DESIGN FOR BLIND Blind Tableware To help blind friends to eat conveniently and with a little hassle. Time consuming- 4 weeks

01

TOPIC SELECTION This project required us to look at unfamiliar user issues. After researching the area, I decided to focus on the problem affecting blind people when dining.

DESIGN THINKING To help Mr. Wu conveniently get his favorite dishes.

FINDINGS First face to face interview 1. That the needs of blind people are exactly the same as sighted. 2. Blind people are forced to use equipment designed for sighted people. 3. I should seek a practical and low cost solution if it is to be effective. 4. Beauty will be achieved through being useful, not decorative. Second Interview lunch together 1. Cannot read the menu 2. Had difficulty in ordering his favorite dishes. 3. Don’t know exactly where the dishes. 4. All food are put together and as a result, their tastes are mixed up. 5. Chopsticks are hard to handle. 6. Cannot locate the food in his own plate. 7. Dropped his tools twice. Object : Mister Shuang WU 26 Working in Beijing blind barrier-free service center

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT After careful consideration on the results of the interview, I made some sketching and remodeling of how to improve the ability of a blind person. The result would be: MR WU can easily use my designed to tool and enjoy dinner in a manner he wants.

DESIGN FOR PENPAL Penpal Sending hand-written message through the use of penpal. Time consuming- half a year

02

TOPIC SELECTION With the constant advances of communication channels such as instant messaging, text messages and email, The emotions and feelings that can be seen in a handwritten lletter are becoming lost. The art of handwriting - especially for the purpose of communication - is slowly becoming a forgotten art. With my project, I hope to bridge the gap between analogue and digital communications, providing users with a convenient and efficient channel to get their message across, without losing personality and emotion along the way.

RESEARCH Investigation and research initiate a small activity among the students: l through the WeChat, we let them use the handwriting characters and let them feel and enjoy the warm and amiable feeling of handwriting. Initially, it will combine the traditional handwriting with the modern media. Although it is simple, it is visualized that it will get through specific design, direction and purspos. It was realized that the combination of the application of technology and the design of the handwritten products got the best expression of functional design combining the investigation and design direction

DESIGN DIRECTION One end of the pen is for writing. The pen contains no ink or graphite, and so the user can utilise any surface he or she pleases. The other end is for projecting messages by utilising a rapidly moving laser beam. As with the writing side, any surface can be projected on. SEND sender write message send message write on anywhere

RECEIVE receiver receiving message project message project on anywhere

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Expression through the use of shape. This is about the right design language which can tell the user what the product can do and how to use it.

Co-operated with undergraduate students from Peking University to molding the Penpal model.

PROTOTYPING We presented the word through laser projection technology to make sure the words are clear in any background. Succeed in overcoming trembling, not continuously, after that we can projection the active words; show the person in writing posture, finally, we can connect with client connections to present their hand writing words.

Infrared scanning see the trace on pad One key send direction light projection inform Link the computer to transfer files

FINAL LOOK Word, like a man, can express his characteristics, personally and emotions through handwriting. It speaks the words of the heart and talk like a person. MaterialďźšABS

DESIGN FOR BONE CHINA China Clock Floor Wind Bell Combined the Bone China materials features and product function to design the new product Time consuming- 2 months

03

INSPIRATION Saddle behind the curtain and the reed mashes took me designing soul, so that I can try to catch the traditional Chinese beauty mind in these two products’ imagination. This project was about using traditional materials and techniques to achieve a new sensory effect.

Bone china

Look

TOPIC SELECTION Bone china is a type of soft-paste porcelain that is composed of bone ash, feldspathic material, and kaolin. High levels of whiteness and translucency, and very high mechanical strength and chip resistance are all central features. Combined these typical characteristics, I made two products: Clock and Windbell so that we can feel relationships between material and function, Chinese culture and product design. Listen

CONCEPT The concept is to express time in a new way. The minute hand on the clock exterior is visible all the time. The hour and second hand are only visible when the lamp inside is illuminated. We can hear sound of wind after we walk by touching Phragmites(common reed).

WORKING PROCESS The more thin and transparency in bone China of Dial plate, the more clear time we can see and more beauty we feel. But the hardest part is the material holding flat, and without any collapse (sink) during burning. We got a suitable structure and stable method to fix the dial plate. I found fantastic sounds from ceramic during the clay processing and firing. So I created a floor wind bell. We can hear sound of wind after we walk by touching Phragmites(common reed) Modeling / white bone porcelain glazed and baked / grinding / assembling

Trialed several times to keep smoothness and reach the perfect thicknvess of 1.2mm.

t .

The more collecting sounds in process, the better sounds making by smaller solid bone china can be collected.

FINAL LOOK Time show in and out, touched wind ring sound, added more fun and leisurely inside the room. Material: Bone china & Wood & LED & Watch movement & Sound control Bone china & Carbon fiber

ophile RESEARCH Beginning with plant a flower, I found that plant has Yin and Yang aspects, i.e. yang "sunny side" and yin "shady side". So I choose the right plant after I plant flowers for some days.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Using imagination, I consider the plant growing under dark or light environment in all angle, I draw the sketch and model first, and mokeup the whole thinking, then I wish to make the interesting product which completed belong to the plant.

INTRODUCTION Although they are all Succulents, has their own favorite sunshine environment, they cannot be planted in one pot. Separating the plants will keep them healthier. When we close the curtain, the plant in the cannot get windows light; so open a window for them, that they can always enjoy the sunshine.

DESIGN FOR SURVIVAL Earthquake proof helmet To increase the survivor’s living rate during earthquake Time consuming- 3 months

05

TOPIC SELECTION Earthquakes are common in some areas of China. It cause loss of property and took countless lives. This made me decide to design a self-rescue helment. Except for the cover function, this can be use as safety mask, emergency water balloon and other self-rescue electric equipment.

Material needs

Living water - 1.5 liter water in extreme environment for each person Dust protector - work out for victim’s difficulty in breathing, chocking and wheezing. Living guide - earthquake self rescue and emergency rescue knowledge on time

sufferer needs Fear - Nervous and scary problem caused by sudden accident

psychological needs

Helplessness - Don’t know what gonna do Repeat the memory - recalling past events again and again Disappoints - ong term trapped will easier to feel disappoint

HARDWARE ELECTRONICS

RESEARCH ELECTRONICS

Victims might hardly get any help or rescue within 72 hours in disaster. This rescue product efficient assembling and smaller size will help for survivor in short and limited time. After the disaster, these products also can help victim has positive motivating movements.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Earthquake is unstoppable nature disaster, and hardly to predict. By now, the objective of rescue product is trying to get more space for live safety cabinet instead of self rescue. So this new product is focus on the self rescue equipment, to use for small and medium sized self rescue tools. It aims to increase the chances of survival.
