Complying with the natural landscape is our prior design strategy in this project. Because of the particular functions and programming for designing an embassy, it should be both defensive (security use) and transparent. Our strategy is to let the natural landscape — small hills around the site — govern the embassy defensive gesture, and to utilize the original terrain dominate the defensive stance. The hills, which locate along the direction of the main road, could provide the natural defense for our embassy in Stockholm, at the same time to make buildings more discreet and humble, thus the defensive posture is no longer directly coming out. On this site, buildings do follow the nature. The large parking lot, whose roof is served as the continuity to the landscape, is put underground and combines the natural environment with its defensive requirement. By also responding to the design guidelines — to embody architecture design which will represent the U.S to the world as a welcoming and open society while also maintaining appropriate security provisions requirements, we architects are trying to convey to the local community with a sense of openness and liberation and a new image of the embassy architecture.

According to the guideline from the U.S. State Department, there are four potential sites. We need to compare these sites, and chose the best site to do embassy design. Here are some reasons why we chose site IV for our design: 1. The chosen site is near the original U.S. embassy; 2. The site is in the embassy district, which means it has a closer relation concerning the diplomatic issues; 3. Appropriate distance from the city center, traffic is relatively easier and more convenient to deal with the local government affairs; 4. Near a film institute campus, functionality and human scale, it is more appropriate of the embassy building; 5. Located in high-income areas, fast commercial development, and it is very convenient for the embassy staff; 6. larger venues (27518 ㎡ ), architectural designs for a larger operating space. 7. The site is located at the end of one of the city major axis, lacks the connection to the urban fabric and natural environment; 8. The site itself is located near the large public green space that could provide the new embassy with a good natural scene; 9. Enough space for the future expansion.

The site is closely connected to the city, basically it has three major characteristics: the insertion of texture in the city fabric; the accessibility; the hospitable relations to the adjacent buildings. The surrounding context of this site is quite complex, since the adjacent buildings are drama school, local government office, residential district, TV company and an embassy district, also, the site is located at the east end of the city's main axis. So how to deal with the complex context is one of the prior issues of this design. The site is located in an urban area and nature area, so how to deal with this realation is another issue of this design.

Create the maximum volume of the New Office Building; Consider the height of surrounding buildings; The transverse edge of the NOB is facing towards the west in order to limited the sunshine duration and to conform to the vernacular architecture orientation. 5. Dividing the NOB into two parts, the consular building is served as the terminal of the consular entry sequence. The office building is behind the MCAC and connected by the NOB entrance plaza. 6. The creation of landscape: Cutting an "L" shape seam to enlighten the underground MSGR housing; The landscape garden facing the public park towards the east direction makes the embassy compound more accessible to the public.

This project is an architecture complex at Hudson Yard, New York City, it investigates on creating a new high-rise building typology by redefining the relationship between shared space and private space in contemporary architecture. The concept start with a question: Can we stack multiple community scale public space in one building, and organize different programs based on these different public layers? the project attempts to stay away from the vertical stacking condition in a typical tower typology and develop a new organizational system, which emphasizes horizontally and creating horizontal public space within building. By completely changing the typical organization of the high-rise building typology, the project aims to offer a new relationship between users and building and produce unexpected moments and new spatial conditions: the horizontally stacked public and private space. In result, the project challenges modern technology to make it possible while promote a new cultural development where the project is situated.

This project is the extension of Campbell Hall (School of Architecture, UVA) in Charlottesville, VA. It involves a new exhibition space, a new studio space, as well as a series of lecture rooms for Campbell hall. Conceptually, the project intends to invent a “cloud” feeling the lightness that captures the uniqueness of the new addition in both abstract and sensitive senses. It is also designed to create a unique semi-outdoor space to introduce the flexibility to campus public life. The site (the west side of Campbell hall specifically) is located on an iconic axis of the campus, which is between complicated elevation and landscape changes contexts. Architecturally, the new addition uses simple massing moves and structure itself to define space and to approach lightness, openness, and transparency. The consisting truss structure makes the main programs floating above the site, thus, creating a column-free flexible space for different types of events. The studio space, lecture rooms, and exhibition space are also defined by structure system and distribute vertically, which match the initially Campbell hall’s vertically program distribution. The façade system aims to let north and top natural light into the building, as well as control the west and south light as much as possible.

Thus, conceptually, the project intends to invent a "cloud" feeling the lightness that captures the uniqueness of the new addition in both abstract and sensitive senses.

05 CONTEMPLATION PAVILION Peace Pavilion In Memory of the Innocent Victims of War in Africa
Post-graduation Project 2019 Kaira Looro Architecture Competition Finalist Building Area: 300 ㎡ Location: Sedhiou, Senegal, Africa Group Work: Chenyu Zhang, Jingyuan Luo Role in Team: Conceptual Design, Diagrams, Digital Model, Master Plan, Plan, Section, Renderings Software:Rhino, V-Ray, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign
Water and river, in many cultures, represent time files or even time itself. In this project, the building area is super tiny, while luckily, the site is on the riverside, so conceptually the building is designed as a view frame to capture the tranquility from the river. This project is a central place for people to gather and spread awareness of the war. By approaching the pavilion from a framed pathway into an expansive space of renewal, the past, present, and future meet as art and prayer remind survivors of lost tales. Besides, the pavilion uses vernacular materials, has natural ventilation, and rainwater collecting systems. The eastside of exhibition space is softly blocking the view by the louver screen, and the supporting west sidewall is where the contemplative artwork hangs. The vertical open space between supporting wall and roof creates a perfect circulation system also brings in light into the interior space. The rainwater channel resists on the top of the soil slope, which is parallel to the roof's edge, sending rainwater into the water tank. This system makes the building zero energy cost and environmentally friendly.
Project Background
The area in question was scarred by the Casamance conflicts which, despite having ended approximately a decade ago, left an indelible stain on the community’s memory. Villages were burned to the ground and many families were forced to flee to other countries or cities in search of safety. As in the case of the aforementioned conflict, many are the humanitarian disasters that, due to cultural or religious differences or in an effort to grab Africa’s resources, have caused millions of deaths and created innumerable refugees. Many of these conflicts, despite their devastation, are ignored by the international community and occasionally, due to the lack of communication on the African continent, remain unknown even among African communities themselves. Past events, albeit tragic, must inspire us to build a world based on peace, equality, and solidarity. Commemorating the victims of African wars through the value of peace is a fundamental step in building an inclusive and cohesive society, so that such events may never be repeated in the future. The focus of this competition is to create a pavilion for the promotion of universal peace which inspires contemplation, reflection, and prayer for those who unjustly lost their lives. The pavilion will be open to the public and accessible to everyone. It will respect all cultures, genders, and religions.
