PROJECT VISION AND CONCEPT the pattern...

Vision: In a rapidly urbanizing world in which inequalities are underscored by the lack of access to resources, Team AZA stands firmly behind the commitment and mission set forth by 3 Strands, Icon and Overland to identify a sustainable solution for affordable single-family housing. Paying homage to the Ashland School that once stood on site, the legacy of its name is carried forward by The Ashland Co-Op - a unique model that sets the tone for visionary yet affordable urban living, a place of belonging for those who choose to embrace the benefits of a ‘living’ community. Inter-generational, flexible and adaptable, The Ashland Co-Op is resilient to accommodating shifting needs over time.

Site Design: In addition to lining the southern edge of the site along 24th Street with retail/ commercial program our team made the decision to occupy the South-Eastern edge along Lawn Avenue with amenities that serve the neighborhood at large. This decision was made in response to voices of citizens in the neighborhood per the Ashland Reuse Assessment carried out by the KCPS. The massing is designed to create a taller urban edge along the street while opening out into a balcony that overlooks the inner courtyard space. A series of sight lines from this vantage point foster communication between neighbors while generating a sense of security akin to the concept of ‘eyes of the street’. On the ground floor, a progression of spaces begins with the most public (street) through the private (house) and out to the semi-public (courtyard). A series of carefully articulated thresholds that are comfortable and inviting, enable easy transitions.

Site wide sustainable strategies such as green infrastructure for storm water management, creation of habitat and capturing of light and breezes through orientation are implemented. House Design: The flow of spaces on the first flow begins with an entry off the street through a porch, customized by the use of color into a cozy, well-lit double height vestibule. The vestibule then opens out into semi-private functions of living, dining and kitchen with a view into the inner courtyard and entry to a shared side-yard. A guest bedroom and bath on this floor are imagined as flex space that may be converted into a home office/study or playroom. Depending on the family’s situation, this room may be rented out to extend or receive support from the community.

A flight of stairs in the living room brings one up to the more private floor that has two bedrooms and a full bath. Inspired by the barn typology, the house holds many functions under one big prominent roof that brings in light and air.

Our team embraces the technology of 3D printing and envisions its augmentation through the use of prefabricated construction. We imagine the first floor to be 3D printed with a pre-fab modular housing component for the second floor. We propose the use of modular bathroom and kitchen equipment to further expedite the construction process. Sustainable strategies at the building scale include capturing rainwater for irrigation, appropriate size and position of openings for cross-ventilation, responsible material selection to minimize embodied energy, thermal performance of external envelope and acoustical impact of internal layout. Our priority is to ensure a high-quality indoor environment for all users of the building.
