FLOATING CITIES: CAU MAU I Academic Work, AAP CORNELL Team Work : Catherine Joseph, Stefany Amasifuen, Debra Chan Duration: Sept - Nov 2014 Site: Ca Mau, Vietnam Tutor: Lily Chi, Jeremy Foster Introduction: The focus of this studio is on developing new housing prototypes that respond to the shifting and emerging conditions in Ca Mau, the most southerly, lowest-lying and rapidly-growing town in the Delta. Ca Mau’s present-day population of 215,000 is expected to climb to 500,000 by 2030. At the same time, its territory is threatened by extreme environmental challenges with regards to rising sea levels, saline intrusion and changing ecologies as new economies emerge.

Rural Metastasis I Housing + Productive Eco - District Academic Work, AAP CORNELL Individual Work Duration: Nov - Dec 2014 Site: Ca Mau, Vietnam Tutor: Lily Chi, Jeremy Foster Introduction: In respect of existing rural settlement conditions and agriculture-based economics, a strategy of Basin-wetland eco-system and new rural community will be implemented in rural area along main canals. Part of the rice field would be transformed to Basin or Wetland and canals could be reprogrammed to function as wetland for water purification, rainwater collection and flood resist. A hybrid rural community will bring new livelihood to the rural area where facilities and space for seasonal water market and country fair are provided. An easier and more safe access to water from private housing is created linking urban boulevard with water arteries. This plan focuses on the rural area where along the canal connecting to our urban concentration and neighbor concentration, which in our strategy will be reformed as a water boulevard for urban expansion. Communities are composed of collective housing by tenancy and private single family houses, where a better microclimate is created with water and wetland system. The idea is to relocate the land loss peasants and create a water-based eco-community habit in adapt to the process of urbanization. In a long run, to create resettlement cluster mode for more locations.

Rural Community Structure Reconstruct

Community structure concept is to change the existing fishbone settlement pattern where the waterfront is seriously threaten by fluctuating waving and floods. By carving into the waterfront land to form a water square and using the soil to elevated ground level, the water front is elongated and more housing could gain access to water by aligning around the water edge to create an introversive community.

Existing Waterfront

A pair of protection Berm is constructed at the gateway of community which could act as waterfront market and loading area and could also be temporally used as public space for festival and birthday party or weddings. With the wetland and basin eco system working as backup in water use for the whole site the t, a new transitional community is going to take shape.

Housing Typology

The house unit is learning from the traditional Vietnamese rural housing which is an L shape single family house with double entrance in front and at side and orchard, ponds, utility around the house. So in order to densify, the open space is limited to the front yard which half surrounded by the L-shape house and utility or small commerce are coordinated into the unit.
