Jean-Michel Basquiat Gallery Date Type Location

Summer 2010 Architecture New York City, New York

The gallery for Jean-Michel Basquiat is reminiscent of his work. He was a neoexpressionist artist, who began his career living on the streets, and a graffiti artist. His gallery, located at 19th St. and 10th Ave., is a gallery for the public, the people of the street. It is a public space that bleeds into the fabric of urbanity, and is interactive as an art piece within the city.

Summer 2010 Architecture New Orleans, LA

The design is for low-income families in the Broadmoor District in New Orleans. The competition called for the house to be LEED certified, and under $100K. We combined two contextual residential features, the front porch, and the shotgun-style house into a contemporary satellite housing unit for the Broadmoor area. The project took first place in the Midwest Regionals.

concePtual study - italy study aBroad Date Spring 2011 Type Conceptual Study Location Santa Chiara, Castiglion Fiorentino The time spent in Italy spurred an interest in structural systems. Italy is filled with the ‘building blocks’ of architecture: regular systems that create space. But over time, the original function of the building changed, and a new ‘irregular’ system came into place. These studies are a response to the irregular systems noticed while in Italy.

School For the newly Blind Date Type Location

Spring 2012 Architecture 103 N 3rd St, Kansas City, MO

The school for the newly blind, my thesis project, derives from the initial question: How does architecture have a presence without being seen? The question is explored through dealing with issues concerning how the blind interact with their environment.

Program Analysis The main issues of a School for the Newly Blind are the cognitive map of a blind person, and the sensual experience. The key parts to a cogntive map of an individual depends on internal information, the ability to recognize information, analyze information, and store it, and external information, the current state of things and tasks to be accomplished. The sensual experience is broken down into how a blind person interacts with a building, what is touched, heard, and smelled. These key factors aid the blind in creating a map of spatial envrionments, and inform the design of how to enhance the experience.
