2023 POWER SURGE BRUNCH
Habari Gani? (What’s the news?)
The news is that the women of Zion Hill gathered in the name of Jesus on Saturday May 6, 2023 for the 2023 ‘Power Surge Brunch’. The Power Surge Brunch was co-hosted by the SIS Women’s Ministry, The Zion Hill Mothers of the Church Ministry and the Zion Hill Prayer Ministry.
The women came beautifully adorned and with beautiful spirits.
‘The Purple Tent’ is a modern term used to describe a place where multi-generational women gather intentionally to experience self-care, to share stories and experiences amongst other women, to be inspired, encouraged and uplifted – to be empowered. The Power Surge Brunch served as the 2023 Zion Hill ‘Purple Tent’.
The melodic and soothing music of harpist Camille Richardson and the Zion Hill’s Praise Ringers set the mood of calmness, peace and rejoicing and fed our psychic bodies. Our physical bodies were fed by the culinary wonders of Gray and Gray Catering. Our spiritual bodies were washed in the word of God presented by Prophetess Sebe Delieh. She enthu-

Congratulations! Next?
To each member of our church family who experienced a graduation in 2023 we say, “Congratulations!” This often-used term is derived from the compound Latin word congratulari, combining “con,” which means ‘with’ and “gratulari,” which means to ‘show joy’ (from the Latin gratus, ‘pleasing’). Hence, when we employ the concept ‘congratulations’ in honor of you who have completed a course of study at a particular educational institution, we express or show joy with you for your accomplishments and want you to know that it pleases us greatly. Furthermore, this word permits us to articulate our fulfillment of the Apostle Paul’s advice to “Rejoice with those who rejoice” (Romans 12:15). Therefore, we take this moment and space to celebrate how God worked through you and for you, providing strength, stamina, intellectual ability, and the dedication to finish this crucial task. Again, “Congratulations!”

Graduations, however, not only occasion reasons for family and community celebration, they also pose to every graduate this important question: “What next?” With this laudable achievement comes the responsibility to use it for a greater good. For some that greater good will immediately consist of pursuing further study at a higher level or in another field. For others it means using what has been learned to obtain employment, start a business, or strive for another life goal; thereby, improving one’s own lot in life and hopefully that of others. Whatever your “next” might be, we pray fervently that God will order your steps, causing your personal light to shine even more brilliantly, that others may see the good you do and, consequently, give glory to our gracious Creator (Matthew 5:16). n
Best wishes to all classes of 2023 for a blessed, bright, and consequential future.

Power Surge Brunch (continued from page 1)
siastically encouraged us to expect daily blessings, to actively look for our blessings and to receive the powerful blessings that God has for each of us. The Power Surge of the Lord was present and received by the women of Zion Hill.
The women of Zion Hill were gifted with an array of door prizes. The joy was so contagious.
Oh, but that’s not all. Our very own
First Lady, Mrs. Shelia Parker, gave the women an awesome dose of encouragement and a boost of excitement as she rendered closing remarks to the women of Zion Hill. Hey, did you catch that nugget of hope she dropped when she said, “We need a retreat”? Prayerfully that can be manifested in the next few years. Stay tuned.
Habari Gani? (What’s the news?) The news is that The 2023 Power Surge Brunch
was a great success. The women were empowered and refreshed. The women of three ministries of Zion Hill got in the trenches together and sponsored/hosted a purposeful and positive event. We must now take that power we received into every ministry of Zion Hill Baptist Church, into our families and into the community the Lord has called us to serve. n

Attitude makes a BIG difference!
In 1975, Diana Ross and Billy Dee Williams starred in a film called Mahogany. It was about a young model and fashion designer who became an overnight success, but her abysmal attitude destroyed her relationship with her friends and colleagues in the fashion industry.
“It is your attitude that, more than your aptitude, that will determine your altitude.” You may have heard this quote before. What it essentially means is that to be “successful” in any area in life you need to have the right attitude to approach any task or job. Attitude is the little thing that makes a big difference. Diana Ross’s character in Mahogany fell from the top because of her attitude. A good attitude, good character can sometimes open doors that a college degree, resume, or talent cannot.
I graduated high school almost twenty years ago and ironically one of our graduation songs was “Do You Know Where You’re Going To”, the theme song from the film Mahogany sung by Diana Ross. This
song plays in my mind from time to time because the song is about evaluating life’s journey, asking if what lies ahead is what you really want. Ross’ character finds that fame and fortune is not what makes her happy. Society has a way of telling us what we can be, what we can do, how far we can climb, and even what “success” looks like. Sometimes we are placed in a box that will keep us restricted when God has given us wings to soar like eagles.
Graduates, as you find your way in this world, whatever path you take, I admonish you to keep God first. When you keep God first you remember where all your help comes from. When you keep God first it is impossible to believe that everything you have and accomplished is because of self. Scripture states, “For by grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God
has assigned.” (Romans 12:3, NRSV)
Be a life learner. Learning does not stop because you have graduated school. Learning stops when we become full of ourselves and think we know all there is to know. Abigail Adams said, “Learning is not attained by chance; it must be sought for with ardor and diligence.”
As you journey through life, whether you are transitioning from childhood to adulthood, or seeking out new opportunities I want to forewarn you that you will experience good days as well as bad days; there will be ups and downs; you will cry and you will laugh; new people will enter your life and some people will leave your life. However, God, the Sustainer, the Burden Bearer, the Lifter will always be there.
So, below is a bible cheat sheet that will help along the way. Feel free to cut this out and place it somewhere you can reference. n

Zion Hill Celebrates Mothers
Zion Hill celebrated Mother’s Day with a sanctuary filled with worshippers honoring the love and sacrifices of mothers. Reverend Michael Traylor described the day as an opportunity to honor and bless mothers. He proclaimed, “Next to the Lord’s Divine love, the one who we can call friend is a mother’s love, her sacrificial love, her nurturing and encouraging love. We thank God. We bless God for our mothers.”
Reverend Kevin Jackson followed with prayer requesting that God abide within the service and worshippers and asked that God “be the daily bread of mothers and their source of spiritual and physical strength. He asked a special blessing for single moms who must also serve as fathers to their children and for God to allow their “big” arms to surround their children who may never know their earthly father but through their mother’s love would learn about God as their heavenly father.
Following praise from the music ministry, Reverend Jackson returned with a special tribute to mothers that focused on the teachings of a Godly mother that centered on her prayers and declarations that even on a bad day, as a child you were never alone and that children attending worship services was not optional, but mandatory.
He continued with a tribute to the teachings of Godly mothers who emphasized commitment to family and community. When you consider Godly love, he reminded worshippers that the Godly love of mothers was evident through their sacrifices and their examples of strength as they taught their children how to endure. He also did not forget to pay tribute to Godly mothers who made it a point to wear those fancy church hats, also known as “crowns.”
Before this article moves into Pastor Aaron L. Parker’s message, consider this question. What would you think of a mother who would ask Christ to elevate
her sons above the rest of His disciples by allowing one to sit at his right hand and the other at his left in His Kingdom? In his Mother’s Day sermon titled “A Mother’s Request,” Pastor Parker provided a compelling alternate perspective regarding the request of the mother of James and John, the sons of Zebedee and the indignant responses of the rest of the disciples in Matthew, Chapter 20:21-24. In Mark’s version of the request to sit at Christ’s right and left hand, the request was described as coming from James and John, which received a stern rebuke.
Before beginning the central focus of his sermon, Pastor Parker described the request as a misunderstanding of Christ’s mission. He explained, “The disciples thought that Christ would soon enter Jerusalem, overthrow the Roman occupation, and reestablish Israel to its Glory Days under King David, who had reigned over a thousand years earlier.” Pastor

Parker emphasized that Christ came not to be served, but to serve. He added, “Instead of greedily grasping for crass political power, he sought with all he possessed to empower people. His kingdom, in fact, might be better described today as a community for it was to be characterized not by coercion but by compassion not by lordship but by love.”
Moving back to the text related to the request made by the mother of James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Pastor Parker declared that despite the criticism of the mother of James and John, there were still some positive aspects related to her request on behalf of her sons. First and foremost, according to his sermon, this mother deserved to be commended. Pastor Parker asserted that she recognized that there was “something special” about Jesus based on what she possibly heard from her sons or from her own experiences. Worshippers received several scenarios that may have shaped this mother’s thinking:
n She remembered her sons’ declarations of how Jesus found them by the Sea of Galilee with their father, Zebe -
dee, and urged them to follow Him that he might make them “fishers of men.”
n Maybe James and John described to their mother the day when a windstorm arose on the sea swamping their boat while Jesus who had been asleep, rose and rebuked the wind and the sea bringing about “complete calm. “
n James and John may have told their mother of their experience on a mountaintop with Jesus and Peter when they watched the transfiguration of Jesus as his face “shone like the sun and his clothes became dazzling white. “Then, as they watched, Moses and Elijah appeared out of a cloud and the voice of God declared, “This is my Son. Listen to Him.”
n Maybe she witnessed Jesus healing the sick, raising the dead casting out demons and cleansing the lepers.
Pastor Parker also noted that this mother may have been impressed by Jesus’s teachings to the crowd, his forgiveness of sinners who repented and his feeding the hungry crowd. She may have seen him as one having authority and recognized that even the demons obeyed him.
Similarly, Pastor Parker reminded his listeners that so many of mothers of the past and the present have trusted Jesus in times of trouble and guided their children to him as an example to be followed. Additionally, mothers have studied His word for insight and direction. They trusted and worshipped him through songs of praise and prayer in the sanctuary as well as their homes.
Can you see the positive attributes of the mother of the Sons of Zebedee wanting only the best for her children and the fact that she saw only the best in Jesus? She may have misunderstood Christ’s mission in coming to earth in human form, but she recognized His miracles, the wisdom and authority of his teachings and his unconditional love for humanity. Loving, faithful and Godfearing mothers want only the best for their children.
Visit YouTube, Facebook, or BoxCast to hear Pastor Parker’s thought-provoking message about the mother of James and John, the sons Zebedee as well as the entire Mother’s Day program. n
