it right, again. u yauatcha.com

FOOD & DRINK / RECIPES take out from the diet the things that might be affecting you. If you have had an IgE test, great, but histamine typed foods will respond negatively the test. Histamine in foods like strawberries, tomatoes, spinach, dried fruit, vinegar etc. will cause allergic responses in the body, so if you can’t work out what it is try an elimination diet for a while, this normally is a good indicator. What you eat is crucial to rebalancing the body – one study of overweight people showed that just 1 week after starting a nutritious diet, levels of inflammation dropped. ‘The Eat Yourself Young/Cook Yourself Young’ plan is designed to soothe inflammation by boosting your intake of foods containing inflammation-dampening antioxidants called polyphenols which include cumin and omega 3 fatty acids and helping you stay off inflammatory foods such as sugar, white flour, red meat and dairy.

o, here’s the scoop: there are five ageing processes. These processes make us not only feel old but look old. The great news is that when you know which of them affects you most you can correct it easily. It is super simple, you just need to understand your body and what it is telling you. I am going to take the first of these symptoms from my book Eat Yourself Young and describe it to you, if you are suffering from this you will know by the symptoms. The process is inflammation. Inflammation is a normal process in the

body, it occurs as an immune response to allergy or injury. However, if you have a low-grade inflammation in the body this will cause not only pain and irritation, but disease and ageing. In fact scientists have coined the phrase inflammageing because of the extreme impact on the body and skin which makes you look and feel ill and old. These are the symptoms: dry skin, dandruff, itching, sneezing, headaches, restless leg syndrome, joint pain and stiffness, fine lines, frequent colds, infection, mucus, light night eating, colitis, mucus in the stools, allergies, food intolerances and hives. So how do you avoid it? First you need to

OCTOPUS SALAD High in vitamins, minerals and omegas and low in saturated fat and calories. A good dinner party starter, or eat it as your protein over a week. eople think octopus is difficult to get right but doing it this way is easy: you simply let it simmer and wait. It's worth it for the taste and it's a cheap deal, too, as an octopus feeds many people. P

Serves 10 I n g r e d i e nt s To cook the octopus • 2kg octopus • 1 large onion, chopped • 3 celery stalks, chopped • 10 thin slices of root ginger • 10g sprigs of rosemary • 10g sprigs of thyme • 10g sprigs of basil • 1 lemon grass stalk, bruised • 100ml white wine vinegar For the salad • 1/4 green pepper • 1/4 red pepper • 1/4 celery stalk • 2 spring onions

To marinate the octopus • 50ml olive oil • juice of 1 lemon Method 01 The octopus tentacles and body can be eaten, but first remove all the dirt from the suckers and clean the head. 02 Put all the ingredients to cook the octopus into a large pot of filtered water filled to the top, add the octopus and simmer for three hours. The amount of flavourings is really down to personal taste. I rather like having a strong taste, so I would put in a rather large amount of each. 03 You will find the skin of the octopus comes off easily. Cut the tentacles off and the take off the suckers and skin. Slice into pieces and marinate the octopus in the olive oil and lemon for several hours. 04 When ready to serve to octopus, slice the peppers and celery into strips and then chop at an angle to create 2.5cm slices with angled tops and bottom. Chop the spring onions. 05 Place the salad vegetables on a plate, spoon over the octopus and its marinade and serve.

Serves 4 I n g r e d i e nt s • l medium cauliflower, cut into florets • 2 tsp coconut oil • 1 onion, finely chopped • 1 small fennel bulb, roughly chopped • 2 red peppers, sliced • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 1 tsp sweet paprika • 500ml vegetable stock, ideally home-made • pinch of saffron strands • 200mg broad beans • handful of flat-leaf parsley leaves, roughly chopped • juice of 1/2 lemon Method 01 Pulse the cauliflower florets in a food processor until they resemble grains of rice. 02 Heat the oil in a large sauté or medium paella pan over a medium-low heat. Add the onion ad gently fry, adding a little water if it begins to dry out, until softened. Add the fennel and peppers and fry for two minutes, until beginning to colour. Add the garlic, paprika and tumeric and fry for a further minute, until fragrant. Stir through the cauliflower rice until combined and pour in enough stock to cover. Sprinkle over the saffron, cover and summer for five to eight minutes, or until the stock has been mostly absorbed and the cauliflower is tender. Add more stock if necessary. 03 Tip in the broad beans and cover for a further minute or two until tender. Stir in the parsley and lemon juice and serve immediately.

FLYING VISIT La Compagnie transforms New York into a viable weekend destination Wo r d s c at h e r i n e h a l e s

W

hen considering a weekend away, there are several popular options: Paris, Berlin or perhaps this time you’ll head to Prague or Amsterdam and really shake things up? But New York? The prohibitive fares and the crippling exhaustion involved in being on an aeroplane for 16 hours in a three-day period kept it off the shortlist. But that was before luxury airline La Compagnie came along. Launched in June 2014, the allbusiness-class airline initially flew only from Paris but, as of May this year, London is now in on the action. Founded by two Frenchmen, Frantz Yvelin and Peter Luethi, with a wealth of experience in aviation between them, La Compagnie’s Boeing 757-200 aircraft is configured to provide 74 plane-wide business class seats at a significantly lower price point than the same class in larger airlines. The first thing I notice when boarding after having been whisked through security at Luton – yes, unglamorous but uncrowded Luton – is how much space there is. Two flatbed seats on either side of the aisle mean that passengers barely have

to acknowledge their neighbours, while the acres of legroom would have had my 6ft 5in father weeping for joy. Suddenly, eight hours didn’t seem such an ordeal. I lay back in my incredibly comfortable seat, which had a control more complicated than most television remotes, and perused my Samsung Galaxy Pro 12” tablet for films and music. Each seat comes equipped with one of these, as well as a pair of large over ear headphones. I spent my journey sipping champagne from La Compagnie’s wine cellar, sampling the salmon from French chef Christophe Langrée’s menu, watching my tablet and sleeping. To say I got off at Newark feeling refreshed would be an overstatement but for once the flight was an integral part of the experience not a preliminary to be endured. After a quick cab ride on the New Jersey Turnpike, we emerged in Lower Manhattan and soon arrived at our hotel. The Conrad Hotel New York is located in Battery Park City, practically on the banks of the Hudson River. The Conrad is an excellent base for those looking to explore or for those in Manhattan on business as it is next to the Financial District. On arrival, it is hard not to notice the enormous artwork that

extends considerable height of the lobby, lit by atmospheric blue lighting that gives the whole area a space-age feel. A tangle of dark purple lines on a blue background, the piece is entitled ‘Loopy Doopy’ and lends its name to the hotel’s rooftop bar which, having come off the flight feeling considerably better than I thought I would, I decided to visit. I took in the stunning views out over the Hudson, while sampling one of the bar’s signature Boozy Ice Pop cocktails before retiring to my wonderfully comfortable room. I had flown in on a Friday night and I woke up in fear of my precious Saturday in the Big Apple being blighted by stiff limbs and jetlag but I felt well rested and made my way down to ATRIO, the Conrad’s sophisticated, Mediterranean-inspired restaurant for some crispy bacon and a damn fine cup of American coffee. A quick tour of the hotel revealed a combination of unfussy luxury and modern amenities, including two ballrooms and a foyer ideal for large events and stylish workspaces for those on business. The hotel manages to retain a distinct personality, however, with touches like the running theme of the ‘Loopy Doopy’ artwork and a delightful barbershop run by a New York legend named Sal. Lower Manhattan has become a vibrant and commercial neighbourhood and this is down, in part, to the opening of Brookfield Place. A gigantic glass structure filled with

towering palm trees, high-end shops and eateries and it is at one of these (Beaubourg, a lovely French restaurant) that I stopped for a small feast before continuing down to the marina. Here, I began to regret my gluttony as I took in the swaying masts before donning a lifejacket and stepping carefully down on deck. I was being treated to a sailing lesson by the North Cove Sailing School and before I knew it we were tacking across the Hudson. There really is no better way to see Manhattan’s famous landmarks: I spied Ellis Island, Governor’s Island and Brooklyn Bridge from the boat but the real highlight was getting up close and personal with the Statue of Liberty herself. Back on dry land I headed for Midtown and made my way down through Madison Square Park, past the magnificent Flatiron Building and on through the markets in Union Square, past (and sometimes into) the vintage shops and cafés of Greenwich Village, lusting after Tribeca’s lofts, before walking back along the banks of the Hudson. Still full of beans, I devoured a truly scrumptious dinner at ATRIO and then returned to Tribeca in search of cocktails. Luckily, Mark Ricci,

Hilton’s affable director of communications, had a suggestion and I was soon sipping sidecars in The Brandy Library, a delightful bar with hundreds of shelves of bottles full of amber liquid lining the walls. Sunday was spent sightseeing and if I have one tip to share it is to forgo the Empire State Building in favour of Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Centre. Not only are the queues non-existent, you actually have a far better view of the iconic Empire State Building itself (not to mention Central Park and the Chrysler Building) from its uncrowded viewing decks. After a mandatory photo op in the admittedly hellish Times Square I stopped for a light lunch under the awnings in Rockefeller Plaza and listened to a little live music. Shopping on the swanky Upper East Side (mandatory) followed by Aperol in the East Village found me still going strong. The grid system of New York’s streets makes it easy to navigate and I found I had covered a lot of ground by the time I caught my evening flight. Back at work I could not help thinking that thanks to La Compagnie the City that Never Sleeps feels that much closer to London. ◆

his small coastal town in West Dorset is as picturesque as they come. Situated on the Jurassic Coast, Lyme Regis is a seaside hub for tourists and locals alike, with great British food, community events and quintessential features, such as arcade games and countless ice cream stalls. When you’re not living it up in Hix Townhouse or eating some of the best local seafood at Mark Hix’s cliffside restaurant, Hix Oyster and Fish House, take things slow, wander along the pebbled beach and watch the waves roll into the bay. 

THE HOTEL

H

oused in a Georgian build in Lyme Regis, Hix Townhouse is a home away from home. The man behind the restaurant, Mark Hix, is one of London’s most prominent restaurateurs and is renowned for his rustic style, love of art and commitment to seasonal food. The townhouse has been divided into eight rooms, each following a different theme. The best of the bunch has to be the Hunting Suite, which is kitted out with red leather seats and wood panelled walls, on which dormant air rifles and mounted deer head’s hang. There’s no restaurant in the house, rather a small kitchen where you can help yourself to bread and butter or a cup of tea. Breakfast is part of the package, with the housekeeper delivering a large hamper crammed with locally baked goods and other treats for you to eat in the comfort of your own room. 

THE RESTAURANT

I

n housing the hotel and restaurant separately, Mark Hix manages to make food more of a feature. The Hix Oyster and Fish House is only a short five minute stroll up the hill and overlooks the Lyme Regis harbor. Weather dependent, grab an aperitif on the decking and lap up the spectacular vista of the Jurassic coast, before heading indoors for a feast of fish and foraged goods. The restaurant is informal, but that provides no reflection on the quality of the food and service. With a menu thoughtfully designed to showcase the best local produce and seafood from the area, and a wine list edited down to perfection, it's a simple reminder as to why Mark Hix has got to where he is today. Oh and if you’re lucky, the catch of the day will be a lobster that was only caught a couple of hours before Ω you can’t get fresher than that. 

e are standing in a room filled with beautiful objects, some in glass cabinets, some on display tables, others depicted in photographs hanging on the walls. Knives and forks with fantastical twisted handles and thin stemmed champagne flutes crafted from gleaming silver are positioned strategically around the room. Still, I remain fixated on an object in front of me. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out what it is. The base is a box with a small display screen that looks almost like a kitchen scale, but with a ‘T’-shaped contrivance protruding out of the middle, all of it coated in silver. ‘Is it a lamp?’ someone posits. ‘It can’t be, where’s the bulb?’ ‘Look, it’s definitely a scale,’ someone else says firmly. ‘Then what’s that bit sticking out of it?’ We're baffled. Eventually, Charlotte, the PR, drifts past. ‘I’m sorry,’ I offer, feeling foolish, ‘but what actually is this?’ ‘Ah,’ said Charlotte. ‘That is actually for weighing falcons.’ I have come to the workshop and offices of Grant Macdonald, the renowned silversmith, partly to attend the unveiling of an incredible clock crafted by the company and partly to take a peek behind

THEY have become KNOWN FOR their beautiful bespoke WORK the scenes and see what actually goes on in a modern silversmiths. We have been told that we can try our hand at some practical silversmithing ourselves, although as someone who is likely to injure themselves making toast this prospect filled me with equal parts of excitement and fear.

Our tour begins in the offices, where a mysterious looking machine is whirring away. In the pre-3D printer world, the first step involved in silversmithing was to make an incredibly detailed model out of wax, a process that could take hours, even days, and if a client wanted something altered, the process had to begin again. But now comprehensive 3D models are produced by superimposing wafer-thin layers of plastic on top of one another to the specifications of a model designed on a computer. The printer itself is utterly mesmerising – watching something on a screen appear fully made, seemingly out of thin air – approaches Star Trek levels of futuristic. Though it soon becomes clear that this is one of the only parts of silversmithing to introduce new technology in hundreds of years. In the workshop are wooden workbenches, weathered tools and even an anvil. We are taken through the process step by step, meeting Grant Macdonald’s team of highly skilled craftsmen, each of whom is dedicated to a different stage of the operation until we reach a tray of silver keyrings, each bearing our name. It is upon us, the moment I had been dreading: audience participation. The hard part has already been taken care of (the actual shaping and crafting of the keyring) we would just be finishing it off.

HOMES & INTERIORS / BEHIND THE SCENES The process of filing the silver to smooth out scratches

I am led to a workstation, handed a file and told to sand off the scratch marks on the silver that will prevent it from becoming smooth and shiny when it is polished. This is a pleasant surprise – the only thing I have to worry about here is accidentally sanding off my gel manicure. We are instructed to hold the keyring against the wooden edge of the bench firmly and file in one direction away from our fingers. I feel confident and appear to be making good progress for a few minutes, but then my fingers begin to cramp and I can't hold the keyring without flexing vigorously. Once we have given it the old college try, the (incredibly encouraging) professionals take over. Our next task is to solder the ring at the top of the keyring closed. This sounds far more hazardous. We are lead into the room containing the anvil I spied earlier and, sure enough, it soon becomes evident that this task will involve both fire and a level of coordination that I severely lack. I let the others take over and emerge with all ten fingers intact. The keyrings are then taken to be polished as we move on to bubbles and nibbles in the room where the clock is displayed. Grant Macdonald have become known for their beautiful bespoke work,

taking commissions from clients around the world and for luxury car brand Aston Martin. The stunning Imperial Clock is worth £100,000 and is inspired by the 18th Century French Ormolu Clock; it took 320 hours of handcraftsmanship and 80 hours polishing and is now on display in the Grant Macdonald store in Harrods. Grant himself joins us for a glass of champagne (served in a silver flute) after our tour and shares some of his stories, telling us about the first thing he ever made in silver (a small spoon that he still has to this day). His accomplishments range from the sublime to the fantastical – from the reconstruction of the orb and cross that sits atop the Church of Our Lady in Dresden (originally destroyed in the bombings of WWII) to the crafting of eight foot tall palm trees for a palace. Each project is imbued with the precision, creativity and expertise of this London-based team of craftsmen, who are emerging as one of the premier silversmiths in the world. And as far as I'm concerned, anyone responsible for designing a falcon scale is well on the road to greatness. u

his September sees the introduction of the ‘She Inspires Art’ event, taking place at Bonhams on the 16th. Uniting a handful of renowned international artists, each has created works to go up for auction, from which all proceeds will go to women’s rights charity, Women for Women International. Each artist was commissioned to create a piece inspired by women and their continued plight, and in some cases flight, to raise money for women in need. The charity works to help female survivors of war and conflict from around the world, but the money raised during the ‘She Inspires Art’ auction will go specifically towards helping women in Northern Nigeria, and Syrian women currently seeking refuge in Iraq. The works will be exhibited and can be bid on until the 15th September, alongside a variety of interactive installations and powerful performance pieces. One of the most anticipated showcases is a multi-sensory artwork from Kohei Nawa, while Amanda Coogan, a renowned contemporary performance artist, will act out a 12-minute choreographed piece, in

A woman’s accomplishments should not depend on her GENDER. It should depend on her DREAMS AND HARD WORK

which she examines and represents the work of Women for Women International. Long fighting for the rights of women across the world, renowned architect and the first female winner of the Prtizker Architecture Prize, Zaha Hadid, has curated the art book for the ‘She Inspires Art’ auction, as well as donating two Liquid Glacial stools (pictured above) to raise money for the cause. Below is an exclusive extract taken from the art book, in which Hadid describes her own passion for women’s rights, the importance of this particular project, and what it means to her: “When I was growing up in Iraq, it was my mother and father who gave me the confidence to try new things and ignited my passion for discovery. I am forever grateful for their enlightened guidance and selfless support. “The headmistress of the nuns’ school I attended as a young Kevin Francis Gray, Ballerina

girl in Baghdad was deeply committed to the education of women. We were all the girls from different religions – Muslim, Chrisitan, Jewish – it made no difference to her. She understood the importance of supporting every young girl; to give her

the confidence to conquer the next step. “A woman’s accomplishments should not depend on her gender, ethnicity, nationality or religion. It should depend on the scope of her dreams and her hard work to achieve them. “But hard work is not always enough. Some of the biggest challenges arise from circumstance and injustice. Today, ignorance and resistance against women still exists; blatant or subtle, deliberate or – and, perhaps, worse – casual, not even recognised by their perpetrators. “I see women the world over as smart, gifted and strong, with the talent and commitment to transform lives. Support brings knowledge and self-belief, empowering women to build a better future. “Teamwork is very important to me; I’ve always believed in it. Great things come from the inventiveness and abilities of a team working together and supporting each other. “Women facing violence, marginalisation and poverty due to war and conflict need our support. Together we can achieve progress. Their strength, their commitment and their achievements define us all.” ◆ Wednesday 16 September, Bonhams, London; womenforwomen.org.uk

HOMES & INTERIORS / Q&A I TRULY HOPE

it will raise the profile OF CERAMICS

RVDB: What inspires you? RM: For my own work I draw on themes of British colonialism and the UK’s rich tapestry of cultures. RVDB: Who is your favourite artist? RM: That’s a tough question as there’s so much art I enjoy for different reasons. One artist I particularly admire is Grayson Perry. He’s an immensely skilled maker and every piece is beautifully executed. He’s also successfully crossed the art/craft divide.

A Fine Art

Absolutely talks to Richard Miller ahead of BBC2’s The Great Pottery Throwdown I n t e r v i e w r o m y va n d e n b r o e k e

ROMY VAN DEN BROEKE: Was it always ceramics? RICHARD MILLER: I was always interested in creating objects in three dimensions and clay offered a tactile material that was responsive and approachable. RVDB: What has been the most memorable or exciting job you’ve been involved with? RM: There have been a number of memorable ones but I can narrow my favourites down to two: The first was on the set of Eastenders at BBC Elstree. We were tasked with recreating the front of Walford East train station. We had to recreate Victorian station frontage and make the tiles look as if they had aged over 100 years; the second is a project we completed recently with ceramicist Kate Malone and EPR Architects. It consisted of a 900 m² façade for a new building in Savile Row. It was a project that ticked all the boxes.

RVDB: Your work is varied. How do you approach each project? RM: The tile projects usually have really clear briefs: a client approaches me and I create a product that satisfies the brief. My own creative work is very different; it rarely has a strict deadline and constantly evolves.

RVDB: What can we expect from the show? RM: I would say, everything you can expect from the ‘bake off’ and more. Clay is such a unique material and watching it being manipulated is mesmerizing. RVDB: How is the show a positive for the ceramics community? RM: I think it will be hugely positive for Ceramics. Every task the potters undertook was designed to be a true test of skills. I think it will show just how hard the process is, but also how satisfying it is to take clay and create something beautiful. ◆

RVDB: What is it about your job that you love? RM: I think the most satisfying thing is working with clay every day. I also love the fact that I get to collaborate with all sorts of people and am always learning. RVDB: What design era inspires you? RM: The architecture I enjoy most would be Victorian. There was an abundant use of tiles during this period, both internally and externally. It always provides the biggest challenge when trying to match glaze colours and clay bodies for restoration.

99 CHIS_OCT15_Rich Miller.indd 99

RVDB: You are a part of The Great British Pottery Throw Down, soon to be aired on BBC 2. What was that like? RM: It was an amazing show to be a part of. The contestants did a fantastic job to deal with the pressure of working with clay as well as being filmed by TV cameras. I was an on-screen technician, so my role consisted of loading kilns and setting up the workshop. I truly hope it will raise the profile of ceramics.

A HOME FROM

HOME

Car interiors increasingly look like the living spaces we drive away from. Absolutely considers their importance to us – and their future direction. Wo r d s C r a i g T h o M a s

O

n average, we spend 364 hours a year in our cars, covering a total distance of 6,584 miles. That’s an awful lot of time to hang out in the same enclosed space, day after day, so it’s unsurprising that drivers (60%, according to some studies) set a lot of store by the quality of their car’s interior. After all, sat in a car for that long – plus all the additional time parked up, waiting for the kids, for example – means that you will spend a lot of time looking at (perhaps not necessarily consciously) the inside of your car.

TOUCHSCREENS AND TABLET-LIKE CONTROLLERS OF

infotainment systems are now starting to dominate THE CENTRE CONSOLES OF NEW CARS

We therefore want to feel as comfortable in our cars as we do in, say, our living rooms and this is something that car designers have come realise – albeit relatively belatedly. It wasn’t until the 1990s that car companies started to understand just how important the interior of a car was to consumers. Manufacturers realised that car buyers

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

Chis_Oct15_Motoring Feature.indd 102

were finding it difficult to tell models apart by the exterior styling (things haven’t changed much since then: you only have to look at the lines of similarlooking family hatchbacks on today’s roads), so they started to pay more attention to the comfort, functionality and general ambience of a car’s cabin, especially at the premium end of the market. In the 21st Century, car brands are now highly focused on their models’ interiors, using designers who specialise in interiors and looking to the worlds of fashion and home furnishings to source new trends and inspiration for new materials and forms. Take the materials; wood and leather have traditionally been the go-to choices for decades, especially in premium and luxury cars, but there’s been a change in recent years, driven by changing tastes among customers and, at the same time, concerns about sustainability. Adriana Monk, an automotive interior design consultant who has previously worked for Rolls-Royce and Land Rover, explained the changing trend, saying: “At one point if you wanted to be in the automotive luxury space you had to put wood and leather into the interiors. Now, you have to tell the environmental story, otherwise you’re not credible.” So, we’re now seeing recycled and reconstituted plant fibres and plastic bottles used as materials in car interiors, along with the likes of aluminium (brushed or textured) and the current

high-tech favourite, carbon fibre – which also has the advantage of reducing the weight of the car (in turn helping to make it more efficient). And there are advances in materials science all the time that are shifting the goalposts – as long as we, the consumers, are open-minded enough to accept them. Jenny Morgan-Douralis, a colour and trim designer for Australian car brand Holden suggests that such advances could indeed change the way we think. TRAVEL / AUTOMOTIVE Buick, the premium US car brand, she said: “It's almost like a glass. It's glasslike but it's a polymer, high-gloss. The word ‘plastic’ has connotations, but you can look at that and, from a purist's point of view, [that works]. You might look for ideas and see it in glass and think ‘How do we interpret that?’ And it might be in plastic. You can make it look beautiful.” And technology is not only changing the materials we’re seeing in our cars: it is also having a major effect on how car interiors look. Touchscreens and tablet-like controllers of infotainment systems are now starting to dominate the centre consoles of new cars, such as the Volvo XC90 and Tesla Model S. And, as everything in the car becomes controlled by tablet-like screens, in a single touch point, the numerous switches and buttons we expect to see in cars are gradually becoming redundant. This simplification of dashboards and consoles inevitably leads to a cleaner, more minimalist look in car interiors, one that we consumers seem to like. As Sheryl Connelly, a future trends guru working for Ford, explains: “Today, it’s the streamlined, uncluttered message that seems to resonate with people. It’s inviting. It makes you think like you can’t

CABINS have to

be functional, as well as STYLISH AND COMFORTABLE

do anything wrong – you’re not going to break it.” Details are important, too. A little cubbyhole for change here, a shelf for a phone there – plus, of course, those all-important cupholders for a takeaway coffee or bottle of water – all help create a sense that the space you’re in is yours, a home away from home. Cabins have to be functional, as well as stylish and comfortable. So what's next for car interiors?

Seat 20V20

105 Chis_Oct15_Motoring Feature.indd 105

Well, as self-driving cars start to appear on our roads in the next decade – to a point where they will be the norm by the middle of the century – how we use the space inside a car will change dramatically. Freed from the need to contain a steering wheel, pedals and other controls, the cars of the future really will start to resemble lounges on wheels, with occupants – including the driver – able to recline and relax, letting the car take the strain of the journey. A shape of things to come is the Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion concept, unveiled earlier this year. As Dr Dieter Zetsche, head of MercedesBenz Cars said at its launch: “The car is growing beyond its role as a mere means of transport and will ultimately become a mobile living space.” So a cabin constructed using openpore walnut wood, white nappa leather, Plexiglass and metal surfaces is, in effect, a digital living space for the occupants, who interact with six displays on which they can engage with all kinds of on-themove, online activities. There's no doubt that we're currently in the middle of an evolution in automotive interiors, as they change from becoming a place in which we control movement to one that happens to be a space that moves. So, in years to come, don't be surprised to find that these spaces are so homely that we find ourselves looking for excuses to spend even more time in our cars than we do now. ◆

Molly Pecksniff is a child raised by gypsies and snared by a recurring nightmare in author Abi Elphinstone’s assured debut. tokke’s revolutionary Tripp Trapp high chair dates back to 1972. Designed to grow with your child, its main ergonomic advantages lie in its dining table height, so baby can sit right amidst the family action, and clever frame which allows for adjustment (both the depth and the height of the seat and footplates can be changed). Few other high chairs can claim to offer 14 different positions, seeing your child through to the ripe old age of... well, adulthood, apparently. Made from beech, another big plus is that it’s easy to assemble, though its solid wood frame does mean it’s not quite as easy to move around thereafter. As with all designconscious bits of kit, it comes in a number of cool colourways and can be reconfigured with all manner of additional equipment – from a baby seat and cushion to a special tabletop with fun motifs. ◆

“IT’S JUST A WONDERFUL EVENT” 2014 Visitor

We had no idea how complicated and competitive the London education market would be. A neighbour suggested the Show and we ending up registering our children for a nursery and a prep school in one afternoon. 2014 Visitor

We have been trying to decide between co-ed and single-sex education for our daughter. We heard a great Education Theatre talk on this conundrum and then used the show to talk with Heads and admissions teams. It was a highly productive afternoon. 2014 Visitor

Join us at this year’s Independent School Show and find out why so many parents were thrilled they came last year. With more than 200 of our leading schools attending, this is the country’s biggest one-stop-shop for the very best in independent education. Finding the right school for your child is one of life’s toughest decisions; the ISS is a chance meet key admissions teams, speak with heads, enquire about entry requirements at all stages and explore scholarships and bursaries all under one roof. There are also enlightening and informative talks from some of our stellar heads and leading educationalists in the education theatre throughout the two days.

I

was delighted that Absolutely asked me to write this piece, but I was determined to try and steer clear of estate agency market ‘chat.’ What better way, therefore, than to start by featuring my dog, Nutmeg in the photograph? Of course, this casual distraction is very much in the hope that potential clients will decide that her cute and unintellectual appearance will encourage them to immediately call John D. Wood & Co. for an appraisal of their property! But more importantly, she is here to remind readers about the Chiswick House Dog Show on 27 September, which John D. Wood & Co. proudly sponsor. On the day there will be spectator stands, dog judging events, and beer and food provided by local businesses. It really is a great day out. I will be entering Nutmeg, although with her wonky ears and a tongue too big for her mouth, my expectations are low… The great thing about owning a dog in this area is that I am spoilt

LIVING IN THIS AREA IS FANTASTIC, AND WORKING HERE AS AN ESTATE AGENT IS BRILLIANT... NO DAY IS EVER THE SAME.

for choice on walking locations – Chiswick house grounds, Acton Green, Chiswick Common and of course, the River Thames. These green spaces are merely one of the many great attractions of this area of West London. I moved here from Berkshire seven years ago, and Chiswick’s abundance of outside space made Chiswick an obvious choice for Mr and Mrs Rollo. Living in this area is fantastic, and working here as an estate agent is brilliant. The people you meet and the houses you see are always different, meaning no day is ever the same. And the stories, the tens of houses I’ve locked myself in and out of, I once even met a client who had a wolf for a pet (I’m hoping he’s not entering the dog show).

These experiences are just the beginning; there are so many others which cannot be repeated in such a short article. I first came across real estate agency ten years ago completely by accident. Having enjoyed my university years where education was the lowest on the list of my objectives (it took me four years to do a three year course), I was hardly going to be a lawyer or an accountant. I started out in recruitment. But when recruiting a candidate for a position for a competitor, it was a role I couldn’t pass up so I put myself forward. Matching people to jobs, or buyers to houses, there is a similarity, which, when I first considered the career change, was something I thought I could get on board with. My goodness I’ve enjoyed it! People always ask if it is the thrill of the deal that makes it such a great job. Of course. But more than anything, it’s helping people move. Whilst always challenging and never straight forward, it’s incredibly rewarding. ◆

At Sworn & Co we are proud to be an independent, family-run business, providing a personal service with local knowledge. With more than 136 years experience of the Chiswick market (and being one of the few Estate Agencies that is also Chartered Surveyors ) we are able to give you truly honest and professional advice whether it is in regards to Sales, Lettings, Block and Estate Management, Surveys, Lease Extensions and Renewals or Party Wall Awards.

Don’t just take our word for it, here are some of our testimonials from happy customers and clients from the last few months...

I have been working with Sworn for over 15 years now, as an owner of property in Chiswick. I went to them because they are a family firm, not a chain, and I liked the people and thought they had a vested interest in Chiswick. They are all that, and more.

Having dealt with many Estate and management agents over the years I have seen the worst and best of the industry and I can whole heartily say that Sworn & Co are up there as the best.

The team who support the rentals are great; they don't change every 3 months like other companies, and really take an interest in your property. They are reliable, professional and efficient, with good repairmen if you need them.

You’re the first estate agent that I would consider sending a Christmas card to!

Sales Client

Mr M G - Tenant

Don't waste time ringing around: Sworn are the people to go to.

… There is no question in our minds that this longestablished Firm of estate agents and chartered surveyors would always be trustworthy and discreet, loyal to its Clients and successful in its dealings with its customers. We confidently recommend Sworn & Co for any property transaction, in the certainty that the outcome will be satisfactory to all parties concerned.

Mrs J B - Landlord Client

We have worked with Sworn & Co over many years and have never regretted that decision. They have always been friendly, helpful and efficient, and we would not want to work with anyone else.

Mr R. M – Landlord and Survey Client

We are happy to recommend Sworn & Co as managing agents to other residential blocks whenever the occasion arises.

Now that everything is successfully completed today, we just wanted to say a heartfelt thank you for the way in which you have handled the whole sale. We well know from past experience how tricky property transactions can be, and this one has gone so smoothly because of your sound professional judgment and prompt handling at every stage…

Messers J.P & G.C – Estate Management Client

…Whenever I had to deal with Sworn they always were prompt and efficient in fixing the problems one might encounter in a Victorian building. I found them to be honest and fair and would recommend them.

Addison Road, closer to Shepherd’s Bush, is increasingly featured in this list. Other areas that came into the fold included The Bishops Avenue and its near-neighbour, Hampstead Garden Suburb. Today the net has spread a little further but it’s really the volume

D

o you remember 1996? Boy band Take That split up, Prince Charles granted Diana a divorce, the BSE beef crisis was in full swing, and Glen Hoddle took over from Terry Venables as the England football team manager. But what only a handful of estate agents might remember is that 1996 was the year in which the first house sold for £5m+ in London. The property in question is a semi-detached stucco-fronted villa in The Boltons, Chelsea; the road that the Daily Telegraph recently revealed to be the UK’s most

expensive street. At £8m, the house was the first in London to break through the £5m barrier, followed soon after by a house in Upper Phillimore Gardens, and then a property in Roland Gardens, both at £5.5m. London’s property market blossomed from then on in (aside from a quiet 1997 in which the Labour party swiped political control from the Conservatives). Indeed, half a dozen £5m+ properties were sold in 2000 while last year some 250 were purchased, collectively worth £2.09 billion. During the late Noughties the first tranche were north of Fulham Road and around Kensington, in particular, Holland Park. But

and prices that have increased. There are currently just under 500 houses for sale over £5m in London – most of which are in Chelsea, Kensington, Mayfair, Belgravia, Knightsbridge, Holland Park, Notting Hill – with a smattering just north of the Bayswater Road. There are also hotspots in St John’s Wood and Hampstead. You might also be surprised to hear that Totteridge, in the capital’s northern suburbs, also features the occasional £5m+ house, as does Wimbledon, Richmond and the areas on the corridor along the Upper Richmond Road. One fascinating aspect of the £5m+ market is the extraordinary acceleration in price that this elite market has enjoyed since the late 1990s. The first property I mentioned at the beginning of this article, in The Boltons, is now valued at around £40m – based on the fact that a similar house on the street sold for £54m two years ago. It’s crazy that just nine years later, £5m seems like a relatively small amount of money. ◆

SAY HELLO TO SAVILLS We welcome Savills to their new Ealing office at 3 The Green MATTHEW GILBERT & MARK HOSKIN Sales & Lettings Managers Savills, Ealing

avills have been selling property in Ealing for some time but the new office (which opened in early September) was the missing link in their West London network. Having been determined to find the right place for their new office, it took two years to find the space at 3 The Green. Heading up the West London region is director, Christopher Bramwell who has been with Savills for 19 years. Christopher lives in Ealing and his children go to school locally so he is very excited about expanding into the area. Matthew has been in residential agency for 15 years and had worked in West and South West London before gravitating back to Ealing in 2011 when he opened the new sales office for Hamptons International. Mark entered the lettings industry in 2009, working for an independent in Ealing. In 2012 he

moved to a small corporate company and opened an office in Northfields and then Chiswick, before returning to Ealing with Savills as the head of the department for lettings in the Ealing office. He brings across a forward thinking approach and a wealth of local knowledge acquired over his years in the industry. “Back then you could feel the excitement about Crossrail and its affect in these areas so house prices were rising rapidly. Ealing is firmly on the radar for buyers these days especially those who are moving in from other areas.” Estate agents are always praising the Crossrail route, as areas that would have previously been passed by property journalists are now enjoying their time in the spotlight. Matt is hugely excited about leading the residential department for Savills new office and is looking forward to the regeneration of the area. Large projects like the rebirth of the Arcadia Centre and the ongoing improvements within the Ealing Broadway shopping centre are excellent, but Matt says that “the smaller businesses opening up, from trendy coffee shops to bespoke boutiques are a delight to see.” With new stations at Ealing Broadway and West Ealing preparing to receive Crossrail services, the Broadway area and its currently very tired and dysfunctional station will improve people’s impression of Ealing Broadway immensely. ◆

e’ve seen strong demand and growth in prices during the past few months, especially for one and two bedroom flats. Quite a few sellers in Chiswick are looking to trade up and move out of London, but when they’re not able to find a suitable property to move into there is a knock-on effect that hits the flat they’re selling, increasing the demand for smaller properties even further. Autumn is now here, the summer holiday season is over and I’m expecting really strong demand for flats and houses in all price ranges because there hasn’t been a better time to sell. Susie McEldowney, Winkworth’s Lettings Manager says, “We’ve had a superb year in lettings and have seen a real rise in corporate tenants. inkworth in Chiswick is the latest company to join the NALS nationwide letting scheme. Set up to provide a much-needed service that enables landlords and tenants to avoid the pitfalls of dealing with ‘cowboy’ letting agents, the scheme is supported by some of the most powerful voices in the property industry. The professionally regulated service means that you can trust your agent to work to protect your interests by dealing responsibly with procedures involved in letting and management. Alastair Hilton, Manager of Winkworth, Chiswick says, “We see being a NALS licensed firm as an excellent opportunity to increase business within our lettings department. This visible assurance provided by the NALS logo gives prospective landlords and tenants the confidence of knowing the service they can expect from dealing with us.” ◆
