COVID-19: The Role and Impact of Vaccinations in this Pandemic
S
ince the inception of the discovery of the coronavirus in Wuhan City, in the Hubei province of China and the spread of the coronavirus from Europe to the United States, this country’s leadership has finally harnessed the courage and has applied vast resources to develop the technology with scientifically validated research results and clinical trials to make a safe vaccine for public use. As of today March 16, 2021, more than 39 million Americans have been fully vaccinated and more than 100 million Americans have received their first dose of the vaccine with either the vaccine pro-
duced by Pfizer or Moderna. In addition, Merck Pharmaceuticals and Johnson & Johnson have teamed up with each other, along with the imprimatur of the U.S. government to produce a vaccine, requiring only one (1) dose in order to be completely vaccinated. In part, the deployment of the Defense Production ACT, by U.S. President Joe Biden, strongly aided with the collaboration of these two normal competitors in the marketplace. Implementation of Vaccinations
With the safety of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines having gotten their approval from
(pronounced LEE-UU)
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), administration of these two (2) vaccines for the mitigation and reduction of the complications associated with the contraction of the covid-19 illness has begun. Vaccinations will be done in several phases ranging from phase 1a, phase 1b, and to phase 1c. Frontline and essential workers will be vaccinated first. Why? This is being performed in this fashion so that the healthcare workers involved in keeping our health delivery system functioning will be available to continue to administer medical care to Americans needing immediate care and vaccinations. In order to fully implement testing and vaccinations at Zion Hill Baptist Church, we want to continue to provide our members and the community in which we are (continued on page 3)
Another Word of Deep Appreciation
O
nce more we want to extend our deepest appreciation for your kindness and consideration in recognizing our 27 years of serving with you. In reflecting upon every act of kindness – every card, gift, wave, word, drive-by, long-distant/virtual hug, and prayer – before and after March 7th, we want you to know that our immense gratitude cannot be adequately articulated or marginally measured. We will persistently cherish these acts and times, for we realize that it does not have to be this way and such deeds come only through your abounding generosity and God’s amazing grace. Continuously, we go to our Great Provider on your behalf, always petitioning for your growth in the Spirit and general wellbeing. We look forward to continuing our spiritual journey together. n

COVID-19 Task Force Meeting
O
n March 8, 2020 we held a Zion Hill COVID-19 Task Force virtual meeting to discuss our position with respect to the continuing crisis. After reviewing the current state of the pandemic (wherein it was generally concluded that the disease remains very much with us) and reporting on the vaccine and testing programs now being held on our Church campus (see announcements in this newsletter), we concluded that for the moment we would continue our virtual operations. However, we engaged in considerable conversation on how and when we should reopen the campus. Two basic points of view arose – 1) opening partially and earlier and 2) opening more extensively, but later. Both approaches have advantages and pose challenges. At that time we did not arrive at a consensus on one of these two general methods, but will continue to discuss them. We did, though, come up with two action items that will assist us in the process of knowing better when to reassemble in person. Those two items were 1) having the Health Ministry provide the congregation with weekly updates on pertinent information regarding the pandemic and 2) a survey to get some sense of how many in the Zion Hill Family have received full vaccination. Both of these activities will start this month of April, 2021. While we acknowledge and even share in suffering from so-called “COVID fatigue” – that feeling of frustration and aggravation in dealing with the multifaceted problems that this disease has caused – we urge all brothers and sisters to observe for a little while longer the standard COVID-19 protocols – wearing masks, washing hands, physical/social distancing, staying at home when feeling ill, and testing. We ask that you seriously consider taking one of the COVID-19 vaccines when it becomes available to you (Mrs. Parker and I have already done so). If you have medical questions about the vaccines, consult your health professionals. Brothers and sisters, there seems to be a proverbial light at the end of this long and dark tunnel; we have gone through so much already, so we can hold on a little while longer. The Apostle Paul’s words might serve us well here: “So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9). We must persevere; we can overcome, hoping and trusting in our sustaining and delivering God. n —Pastor Parker

Vaccinations in this Pandemic (continued) serving relevant and current facts about the status of the coronavirus and covid-19. Key Questions about the Vaccines
What is the nature of the existing vaccines which are being administered at the present time? If I am allergic to penicillin, should I get the vaccine? How long does it take for the vaccine to work and thereby mitigate and reduce the severity of a potential illness within me due to Covid-19? Is one dose of the new vaccine being produced and is available from Johnson and Johnson pharmaceutical as effective and efficacious as the two (2) doses, currently being offered by Pfizer and Moderna? What are the major side effects of the Covid-19 vaccine?
With respect to side effects from the vaccinations, one can usually expect some mild pain in the arm about 10 to 14 hours after the injection of the vaccine in the deltoid muscle (i.e., upper arm). In addition, one can experience a mild headache and sometimes a mild fever. Rarely, does one get a severe reaction following the injection of the vaccine such as shortness of breath, chest pain, or a severe anaphylactoid reaction. Nature of the Vaccine
The nature of the existing vaccines is derived from a moiety or part of the spike proteins in the coronavirus and the further development of the vaccine through the
reaction of messenger RNA with the spike proteins. In brief, the new vaccine is not composed of an active live virus of the coronavirus. Delivery of the Vaccine at Zion Hill Baptist Church
When can we expect Zion Hill Baptist Church to become a potential pilot site for delivering vaccines in our communities? Under the great leadership of our Pastor, Rev. Dr. Aaron L. Parker, Ph.D., with collaboration of the Zion Hill Task Force including the Zion Hill Baptist Church Health Ministry and the Fulton County Board of Health in Georgia, vaccinations (continued on next page) ZHBC@zionhill.org |

Vaccinations in this Pandemic (continued) to persons in our community were given to registered participants on Tuesday, March 16, 2021 and Thursday, March 18, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. With the excellent support staff of Zion Hill, including Sister Tina Spencer-Smith, the Facilities group with Brothers Tyron Moore and John Brown, the Culinary Ministry with Brother Jacques Ficklin, and a myriad number of volunteers, the first two vaccination sessions were fully scheduled with 120 registrants on both days. In addition, I had the opportunity to observe on site, in our gymnasium, our delivery of services from the entry point of taking temperatures, confirmation of registrations, completions of applications by the registrants to the actual vaccinations of participants, with post vaccinations periods of observations from 15 to 20 minutes. The flow and throughput of the community participants for these were an efficient and friendly operation. Moreover, I was available to answer

questions from a medical standpoint such as should one with an allergy to penicillin be allowed to get the vaccination for Covid-19? Briefly, I informed the Fulton County Board of Health participant, that an allergy to penicillin is not a contraindication to receiving the Covid-19 vaccine. When one with the previous penicillin allergy has received the vaccine, the post-vaccination observation period for the vaccinated person, should be extended from 15 minutes to about 20 to 25 minutes. These guidelines were followed and the participants did well with no need for further extended observation beyond the 25 minutes as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Where do we go from here?
In concert with our motto: “Living to love, and Loving to Serve”, our Pastor, Dr. Parker, charged the health ministry with the development of “Weekly Updates on the Covid-19 Virus” with presentations
during our Sunday Services. These weekly updates will start in the first week of April 2021, and will be about 1 to 1/12 minutes in duration, and these will include impactful information for the church family and the community. Finally, within this vaccination period we must still wear our masks, keep the 6 feet of social distancing in public places, wash our hands for at least 20 seconds, and cough into our sleeves when we have to. In addition, we can unmask in small groups if one is familiar with the confirmation of vaccinations of the person/s in the group. In the spirit of greater health and safety, let us continue to be cognizant of the health of our neighbors and let us fervently seek the help of our Lord as we travel through this pandemic. n Yours in the faith and peace, — Dea. Shelby R. Wilkes, M.D., MBA Chair, Zion Hill Baptist Church Health Ministry
RESTORE OUR EARTH Earth Day – April 22nd
T
his years’ Earth Day may look and feel a little different than years past because of the pandemic, but the intent is the same as it has been since its inception back in 1970! There might not be many large face-to-face global gatherings, national observations and celebrations or state and local parades and activities but the Summits and discussions still abound and are designed to encourage heartfelt unity around the common cause of saving our earth! The 2021 Earth Day theme is Restore Our Earth and EARTHDAY.ORG along with lead organizers of Education International, Hip Hop Caucus, and Earth Uprising are organizing three separate parallel climate action summits on April 20 and 21 ahead of the Biden Administration’s global leaders’ climate summit. The parallel summits focus respectively on climate literacy, environmental justice, and a broad range of youth-led climate-focused issues. “President Biden bringing together world leaders to discuss climate change on Earth Day is a major turning point in global climate action! This youth-led summit will bring together global youth climate activists to prepare a message for President Biden on the eve of his historic summit. Youth around the world are experiencing some of
the worst effects of climate change right now. We’re suffering from extreme weather, pollution, civil unrest, and the loss of lives and livelihoods. Our summit will identify the key issues and solutions most important to youth. The future of our generation is at stake and it’s important for our voices to be heard!” said Alexandria Villaseñor, Founder of Earth Uprising. The focus this year strongly favors the educational component. Susan Hopgood, President of Education International, said, “The fight against climate change must have an education face and a teacher’s voice in every area of the world.” “Teachers know that the most important long-term investment our societies can make towards a sustainable future is ensuring every student is literate about climate science and equipped with the civic knowledge and skills to change course,” said David Edwards, General Secretary, Education International.” Browsing the subjects on the website one is impressed with how intensive and extensive the effort needs to be. Content titles advocate the importance and urgency of making climate change education part of the school curriculum (worldwide) starting as early as environmental education for toddlers. Although we should all be doing whatever we can right now, inevitably the children and youth of today will have to continue the fight to save our world. And while we as adults are instilling in them a sense of obligation to the restoration of the planet and training them in the ways of sustainability and zero-carbon and green jobs etc., let us not forget to educate them about the very groundwork for it all. Teach them that we are beholden to God the Creator, who gifted this earth to us and that we were chosen by Him to care for it. Teach them well and let them lead the way… n — Sis. Giving Time
I have a confession: prior to coming to Zion Hill, “giving time” was a time for panic. I almost never carry cash in my wallet; I never take a pen with me to church; and I need at least a day’s notice to locate my checkbook. The offering plate always caught me empty-handed. When I came to Zion Hill there were giving options for people like me. Instead of being a time for panic, now “giving time” can be what it is intended to be – a time of gratitude. Most normal people probably do not share my fear of offering plates. However, the past ten months of virtual services have eliminated them from all of our lives. The purpose of this article is to inform members about all of the opportunities Zion Hill offers to ensure that we can express our gratitude for God’s grace and mercy in a virtual space.
If none of these electronic options appeal to you, then you can always mail your tithe/offering to the church’s new P.O. box: Zion Hill Baptist Church P.O. Box 44643 Atlanta, GA 30336-3218 Attn: FINANCE
Electronic Bill Pay This option allows a member to use their own online or mobile banking service to send a check directly to Zion Hill. How does it work: You set up a payment to Zion Hill through your online banking account. Then you schedule when that payment occurs and how much that payment is. The bank then writes a check to Zion Hill from your bank account. The bank mails that check to Zion Hill. Most banks also give you the option of setting up the donation as a recurring payment, if that is your preference. What is Needed: In order to use this option, you must first have a banking account that can be accessed through a computer or mobile device. How do I set it up: The specific steps will depend on how your own bank handles things. However, here is a general set of steps that are likely to apply to your bank. 1. Log in to your existing banking account. 2. Select the “Bill pay” or “Pay a bill” option. 3. You will need to “Add payee” or Add a new bill recipient manually.
8
| THE LIU
4. The name for the payee is “Zion Hill Baptist Church”. 5. If it asks for an account number, then use your name or “Zion Hill” as the Account Number. 6. Input the church’s mailing address: [P.O. Box 44643, Atlanta GA 30336]. 7. Confirm that the information is correct and click the “finish” or “add payee” button. How do I make a payment: Again, the specific steps will depend on your own bank, but the process will generally look something like this: 1. Login to your existing bank account. 2. Select the “Bill pay” or “Pay bill” option. 3. This will lead to a screen that allows you to select the bill that you want to pay. This is where you select “Zion Hill Baptist Church” (or whatever you named the church when you set things up) from among your list of payees. 4. Enter the amount of your tithe/offering. 5. In the “Memo” section you can specify what the payment is for. This is what you would use to designate funds for the 10for10 rather than general tithes and offerings. 6. Select the date that you want the payment delivered by. 7. Confirm that everything is correct and then click on “make payment” or “schedule payment”. What does it Cost: Typically, banks do not charge customers any fees for using their “bill pay” features. There is also no cost to the church for receiving money. Do I need to learn something new: It depends. If you already pay bills in this way, then there is nothing to learn. You can just follow your bank’s procedures. If you are new to paying bills electronically or to online banking, then this will require you to learn how to access and use your bank’s website or mobile app. Who should use this: If you already pay bills electronically through your bank; if you do not want to provide your banking/credit card information to any apps; if you do not want yourself or the church to be charged transaction fees; if you want to schedule
your tithes/offerings in advance; if you like the idea of mailing a check but you don’t want to use your own envelopes and stamps; or if you want the flexibility of using a computer or a mobile device, then this is a great option for you. Does it work on mobile: Assuming that your bank has a mobile app (most banks do), yes it works on mobile.
EasyTithe EasyTithe is an app that is focused only on tithes/offerings. It allows members to give via the web, a mobile app, and through text messages. How does it work: EasyTithe’s interface is analogous to “checkout” when you shop online. You enter your payment information, click submit, and your credit/ debit card or bank account is charged. The church receives the money in its account within 2-3 business days. EasyTithe allows for recurring gifts and tracks your giving history. What is Needed: All you need is a computer or mobile device. EasyTithe allows you to create an account, but an account is not necessary in order to give. How do I set it up: It is recommended that you create an account if you plan on using easyTithe regularly. The setup process varies depending on your method of accessing easyTithe. Online Giving Setup You can register on the web: 1. Go to easytithe.com/zionhill . 2. Click “Sign In”. 3. Click “Register for an account”. 4. E nter your name, address, and either your email address or phone number. 5. Y ou will receive a verification email (if you entered your email) or a pin number. texted to you (if you entered your phone number). 6. O nce you enter that verification number, your registration is complete. Mobile App Setup EasyTithe has a mobile app. Search for “easytithe” in the app store. It has a picture of a church with a lowercase “e” on the front.
1. O pen the app and it will ask you to find your organization. Enter both “Zion Hill Baptist Church” and the zipcode “30331”. 2. You should get only one result. Confirm the address and select it. 3. That will bring up a login box. Click “Create Account”. 4. Enter your information, create a password, and create a login pin number. How do I make a payment: Using the Web or the App 1. Go to easytithe.com/zionhill or login to the app and click “Give Now”. 2. Select the fund you are giving towards (tithes/offering, special offering, 10 for 10, etc.). 3. Enter the amount of your tithe/offering. 4. If you want to give towards another fund (for example, if you are making both a tithe and 10 for 10 donation), then use the “Add donation” button to donate to another fund. This will allow you to combine the full donation into one transaction (and one transaction fee). 5. You have the option to give by credit/ debit card or via ACH from your bank account. 6. Enter your payment information. 7. Decide if you want to cover the processing fee. 8. Make sure everything is correct and press submit. Using Text to Give 1. Text the amount of your tithe/offering to 770-604-1450 2. You will receive a reply text with a link. 3. Click on the link and it will take you to the same web interface as above. What does it Cost: Later this month, EasyTithe fees will be slightly reduced to a 2.2% processing charge ($2.20 on a donation of $100) plus $0.30 on each debit/credit transaction. The fees are significantly lower on donations made via ACH. Generally, the church absorbs these transaction fees. Donors will always receive credit for their full donation. Easy tithe does provide the ability for the donor to increase their donation amount to cover the fee, but this is entirely optional. Do I need to learn something new: If you are familiar with online shopping, then this works the same way. If online transactions are new to you, then you will need to learn how to navigate the web page. Who should use this: If you like the idea of having a separate app for tithes/offering; if you do not mind the transaction fee or want an easy way to pay that fee; if you want to have an easily accessible history of your giving; if you think texting is cool; if
you want to make recurring gifts (the same offering each month for example); or if you like the flexibility of having different ways of giving – app, online, and texts, then this is a great option for you. Does it work on mobile: Yes, EasyTithe has its own app, the web app works well on mobile, and there is “text to give”.
PayPal This option allows for an electronic payment from your credit/debit card, or PayPal account, to the church. How does it work: By using the Paypal “Donate” link on the church website, you can use a credit/debit card to make a donation with or without a PayPal account. Additionally, using the PayPal website or mobile app, money can transferred from your credit/debit card or PayPal account to Zion Hill. It is an identical process as to when PayPal is used to buy something online. What is Needed: All you need is a credit or debit card. However, if you plan on regularly using this method, then it would be helpful to create a PayPal account. Follow these steps to sign-up for an account: 1. Go to paypal.com . 2. Click the “Sign Up” button. 3. Select “Personal Account” then click “Next”. 4. The next page gives you the option of downloading the Paypal mobile app and scanning the QR code. Most of us will just click “continue to the website”. 5. Enter your phone number. 6. A verification code will be texted to you. Enter that code on the next screen. 7. Enter your email address, first and last name, and create a password for your account. 8. Enter your address and agree to the terms of service to create the account. How do I set it up: If you already have a PayPal account, then there is no additional setup. How do I make a payment: Follow the steps below. 1. Login to your PayPal account. 2. Click “Send money” or “Send”. 3. Enter the church email address zhbc@ zionhill.org Do not search for “Zion Hill
or zhbc”. There are other churches and groups with these names. If you select them, your donation may be sent to the wrong church. In order to ensure that your donation is routed properly, you must use our church’s full email address, zhbc@zionhill.org. 4. E nter the amount of your tithe/offering, enter a message if you desire, then click “Next”. 5. Select your method of payment, then click “Next”. 6. R eview the information to make sure it is correct. If it is, then press “Send”. What does it Cost: PayPal charges the church a fee of 2.2% of the donation ($2.20 on a donation of $100) plus $0.30 for each transaction. However, donors will always receive credit for their full donation. If you’d like to cover the transaction fee cost, you can add it to your donation (for example, by giving $102.50 instead of $100). Do I need to learn something new: It depends. If you already have a PayPal account, then this is straightforward. If you do not have a PayPal account, then you will need to become familiar with PayPal or enter your payment information at each transaction. Who should use this: If you already have a PayPal account; if you do not mind the transaction fee; if you like the instantaneous nature of the transaction; if you do not need to schedule your tithes/offerings; or if you like the convenience of something that works on computers and on mobile devices, then this is a great option. Does it work on mobile: Yes, PayPal has its own mobile app. It is important to note that you can set up recurring donations with all three of these giving platforms – electronic bill pay, easyTithe, and PayPal. You simply select that option when you are making the payment. I will end with a short testimony about my own giving. This past year, 2020, marked the first time that I tithed for the full calendar year. I use EasyTithe, so it was encouraging to see the consistency of my giving history throughout the year. I did not experience any huge windfalls of cash as a result of tithing. Indeed, my salary was reduced by 5% as part of pandemic-related budget cuts. Despite that, I was able to find more peace of mind around money than I’ve ever had. The difference is that I started to give out of genuine gratitude for God’s grace, mercy, and provision. It sounds silly, but these electronic tools helped to deepen my faith. —Bro. Matthew Platt Trustee Ministry ZHBC@zionhill.org |
