COVID-19 Variants and What I Need to Know About Traveling
A
s we all have been dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, and now having some hope with the implementation of the new vaccines that have been created to combat this lethal virus, there have been variants to this virus that have emerged throughout the country and abroad that have been of concern. Here is some information about COVID-19 variants and CDC travel recommendations to help you better protect yourself: What causes a virus to change to a new variant? ■
■ ■ ■
■
■
Viruses are very small particles that can multiply and cause disease in people, other animals and plants. All viruses change over time. A virus mutates when it replicates or makes copies of itself. A “variant” occurs when there are one or more new mutations of the original virus. creases when a virus is widely circulating in a population and causing many infections. Multiple variants of the virus that causes COVID-19 are circulating throughout the world and within the United States.

efore I say anything about reassembling, let me thank each of you from the depths of my heart for your continued prayers and support throughout this COVID ordeal over the last year and a quarter. First, I thank my wife, Shelia, for her steadfast love, care, and encouragement, especially during some of those most pressing and uncertain times, along with my children, Larry and Asha, and my granddaughter, Laila, who probably unknowingly brought much joy and stress relief. Members of the Zion Hill staff also deserve tremendous credit for keeping us informed, connected and operating as a body in Christ Jesus under some unprecedented and often highly pressurized circumstances. Also, we recognize the COVID-19 Task Force that has done meticulous research, offered informed advice, and met periodically, sometimes with very short notice, to help bring us to this point. Further, I express my solemn appreciation for so many of the leaders of our congregation, who took it upon yourselves to keep in contact with the members of your group and provide much needed fellowship. To the entire Family of Zion Hill, I say thank you, for your spiritual, virtual, and financial presence, even while we were absent from one another. Now, after much sincere prayer and meticulous deliberation, we have set a tentative day for reassembling for one worship service on Sunday, August 8, 2021 at 9:30 am. At this time, all other Church activities will remain virtual until further notice. While numerous precautions will be taken for this hallowed gathering of the Zion Hill Family, at least three stand out:
n We will require all worshippers to wear masks
n We will practice some measure of social distancing
n We will have testing available the week leading up to August 8
This date was by no means arbitrarily selected. First, we considered that of the more than 1000 respondents to the Zion Hill COVID-19 Vaccination Survey more than 90% have been vaccinated. This rate far exceeds that of Fulton County, the state of Georgia, and the Nation. However, it does not show the full picture because the number of people that took the survey comprise only about 25% of our total congregation. Second, we thought it prudent to wait until after the two major summer holidays, Memorial Day (5/31/21) and Independence Day (7/4/21), to see if there are any significant spikes in cases of COVID-19, especially in the County and State. If cases rise sharply after these periods of heightened interaction we would have to reassess our plans for reassembling. Third, we wanted to take as many reasonable measures as possible to increase the safety of our gathering – such as purchasing and setting up safety equipment, installing proper signage, engaging in some educational and training activity, providing clear communication about how we move forward in reassembling, and much more. Realizing that some may still need to take precautions for a variety of reasons, and thus would like to wait for a while longer before returning for in-person worship, I want you to know that as your pastor I fully understand and want you to follow the guidance of your God, your healthcare provider, and your conscience. You can continue to share in the fellowship online as a part of what we might call “The Great Cloud of Virtual Witnesses” as you have had the opportunity to do for the past 15 months. As we get closer to the time of reassembling, we will send out another survey asking about those who intend to come to that first regathering on August 8, along with one or two additional pieces of information that will assist us in coming together as safely and effectively as possible. Over the next few weeks, we will convey further guidance on how to better prepare physically and spiritually for this momentous occasion. In the meantime, be extraordinarily diligent in prayer and meditation that we will operate in the marvelous will of our kind and gracious Provider. Praise God, brothers and sisters! n —Pastor Parker

Sister Jeri Griffin Appointed to Baptist Leadership Role
S
ister Jeri Griffin will serve as the new Women’s President of the General Missionary Baptist Convention, Inc. (GMBC) – District 5 of which Zion Hill Baptist Church is a member. Sister Griffin received her appointment from the current President, Reverend Eddie L. Bright, PhD. Headquartered in Atlanta, The General Missionary Baptist Convention is a part of the National Baptist Convention and is comprised of Cobb, Dekalb, Fulton and Rockdale counties. As a six year member of Zion Hill and member of the Mothers Ministry, Sis. Griffin has traveled to the National Baptist Convention for a number of years, including accompanying our late beloved Mother Ann Henton. As far as her goals in her new role are concerned, Sister Griffin says she wants to educate more women about the role of the GMBC and the services provided to local communities served by member churches. Her primary goal is to attract more women for participation in District 5, particularly younger ones. She acknowledges that younger women may have tight schedules because of their regular church responsibilities as well as working and caring for their young families. However, she believes more would be interested if they knew more about the services provided by the GMBC to communities through member churches. n Congratulations Sister Griffin! — Submitted by Sis. Felicia Church
