02 BOUNDARY Academic Work / Individual Work 2020.1-2020.6, 6 months Instructor: Liu, Hongyun Graduation Project Rework 2020 Fall This project is designed as an open activity center for teachers and students in the school, surrounding native residents, young makers who have just graduated, tourists, students taking postgraduate entrance exams, and other students. There is not only the demand of teachers and students for learning space and discussion space, but also the demand of people around for public space. In addition, it can provide a variety of options and services for many tourists and students who are attracted by the reputation of visiting and auditing. At the same time, as a member of the city, the school, in order to break the single closed boundary between the city and the campus, responds to the negative image of the campus on the urban interface, and creates community relations, thus inspiring us to explore the boundary relations of different states.

Note: This project, site at Southeast Univiresity, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China.

Site Analysis The site is located in Nanjing, Jiangsu. The above drawings shows the location of the site and the surrounding site information on a larger and smaller scale respectively. The site is in the canteen of Southeast University, and it surrounding with the boundaries of different states. The site is very suitable for a building that responds to different boundary states.

Population Analysis This project is designed as an open activity center for the students and teachers in the school, the surrounding native residents, tourists, postgraduate students and so on.It not only meets the needs of teachers and students for learning space and discussion space, but also meets the needs of the surrounding people for public space.

Generation Process As shown in the figure above, the building block is generated in four general steps.

01 CARBON FIBER Academic Work / Team Work 2020.10-2020.11,5 weeks Collabrator: Ma Yifan Instructor: Kuan-Ting Lai; Zee Leong Personal Contribution: concept, model, drawing, fabrication Compared with the independence of traditional landscape structures, this project is based on the study of form, trying to design a system that can be freely spliced and full of variations. In this system, through the splicing of the original form, an orderly and varied form and space can be formed to meet different needs and bring people rich experience. Even in a larger square scale, the combination of various forms can form a larger density and scale of landscape architecture. We will use carbon fiber as the material to weave a prototype. Carbon fiber is light and strong, and its shaping is a process from soft to hard, with the potential to weave a smoother curve. The use of carbon fiber as a material can avoid the heaviness brought by traditional materials, making the volume more visually light. At the same time, we will also explore the possibility of using the robotic arm for production on a larger scale.` Note: This project, named Open Project 152, is finished at Studio Alpha in Shanghai, China.

Concept

Like molecules, seemingly disordered arrangements actually follow a certain pattern. In this project, we use grids to control and manufacture complex associations based on simple shapes.Cut a rectangular pyramid from a cube and find an edge on each surface to form a space surface. In this way, we can control the splicing of the surface by controlling the splicing of the prism so as to produce more changes in the frame.

Form-Finding

(a)

(a)

Select the round arc and splice it to form a more compliant curve.

The midpoint of the edge of the pyramid is used as the control point, and symmetric curves are selected, so that the surfaces can still be connected when interlocked or rotating.

The curves are kept as low as possible to create more interior space.

Scenes

As an arch that people can walk through it, it could be set at a playground.

As a seat that people can lean on, it could be set at a rest area.

As a shelter that people can stay underneath, it could be a bus station.

Stress Analysis

As a pavilion that people can gather underneath, it could be a stall.

Fabrication Logic We analyzed the above stress state and used Kangaroo for stress analysis to get the stress line. Then we strengthen the area of stress concentration and get a generally applicable braiding method.

Pattern Layering The main three groups of braided structure, in accordance with the glass fiber - carbon fiber carbon fiber braided order fixed on the mold, and finally wait for the resin soaked fiber dry molding.

PROCESS OF FABRICATION During the project, the lamps is handmade, whereas it can be woven by a robotic arm, controlled by coding, if the protect is put into mass production. The process of handmaking can be roughly categorized into six steps, from assembling the mold to demolding the finished product.

03 Past, Present, and Future of Rails Academic Work / Individual Work 2020.7-2020.9, 3 months Urban Design Instructor: Harry lee; Ting Yin Location: Hangzhou The large number of single uses in the city all have the same aspect. The intersections between one single use and another form the intersections that often harbor destructive forces in cities.A junction zone -- a large single-use area -- forms the edge of the «normal» area of the city.Often, the borderline is thought of as a negative object, or simply a borderline. But, in fact, the border zone can play a positive role.A railroad track is a typical example of a junction. The old railway tracks in Hangzhou played a positive role in promoting the urban development in the early stage. However, with the development of the city and the continuous expansion of the urban area, the railway tracks gradually become the existence of dividing the city and hindering the development of the city. Therefore, it is assumed that after the disappearance of the single railway tracks, what changes will occur to the original space?

Note: This project, This project, named Open Project 130, is finished at Studio Alpha in Shanghai, China.

When Hangzhou Railway Station was completed, the scale of Hangzhou city was small, mainly on the east side of West Lake. The railway served as a connection between Hangzhou and other city

Later, after the the founding of the people’s Republic of China, Qiantang River Bridge had completed and Across the Qiantang River.

Through the Great Cultural Revolution, most of China’s urban city developed most stagnent. After the catastrophe, Hnagzhou’s two regions began to develop toward each other.

Noedays, the expressways and subway have repalced the original railway in connecting the two stations. The new high-speed rail line fuether pushed the old railroad tracks to be abandoned.

Analysis of human activities Based on the research of daily activities of local residents, several human activities are listed. Different activities take uo different time span along each day and vary in the number of people engaged in terms of weekdays and weekends.

SITE 2 is located near the West Lake, which receives more that 20 million visitors a year, the most famous scenic spot in Hangzhou.

SITE 1 is located in the center of the city, near the Hangzhou railway station. With a higher density of peolple in the cities, the demand for public space is growing.

SITE 3 is is located in the Qiantang River Bridge. The west bank of the bridge is adjacent to a scenic spot, and the buildings are scattered. The south bank is followed by a large center of high-tech industrial park, with a large building volume.

SITE 4 is in Hangzhou High-tech Industrial Park. The north side is the High-tech Industrial Park, which is mainly composed of a large number of factories and buildings of hi-tech companies. The south side is the village in the city, with high building density.

Hangzhou Railway Brigade clothing shop One side of the site is backed by the mountain forest, and the site itself is the maintenance place for the train. On the other side of the site is a dense residential area. After the reconstruction, it is hoped that the function can provide a leisure center for the surrounding residences, and also serve as a bridge connecting the residences with the scenic spot.

Lou Ting Bamboo Construction Design Team Work 05/2019 The aim of this design is to create a resting pavilion for people to stop in the outdoors. We tried to construct a tensioned structure using the characteristics of bamboo material to form a clear structural system.

Infinity Cardboard Construction Design Team Work 04/2018 The purpose of this construction is to create a fun space for children to play in, Considering that the material is hard cardboard board, I adopted the method of origami to increase the structural strength of the cardboard, and to make the cardboard have the variability of linking and stretching. In form, I adopted the Mobius ring as the prototype, hoping to create more diverse spatial experience in a space of less than 10 square meters
