01 Rotation-Community Center Architecture Design, Harlem, New York Studio Critic: Hilary Sample Partner: Hanyi Liu Responsible for concept development, drawings, physical model-making Harlem is a relatively disfranchized community and its population keeps growing. The project is situated in the Harlem community in the 145th Street, Nicholas Avenue, near the Harlem School of the Arts. We propose to expand Harlem School of the Arts by adding performance space, housing units, art studios and maker space. The project focuses on exploring the transition and other possibilities of public and private space by designing a special structure that rotates 90 degree on each floor. It allows the public space in the building to be more open and private space to be more flexible.
The first floor, which is open and dynamic, activates the public area on the site ( the orange area).
Compared with the existing apartments, the private space ( the orange area) is open and flexible, which also encourages communications among residents.
My bedroom will be much larger after removing this wall! Tom, why don’t you put down your PS4 and meet your friends downstairs? Finally I have my own room to practice my dancing.
The trusses can support everything and easy to construct!

Public and private space are defined by the trusses that rotate 90 degree on each floor and there are four different examples of unit combinations. Walls in red are removable so the residents can adjust their units according to their different needs.

2000s Hotel Water Consumption
02 Water Urbanism Architecture Design, Lanzarote, Spain Studio Critic: Andres Jaque Partner: Jing Du, Konrad Tai Responsible for researching, concept development, drawings, physical model-making Lanzarote is always an arid island. After the introduction of desalination plant in 1961, tourism had a significant boost, causing a substantial decline of agriculture. Eventually, this leads to the segregation of agriculture and water. Our group is proposing a project of rethinking water consumption and management on the island. We tried to shift the idea of tourism to short term residences, relink the segregated elements to form a new system and turn hidden infrastructures into habitable infrastructure and landscape.
Filtration Process and Short Term Residence Filtration Process is the first step in the sea water desalination process. Sea water is pumped to the roof of the short term residential house where it can be filtered and then stored in the lava bubles. Cactus are planted for further filtration.
Primary Clarifier Process and Urban Potato Farms
Sludge from the waste water is removed in the primary clarifiers. After the process, potato farms are irrgated.
Reverse Osmosis Process and Water Park Sea water goes through the reverse osmosis pipe where salt is extracted. In this step, reververse osmosis pipes are built as the sculptures in the water park. Salt is gathered in the shallow pools. Vineyards are also irrigated with the water from the water park.
Aerotion Process and restaraurts Oxygen is required in the aerotion process. In this process, algae domes are built as the main supply of the oxygen and also accommodate residents. In the digesters, biogas is produced and then stored in the balloons. Windmills are installed to generate electricity for the residents.

03 Event and Trigger Architecture Design, Manhattan, New York Studio Critic: Steven Holl, Dimitra Tsachrelia Partner: Jian Zheng Responsible for concept development, drawings, physical model-making This program focuses on experiments in the language of architecture inspired by music written by Edgard Varèse. Based on the different elements in the music, a rube goldberg machine is made to simulate different sounds. Language of architecture is then produced. Poeme Electronique is a piece of electronic music written by Edgard Varèse. A model is made to visualize the electronic sounds in the music. A ball will run through the model to simulate the music. Pictures on the right are taken from the model. Then we abstract these photos.

After the abstraction, movements of the ball are visualized into space. There are 6 types of movements and 6 types of space. Since there are short sessions in the music to connect the long sessions, there are also triggers that trigger the movements between the space.
East West Section
Event space are reorganized and the surfaces of these events are also used. The curves of these surfaces form the shape of musical auditorium. A shared area of gallery and reading space is also formed.

04 Floating Community Special Awards in 2016 Resilience Design in Asia Architecture Design and Urban Design, Valenzuela, Philippine Studio Critic: Xiao Yiqiang Partner: Wanting Li, Haozhuo Li, Yicheng Wang, Zhihao LilangResponsible for concept development, drawings, physical model-making The project is situated in Valenzuela, Philippine. Proposals of urban design, architecture and building technology are utilized to endow, support, amplify, and maintain a community's resiliency in light of natural disaster event. To achieve this goal, strategies of varying scales were developed to address the issues of vulnerable communities in the Valenzuela City.

Water Gate A public center is built beside the water gate. When the water gate is not working, residents can enjoy movies in the open space.
Houses Construction As the houses are modular, it is easy to build a new floating house in a short time.
Floating Houses Houses float as the water level goes up. Residents are save in their new houses.
Fish Farming Fishermen are farming fish in a community in the north part of the site.
City Wetland Park Vegetation is planted to purified the water. People enjoy their leisure time in the park.
Public Shelter Public centers provide shelters for residents living in the original houses.

05 Penetration-Tourist Center Architecture Design, Tromso , Norway Studio Critic: Leng Tianxiang Situated in the rural area, the tourist center is a shelter for aurora viewing and sauna. The key concept is to project the aurora through the building. The aurora light could be perceive as a type of material that penetrating the building, through different types of voids basing on different program (aurora viewing or sauna). The other natural elements (the lake, the topo) and the local material also integrated into this conversation, thus architecture turn into a transparent object penetrated by its context.
The route to the site is linear along the topography and the river.

Connected to the main body of the building, there are two types of space in this circular cone , both of them are created with a similar structure of Lavvu. The inner part , a sauna house, is an enclosed space while the other part , a place for viewing aurora borealis, is more open.
The Inner Part Aurora borealis penetrates the inner part of the circular cone through a round skylight and people see the lights in a space permeated by mist as they are enjoying sauna.
The Outer Part The outer part of the circular cone is fully exposed to the aurora borealis, which is a sharp contrast with the inner part.

06 Intersection-Factory Renovation Architecture Design, Guangzhou, China Studio Critic: Gang Song Situated in an obsolete industrial area, original factories are to be renovated into a fashion center. The key concept of the building is to transform the space of fashion show with a similar method utilized in the paingting Nude Descending A Staircase, No.2. Different angles of the nude are shown in the painting to illustrate the element of time and the audience can also perceive the painting in 3 dimensions. So the fashion show is designed to present the show in multi-dimensions.
The fashion center is built by intersecting new walls into the obsolete factories, Original walls represent order and history while new walls break the order and create new relationship between walls and walls.

1. Figure-Ground What we see through a parallel wall can be interpreted as pictures.
2. Overlap When a picture overlaps another picture, there are contradictions on interpreting the dimension of space, people tend to imagine what is behind the walls.
3. Intersect A new dimension of space is created when walls intersect each other. An object can be seen at the end of different viewpoints, which enable us to perceive the depth of space.

The audience can see the models straightly or through the holes on the walls. According to the different layouts of fashion shows, the audience can perceive the rhythms of the show, which is similar to the sheet music.

07 Insertion-Wooden Hut Construction Work, Guangzhou, China Partner: Wanting Li, Huijie Lai, Linxi Li Responsible for concept development, drawings, physical model-making This project is a wooden construction for exhibition , gathering and rest. The module of the construction is 240mm. This module decides the space of the components of the construction and the size of the construction (3600mm Ă— 2400mm). As a modular hut, it seeks to develop different types of space by inserting wooden planks. In the construction, Walls are made of the same components and huts can be assembled freely.

08 Piling Up Fashion and architecture Design, Guangzhou , China Partner: Wanting Li Responsible for concept development, drawings, physical model-making We design the clothes first and architecture is designed with the same method in designing clothes. We apply simple units in architecture and these units as a whole become our architecture. The exterior of the architecture owns a similar texture with our clothes while the interior space is more complex and cater for the need of different function.
