02 The Cross

Case: Beijing Forestry University's Dormitory Building 5

Supervisor: Zhang Fan

Tasks: Desk Research, Ideation, Sketch, 3D Modeling, Rendering, Production Drawing

Brief:

In China, dormitory is one of the main places for university students, and its public spaces play an important role. More and more focus are located on the planning of public spaces in the domitory, but the furniture design is always ignored. Based on the analysis of the interior planning and furniture design of the public space of dormitory buildings for university students at home and abroad, the principles and methods of furniture design that suitable for the public space of Chinese dormitory buildings for university students are summarized in the thesis paper. Besides, a real site in Beijing

Forestry University's Dormitory Building 5 was chosen to investigate. Finally, combined with the current psychological and behavioral needs of university students in China, a interior planning and a series of furniture design were developed for this space. Except creating an aesthetic space for the students, this project aim to improve the utilization of the space, and create a flexible space for students to study, communicate and entertainment, ect.

Space in and around the Chair

"Two chairs to explore the space in and around the chair'"

From: Summer course (2 weeks) in BFU

Supervisor: Andreas Lund

Tasks: Teamwork (2) Research, Ideation, Sketch, 3D Modeling, Mockups

Brief:

The Chinese sage LaoTse writes: “A house is made by cutting holes for the door and windows in the already complete clay walls; it is thanks to these openings – this immaterialism, this unselfishness –that the house can be used as a house.” (Krogh, 2007) So are the chairs, the different vertical and horizontal elements of chair always form a space that human body can be seated. However, there's no defined rule to design a chair. What we can believe is that, physically and mentally, we should feel the chair to be natural and believe it to be beautiful. As French painter Georges Bracques said: "I love the rules that guide the feelings and I also love the feelings that guide the rules." Following this, we try to explore the space in and around the chairs by our constantly trying and testing by our body and feeling through developing two chairs.

04 Liberation

From: Workshop themed "Privacy"

Task: Team work (8) Research, Ideation, Collaborative Design, Curation

Brief: This curation is an outcome of a 14-day school workshop in KADK. The theme of the workshop is "Privacy". We're group of 8 students with different background. In the process, we "discovered" the things that we felt private through interviews, researches, and observations, and we "defined" the most common private thing and brainstormed ideas. We found that we all carry around a mental, sometimes very personal, weight. Then we "developed" an interactive exhibition where people can pick up one type of the mental weight to get it released in the secret room, thus gain some liberation.
