Outreach Ministry Sunday Emphasizes God’s Call to Serve Others
Zion Hill celebrated Outreach Ministry Day on Sunday, March 19, 2023 with prayer, praise, worship, and a call for more worshippers to move beyond the sanctuary. The celebration hosted by the March, June, and July Clubs placed a laser focus on the many organizations locally, nationally, and even internationally that continue to enjoy blessings because of Zion Hill’s obedience to God’s call to love and serve others.
Sister Gwendolyn Buchanan, Outreach Coordinator for the June Club Ministry, greeted members and friends
and declared that all who serve and give their time, talent and funds are philanthropists who are appreciated for their love and service.
Sister Donna Watts-Nunn followed with an emphasis on Zion Hill’s unwavering commitment to the Church Motto of Living to Love and Loving to Serve. She provided several examples of services provided by the church that include the Care to Love Outreach Ministry’s provision of 300 lovingly prepared meals monthly for the homeless, financial support for Atlanta University Center schools, and the
meals provided for students in a Liberian school through ongoing financial support from Zion Hill.
The greatest demonstration of Zion Hill’s commitment to service included thankful testimonies. Ms. Tanya Watkins, Director of Development for the Nicholas House, emphasized the year-round support of the June Club. She spoke of the Club’s commitment to serving meals, assisting with back-to-school supplies, sponsoring a room for a homeless family, and adopting a family at Christmas.

A Spring Evangelism Surge
As most of us know by now, our annual theme is “Power Surge,” which suggests the ideas of force, extra effort, intentionally going beyond the norm toward a specific goal. I want to call upon all of us to participate in an evangelistic surge during this springtime of the year. As we watch the trees bud, the flowers bloom, the grass grow, and the creatures of God scratching, humming and running about with new activity, let us also become extraordinarily active in spreading the good news of God in Christ Jesus to others.
Such an effort might take on numerous forms, depending on time, setting, and the circumstances of the people we approach. One of the best general methods, however, is meeting people where they are physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. This method often requires more careful listening than it does bold talking, for in so doing we demonstrate the love, care and compassion that Jesus the Christ showed toward those he encountered and subsequently drew toward himself. Almost every day, we meet people who need someone to hear their story of struggle and to, in turn, hear a comforting story of deliverance. They need someone not to pester, but to partner, not to badger but to believe, not to annoy but to anoint with the spirit of kindness and understanding, so they might come to realize that they matter to you, but mostly to God, who can gracefully handle any situation in which they find themselves.
Brothers and sisters, I encourage all of us to share in this “Spring Evangelism Surge,” and thereby reaffirm our own faith in God, assist others in their life challenges for the better, and expand the family of God, which is our sacred calling as followers of Jesus, the One. n

Three other testimonies described support they received following the first major event of Zion Hill’s 150th Anniversary Celebration. Drive through donations during the “Still Serving” Outreach event on March 12-13, 2022, included hundreds of cleaning supplies, diapers, hand sanitizers, cleaning wipes, food, blankets, and other needed items.
Ms. Tonnisha Lasalle, Operations Director for youthSpark thanked God for the blessing of their connection with Zion Hill. She told the congregation, “The cleaning supply drive that you hosted knocked our socks off.” She reported that they are still sharing those supplies.
Ms. Penny Black-Beard, Family Support Coordinator for Sheltering Arms, expressed her organization’s gratitude for the donations that reached far beyond their expectations, and allowed them to share their donated supplies with their other South Fulton Centers.
Ms. Valerie Hampton, Director of Programs and Facilities, Solomon’s Temple Foundation also declared that they are still using the supplies they received. She added that Zion Hill delivered the donations, helped with sorting, and delivered the supplies to their designated destinations.
Following the testimonies, the 2023 Outreach Ministry Day opened a new chapter in the annual celebration with the presentation of the first ever Outreach Ministry Day Award of a $2,000 check to Ms. Satira Hall, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Second Chance LLC for the organization’s commitment to serving veterans and homeless men in metropolitan Atlanta.
Before the message, Sister Latonia Johnson introduced the guest speaker, Reverend Dr. Ralph B. Watkins, as the first African American male to serve as a professor and Endowed Chair in Columbia Theological Seminary’s 200-year history. She described him as an author who is also known as the “Scholar with a Camera.”
As the service moved to the message, Reverend Watkins, a son of Zion Hill, provided a powerful lesson for igniting a “Power Surge.” He proclaimed, “If you want to be new, you got to do new.” Have you ever heard someone proclaim to you or someone else who cannot seem to get past a certain point in moving ahead? They told you that if you keep doing the same thing, you will get the same result? Well, that’s what Reverend Watkins’ message implied. If you want to grow in
Christ, you must identify ways to serve Him beyond just attending worship services.
Reverend Watkins provided a powerful example. He described his mother’s commitment to serve her community in Eatonville, Florida by providing a basketball hoop with a steel pole in her yard purchased with her own “hard-earned money” that had a “real net” and was secured to the ground with cement. “Pitch the Plastic!”
Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Acting in continuation of last year’s well received Earth Day campaign, the 2023 theme is again “Invest in Our Planet” and is focused on engaging governments, institutions, businesses and the more than 1 billion citizens who participate annually in Earth Day to do their part – everyone accounted for and everyone accountable.
In that vein, Zion Hill Planet Preservers ministry is proposing a campaign that everyone can participate in that will address one of the major problems facing our environment today – single use plastic! Ponder these facts if you will:
n Of the roughly 300 million tons of plastic produced each year, half consists of single-use items.
n Commonly consumed single-use plastics include beverage bottles, plastic shopping bags, disposable straws, disposable cups and packaging for a massive variety of consumer products.
n Alarmingly, scientists estimate that there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by weight in 2050.
n Unsightly single-use plastic litters our streets and communities and can be the first stage in a waste stream that enters our waterways.
n Single-use plastic pollution disproportionately affects marginalized communities and communities living in close proximity to plastic production and waste sites, constituting an environmental injustice.
Beginning on Sunday April 23, Zion Hill Earth Day, we invite our congregation and community to Invest in Our Planet, by taking part in what we are calling “Pitch the Plastic!” Given the dire conditions our planet is faced with, this is a very good time to use our discernment and determine just how much we really can do. We only have this one planet that God entrusted to us and it will take both big and small actions to reverse some of the damage we have done. More than 30 countries around the world have already banned single-use plastic grocery bags. Fast food company McDonald’s has pledged to switch to sustainable (non-single use plastic) packaging materials by the year 2025.
The city of South Fulton became the first Georgia municipality to require private businesses to cease distributing plastic bags. CoSF also banned single-use plastics, such as cups, food containers, bottles and straws, at city facilities. Many other large corporations like Nike, Disney, Burts Bees, Starbucks, Apple and
Dell to name a few, have found ways to Reduce – Recycle – Reuse – Remove. They have either decreased dependence on single-use plastics, or are finding ways to incorporate or manufacture other products with re-purposed plastic or found alternatives to using plastics altogether by prioritizing green initiatives and sustainability. Here are a few simple yet effective suggestions to help us “Pitch the Plastic!” in our lives:
n Stainless steel, glass, and platinum silicone, wood and bamboo are a few of the long lasting, durable and sustainable alternatives to plastic.
n Travel with a reusable water bottle or coffee container and metal or bamboo straws to replace place plastic ones.
n Always carry reusable shopping totes to avoid disposable plastic bags for groceries, veggies and other items.
n Shop at local farmer’s markets – food is fresher and it’s healthier for the environment.
n Cook at home to avoid plastic heavy take-out containers
n Look into composting and promote the circular economy.
Take a minute or two, think it over, pray about it, and see what God might reveal to you on how to “Pitch the Plastic!” and practice better Stewardship. As children of God, taking even the smallest step towards Creation Care is considered a holy step. n

Youth and Children’s Ministry Outreach Project:
On Outreach Sunday, March 19, 2023 Zion Hill’s Youth and Children’s ministry partnered with Sister Illya Menefee and Voices of Oluwa to distribute Blessing Bags. Blessing Bags are a unique service opportunity for Zion Hill’s children and youth to touch the lives of strangers in need, by blessing them with everyday essential items.
“Here at Zion Hill our church motto is “Living to Love and Loving to Serve”, in other words we are here and put on earth to serve and not to be served. We as Christians are supposed to help people. Helping people and loving people as Jesus did is our goal while we are here on earth,” explained Reverend Brenton Cox, our Youth & Children’s Ministry leader.
The Blessing Bags were assembled, packaged and distributed to the community by our own Zion Hill youth and children, volunteers and teachers who made sure, upon delivery, the recipients were greeted with love and smiles.
Blessing Bags
“If the church isn’t lending a helping hand like Jesus did then what is the purpose? I am so happy that at
Zion Hill we do more than sing songs and listen to Dr. Parker every Sunday. We help people in need by giving them food and items to survive. We go visit nursing homes and sing, sit, and pray with them. We help children in Africa with education and daily meals, we help preserve the community by planting trees and cleaning up the community. Zion Hill does so many things”, explains Reverend Cox.
When project Blessing Bag was completed, Reverend Cox noted that some of the children and teens expressed how giving Blessing Bags made them feel good, kind, and like they are making a difference. One child even made a connection between project Blessing Bag with Jesus feeding the multitude with two fish and five loaves of bread.
Reverend Cox would like to extend a special thank you to all the volunteers and teachers who helped make project Blessing Bag a success.

Outreach Ministry Sunday (continued from page 3)
added that her generosity sometimes included providing his friends and other neighborhood youth with meals that may have consisted of northern beans cooked with a ham hock and a little rice. She also made it clear that she didn’t provide that basketball goal just for him and his siblings but for them and all of their friends.
Reverend Watkins described it as all a part of “living Black in Eatonville, Florida.” Living Black, according to Reverend Watkins, meant you loved your people, you fed your people, you helped your people, and you didn’t consider it a sacrifice. The essence of his message was to throw out any of today’s society’s thoughts, which are often only about self and those
in immediate family circles.
What does serving others get for you?
Reverend Watkin emphasized that you receive a blessing from God, and that is a connection to Him? Your service brings glory to God’s name.
Reverend Watkins also emphasized, “If you are going to have a renewed mind, if you’re going to know what the good, acceptable, and perfect will of God is, you have to give God your reasonable service. As he put it, “The Holy Spirit moves in revelatory ways when you serve.”
Remember what the elders proclaimed, and Reverend Watkins predicted for your future when you serve God.
“When you serve the God of Freedom,
n You will know the will of God for your life.
n You will feed your faith.
n You will see the plans that God has for you.
n You will see your vision, write your vision, and run to fulfill your vision.
To experience your Power Surge toward transformation, use the strategy prescribed by Reverend Watkins. “Do some new stuff. You can’t keep doing what you’ve always done. God can’t stretch you and grow your faith if you don’t try God.”n

Power Surge Brunch for Women: An Empowering Experience Your Invitation is here!
Come experience the power of loving, praying, and serving as women gather in unity from the SIS (Sisters in Sync), Mothers’, and Prayer Ministries for a Power Surge Brunch Saturday, May 6, 2023, 11 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. in the Love Center Fellowship Hall.
As you contemplate how God will speak to your spirit during this spiritually empowering Brunch, you can enjoy a wonderful meal prepared by a caterer that serves in the Zion Hill Culinary Ministry, experience God ministering to your spirit through the Emcee, Sister Adina Martin, hear the Zion Hill Praise Ringers under the leadership of Sister Barbara Denson as they praise God through chimes, hear the melodious sounds of Zion Hill Harpist Camille Richardson, and receive a Christ inspired message from Minister Sebe Dalieh, guest speaker for the Brunch.
You will also see and experience praise through dance, or hear a testimony that may give you hope for the future for you or a loved one, and may inspire you to realize
your spiritual place of service for Christ, so if you’re unsure of where and how God wants you to serve, or you don’t think that you are qualified to serve, transform those thoughts and step out on faith that He has a role for you in His Kingdom.
The women of Zion Hill who serve in the SIS, Mothers’ and Prayer Ministries want you to experience a “Power Surge” and attend to learn how you can give God your best through service.
Acts 2:1-4 the “Day of Pentecost,” demonstrates the Power of God’s Holy Spirit when God’s people gather in unity for worship and service to Christ. Here is what Acts 2:1-4 says.
“When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from Heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues as of fire, appeared among them and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in
other languages as the spirit gave them.”
Can you imagine and visualize those Power Surge-filled moments provided by the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost?
The Power Surge Brunch also focuses on 2 Timothy 1:7 “God didn’t give us a spirit that is timid but one that is powerful, loving, and self-controlled (CEB-Common English Version). Don’t worry about whether you have a valuable role to play. God has gifted all His believers and servants with a role to serve inside and outside the walls of His Church. Be there to experience the Power Surge Brunch and, of course, the fun, fellowship, and door prizes.
For more information or tickets, please contact SIS Ministry Leader, Sandi Abbo, Mother’s Ministry Leader Beverly McCray, Ed.D., (678) 561-4488 or any member of the SIS or Mothers’ Ministries.

Atrial Fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation, also called A-fib, is an irregular heart rhythm that originates from an upper chamber of the heart. A-fib is the most common irregular heart rhythm in adults and often results in a rapid heart rate. A-fib is of great concern because it can lead to clots forming in the heart and these clots may then travel to the brain and cause a stroke. People with A-fib are five times more likely to have a stroke than persons without this condition. The risk for a stroke from A-fib increases with age. There are several types of A-fib, some forms last for only a short period and typically stop on their own, while other types last for a longer period of time and may become permanent.
Many patients with A-fib do not have symptoms. Common symptoms that may occur with A-fib are listed below:
Symptoms of A-fib
n Light headedness
n Dizziness
n Fatigue
n Palpitations (sensation of a fast,
pounding or irregular heartbeat)
n Shortness of breath
n Chest pain
n Black-out/fainting spells (syncope)
RISK FACTORS AND causes of A-fib include the following:
n Age > 50 years
n Family history of A-fib
n High blood pressure (hypertension)
n Heart disease (birth defects involving the heart, prior heart surgery, heart failure, prior heart attack, blockages in the blood vessels of the heart)
n Chronic lung diseases
n Physical stress from surgery
n Severe infections
n Thyroid disease (typically an overactive thyroid gland)
n Chronic kidney disease
n Obesity
n Sleep apnea (difficulty breathing when sleeping)
n Moderate to heavy alcohol use
n Smoking
n Use of stimulants or caffeine
AN ELECTROCARDIOGRAM (EKG) is used to diagnose A-fib. Patients found to have A-fib will then undergo several other tests to help determine the cause for their A-fib. An echocardiogram (ECHO) is typically done in patients with A-fib to look for structural abnormalities in the heart. A-fib is treated using one or more of the following options:
n Medications to get the heart rhythm to return to normal (antiarrhythmic medications)
n Shock therapy (electrical cardioversion) to get the heart rhythm to return to normal Usually before doing this an ultrasound of the heart is performed to rule out clots in the heart that could migrate and cause a stroke when the heart starts beating normally
n Procedures that destroy the tissue causing the abnormal heart rhythm, thus allowing the heart rhythm to return to normal
n Medications to slow the heart rate. These are typically given along with blood thinners
LIVING A HEALTHY lifestyle reduces the chances for heart disease and thus makes it less likely to develop A-fib. The following strategies are recommended to help prevent A-fib:
n Manage stress levels
n Avoid excessive intake of alcohol or caffeine
n Abstain from smoking
n Maintain a healthy diet and healthy weight
n Exercise regularly
