Types of play in the twentieth century

Site: Qingdao, Shangdong Individual Work

My design project East Boston Waterfront renewal Program matured the way that I approach to urbanism. East Boston was once an important shipping and shipbuilding center in the Boston area since the 19th century, but it began to be irreversibly abandoned after World War II. In addition, the relocation of civic activities and the excessive concentration of green space inland caused the East Boston community to lose its unique identity, and also ignored the demand of civic space for coastal residents.

By combing the abandoned urban brownfield along the coast of East Boston, I transformed it into scattered pocket parks, and by connecting these pocket parks, I rebuilt a costal green belt for the coastal community. I took the unique topography and structures of the pier, as well as residents’ water and ice life such as kayaking, fishing, skating, and swimming, into account, to re-provide outdoor activity venues for the coastal community. Subsequently, excavating the cultural and historical background of the site, and then carrying out urban planning and design on the basis of people-oriented, became the focus of my study and daily accumulation.

Current situation of site attendance

The number of teenagers who come to the venue every time after school accounts for 36%. The number of children coming to the venue during free weekend is 45%

Children and adolescents make up the largest portion of the day after dinner.
