BREATHING CUBE | THE RECONSTRUCTION OF STRUCTURAL LAB. HANGZHOU, CHINA Architectural Design IV, 3rd Year-Semester 1 Sept-Dec, 2015: Individual work 2

The structural laboratory is located in Yuquan campus of Zhejiang University. Considering the neglect of art by most of Chinese university students, I plan to create an art center which can also be regarded as a corridor on students’ commute. On the basis of preserving the original truss structure, a new grid system was added , bringing rich space experience and new vitality to the old structure. The corridor consisting of 4 cubes breaks the original single space of the building, and creates various flow inside and outside the cube. 3

URBAN OASIS | THE RENEWAL OF URBAN VILLAGE HANGZHOU, CHINA Architectural Design V, 3rd Year - Semester 2 Mar, 2016-June, 2016: Group work Group member : Zhao Shuang( team leader), Zhang Keyue, Sun Chaozhe Sept, 2016- Dec, 2016: Individual Rework 8

(The works from others are marked by * )

Luo's Village, a typical urban village in Hangzhou, surrounded by high-grade residence and villa, has been turned into a closed and walled community with the lack of communication with surroundings. This project is designed to remove the wall of Luo's village and establish the connection between Luo’s Village and other communities nearby. Creating an interesting playground for children which can also be an activity center for the community, the project provide the urbanites a relaxing place to release their mind, namely Urban Oasis. I hope the project can help not only promote the friendship between children, but also break the barriers between adults with different backgrounds.

Kids in Luo's Village Located in the west of Hangzhou, Luo’s village is a typical urban village with high building density and poor living environment. The population of Luo’s village is currently comprised of the local landlords, mostly elderly, and lots of migrant workers. The entire village is organized by the double cross road segmentation, Lacking public space and landscape greening. In the survey, many residents complained about their quality of life and living environment, the communication between people is also very deficient. [1]There's a lack of public entertainment space and playground for children. Only a small kindergarten with poor facilities is opened to local citizen. Children from migrant families are not allowed to enter. The aim is to provide children with playground for different activities, where they can establish friendship , and thus it will promote the communication between their parents or other residents. [3]To improve the living environment, the concept "tree" is adopted to provide people with an opportunity to be close to nature and become an oasis in the each urbanite’s mind.

" Look, this is my son's drawing!" We interviewed a migrant worker. Her family of four crowded a single room around ten square meters. She invited us to see the chalk drawing on the concrete floor and said that her son extremely likes painting. “I want to send him to an art class. 11

Master plan The site is in the southwest corner of Luo's Village, which is east of Linyu Lane, a luxury villa area, and north of medium-high grade apartment compounds. Lacking communication with other communities and the whole city, Luo’s village is surrounded by walls, and it leads to its self-imposed isolation. This project is intended to change the current isolation status of Luo's Village through some architectural processing methods. The overall design of the building plan is a concave shape. It removes the western wall and thus becomes attractive open space along the street. The block will be built into the outward entrance of Luo's Village, promoting the dialogue between the urban village and the surrounding environment.

A-A Section Exterior Render [2]There was no cafe in Luo's village. I planned a new cafe on the ground floor which can provide people in Luo's village and other nearby communities with a place to relax themselves and also a chance to communicate with each other. In the morning, the office workers can buy take-away breakfast conveniently when they pass by. The vegetation framework creates the entrance space for cafe, as well as a green corridor for pedestrian. [3]On the upper level, several independent volumes are connected by rest platforms, suspension bridges and slides where children can find a lot of fun. These independent small boxes in the air looks much more like tree house.

A-A section shows the spatial change in the vertical direction. The inspiration comes from “tree house”. I take advantage of different distribution of building volumes in vertical direction to create rich and changeable space. By reducing the building on ground floor, it is used as community garden for people in Luo’s village or nearby residents, which provides a platform for social activity. By adding recreational facilities such as giant slides and suspension among these volumes, the building became children’s playground, bringing them the feeling of exploring in the forest.

Exterior Rendering The huge tree overlying the whole building is an important element in my design. It will be a striking and unique urban landscape and thus an attractive entrance of Luo’s Village, which is a great vehicle for changing the current situation of closure . Considering the fact that it takes hundred of years for a sapling to grow into such a giant tree and it is not practical to transplant a huge tree from other place, how to realize the imagination about "tree" become a crucial problem. "Vegetation Framework" is thus coming. The framework can support a variety of vegetation to consist of a giant tree visually. Also, while adding some platforms and stairs it could be a suitable place for children to have fun. Children can climb the frame and walk through the vegetation, which is similar to the experience of wandering in forest. 18

The rendering shows the scene when looking across Linyu street. The appearance is like a huge tree, while the building looks like several eyes in the tree. The central trunk-like climb frame becomes another special entrance to building. Four pathways on the ground lead people to Luo’s Village. Being an attractive entrance of Luo's Village because of its imaginative and impressive appearance, it breaks the original continuous walls around the village and establish the connection between Luo's Village and surrounding urban environment. Besides, it's quite a precious green land for Luo's Village - a high density residential area. A lot of public facilities and open space for the whole community and surroundings such as the community garden, cafes and stores, recreational facilities are designed especially in lower area.

Vegetation framework [1]Wood structure is adopted to build the vegetation framework. The main frame is built by prefabricated component by connecting with steel joinery. [2]The wood column is fixed on a concrete column base which is height adjustable . [3]The secondary smaller scale frame uses the Traditional Mortise-Tenon Connection which can be assembled and disassembled conveniently.

project is located in Las Arenas de Cabrales, a northwestern village in Spain with an enormous production of blue cheese. The local people live a le life in a traditional way. Every day, they commute between different places as caves, cow sheds, workshops and so on to finish the daily routine. cows, cheese, milk and different people works in their right "orbits".

plan is to let these orbits "meet with" each other. They interact, weave or even knot together to generate new spaces. There are new stories and events ening in these spaces at different moments. The changing actors, plays and stages provide unique space sequences flowing in users’ minds.

bining cheese production, cows raising with residents lives and visitors' experience will provide Cabrales with a new model of cheese production and sm and the flow pattern can be an interesting productive landscape living in harmony with nature.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

Cheese x Cows x People Cabrales is a municipality in the autonomous community of Asturias, northwestern Spain. It is situated between the Sierra de Cuera and the Picos de Europa, and is a region famous for its Cabrales cheese. Important towns within the municipality include Arenas de Cabrales, where my project is located in. Nowadays Arenas' economy seems to be primarily based on tourism, although unlike many tourist centers it retains its authentic style – and hospitality. Cabrales Cheese (Spanish: queso de Cabrales) is a blue cheese made in the artisan tradition by rural dairy farmers in Asturias, Spain. This cheese can be made from pure, unpasteurized cow’s milk or blended in the traditional manner with goat and/ or sheep milk, which lends the cheese a stronger, spicier flavor. All of the milk used in the production of Cabrales must come exclusively from herds raised in a small zone of production in Asturias, in the mountains of the Picos de Europa.

Two separate orbits belongs to "Cheese" and "Cows" supporting efficient cheese production and cow's daily activities.

Several programming volume mentioned before grows along the orbits.

People are attracted by different programming and move freely among these functional blocks.

New spaces will generate at each intersection of people, cows, and cheese.

The "cross-section" turns into new platforms of buildings which can support a variety of activities.

Along with the establishment of several pathways, corridors or other open spaces. Tree orbits interweave and knot together.

Form Generation How far can a good conceptual logic promote the architectural scheme? In this project, I tried to use the objective demand and rational logic to create the concrete form and minimize subjective preference during the generation. However, the form aesthetic and general rules should still be controlled by designers. 26

KNOTTING ORBITS

Exterior Render Interaction is an important topic in all of my projects. And here the “users” of building is not only people themselves. I focus on the social communication between visitors, local people, cheese makers and cow raisers. At the same time, I also pay attention to the interaction happened among cheese, cows, people, and the space itself. I try to

create several typical prototypes for different interaction. The openness, accessibility, and space position relationships of each prototype is considered according to the interactive mode. The exterior render above represents several scenes to describe the interaction between people, cows and cheese. The conveyor belt cross the cafe’s

kitchen to serve fresh milk and cheese. When people wander on the pathway, they could find cows eating grass on the pasture just in a close distance. The restaurant locating in the pasture enjoys a spacious natural view with the Picos de Europa and Carles River. All visitors have the opportunity to get close connect with the nature and the animals.

he development of society and technology, people rely much more on electricity products and information system. With quantities of researches, we sed a new kind of working mode - cell working in which people work as individual cells and connect each other with efficient information network ke our neural systems. Based on this assumption, we tried to create workplace with extreme efficiency and high degrees of freedom. Because of the inion net, there is no need to work together. People can work in cafe, park, roof of anywhere they like.

ver, here is the contradiction: if we human do not need to gather together for work any more, why do we still plan to create a physical office park? we just realized that, the true reason people gathering together is not "work", but "life". The strongest network between us human beings should be motional bond rather than a information system. Thus, we designed a large amount of " In-between" space to make the connection of buildings to ZOTP and Chengxi Sci-tech Innovation Zone a suitable place for both work and live.

35

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

1. the concept "company" dissapears. People tend to work alone as individual cells.

2. The human society is decentralized

3. Instead of working together, people connect each other with the huge information network.

4. Those with stongly connection come closer. They try to find an organization mode.

5. A "neural network" system has been priliminarily formed.

6. With the presence of secondary connection, the working system becomes more complete.

7. Besides work efficiency, "life" becomes a key issue. The proper space to live is in high demand.

8. The two interwoven system provide people the chance to establish a connection with others both for work or life.

ELLVOLUTION

Concept poster

With the rapid development of social economy and information technology, we predicted that the working mode in the future would turn into a brand-new mode, that cells as individuals working independently as entrepreneurs and innovators. All the recruitment information and resumes are stored in cloud databases, being available for review or invoking. The information network will recommend

the individuals intelligently and also changes itself over the course of a day, week, seasons, and years to suit the ever-changing needs and activities of the users as a highly intelligent, continuous learning system. However, a physical office park would lose the meaning of existence, if we human need a long-term work at a fixed site anymore. So, we started thinking and finally figured out that

psychological needs are the inevitable reason to this work mode. The strongest network between us human beings should be the irreplaceable emotional bond more than a cold information system. We designed various kinds of in-between space to establish a bridge of communications between people by the methods such as thoughtfully programming mixeduse lands and shared space.

Focusing on the electronic information industry, software and creative design, financial intermediary and other categories, the Sci-Tech City will strive to create a 2.5 industrial agglomeration with the integrative development of secondary and tertiary industries. At present, many industries have settled down, and it has been one of the fastest growing technology industrial zones in the country. However, the unbalance between rapid industrial and economic development and more backward life supporting lead to the consequence similar to CBD phenomenon. 1:500 Site Model & Height control There are many commercial buildings on the north side of the site, while the south side is Yuhangtang River. Therefore, from north to south, the building shows a tendency of lower height and smaller scale, which is consistent with the functional planning of the Park. More traditional centralized office space and business function space such as hotels and banks are

40

distributed in the north, but the southern part has more cafe and other auxiliary function space along the river, as well as the low-rise apartments. In this form, whether it is private work, group work or the traditional business pattern, all can find a suitable office space in the Park. Life and work also have a very good transition.

Mix-use [1]In order to change the traditional industrial park mode into a new mode with the combination of life and work, a highly mixed-use strategy is adopted in the planning. The ground floor or second floor is mainly used as public space, such as stores, restaurant, and other services industry. Upper levels are used as living space and different types of working space. People can always find a suitable space for work or relax in the park. [2]The concept of mix use continues to the concrete architectural spaces which provide a variety of activity spaces such as gym, supermarket, game center.

Waterfront Pathway The river in the southern part of the park has become an important landscape resource. The waterfront pathway provide pleasant space such as graffiti wall, openair theater, and wharf.

Commercial Street From east to west, the central commercial street has gradually transformed its main functions from life to business. It meanwhile provides a venue for cultural and artistic communication at the intersection with north-south roads, which are connecting the two universities. The shops and outdoor cafe along the both sides of street make up for the lack of life supporting facilities in the west of city. With the car speed limit to 15km/h, the coexistence of people and vehicles will bring more vitality to the park.
