VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS | PORTFOLIO

Hi there! My name is Zhané and I’m an observer, adventurer, and lover of art and stories. I started my creative career as a self-taught painter (and you can still find me with a brush in hand on most days). However, my journey through the field of visual communications has taught me how to express myself and connect with others through different mediums.

Annual Report I designed Global Carolina’s first combined annual report. This report includes a comprehensive account of the activities from all five of Global Carolina’s programs for the 2019-2020 academic year.

INFOGRAPHICS Infographics were a crucial part of the annual report. The spread on the right is an example of the designs I came up with to display the information.

L.I.F.E. Argentina When my study abroad trip was canceled due to COVID-19, I decided to complete a virtual internship abroad instead. Here is some of the branded design work that I created as a Project Analyst intern for LIFE Argentina, a non-profit based in Buenos Aires.

The colors for my design are based on a vibrant barrio in Buenos Aires named “La Boca.” The patchwork is based on the brightly painted buildings that line the neighborhood.

Tattoo Trillionaires Tattoo Trillionaires is a tattoo shop located in Columbia, SC. I was tasked with redesigning the shop’s logo and providing new marketing materials for the shop to use. CREATIVE PROCESS

When approaching this redesign, my aim wa to create a logo that was modern and sleek. The word “trillionaires” suggests that the qua of their work is above average, so I wanted focus on that.

First, I brainstormed a list of words to describ this business. These included: My Redesign

MERCH I created a shirt with the logo on it because I believe that clothes would be the best form of advertisement for a tattoo artist, especially while they are at work. The logo design demands attention on its own, so I wanted to keep the shirt design simple.

BUSINESS CARD DESIGN The cards feature personalized designs for each of the artists. These designs include: • The tattoo artist’s “shop” name • An exact line drawing of one of the artist’s previous tattoo designs (I illustrated the design below based on one of the artist’s designs). • Individual social media information (in this case, Instagram)

Garnet & Black Magazine For my last issue as photo editor for the magazine, I had the honor of designing and painting the cover for the Spring 2021 print publication. This cover is special to me because it’s the first time I have ever had a painting of mine viewed by such a large audience. The painting took

Education Abroad During my time as a Graphic Design & Marketing intern at the University of South Carolina’s Education Abroad Office, I created branded marketing materials to promote study abroad resources to students on campus. These materials include logos, flyers, posters, banner ads, and much more. This internship also helped me discover my love for international experiences.

SOCIAL MEDIA These are Facebook and Instagram ads that I created for the Education Abroad Fair.

Hair Story A collection of images that highlights and celebrates the diversity of “Black girl hair.” This was shot during the summer when I didn’t have access to an actual studio, so I got creative and turned my apartment living room into one (using an LED ring light and a solid backdrop). This gallery was created as visual aid to a story published in Garnet & Black Magazine that speaks aims to change the narrative surrounded textured hair.

Taking Up Space Taking Up Space is a photo story that highlights what it looks like for Black artists to create in their environments. This is one of my favorite projects because it stemmed from my curiosity of what “taking up space” would look like for me as an artist. As a photographer, getting to know the subject and the context of the space we’re in are both very important to me (if time allows). I wanted to display each of their stories authentically, so I spent almost two hours with each subject. During this time, I learned about their creative processes, how they were doing at that present moment and their overall goals.

Democratic Primaries I covered the South Carolina Democratic presidential primaries for the 2020 presidential election. I was able to capture photos of the rallies hosted in support of candidates Sen. Bernie Sanders and entrepreneur Tom Steyer. I used two lenses to capture these shots: 70-200mm & 300mm.

Product Photography For this project, I chose to use some old tubes of paint and a few of my paintbrushes. Using pieces of black cardboard sheets and an artificial ring light, I tried to play around with different angles and placements.
