I
’m Zhifei, a second year Architecture path 2 student. For me, design has 2 meanings, to amplify the beauty of the site and to try to find the problem and solve it in a creative way. Architect is not only a designer but able to take the responsibility of the society dealing with problems in all aspects: urban, social, natural, humanity and even futural. Architecture can help to improve people’s living condition, help reducing energy consumption, reserve historical treasures.......

t’s a riverside park acts as an urban connection by creating two terraces with light and water. The site I am interested in locates at the south of the city which is divided into 2 parts by the river: Mountain parts with railway tracks and high speed road as a primary entrance to the city; city part with two historical treasure la Cova and Col legiata. Only connection between two sides are an urban bridge and meandering Camino which is quite dangerous for pedestrians crossing the high speed road. Two terraces will be created: a wet naturalistic one dealing with flood on northern side and a dry culturalistic one dealing with the accessibility to the Cova. Two systems are combined by linear bridges which derived from bridge elements in site.

ocating in Atlantic city, known as the 'Las vegas' at east coast of USA, the site acts as a connection between the city gateway - rail way station and the attraction at coast - pier. We propose to break the 'wall' in the site made by huge casinos and garages and bring in the boardwalk which is the symbol and soul of Atlantic city. We verticalize the boardwalk turning it into ramps connecting different programs at two sides and create central void in the middle acting as a view corridor toward the sea. All kinds of activities can be seen from express way when visitors drive into the city.

Market extends over the whole site covering with triangulated roof. Different angle enable people to find a niche walking, sitting and lying.
Located at start of the site and combining with a market in the middle, the parking lot encourge people to walk towards the sea. Vehicles enters the site on the second floor while pedestrains are on first floor.
public space are interpolated among the market as playground for childern, outdoor theater .

e all design the same way. We begin with the large and go to the small. We begin with the ecosystem and work our way down to the detail. We decide on the form then we select the material. We solve all the big problems and them we figure our how to put in columns and beams and what to make them out of and how to join them together. Here I designed a building in the opposite direction. I began with the small and go to the large; began with a material and determine the form; began with a joint and grow a building out of that joint. To study a joint, to study the material through the joint, and to determinate the building out of both.

DEVELOPMENT Two tree-like systems - regular one and irregular - one were finally choosen to develop acting both as the structural elements and appearacnce attraction to make the building merge into the surrounding trees as the artificial fiorests. The branch of the "tree" column works as the bracket helping support loads and acts as a space frame.

he “tree” was designed to create massive communication space and maintain the site’s natural environment. Glass crystalline pipe signifies the tree trunk which provides natural lighting and ventilation to the bottom as well as vertical transportation space running through the architecture. Plentiful green roofs can achieve thermal insulation as well as create widespread gathering places. The emotional irregular form indeed can give expression to rational thinking, with closeknit functions and modes.

he existence of space is constant but its content can be variable, This is the basic principle of open building. I consider flexibility the core of open building, which is manifested by the ability to change according to different needs of customers, natural environment and in a larger sense, the social change, so the longevity of buildings can be extended. in my design, flexibility can be embodied in 5 levels which are “ selectable flat type”, “renewable room box units”, “adjustable balcony", “controlable communication space”, “changeable functions according to social changes”.

The new unit can be pushed into the preserved space as a drawer while the old one can be pulled out. The bottom of the side wall of the box has pulleys and the linked steel beam in the structure is made into “H” shape to form a groove. We can pull the pulleys of box units into the groove like pulling a drawer into rails and then fix it when they reach the predetermined position. All these structure characters make sure that the structure and function match each other well.

Take use of space between columns to be public equipment well, it could be pipe shaft or air shaft, which is beneficial for kitchen and toilet to ventilate fresh air. Partition wall in the pipe shaft can avoid two houses’air mixing or being polluted. Make use of space between beams to lay water supply and drainage pipe, and set access port on the floor to make operating repair convenient. he site is located at a contradictory point in a intermediate district between new and old buildinds. Inspiration comes from different methods dealing with simple paper ring. Two sides of the paper represent the old and the new building respectively. With the ordinary method, there will be no intersection between the two sides. However, if we reverse the paper strip and make it end to end like a Mobius Strip, the two sides will live as one.
