Maryland Messenger State Director’s Message

Answering the Call of Zeta Through Leadership and Service

The Sorority Hymn of Zeta Phi Beta says it best, "When Zeta Calls, We'll Answer One and All!" The Call of Zeta is one that requires multiple and frequent replies that are embedded on the founding principles that our Pearls established over 94 years ago. The essence, soul and spirit of Zeta is Service Through Leadership. As college-educated women, our Pearls were leaders on the campus of Howard University who understood that their purpose and destiny was to serve their local community by providing awareness, enlightenment and resources to those in need. Although their vision addressed the ills of their society back in 1920, it has expanded to provide service that impacts the human condition of all globally. As we begin the 2014-2015 sorority year, I am pleased to return from our Biannually Boule' Conference this summer as your Director of the Old Line State. I am looking forward to the next two years as we go higher and deeper in our walk of upholding and promoting the ideals and principles of the sorority as we continue to Be a Friend to Man through Service. I wish you all much success as we continue "Building Upon the Principles of Zeta While Blazing New Paths while Making Maryland Marvelous, the Atlantic Region Awesome and Zeta Finer!” Please enjoy this special edition of the Maryland Messenger as we reflect and celebrate our accomplishments from 2012-2014 and create new successes for this year and beyond. Be Blessed and ETJ...Enjoy The Journey!

Reaffirmation On Friday, July 18, 2014, the Sorors of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and the Brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. gathered at the Washington Hilton to recommit collectively to the oath they took individually. It was a historic moment as the International Presidents Mary Breaux Wright (Zeta Phi Beta Sorority) and Brother Jonathan Mason (Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity) led the audience in the pledge. Immediately following the beautiful songs of inspiration by Phi Beta Sigma Men’s Choir, Brother Mason gave an inspirational message reminding both Zetas and Sigmas to live the oath they took when they became members.

Boule Opening Ceremony Greek unity was in full bloom as the National Pan Hellenic Council came out in support of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.’s Grand Boule. The opening ceremony began with an all ZETA military color guard. Soror gracefully presented the color and the audience sang a resounding edition of the Star Spangled Banner followed by the Black National Anthem, Lift Every Voice and Sing. This provided a sense of pride and being to all those who were in attendance. Laughter filled the air as fellow Greek Presidents/Representatives brought greetings and offered playful challenges. As the evening continued, Washington, DC Mayor Vincent Gray expressed gratitude and excitement about the “beautiful ladies of the Royal Blue” being in DC and encouraged sorors to support DC businesses.

Workshops Maryland Sorors were on FIRE!!!!! Sorors from the Magnificent State of Maryland exhibited zeal and excitement as they served as presenters for various workshops throughout the conference. Soror Cheryl D. Brown, Omicron Chi Zeta Chapter, presented a powerful workshop entitled, “How to Become a Well-Balanced Leader” which provided information on how to balance your personal, work and Zeta lives. Soror Cheryl D. Brown gives guidance for being a well-balanced leader.

This Boule stressed the importance of improving your personal and Zeta images and ensured sorors were given useful information, through several mini-workshops developed under the general title, “How to be Finer than you are Today.” Sorors Shirlene Chase (Delta Zeta Zeta), Willa Reaves Watson (Eta Pi Zeta), and Dr. Jalene Chase-Sands (Delta Zeta Zeta), presented the interactive “Think Finer” workshop which built upon the ideal of Finer Womanhood. Soror Teraleen Campbell (Tau Delta Zeta) was one of three presenters for the “Act Finer” workshop which provided alternative ways of handling issues and problem solving, while setting standards and acting finer. Zeta Programmatic Innovations/Roundtables were held to provide an open forum for Sorors to discuss various Zeta initiatives. Soror Rosalyn Hannibal-Booker spear-headed the “Collaboration Service Project for the Homeless Female Veterans”, Soror Betsy D. Simon led the “Zeta Healthy Aging Partnership (ZHAP): Self Empowering Network for Older Adults” and Soror Malica Flemming presented on Zeta Imagine in regards to chapter websites. Both workshops were at room capacity and our Maryland Sorors provided great insight.

Zeta Business Sessions Zetas are about Business. It was delightful to see the beautifully and professionally dressed sorors of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. conducting business and making decisions that will aid in moving Zeta forward. The body reviewed over 100 constitutional changes, accepted honorary members and moved the financial business in a timely and efficient manner. Grand Wright gave the State of the Sorority report by providing information that added the constituency in making well informed decisions.

Most Inspirational Boule Moments Soror Laura Charles-Horne (Tau Delta Zeta Chapter) “The most inspirational portion of the Boule was the Reaffirmation Program. It was so profound and moving with over 4,000 brothers and sisters together. Also being able to meet and take a picture with Soror Francis Faithful because in my neophyte year, I took a picture with her mother and was able to able to show it to her and that has me in tears.” Soror Prudence Henderson (Mu Xi Zeta Chapter) “The most inspiring part of Boule was when Brother Mason reiterated the bond between Zeta and Sigma. There are so many times you don’t see that bond but it was reignited as he spoke how we are suppose to be there one for the other. He made me believe it!

Soror Krystal Brown (Chi Beta Zeta Chapter) “The most inspiration part of the 2014 Boule was when the sorors and frat gathered together to reaffirm ourselves and the constitutional bond between the Brotherhood and Sisterhood. I think it was a great representation to show that Zetas and Sigmas are working together to make sure we are building our communities individually and building our communities nationally.” Soror Tymeerah Butts-Grandy (Tau Eta Zeta Chapter) “The most inspirational moment was when we did our rededication and we actually reflected over the oath. It meant a lot to be one year in the sorority and seeing all the sisterhood coming together and rededicate to the sorority.”

Soror Robin Bowman (Alpha Zeta Chapter) “My favorite part of the Boule was actually getting the business of Zeta done.”

Soror Dawn Kemp (Lambda Gamma Zeta Chapter) “My most memorable moment was the burning of the mortgage.”

Parliamentarian Pearl The following acronym serves as a guide for preparing meeting agendas -

MRS. SUN RONR 11th page 353

That stands for :

Minutes Reports of officers, boards and standing committees Special or Ad Hoc Committee Reports (Ex: Founders' Day Luncheon) Special Orders (Matters that were previously assigned special priority Ex: Atlantic Regional Exec Board Meeting)

Unfinished business and General Orders (Matters from the preceding meeting or were scheduled for the present meeting Ex: election report and bylaws report) New business (Introduces new items of business or any matters not disposed of under Unfinished Business or General Orders or entertains new motions. This is not the time to discuss what you think or want. Remember, no motion - no debate.) Many societies also include a heading such as For the Good of Zeta, General Good and Welfare or Open Forum. This is where announcements and prayer requests should go. Also, call to order is not to be included as the first item of business on the meeting agenda. It is simply to be done, but is not considered as part of the order of business. Note: it is fine to include the items that are peculiar to our organization, such as the devotional and action items. Lastly, flexibility is not a parliamentary or RONR term.

TDZ Serves During the Summer Tau Delta Zeta Chapter has remained busy serving the community this Summer. The chapter participated in the annual National Night Out on Tuesday, August 5. National Night Out began in 1984 as an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, policecommunity partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. Tau Delta Zeta has participated in the event in the city of Laurel for the past four years. This year, a Z-HOPE Activity for youth and voter registration drive was conducted. On Saturday, August 23, TDZ connected with community partner Sisters 4 Sisters, Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Gamma Pi Chapter to present a Back to School Celebration for needy families. The event included distribution of nearly 200 back packs and school supplies. TDZ sorors conducted a voter registration drive and Get Out the Vote Efforts. They also spearheaded a clothing drive and coordinated a clothing boutique wherein attendees were able to select clothing, school uniforms and other accessories for the entire family. In addition, breakout sessions were conducted on bullying for students and education for parents. One of the highlights of the day featured three Omegas, employed by local police departments, sharing tips on how best to interact with the police and avoid situations. This segment was added because of the various incidents that have transpired throughout the country involving police and people of color. The Omegas conveyed that they are indeed dedicated to protect and serve. That particular session yielded great participation from students and parents. The overall event was a huge success.
