02 Retail Design

Concept statement

Golden Rhythm The Johnnie Walker store design gets inspired by Hans Zimmer's music Time and trying to convey the abstract sensory experience to consumers. Instead of designing a space to display the whiskey bottles, the interior design tries to create an immersive experience the same as Jonnie Walker's whiskey. The taste of whiskey cannot be directly "seen" by human eyes. However, the interior space can capture the abstract feeling and transform it into the concrete. The goal is to create dynamic, elegant and iconic retail environment for consumers which matches with the brand identity.

Project Description Zhangzhou, a legendary place locates between the terrace and the following coast of the sea in Fujian, China. Not only does the place have a deep meaning related to family attachment, but it also shows their affection with the pious hopes to the ocean. The character, Mo, protected the locals by the magic power given from the ocean. Because of her kindness to the ocean creatures, the story of going back home has been passed down in the local from generation to generation. The building, “Embrace”, inspired by the vernacular building style, which was originally used for the whole village's people to live in together. Nowadays, “Embrace” is an iconic family gathering center that allows visitors to create s family memories and engage with the local culture. It represents the hope of a return to home and the expectation of family reunions. Now we are sharing the story combined with the building to the visitors, to show the mysterious Eastern world culture to the world. Here visitors can enjoy the atmosphere of distinctive Chinese festival themes. Getting to know the unique architectural style and mysterious legends from the ocean civilization; interactive with the performance in the center; having dinner with family; learning traditional handcrafts; collecting treasures from the storyline; sending the wishes to the sky by Kongming lanterns. Remember where we have from and look forward to where we will go. At this moment, nothing is important but family.

Storyline Mo, was born in a faraway land in a fisherman’s family. She grew up in Zhangzhou where she heard stories about mysterious creatures and magical islands. Once when she was in the ocean, a thunderstorm swept her to an island. Lost in chaos, she was unable find a way out. Suddenly, a blue light appears, leading her to a magnificent creature, Yao. Yao was lost and trapped inside a net. Mo went to save him, and she adventures to find Yao’s home. During the journey, they conquered many challenges. Yet, Yao finally reaches his Kingdom. A pink pearl appears from Yao’s family’s tears when thanking Mo. This pearl is regarded as the oceans precious treasure. Mo understood the true meaning of helping others and protecting mother nature, man’s purest gift. The pearl helps Mo back home, and from then on cherished family and protected the ocean. Locals regard her as a legend, caring and maintaining harmony between villages. After her death, people believed that she turned into a phoenix, blessing them through her wings of nurture. Her selflessness is remembered by locals during festivals. Coming together in celebration, they remember her values and mantra, “remember from where you have come”.

User Experience Welcome to wonderland! The journey begins with the curtain facade that blowing in the wind. Getting into the interior by lifting up the curtain, visitors enjoy the meals in the restaurant, Qinmu Lou. They are also free to sit around the stream at the center, enjoying the performance and watching the cup floating on the stream. In the evening, the center stage rises, bringing the local unique shadow puppet show to visitors. The Changle Fang on the second floor is the interactive zone, picks up an ancient look, and gets dressed in it a souvenir. Then come to the handicraft place, and learn together to make Kongming lanterns, shadow puppets, collecting the handcrafted gifts: pearls from the ocean story. Additionally, the photo gallery in local clothes is the best place to capture the moment of happiness. Yunxiao Pavilion on the rooftop has the best view of the building. When the night falls, visitors send the lantern with hopes, appreciate the night view with stars, and walking on the walkway. This is the family’s happiness.
