01 CANARY WHARF INVERTED LIVE-WORK SCHEME AFTER AUTOMATION Undergraduate Thesis Advisor: Johanna Muszbek FALL 2019

It’s 2050. 10 million jobs have been lost to automation. Such a shift has resulted in structured unemployment, changing the meaning of work and its relationship to the home. Subsequently, large scale office buildings have become redundant, and these architectural dinosaurs can now be manipulated in response to the emerging lifestyles that result from automation and extenuate London’s housing crisis. By transposing existing housing typologies onto the infrastructural skeleton left of the redundant office tower I set about to create a new typology—a hybrid of housing that accentuates the importance of public space and the new breed of community that will coexist on this architectural dinosaur. Community that are no longer defined by class but by their relationship to work. The final outcome of the design process addresses the local and the global—both a hybrid of new live-work typologies as well as a set of rules that will enable the 21st Century Auto-monument to colonise largescale office towers on a global scale.

A Machine for Working Men A daily routine analysis states that workers are only provided Highly sought-after individuals whose jobs have not being affected by automation. They live fast paced work-centred lifestyles and will benefit from the increased wage gap brought about by structured unemployment.

The Glass Dinosaur The footprint of canary wharf is massive compared to any other worldwide CBDs. The shift of work from large-scale office buildings to the home will leave skyscrapers uneconomical, underused and redundant. A legacy of architectural dinosaur will be left that can be‘destroyed, transformed or respected’.

A Housing Crisis Demographic shows a brief comparison of household, ownership, income and occupation between canary wharf, tower hamlets and London. Giving the result of a housing shortage and the considerable separation of workplace and residence in canary wharf. A work-live scheme is therefore proposed.

Housing Scale Study

Re-Imaging Blueprint In order to reuse over 1.5 million square metres of office space Canary Wharf contains, a detailed infrastructure map with location of every column and their cores was drawn. It gives a solid foundation for the following idea of changing building footprints. The greenery, roads and building outlines form complementary spaces that can be alternated within each other.

The live-work complex in this project is made of 4 basic live-work units and other large shared facilities ranging from short-term to long-term housing type(diversity and sustainable design), free public library with working space to private self-learning studio (inclusive design), private living unit and shared housing units.

Therefore, a street on the sky is developed, the recycling process contains remaining almost all the old cores as residential lifts and façade retention of one Canada square building, HSBC building (5 Canada square) and Citi Bank building (8 Canada Square) as a memorial symbol of the past.

The project will help to ensure that the design of new high-density development contributes toward a high-quality of life. It will also enable stakeholders, such as residents, Members, developers and officers, to better understand the role of design in high-density residential and mixeduse development.

One Canada Square's iconic curtain wall pyramid roof will be kept along with its stunning facade. The brief of this project is to help the future employee and those who lost their jobs to gain their core competitiveness in order to adapt the future challenges by providing them freedom to choose their social network and to learn from each other.

Rough Site Model Model of One Canada Square(middle tower), five (left corner, HSBC) and eight (up right corner, CitiBank). Average height is above 200m and their floors are around 50.

Golden Lane Estate Engaged Take out buildings floors and leave the cores. The outline of golden lane estate engages from the ground floor. Both site and golden lane model are in the same scale.

Different Directions Engagement The same scale models fit in the site in both 90,180 and 270 rotation angles. It is not only a fun coincidence but also a reasonable fact to believe there exits certain logic where urban fabric and building blocks create a precise figure-ground engagement.

Final Conceptual Model The overall strategy of circulation contains theories of ‘walk to’ and ‘walk through’ point, by which can increase the relation of different building types and within the whole estate in order to make full use of intelligence capital. In terms of overall plan layout, it follows the gradient from public center to private housing units.

02 THE ARROW OF CONSCIOUSNESS INFORMATION ENTROPY: FROM UNCERTAINTY TO CENTAINTY SUMMER STUDIO SUMMER 2020

Entropy is one of the few quantities in the physical sciences that require a particular direction for time, sometimes called an arrow of time. As one goes "forward" in time, the second law of thermodynamics says, the entropy of an isolated system can increase, but not decrease. It is a term in thermodynamics that is most simply defined as the measure of disorder. The more disordered particles are, the higher their entropy. The universe is constantly becoming more chaotic over time. Mathematician James R. Newman called this “the general trend of the universe toward death and disorder,” while physicist Arthur Eddington coined the rather poetic term “the arrow of time.” Harland-Lang describes entropy as a “probability argument.” S =∫dQ/T As the consciousness develops forward, the more order/certain information will be, while the world goes the other way---more disorder (entropy gain) when developed. Then the being of this library will exist between both matter and antimatter world with features of stimuli such as complexity, uncertainty, disorder, ambiguity, and novelty.

Combination and Connection In this project, I analysed 254 facade combination (from graphic) in macro scale and take a crystal example to exam the understanding of ‘loose’ and ‘tight’ of the machine.

03 HOUSE RE-CODING POST-PANDEMIC CO-LIVING COMMUNITY IN BEIJING Studio Teamwork Instructor: Ping-Hsiang Chen Team Members: Xinghang Fu,Zhipeng Han

The concept of intelligent machine is not to aim to replace human force or intelligence but to unfold hidden complexities for human to make better decision and designs. In this project we take the opportunity to examine various architectural issues within the context of COVID 19 and attempt to develop a visionary architecture that is multifunctional, resource based and decentralized for the post COVID19 era. This project delves deeply into issues of function + graphic using Pix2Pix Generative Adversarial Network, aims at providing a post-pandemic co-living community using re-coding façade technology. Based on an existing stadium structure system, the design explorations centered on the rigorous manipulations of building facade through scale, orientation and distribution, bounded by rigid site perimeter. The tension between strict and vitality, in addition to material and geometric transformations, attempts to reflect and celebrate the ‘new normal’ for next few decades.

Cluster- Forming and Proportion Each cluster represent different lifestyles coming from the former solid and void study. We create 3D models by recognize the 2D image machine gave to us.

A: LIVING CLUSTER

B: LEISURE CLUSTER

C: PRODUCTION CLUSTER

Cluster Orientation and distribution based on a throughout site study about local urban context.

Production clusters distributed mostly on the urban side near the transportation context for efficiency.

Design circulation towards each cluster as well as the inner playground

Remained steel structure, steel truss component blocks

Living clusters appears equally among leisure and production clusters while inserted into old stadium structure.

Leisure clusters facing the lakeside mainly, more void and circulation space showed up based on the old stadium structure.

Central Sectional System Part of the slop space reserved for playfulness and vitality, giving adequate inside and outdoor open space for multiply residential activities. The boundary of inside and outside is altered by façade manipulation.

Multifunction & Co-living The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is based on the idea of optimizing, streamlining and expanding the reach of the most diverse activities. Work—live scheme is generated as shown subsequently.

Material Perception Multi-functional space distinguished by different material distribution.

04 BRIDGE HOUSE A PREFABRICATED HOUSE RECONSTURCTION PROJECT IN CHONGQING, CHINA Practical Work SUMMER 2020 Studio Qing

The Bridge House is an old prefabricated house built in the 1980s. It is located in the northeast corner of the Botanical Garden, on the mountainside and facing the entire Chongqing city. From the perspective of homestay management, this is a piece of "pure jade" with a great view, adjacent to the downtown area and relatively independent, but the large area has a low degree of development, and there is a certain risk of initial operation. The owner's appeal is simple and straightforward, and there are no rigid requirements on style and indicators, but he hopes that this area can be turned into the next "traffic mecca" in Chongqing, through the bottom-up media communication of customers for early drainage. Since then, at the beginning of the project, the words 'online traffic', 'internet influencer', 'photograph', etc. have become the prerequisites for the establishment of the project. How to balance the symbolic internet influencer elements with high market recognition and the relatively obscure and meaningful professional expression has become a major issue throughout the entire project.

EXSITING: Magic spatial temperament Due to this unconventional construction method with multiple time spans, the entire original building presents an almost magical spatial temperament: There are 3 different forms stairs on the ground floor; outdoor materials such as washed stone and ceramic tiles will suddenly appear on a certain wall indoors; many black spaces with no windows on all sides and they may come out next second with a bright and lush mountain view.

Chongqing Urban Context In a house of only 750 square meters, the level of spatial experience is full of tension, accompanied by all kinds of surprises and surprises, like a climax of spatial montage editing, and as intoxicating and lost as the urban temperament of Chongqing.

REDESIGN: Combing & Integration Based on such a rich and special original building site, the renovation design should focus on "combing" and "integration", with a lightweight placement posture, "strengthening" the unconventional experience sequence and spatial nodes in the original space , Act accordingly, and at the same time meet the owner’s needs for customers’ diversified check-in nodes.
