Group WorkďźšThe Riverside My Task : I am responsible for grasping the overall design, acting as the group leader. My primary work is field research, regional analysis, status analysis and general layout.
Challenges This was the first time to challenge a regional planning, during which we faced lots of difficulties and arguments. However, through our efforts, by resulting the adviser, investigating local information, learning urban planning regulations, we eventually complete the project.
Open Space System & Commercial Space Layout Regional Analysis Along the Huangpu River The south extended belt of open space will become the first waterfront green corridor of Shanghai and the best testimonial of better city, better life. Our site is located at the beginning of the green corridor.

Positioning of Xuhui District
Appraisal of the Present Situation Problems: Land use rate is low. Large area used as parking lot is lack of planning and needs to be improved in aesthetic terms.
Problems: Constructions below the second-class quality affect the street scenery and seem out of step with the surrounding areas of the business district. Historical and Cultural District
Problems: Greening of these two blocks is not sufficient. Especially the street green belt is difficult to provide shade for foot passengers.
Bio-Tech and Medical District * Xujiahui commercial center Commercial and Cultural District * Shanghai stadium * Longhua cemetery New Tech Development Distrct
Riverfront Commercial and Residential District * Shanghai south ralway station * Shanghai arboretum
Problems: Factory buildings and dormitory buildings built long time ago are prone to security problems.
Modern Transportation and Commercial District
Nanpu Train Station Garden Repair the old locomotives which have been treasured for years, and place the transport system left over by the history in the Garden, in order to forever memorize the joint Xuhui Yanjiang water and land transportation system. The sea bridge The sea bridge was originally a coal conveyer belt built in Beipiao dock in 1984 and is recovered and strengthened by modern technology. With tall, orange tower cranes connected to each end of it, it becomes a distinctive landscape. The 420-meter-long sky-view corridor is now the only observatory across the Huangpu River.
Urban Municipal Planning Problems: Waste recycling factory needs strict management. The recycling cars congested the door area and also affect the road traffic for foot passengers and non-motorized vehicles
Tower Crane Square Group The old tower crane system has been fully repaired and constituted the nodes of the Garden. Problems: Dispute between the local residents and the government about relocation and compensation led to the problems of prolonged project schedule, piling up of construction waste and serious pollution to the environment.
Creative Market Plaza Facing the Huangpu River, the U stand and nearly 1000 square meters of skateboarding area are located at the Xiaomuqiao Road Intersection.

Status Quo of transportation
Sections of the Buildings
• The phenomenon of blocked streets is serious. Original planning of roads is interfered by the newly built buildings. Some streets are under construction. Urban Expressway
• The planning of streamline is unreasonable. Greenland along the riverside and the main area of gathered people are completely separated.
Main Road Secondary Road Branch Interior Paths Inaccessible
• Flexibility of moving is weak. It is difficult to reach a certain place.
Blocked
* Looking from the east of Huangpu River
Status Quo of Land Use • The land use mainly consists of commercial, office, cultural and residential lands. C1 Administrating Office
• Among all lands, public service area is about 62.53 hectares and residential area is about 38.32 hectares, which acounts for 34.7% and 21.3% of total land. Greenlands are about 33.84 hectares and road square land is about 40.5 hectares, which accounts for 18.8% and 22.5% of total land. • The land use rate is low, especially in the north-east areas. The warehouses and parking lots once used during Expo are now wasted.
C2 Commercial Finance
1. The buildings located from the old city to the riverside area fluctuate in terms of building height, which lack the sense of rhythm. The building height of central buildings is obviously low, while the height of the left and right side is high.
C6 Education & Research C7 Historical Building G Green Land S3 Car Parking R3 Third-class Residence R4 Forth-class Residence U Public Facilities W Storage
2. Awaiting relocation and reconstruction areas that turned into ruins, standing in the modern buildings, are extremely awkward.

Proposal 1. Connect the residential zone with the cinnercial district by creating a Green Civic Belt that establishes a new identity for the city. 2. Connect people with nature by creating a vegetated riverfront and spaces to interact with and learn about water. 3. Connect the community with its riverfront by enhancing connections to the city and responding to existing, adjacent and proposed landuses. 4. Connect the past, present and future by re-interpreting existing industrial, historical and commercial landuses into contemporary activities and by story telling narratives woven into the landscape. 5. Connect cultures together by creating a new community address in shanghai as a healthy place to work, live and play.

Weakness:
Strength:
The governance of Jiuli River fails to conbine with urban development, which causes low utility and economical efficiency in riverside areas.
Existing water landscape resources.
WATER LEVEL CHANGES
Certain ecological bases are prone to reformation.
Massive industry plants nearby have damaged the environment and landscapes.
Ebb
The railway station built in Jiuli River area brings foreign foot traffic. Drought Period
Nearby villages together with some apartments and campuses that have been built or are in progress bring sufficient local foot traffic.
Large number of livestock create feces and fermented animal feed that pollutes surrounding environment.
Normal
Flood Period
Plantation only flourishes on the riverbanks yet remains a mess without proper care.
CURRENT Flood
The area is close to a railroad in use.
PROPOSED
Opportunity:
Provide centralized area to rest, play and enjoy for nearby residents. Clean up the waterway and re-study hydraulic requirements of Jiuli River from development and utilization perspective. Try to set stage for landscape construction and create economical as well as social benefits.
Majority of nearby residents are less-educated farmers who care not much about environment and landscape maintenance. River landscape requires long-term cleaning and maintenance.
Make the area suitable for rainwater collection and drainage.

Threat:
Expand the river while meeting hydraulic requirements and transform it into ecological wetlands. Protect river corners to prevent floods from crushing nearby construction lands.

According to earlier topographical designs, trestles are built on low-lying lands between the highlands in case of flooding. After the positions of trestles are allocated, roads are built to connect them. Plus the walking trails in the highland forests, a complete internal transport system is built. To prevent flooding in the low-lying Jiuli River area, some lands are adjusted into highland, wetlands or smallscale waters, thus enriching its geographical features while maintaining the original water use. Since Jiuli River serves as a major branch of Tai Lake which runs from west to east, the river is properly widened as required.

Plenty of emerged plants and hygrophilous C shrubs are grown near the water and submerged plants like algae are grown in the water. Among the highlands however, ground cover and shrubs common in the Yangtz River Delta are planted. 5.0 Hydrophytes are designed to purify water resources (Jiuli River and rain water) and to provide an ecological environment.
