Our process
Background and research Patient falls are a common problem in hospitals globally. Falls can have serious physical, psychological and economic consequences for both patients and healthcare professionals. This issue has been recognised for many years and many strategies have been used to address it. However, fall rates remain high.

We try to give some confused patients familiar, every-day tasks to do.
The room felt sterile and impersonal - I could not bring many of my own belongings.
We show family photos to patients when they are distressed.
Couldn’t use the Internet and felt a bit disconnected from social media.
The hospital layout is quite confusing - it is hard to find your way around.
There was not enough space for my family and friends in the hospital room.
Sometimes larger private rooms can lead to more falls.
Sometimes it was really bright and noisy so it was hard to get enough sleep.

Change our focus Social and emotional comfort is our major goal. Rather than procedure, physical tools and space, we are ultimately aiming to change the social and emotional experience of a hospital room.
