arch is officially spring. And while it might not feel like it yet, it's comforting to know that it soon will. Any minute now, we will all start brightening up our palettes with cheerier clothes in lighter shades, wearing fewer layers and generally emerging from the winter fug. So in this issue we're focusing on happy things, such as shoes by design-focused Tracey Neuls who won't countenance anything uncomfortable or ugly, which means that her shoes come with a guaranteed spring in their step. We're also loving all things peach, which may sound unlikely as a new

We admire colourful rugs for underfoot with Beldi, London's best Berber carpet dealer, we celebrate female chefs with Bonny Porter and we investigate the new generation of ceramic artists. All this and the usual mix of local events, shopping advice and property news. Enjoy the issue. ◆

ith primetime TV exposure, packed courses and record sales, it seems we are a nation going potty for ceramics. As one of the most ancient industries on the planet, ceramic artistry boasts an impressive history. There’s an inherent magic in the craftsmanship that has always appealed so it’s no wonder that the potter’s star is rising. From the urns of antiquity to the cereal bowls of today, the technology and techniques have undoubtedly changed but the basics remain. Ceramic Art London is the leading showcase for contemporary ceramic art and one of the most dynamic displays of the industry’s finest from across the globe. This year’s instalment returns to it’s home at Central Saint Martins in King’s Cross from 31 March to 2 April. The fair, now in its 13th year, will display over 90 artists and a varied selection

ARTS & CULTURE / AGENDA A chance to PURCHASE exclusive, handmade PIECES directly from the MAKERS works will encompass the full range of ceramic-making techniques and with prices ranging from £25 to £8,000, the event caters to all budgets and interests. Ceramics have echoed the natural world for millennia and so it’s fitting that this should be a recurring motif in the showcase this year. Pieces to look out for

of exciting and ambitious work. For the artists, Ceramic Art London offers a unique platform to showcase and sell their work. For gallery owners and collectors, it’s a chance to snap up new talent and for the public it presents a compelling snapshot of the global contemporary ceramics market and a chance to purchase exclusive, handmade pieces directly from the makers. Situated in the heart of the thriving King’s Cross Knowledge Quarter, Ceramic Art London is conveniently located for creators, collectors and the curious. Visitors will enjoy meandering through the vivid displays in the beautiful Grade II listed Victorian

Granary Building. The venue last year underwent a £200m renovation from Stirling Prize-winning architects Stanton Williams, and offers natural light radiating from a glass ceiling three stories high. An idyllic, historic setting that is just as astounding as the art housed within. The show brings a plethora of dynamic, up-and-coming artists hailing from the UK, Ireland, Spain, Germany, Denmark, South Korea and Japan. Items on sale range from contemporary twists on functional every-day homewares to sublime sculptural pieces and experimental work that pushes the boundaries of this ancient craft. Exhibited

include Nichola Theakston’s haunting primate sculptures and Charlotte Pack’s detailed models of endangered species, teetering on the lids of slipcast vessels. The event will additionally host an exceptional display of work by current Central Saint Martins ceramics students, offering an additional platform for emerging talent. The relationship between the school and Ceramic Art London is bolstered further with a lively programme of events including CLAYTALKS@CAL, a series of free talks and workshops providing insights into the pervasive world of pots.  31 March -2 April Central Saint Martins, 1 Granary Square, N1; ceramicartlondon.com

Designer Tracey Neuls makes footwear like nobody else. Absolutely meets her to discuss form, function and emotion in the world of shoes Wo r d s P e n d l e H a r t e

B

“Is this an art gallery?” It’s a common question when people walk into Tracey Neuls’ shop. Not for her the shoes-on-shelves merchandising option. For Neuls, a shoe needs to be seen from all angles and ideally, in motion. So in her stores, they dangle from the ceiling, surrounded by a changing conceptual display that may recreate a tea party, a forest or a library. “Next I think I’m going to do an old-fashioned office, Barton Fink-style,” she says. We are in Redchurch Street, in Neuls’ second shop. The first one opened in Marylebone, originally as a wholesale outlet, but people kept coming in to buy shoes. Canadian-born Neuls has a unique approach to shoe design and her shoes inspire great loyalty – everyone knows about a woman’s special relationship with her footwear, and Neuls’s shoes particularly seem to be ones that people feel real affection for. Why is that? She

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

NH_March17_TRACEY NEULS.indd 26

thinks it’s because they exist slightly outside fashion. “A lot of the trendy shoes, you have to wear them in certain ways but these have so many different ways to wear them. Design is very emotional,” she says. “We made a conscious decision to associate ourselves more with the design side than fashion.” Her shoes are sculptural and slightly theatrical; their shapes range from simple to elaborate but

26 27/02/2017 11:05

FASHION / INTERVIEW

For Neuls, a shoe needs to be SEEN

FROM ALL ANGLES AND IDEALLY, IN MOTION childhood and enables the non-angular, fluid look that characterizes her pieces. “When I started my first collection I was thinking about the feeling of body shape you have with clothes, while in shoes there were box shapes and pointy shapes, but no foot shapes. I thought, let’s bring the shape of the foot in.” This was over 15 years ago now and people still come in to the shops wearing shoes from the first collections, she says. The comfort factor is key. Neuls’ pet shoe hate is ‘the ones that make women look impaired. I can’t stand it when women hobble and it’s not just heels, it can be cheap flat lace ups that give you blisters, or anything.’ Her moulded rubber soles are cobbler-free in that they don’t have those tips that wear away and need replacing, and they’re very robust. “For five years I was walking between my two shops [Shoreditch to Marylebone and back] and it barely even shows in the soles. You could buy five pairs of Converse in that time,” she says. The ‘Geek’ Derby shoe has a rounded toe and a slight whiff of the pixie to it – it’s firmly designed for walking, and also for cycling: Neuls has become known for her Bike collection that features strong, practical shoes with robust soles and reflective strips. Not that she’s much of a

they all share a roundedness, a balance and a wearability that’s down to comfort as well as aesthetics. Neuls started designing shoes when she was nine. “I would make them out of cardboard boxes, cutting and stapling Kellogs’ cornflakes packages and then I’d go for a walk around town in them. I remember looking at people’s faces and wondering if they were going to notice.” This was in Canada, where she says there was no kind of design school, so it wasn’t until she came to England and went to Cordwainers that her shoemaking began in earnest. And by then she had worked in fashion for some time, making swimwear for Nike and other pieces with a bodycon feel, which contributed to her individual approach to shoes. Her preferred method of working is to mould each shape in plasticine, a material that reminds her of

cyclist herself – but she had spotted women cycling in her shoes and noticed that they’d ruined the lovely wooden heel construction. “I realized that because the shoes were so comfortable and people were wearing them from day to night, people were biking in them from day to night too, so I thought I had to do something.” Not wanting to give people anything to ruin, she designed the single piece, integrated shoe. “You never lose the pad, the leather’s dyed through so if you do scuff it on a pedal you can just buff it up. Normally sports shoes end up being chunky, but I don’t think that has to be the way.” The Bike collection overlaps with the regular collection, and Neuls points

out that the reflective strips appeal to clubbers too. Inside the higher heels she might have an inch and a half of hardcore rubber, so when you’re walking you have a literal spring in your step. “It’s quite disconcerting at first but you soon get used to it. It's actually quite addictive.” Coming from provincial Canada, Neuls had high hopes for London, then found it disappointing that the retail experience was so homogenous. “You could go from shop to shop and find that they’re all flogging the same stuff. So even though it was different from Canada, it was all the same. So that spurred me on to do something different. I don’t know if you can call it an epiphany and I don’t know if that’s what fashion is, but it doesn’t need to be this way.” Some of her proudest shoe moments are connected to people’s personal stories. “After 9/11 we had a woman write in telling us that she’d walked for more than 15 kilometres from Manhattan through the tunnel in our mid-heels while other women were carrying their shoes with their feet bleeding. She wanted to thank me for making such amazing shoes.” Shoe shopping can create a confessional atmosphere and women will often come into the store with their daughters and spend an hour choosing and chatting. That’s why the wholesale plan became a retail store. Buyers just aren’t as interesting to deal with. “They’ll complain that, say,

29 NH_March17_TRACEY NEULS.indd 29

platforms are in and you’re not doing them, while actual customers just want you to make their feet happy.” Ultimately, for Neuls, it’s about design and craftsmanship. Each component in her shoes is designed by her, unlike many big designers’ pieces which might be put together from prototype components laid out by the factories as if they’re shoe making kits. “I feel like we’re holding onto one of those crafts like old perfumery or something,” she says. ◆

fter a tough day it’s really hard to relax. Quiet, stylish and comfortable, this blow dry and beauty bar in Parsons Green make it possible. Founded by makeup artist, beauty blogger and entrepreneur Bridget O’Keeffe, Blush + Blow is a beautiful, quiet and stylish salon that offers all you need to feel amazing. While the extensive menu offers services to sort your hair, skin, nails, brows, bikini line, back knots and, of course, make-up, I needed a pedicure and blow out. Sitting down with a cup of tea – peppermint naturally – I sunk into the giant armchair gratefully. From the shelves of Essie polishes I chose a sparkly hot pink. My super friendly pedicurist worked quickly and precisely; she also works at fashion events where you have to be good and fast. Popping on some little foam slippers I shuffled over from the gold foot washing basins to the long mirrors where another member of Team Blow washed and blew my hair to Chelsea girl perfection. The loose, glossy waves bounced around and looked so good I called my friends to arrange an emergency night out – hair that good needs to be seen. ◆

HEALTH & BEAUTY / HAIR

CHANGE CAN BE DAUNTING

– so be brave

ASK HARI Is it time for a colour detox? Wo r d s h a r i

I

t is official; we are a nation of colour addicts, with 15.75 million Brits regularly dyeing our hair. Spurred on by social media, celebrity culture, not to mention a whole new rainbow of crazy colours, this year we just couldn’t help ourselves take the Pantone plunge. No wonder really, when over half of you say that having your colour done in the salon chair ‘gives you a boost.’ But there’s another shady reason why so many of you are booking in at the salon for tonal work - and they call it colour correction. Because for every ‘boost’ there’s a blunder, a build-up or a base that just needs a little tender loving clean. Step forward the new Colour Reboot, a palette cleansing treatment for hair that

needs a dye detox. Created by L’Oreal Professional the treatment removes unwanted tones, returning your locks back to beautiful ‘virgin’ hair basics. Over-processed hair that has lost its glow will return to a shiny, damage-controlled state. Post-hair refuel stylists can begin to create your dream colour work, or you can simply…go nude? Think of it as your hair’s great spring awakening. From £50 at Hari’s, Notting Hill. Call 020 8873 0544 to book. ‘HELP, I THINK I’M STUCK IN A STYLE RUT’ Sad but true, a haircut can be just as dating as perfume or make-up, instantly placing you in an age bracket, even if you feel like you don’t belong. My advice

49 NH_March17_Haris_Hair.indd 49

to clients has always been: ‘if you find yourself wearing the very same lip liner, floral scent and that cut that you sported back in your 20s, it’s time for an update.’ Change can be daunting, but a new colour and cut can lop off the years instantly, so be brave. The first thing to think about is your shade and tone, which needs to change as your complexion does. A halo of light around the face and on the ends can be incredibly flattering as it adds warmth to skin, which we tend to lose as we age. Forget the age-old myth that you need to go darker as you grow older - taking away that movement and light can actually be the least flattering option. We also have this dated notion that over-40s need to go short. Not true. The only rules are: keep ends thick and blunt, you can keep the free-flowing length. What matters most is both hair health and how the shape falls around the face - a long with a youthful attitude, of course.” ◆

THE COMPETITION: Win a haircut with Hari, worth £350. Runners up can also get their hands, and hair, on one of three beauty bags, filled with four products from Shu Uemura, Kerastase and L’Oreal Professional for dreamy Summer tresses. To take part please visit absolutely.london/haris-hair

HANNAH HOPKINS: Do you think it can be tough for female chefs to get into the restaurant industry? BONNY PORTER: Being a chef is no longer a man’s world – there are plenty of talented and hardworking women in the industry. In saying that, like in many industries, there is a glass ceiling and there are instances when men get the job over women. HH: If you were to cook a dish inspired by the woman who's had an impact on your life, who would that be and what would you cook? BP: My mum of course! She has an emerging allergy to Mammalian Meat which was caused from a tick bite. So, the dish would be free of mammal meat and its by-products to ensure that she could enjoy it! HH: Which other chefs are you most inspired by? BP: Kylie Kwong is an Australian Chef and Restauranteur of Billy Kwong in Sydney. If you’re in the area – go! She is not only one

of the kindest chefs I know, but is extremely talented at pairing native Australian fauna & flora with Chinese regional dished. HH: Whose food or restaurant have you been blown away by this year? BP: Temper in Soho hands down. HH: What do you love most about the London food scene? What's it like in comparison to the Australian food scene? BP: I love that London food scene is a bit selective in the fads that it is willing to follow. It’s almost old fashioned and doesn’t dive head first into a craze without reason. The Australian food scene is very different – it gives everything a go. HH: What are your biggest restaurant bug-bears? BP: People haven’t caught on that labour is money. Being a chef is a tough gig and it pays poorly considering the long standing hours, pressure and heat. People complain that something costs an amount and rarely think about the labour involved in creating that dish. HH: You competed in Masterchef Australia. What was the experience like, what was most challenging and how has it helped you in the industry? Balls & Company in Soho

Bonny hard at work in the kitchen

THERE ARE PLENTY OF talented women IN THE INDUSTRY

HH: You place huge emphasis on local and family run suppliers. Why is this so important to you? And how do you go about finding your sources and suppliers? BP: I firmly believe that producers are the unsung heroes of this industry. If we get a premium product that is reared with care, and continue to do it justice in the kitchen, then there is very little that can go wrong. Balls & Company is an independent business – we have our ups and downs and family run suppliers understand this. I find my suppliers through good old fashioned research and word of mouth.

BP: I loved filming as it was the sheer logistics of a single episode was fascinating! The actual experience was stressful and was meticulously planned to make the contestants as emotional as possible. There is only a one ten minute phone call a week to the family and no knowledge of current events and little sleep with long hours. I set up my own company when I was 25 years old – as a young woman, deaf and an expat, having Masterchef under my belt made it easier to take me seriously.

HH: What is your favourite cuisine to eat and cook? BP: Asian food. Each cuisine finds a balance or harmony in each dish slightly differently – Vietnamese add fresh herbs, Malaysian cuisine is grounded in harmonious spice base and Chinese cuisine uses ferments to find a balance. It fascinates me and I strive to add different ingredients in the quest for balance in my food too.

CHEFFING IS NO

longer a man's world -

HH: Your restaurant Balls & Co is meatball-focused. How did that come about? Did you see meatballs emerging as the next big food trend over here? BP: The Australian industry is very different from that in the UK. As such it was easy for me to see a gap in the market. Meatballs had been well received in Sydney, Melbourne & New York and had yet to be realised here. I wanted to take the idea of meatballs and make it my own.

57 NH_March17_BONNY PORTER CHEF.indd 57

HH: What inspired the delicious array of chosen balls for the menu? BP: Balls & Company is all about doing the simple stuff well. Our suppliers are mostly family run, UK based businesses with a commitment to provenance and traceability. Producers are really the unsung heroes of this industry. It is their premium products which means that creating different flavours really just comes down to how to showcase each ball in the best way. Every dish is made to order, as such freshness and simplicity is key.

HH: What advice would you give to aspiring chefs? BP: Passion is important. Drive is too. Being a chef is hard but if you love what you do and can keep pushing yourself it can be an incredibly rewarding profession. ◆

ondon is having a Hockney moment – and if Pomona's were an artist, it would definitely be Hockney, in his California period. Bright, sunshine-drenched colours and a clean, fresh feel charactise Pomona's, which feels very un-London, especially when you remember the building's former incarnation as a traditional pub. The old mahogany bar with its tiles and Edwardian pub fittings were prime examples of their type but there's no trace of any of them now in this bright, candy-coloured interior. It feels fresh

and summery, cheerful and fun (maybe a touch kindergartenish, but in a good way). We are here for a family brunch and notice immediately that the mint tabletop matches our daughter's t-shirt perfectly, showing how youthful the palette is. Behind us we can hear the rumble of a serious smoothie maker, so we immediately order juices, plain pineapple for the children and a delicious chia, coconut and pineapple concoction for me. It's a mixed menu, less aggressively healthy than we might have feared, offering a wide range of options. So we order a crab and bacon burger that comes in a toasted brioche as an entire deep

fried soft shell crab with some perfectly crispy bacon and slightly spicy sauce. It's good, but needs salad and a grapefruit, quinoa, fennel and pine nut salad with crumbly goats cheese was a good match. We also went for a Ginger Pig steak with charred endive and horseradish, which was high class (if slightly salty) and an irresistible-sounding salad of shredded Brussels sprouts, Spenwood and hazelnuts, which was delicious and surprising. Who thinks of Brussels sprouts in February, and who thinks of shredding them, and aren't they usually really nasty cold? Success all round for this one, with its whole roast nuts and slivers of cheese. For the children, it's pancakes with blueberries and coconut yoghurt, and French toast with cinnamon cream. All around us, people are inexplicably videoing themselves pouring maple syrup onto waffles with great care – maybe it's the painterly surroundings that are inspiring them to create images, or maybe they just always do that. But with such a bright, fun colour palette as this, it's understandable to get a bit carried away. Next time we'll try dinner. ◆ POMONA'S 47 Hereford Road, W2; 020 7229 1503 pomonas.co.uk

hen Emma Wilson first went to Morocco 18 years ago, she wasn’t expecting to live there, and nor was she expecting to start a business. But fast forward to 2017 and she has two thriving business between London and Essaouira, and she’s known in both places as an expert in her field. Her speciality? Rugs, the kind that people have traditionally bought in the souks, though hers are the most beautiful and rare of all. Berber rugs are everywhere at the moment, and they have been heavily in demand for the last five years at least. And while everybody wants to return from a trip to Morocco with a rug, buying one can be a fraught process. Is it actually what it says it is? How can we be sure of quality? And how do we know what we should be paying? All of these issues are Wilson’s pet subjects. “Most rugs I choose are from the 70s or 80s, or even the 60s,” she says. “It’s just my taste. But they work with the way we live, with our open plan spaces and our stone or wooden floors. And it’s quite grey here, so a splash of colour just looks fantastic. Designers like Alvaro Aalto and Verner Panton were buying Moroccan rugs in the 1950s because they worked well with their furniture, but then they went out of fashion.” Wilson ended up buying a house in Essouira and renovating it, then returning

more and more often until she was actually living there. She set up Castles in the Sand, a holiday house rental company and her innate sense of style and eye for space let to her houses being featured in magazines internationally, and to her guests seeking her advice on rug-buying. “I met this guy Mustafa who had been working with rugs since he was 12 and I learnt a lot from him. Then I realised I was taking people to buy from him and I wasn’t getting anything out of it, so my friend Tamsin and I thought we should do something, and before we knew it, we were.” They set up Beldi Rugs and for Wilson, it’s a passion. Her enthusiasm for rugs is visible, and she’s very protective over

them. “I want them to go to a good home. It’s not about money. Someone once asked if they could cut a rug to make it square and I said, absolutely not – if you’re going to cut it, you can’t have it.” Her most popular rugs are Beni Ourains, big, heavy pieces made of 100% sheeps’ wool and natural dyes, which were traditionally made on home-made looms by women in their spare time and used to keep families warm in unheated houses with concrete floors. They are one-off, personal pieces, each one unique with its trademark diamond pattern slightly imperfect; often they have dates woven into the fabric. These rugs are are robust and designed to last a lifetime.

YOU OFTEN FIND PEOPLE SAYING rugs are Azilals when THEY'RE NOT and I'm obsessed with GIVING PEOPLE THE RIGHT INFORMATION

“They would take a year to make, working every day in your spare time as a woman. Then you’d make your mark in the pattern.” Wilson has one in her studio that’s 50 years old and she refers to it as a piece of art. “Imagine the work in that!” she says, admiring its substantial weight. Beni Ourains are of course still made, but commercially, so new ones are more uniform and not as characterful as those made on hand looms in the 1970s. They’re also thinner, whiter and less lush. “I don’t sell all kinds of rugs. Only ones that I personally really like, and I trust my taste,” she says. “I won’t buy anything I won’t live with.” Her beautiful house, pictured here, is evidence of her impeccable taste. Slightly thinner than Beni Ourains and with more colour, Azilal rugs are becoming increasingly difficult to find because of their huge popularity. “You often find people saying rugs are Azilals when they’re not, and I’m obsessed with giving people the right information,” says Wilson. Different designs and colours come from different tribes and areas in the Atlas mountains, and she’s able to identify most pieces as reliably as possible. Buying a rug from Beldi is a personal experience. You can visit her London studio and she’ll let you take a rug home and try it out before you commit. Several companies have tried to recruit her as their buyer, but she’d rather stay independent, and it's easy to see why. ◆ beldirugs.com; castlesinthesand.com

KIDS & EDUCATION / SCHOOL TALK

High-worth network London’s elite preps are fertile hunting grounds for parents wanting to further their own careers Wo r d s J a s m i n e R o b e r t s o n

W

hen Abigail, an ex-City lawyer, found herself as a single mum with two young daughters and in need of a new job, she knew exactly what her game plan was. Get her daughters into Pembridge Hall, one of Notting Hill’s most elite preps (known for its head count of senior bankers), get networking and nab herself a job back in the City. So she did. She’s now back in the Square Mile and her girls are getting a pretty good education, too. Parents, particularly of primaryaged school children, have long made firm friendships at the school gates. But with more and more women working, starting up and running their own business, they are also a great place for meeting and making business contacts. As the Talented Ladies Club website says: “The school gates are a brilliant chance to get to know a fresh group of talented mums and open your professional network even wider.” We’re not talking networking in pinstripes in a monochrome office. This is more likely to be a morning coffee in parkas and Uggs after drop-off. But where mums’ coffee mornings might once have revolved around the kids, the dog and where to find a decent plumber, they are now just as likely to include how to up your SEOs, drive traffic to your site, how a pitch is going for a new client, or results for the inbound marketing push. Among my immediate group of school friends there are senior editors, publishers, TV producers, account managers, lawyers and heads of charities. Just last week I was discussing a how to sell a brand with another mum, a lawyer and branding expert with one of the world’s largest

drinks companies. Women have always been collaborative and involved with each other – but in some cases this has shifted out of the home and into the workplace. And it’s not just women taking advantage. Just as mothers have got more involved in the working world, dads are more involved with their kids and will often be at the school gates and at sports matches and this can lead to all sorts of networking opportunities. “It’s all about the school gate mate,” says Jonny. A partner at a City law firm with four children at prep schools in north London, he says many a valuable client has been snagged through school contacts, because it’s particularly easy for Alpha-male men to socialize at London’s most sought-after preps. “It’s a relaxed and natural way of meeting people. This is because you are already in the club – you are at the school so you have proved you are successful enough to have afforded it in the first place, so the guards come down and you can be genuinely matey.” He points out it’s also “a stage of life thing”– when children are at

73 Chis_March17_Education.indd 73

primary school, parents tend to fit the 35-45 age bracket – they are doing well but yet to peak careerwise. “It’s a very dynamic phase professionally,” he says. What starts out as men comparing how rich and successful they are “ends up being collaborative and supportive – sort of like NCT meets the boardroom,” he says. When he went through a turbulent work patch, he found the interest and concern of other dads at his children’s schools genuinely helpful. Sport matches are a brilliant place to talk shop; men chat easily and openly when there is sport in the background. At a recent football match Jonny found himself talking to a fellow dad “about how much he makes and how much he takes home. I would never have a conversation like that with a partner at work or a client,” he says. The professional tribes you will meet depends very much on the type of school and where in London you live. Bankers, VCs, private equity boys and corporate lawyers will be at prep schools in Notting Hill and Holland Park, Hampstead, Chelsea, Dulwich and so on. Actors and illustrious media folk slightly further afield and many of London’s best state schools attract big names from the creative industries. The world of private schools used to be riddled with the English disease of class. One big change in melting pot London at least is that social networking at the school gates has become “very international and meritocratic. It’s not about who you know and much more about what you do,” says Jonny. Of course, no one is recommending you choose a school for your child based on how it will improve your job prospects – but with nepotism and the old-school tie less of a workable option, it might be worth considering when you fill in those forms. ◆

EDUCATION / REVISION

Course work

Easter Revision courses can deliver excellent results – as long as you choose the right one Wo r d s j a m e s b a r t o n

things to all people. There are those who work more effectively in a group-based environment and others who find that distracting. There are those who would find the practice-based element most crucial to their understanding of the subject and there are those who need more tuition. Easter Revision should certainly never be used as a replacement for teaching. For those requirements it would probably be more prudent to consider private tuition. So, how to choose an Easter Revision course? Although it sounds obvious, the first thing is to find a course that meets

ENOUGH EMPHASIS cannot be placed ON THE IMPORTANCE OF

board-specific courses

R

evision’ is a bit of a misleading word. In the modern A-Level landscape, ‘revision’ is best applied as a continuous practice throughout a course and not, as most students believe, in the last few weeks leading up to examinations. If this best practice is missing, however, then what are your options to improve? Enter the Easter Revision Courses. An overcrowded market place in which students and their parents are spoilt for choice on providers. When determining the value of a course, parents and students are advised to ascertain its benefit to each individual.

There can be an unfounded stigma attached to Easter Revision courses (a feeling that asking for help somehow highlights a failing in preparation). The reality is quite different and the movement of the past five years or more has shown the demographic to be at the high end of the grade bracket. Every student learns in a different way and therefore it is impossible for an Easter Revision course to be all

75 NH_March17_MPW.indd 75

your requirements. The differences between examination questions can often vary starkly from board to board. At A-Level particularly, enough emphasis cannot be placed on the importance of board-specific courses. Tutors should be able to identify any gaps and areas of perceived weakness. The course should offer a balance between theory and practice while not claiming to re-teach the entire syllabus in one week. Perhaps the biggest indictment of the examination system is that it does not always allow the most naturally gifted or intelligent to flourish but rather it rewards those who also know how to pass the examinations. That is really what a revision course should focus on: how to apply information to the examination itself. So when should you do an Easter Revision course? When you need an extra level of focus and reassurance before those all-important examinations. After all, confidence, as well as content, is king. ◆ James Barton, Director of Recruitment, MPW London; mpw.ac.uk

tter’s Holt is a lovingly fitted Mongolian yurt, set in its own secluded field. But don't confuse this with camping, because there's no danger of being cold, wet or uncomfortable here. The beautiful yurt, with its cosy, hand-painted interior, sleeps four in comfortable beds, equipped with a wood burner plus a separate kitchen in an outhouse that also incudes a fully equipped bathroom (with hot water on demand, of course). There are lots of blankets and everything you could possibly need is supplied, thanks to owner Alan and his wife, who have created this beautiful spot as a labour of love. Roughing it this is not. There’s full privacy thanks to the secluded location: essentially, you have an entire field and a bit of forest to yourself, plus your own stream (bring wellies). There's a large dining area, a barbecue and a firepit.

Country life

Hampton Manor combines the country experience with a Michelin star Wo r d s e v e h e r b e r t

H

ampton Manor is part of Birmingham’s successful foodie story. Last year was a memorable year for the hotel’s restaurant Peel’s with a Michelin Star, the Michelin Welcome and Service Award, and four AA Rosettes awarded in the space of a week. Peel’s is home to simple dishes cooked using seasonal ingredients and modern cooking techniques under Head Chef Rob Palmer. The hotel is home to a vast kitchen garden and the menus include A La Carte and four and seven course tasting menus. Food alone is a great reason to make a visit.

Located in the picturesque village of Hampton-in-Arden served by direct trains from London, Hampton Manor is a serious weekend destination. Hampton Manor’s most famous resident was Sir Frederick Peel, son of 19th century Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel who established the police force. Frederick was a proud industrialist and his home reflected his beliefs. ‘Industria’ is engraved on the staircase and a crest of a lion, carved in myriad locations across the building, features a weaving shuttle. Its decorative details impose a fascinating contradiction between the celebration of industry and a focus on craftsmanship, advocated by William

81 NH_March17_HAMPTON MANOR.indd 81

Morris and the Arts and Crafts trend of the time. Today, Hampton Manor is an independent family-run business with 15 individually designed bedrooms and suites that exude the warmth and hospitality of a luxurious country house retreat, but the place has the feel of a super relaxed members club. Built in 1855, Hampton Manor had fallen into decline when husband and wife team James and Fjona Hill embarked on an extensive 18 month restoration project with the support of James’s parents who themselves had worked in hospitality. Fjona Hill acted as interior designer, drawing on her photographic background and sharp visual eye to ensure her first hotel project was a triumph. She transformed the Manor with a unique concept that drew on the building’s original features as inspiration. Stained glass windows, magnificent oak panelling and a staircase finished with intricate carvings are vestiges of the Arts and Crafts style of the period. The beautiful manicured gardens inspire colours and textures. Victorian design features are juxtaposed with luxurious materials and contemporary finishes. ◆

What makes this area so special? Kensington has everything; parks, shops and a fascinating mix of properties. It never stays the same and there is always something new around the corner.

Expert Advice

DISTILLERY WHARF

Prior to the SDLT changes in April 2016, we saw a lot of buyto-let investors in the market enjoying the yields Fulham could offer and also the certain capital growth. These buyers have now all but vanished but it’s reassuring to learn that our market is not propped up by them. There is enough demand from domestic and European owner occupiers that prices have not softened as much as a lot of people expected.

W 6 , £ 75 0 PW This contemporary two bedroom apartment is situated on the fifth floor at Distillery Wharf, one of the popular phases at the development, Fulham Reach. The apartment comprises a large open planned reception area with space for dining, a modern kitchen with integrated appliances and breakfast bar.

How long have you been in this area? I have operated in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea for the last 7 years, specialising in the sale and acquisition of residential property. What are your favourite

properties right now? Two incredible lateral apartments we have for sale in Cedar House and Wynnstay Gardens; both are within close proximity to the new Design Museum which has gained international acclaim.

Where is best to discover culture?

Market predictions for the coming months?

The Royal Albert Hall has to be top of the list, along with the V&-A, Science Museum and Natural History Museum. Holland Park is steeped in history so worth a look too.

We expect to see an uplift in new instructions as we approach the busy spring market, coupled with an increase in transaction levels as buyers take full advantage of low mortgage rates which won’t be around forever!

Which are the best schools? We have so many but Our Lady of Victories, Holland Park School and Thomas London Day School are amongst the most sought-after.

Michael Caine was a partner in the business which opened in 1976 and, at its zenith during the late 1970s and 1980s, was the place to be seen. Each day up to 700 diners a day would pass through its doors. Langan’s Brasserie continues today even though its founder died in 1988 aged just 42. His former office on Maddox Street, which is a five-minute walk from the restaurant, has been converted into flats by Amazon. Property and a four-bedroom, twofloor penthouse remains for sale, at £5.25 million. More information from Knight Frank (020 3811 2378).

o you remember when Damien Hirst and his fellow Young British Artists or YBAs were all over the papers, and the British contemporary art market boomed? Hirst became almost instantly world famous for exhibiting a 14-ft dead tiger shark preserved in formaldehyde. None of this would have been possible without the patronage of former advertising man Charles Saatchi, who opened a gallery in 1985. Its first incarnation, in North London, was a former paint factory and is where the first show, called Freeze, was mounted during 1992 featuring many of the YBAs and included Hirst’s infamous shark. The Saatchi gallery has since moved on, and the site was redeveloped recently into luxury apartments. One is for sale at the moment with three bedrooms, three bathrooms and decked roof terrace. It’s for sale at £3.65 million via Savills (020 3043 3600).

f you fancy literally rubbing shoulders with the rich, powerful and famous, then head for Albany House, an extraordinary block of flats featured in several famous novels that has also been a celebrity hangout for over two hundred years. The property, which is off Piccadilly in central London, is currently home to actor Terence Stamp and photographer Lord Snowdon. Built in 1774 as a mansion for a debauched but blue-blooded family before being redeveloped into 69 smaller ‘chambers’ in 1803 and described by Country Life magazine as ‘one of London’s most exclusive addresses’. Until recently flats could only be sold to people vetted by a committee while pets, children and photography are still not allowed. Agents Strutt & Parker (020 7235 9959) has a two-bedroom, one reception room apartment for sale within the building on a 20-year lease for £1.35m.

his modernist block of flats is where cross-dressing stand-up comedian, actor and ultra-marathon runner Eddie Izzard once lived while he got his career off the ground. Pullman Court is a Grade II* listed building and was constructed in 1936 to a design by Frederick Gibberd which is considered to be one of the finest modernist buildings in the UK. For several years until 1997, Izzard lived in a one-bedroom apartment within the complex which at one point he shared with former Labour MP and Housing Minister Keith Hill. Pullman Court is in Streatham Hill, South London and is where Izzard spent many years honing his comedic skills. hen actress Keira Knightley was filming 2005’s bonnet buster Pride & Prejudice she was living in a three-bedroom apartment she’d bought as a London bolthole. The property, which is on the third and fourth floors of a Georgian terrace on Hyde Park Square in central London, is where she and Pride & Prejudice co-star Rupert Friend got it on after the two met during filming. The couple went on to be an item, dating from 2005 until 2010. But such hectic work schedules took their toll and, after reportedly hardly ever seeing each other as they worked at different ends of the globe, not to mention the attention of paparazzi, they split. The apartment where their doomed love affair played out can now be rented for £1,250 a week via agent Knight Frank (020 7871 5070).

elieve it or not, I originally wanted to be a police officer. I had always loved property, but I had never considered pursuing it any further than my sofa, watching back-to-back episodes of Grand Designs. My grandfather built beautiful home with a fabulous swimming pool for him and my grandmother. My parents followed suit; buying an empty patch of land and building their dream house. I think, without realising, I became captivated by property and property development from seeing the joy that my grandparents and parents’ homes brought them every day. After university, I moved away from the idea of becoming a police officer and started considering other careers. I knew that I didn’t want to be stuck in an office, but wanted to be out and about, meeting as many different people as possible, and I knew I wanted to move to London. Coming from a sleepy town in Norfolk, my sights were always set on the city. I’d only visited the capital a handful of times, I had no family or friends here and barely knew my way around, but I was drawn to the excitement. The buzz of busy streets, the bright lights from towering buildings, the bustling crowds of people, it was like

nothing I had ever experienced before. I came across a position with Featherstone Leigh, and it just seemed to click. Being an estate agent had been in the back of my mind for a while, and I knew I loved property, so I decided to go for it – I got the job, moved to London with my partner, and happily it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. Five years on and I’m now lettings manager at the Fulham branch of Featherstone Leigh. I love how dynamic my job is – the lettings market is exciting and fast-paced, so I am lucky enough to work with a wealth of different people each day. Fulham has such a diverse community, meaning you never know who’s going to walk through the door or what sort of home they want. This allows me to work with so many different properties, from one bedroom flats to five bedroom houses – which makes every day enjoyable! Fulham has always had a very strong lettings market. People flock here for the area's excellent connections to central London, and because it’s bursting with bars, restaurants, and cafés, as well as gorgeous parks and riverside walks. I’ve noticed an increase in young professionals in the area over the past five years, but there are still plenty of families and couples. I think people are so fond of

“I THINK PEOPLE ARE SO FOND OF THE AREA BECAUSE THERE'S A REAL SENSE OF COMMUNITY AROUND HERE" the area because there’s a real sense of community around here, which can be quite hard to find in London. At the moment, my partner and I are now following in the footsteps of my grandparents and parents and are completely renovating our flat. We got married in December, so the project was postponed for a few months, but thankfully we’re back on track now and only have the kitchen left to finish! I spend all of my time at work looking at so many beautiful properties, so I cannot wait for all the building work to be finished and finally have a wonderful home of my own. ◆

PROPERTY / PROFILE INTERVIEW

Dan Gray THE 27-YEAR-OLD £80M HOMES BUILDER

D

an Gray joined a building firm as a trainee at 17 but now constructs some of London’s most prestigious new homes developments. So how did he do it? Absolutely London decided to find out and our first port of call was developer Bellway Homes which, we discovered, employs an extraordinary person called Dan Gray.
He’s 27 years old and joined the company ten years ago as a trainee but is now one of its site project managers.
While most of his peer group are working their way up the ranks, Dan is now one of the most senior construction workers in London, responsible for sites with budgets running into the tens of millions. We just had to meet him. How did you get to be successful so young? I’ve been with Bellway for ten years and started out as a trainee, studying firstly at college for a BTEC Diploma and then progressing to a degree in Construction Management at Anglia Ruskin university, working four days a week and studying one day a week. When I first started out it was a trainee role doing all the jobs that the site managers and project managers didn’t want to do like the paperwork, but it taught me how to run an office and get a site up and running. From there I progressed from that role to different housing sites including traditional timber frame houses and flats and then on to more high-end spec properties in London, which are reinforced concrete frames - so taller, much more complex buildings on a bigger scale and featuring

higher build costs. My first role as a project manager was at New Festival Quarter in Poplar where I started out as a site manager and then got promoted. I ran Phase II of the scheme which was the final block of 175 two and three bedroom apartments and three- bedroom penthouse units in a big tower. The whole site was 510 units and took five years to build and cost £75-£80m to build. Then we started a scheme in Nine Elms, Vauxhall, where I also worked as a project manager before moving over to The River Gardens in Greenwich, which is right on the river. What do you do all day? My role is to oversee the organisation of the development and ensure that its construction sticks to the program, and that

we get what we need when we need it. My other big responsibilities is health and safety on site. We can have 170 people working on site during a busy day so I’ve got to ensure they’re all in the right place at the right time when we need them. I also have to deal with all the subcontractors’ project managers and brief them on what we are expecting from them, which they will then relay back to their employees on site. How long do these developments take to build? For example here at River Gardens we’re working on Phase I which includes 170 apartments, we started on demolition six months ago, and we’ll probably be finished by 2020 so all in all they take three to four years. What’s changed the most in construction since you started out? The way that builders get involved in local communities; that’s changed. And I think builders concentrate a lot more about their customer these days. What are you most proud of so far? One of my developments, New Festival Quarter, I won a Pride in the Job award from the NHBC for the final phase there for two years in a row. u
