According to the Sūtra on the Life of the Prince in Accordance with Good Omens, Queen Māyā of Kapilavastu delivered to the world Prince Siddhartha on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month. The four heavenly kings rejoiced by bathing the baby prince with fragrant waters. Since that time, Chinese Buddhists have commemorated the birth of their religious founder with a Buddha bathing ritual on every eighth day of the fourth lunar month. We may ask whether the Buddha actually requires us to bathe him? In reality, we are only borrowing this external image to help us purify the Buddha within us. The purpose of bathing the Buddha image is to cleanse our minds. We should celebrate Buddha’s Birthday with morality, compassion, respect and other wholesome attitudes. With these attitudes, we can convey the meaning and significance behind organising Buddha’s Birthday festivals. These include:

Buddha’s Birthday festival is but a reminder for us to cultivate our minds. 2. Unity. Buddhism has become sectarian with Theravada, Mahāyana and Vajrayana traditions. Buddhists usually pay respect to the many Buddha and bodhisattva images of their choice on most days. However, on Buddha’s Birthday, all Buddhists will be united by commemorating their founder’s birth cohesively. 3. Celebration. Christians pay great attention to the birth of their sage: it is an important day of joy and celebration. On Christmas day, entire populations celebrate in lively carnivals. Hopefully, Buddhists in the future will also organise discussions and seminars, floral and artistic exhibitions, carnivals, fellowships and other meaningful activities to commemorate the auspicious birth of the Buddha. May the light of faith in the Buddha be handed down from generation to generation!

1. Purification. Humanity is not at its best in today’s society. When our bodies are dirty, we can cleanse it with water; when our clothes are filthy, we can launder them with water. However, a polluted mind can only be purified with the Buddha’s Dharma water. Hence, staging a

A PRAYER FOR THE BUDDHA’S BIRTHDAY

~by Venerable Master Hsing Yun Oh great, compassionate Buddha! We are here to celebrate with sincerity and respect Your birth into this world. When all the flowers bloomed during the warmth of spring, Exotic flowers were contending in beauty and fascination in the Lumbini garden; Everyone in Kapilavatthu was rejoicing, Gentle breezes spread the fragrance, All birds sang in unison; From that moment on, There was promise in the human world, From that moment on, There was Dharma in the human world. With one hand pointing to the sky And the other pointing to the earth, You declared that you were The uniquely honored one in the world. As you took seven steps, Clusters of lotus flowers appeared, And you used the pure and clean Dharma water To wash away the stains of the earth. Immediately, Muddy mountain streams became crystal clear, Burned-out torches were rekindled. The heavens played wonderful music, The earth displayed rare, auspicious signs; All these portents welcomed your arrival to this world. Oh great, compassionate Buddha! Because of your birth in this world, Your forty-nine years of teaching the Dharma Will hold sway for far more than three great kalpas. The more-than-three-hundred gatherings in which you taught the sutras will benefit more than countless sentient beings! Oh great, compassionate Buddha! It was you who broke the caste system, You who preached the doctrine of dependent origination and the equality of all beings, You who opened all beings’ minds to Buddha’s wisdom and views, you who awakened all sentient beings from ignorance.

6

Oh great, compassionate Buddha! In order to receive respectfully the joyous occasion of your birth to the world, In some places, people decorate with lanterns and colored hangings, Full of joyful atmosphere; In some places, people hold parades, And the sounds of gongs and drums shake the sky; Monasteries hold the ceremony of bathing The image of the Buddha, as Devotees and their families celebrate your birthday. This is how your followers commemorate Your gracious kindness! This is how your followers remember Your blessing and protection with gratitude! Oh great, compassionate Buddha! Please sympathize with the imperfections of our virtues and merits; we can only chant your great, sacred name mindfully, As though remembering our own kind mother. Oh great, compassionate Buddha! We kneel before you, We pass our hands over your golden body, We offer our sincere devotion, and We pray and hope that your virtue brightens the world. May the Dharma last forever. Please allow our vision to correspond with yours, And clearly see and understand the suffering of all beings; Please allow our speech to correspond to yours, And delight in saying wonderful and kind words; Please allow our actions to correspond to yours, By being willing to help our friends; Please allow our thoughts to correspond to yours, And concentrate on benefiting all beings. Oh great, compassionate Buddha! We offer our entire lives to expound and propagate the Truths; We offer our entire lives to liberate all sentient beings. Oh great, compassionate Buddha, Please accept our sincere prayer! Oh great, compassionate Buddha, Please accept our sincere prayer!

Message from The Hon Tony Abbott MP Former Prime Minister of Australia

Message from David Coleman MP Federal Member for Banks

I am pleased to provide this message for the Buddha Birthday Festival at Darling Harbour. Celebrating the birth, enlightenment and death of Sakyamuni Buddha, this Festival is an important time for the Buddhist community to come together in fellowship, and for the broader community to deepen their appreciation of Buddhist culture. The Buddhist community, in all its diversity, has become an integral part of the Australian story. Buddhism is Australia’s second-most practiced religion. For many, it provides meaning, purpose and inspiration to their daily lives. The five precepts of Buddhism: don’t kill, don’t steal, avoid dishonourable conduct, don’t lie, and don’t over-indulge, stand as a universal code of conduct that all people – regardless of our religion or culture – should strive towards. At this time, we celebrate the contribution that the Buddhist community makes to Australia. I acknowledge your commitment to respect, compassion and understanding as taught by Buddha. I send my best wishes to everyone attending this celebration.

The Hon Tony Abbott MP Prime Minister of Australia

Message from Dr. Geoff Lee MP Member for Parramatta Parliamentary Secretary for Multiculturalism

Message from Cr Gordon Bradbery OAM Lord Mayor of Wollongong

It is with great honor I have been provided the opportunity to contribute to the 25th Buddha’s Birthday Festival Commemorative Book. As Lord Mayor of the City of Wollongong one of the greatest legacies I can leave behind is having served my community with compassion and contributed to increasing the levels of social capital, trust, connections and tolerance in our community. I am proud to have the Nan Tien Temple as part of our community. The Temple provides a backdrop of solace, education and harmony for not just our community, but for many overseas visitors as well; a focus of exchange between eastern and western culture and ideas; the interchange of the traditional and the modern; and an adaptation of our local communities to be truly multicultural and inclusive. I extend the Nan Tien Temple and the Buddha’s Light International Association (Sydney chapter) my thanks and blessing on the celebration of Buddha’s Birthday and the 25th anniversary of festivities and wish you every success and opportunity to...... “Teach this triple truth to all: A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion are the things which renew humanity.”

Yours sincerely,

Cr Gordon Bradbery OAM Lord Mayor Wollongong City Council

MESSAGES 贺词

Message from Cr Mayor Gail Giles-Gidney Lord Mayor of Willoughby

Message from Rev. Miguel Angel Ayuso Guixot, MCCJ Bishop of Wollongong

Dear Buddhist Friends 1. On behalf of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, I would like to extend my heartfelt greetings and good wishes to all of you, as you celebrate the feast of Vesakh which offers us Christians an occasion to renew our friendly dialogue and close collaboration with the different traditions that you represent. 2. Pope Francis, at the very beginning of his ministry, has reaffirmed the necessity of dialogue of friendship among followers of different religions. He noted that “The Church is […] conscious of the responsibility which all of us have for our world, for the whole of creation, which we must love and protect. There is much that we can do to benefit the poor, the needy and those who suffer, and to favour justice, promote reconciliation and build peace” (Audience with Representatives of the Churches and Ecclesial Communities and of the Different Religions, 20 March 2013). The Message of the World Day of Peace in 2013 entitled “Blessed are the Peacemakers,” notes that “The path to the attainment of the common good and to peace is above all that of respect for human life in all its many aspects, beginning with its conception, through its development and up to its natural end. True peacemakers, then, are those who love, defend and promote human life in all its dimensions, personal, communitarian and transcendent. Life in its fullness is the height of peace. Anyone who loves peace cannot tolerate attacks and crimes against life” (Message for the World Day of Peace in 2013, n. 4). 3. I wish to voice that the Catholic Church has sincere respect for your noble religious tradition. Frequently we note a consonance with values expressed also in your religious books: respect for life, contemplation, silence, simplicity (cf. Verbum Domini, no. 119). Our genuine fraternal dialogue needs to foster what we Buddhists and Christians have in common especially a shared profound reverence for life. 4. Dear Buddhists friends, your first precept teaches you to abstain from destroying the life of any sentient being and it thus prohibits killing oneself and others. The cornerstone of your ethics lies in loving kindness to all beings. We Christians believe that the core of Jesus’ moral teaching is twofold; love of God and love of neighbour. Jesus says: “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love.” And again: “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you” (Catechism of the Catholic Church n. 1823). The fifth Christian Commandment, “You shall not kill” harmonizes so well with your first precept. Nostra Aetate teaches that “the Catholic Church rejects nothing of what is true and holy in these religions” (NA 2). I think, therefore, that it is urgent for both Buddhist and Christians on the basis of the genuine patrimony of our religious traditions to create a climate of peace to love, defend and promote human life. 5. As we all know, in spite of these noble teachings on the sanctity of human life, evil in different forms contributes to the dehumanization of the person by mitigating the sense of humanity in individual and communities. This tragic situation calls upon us, Buddhists and Christians, to join hands to unmask the threats to human life and to awaken the ethical consciousness of our respective followers to generate a spiritual and moral rebirth of individuals and societies in order to be true peacemakers who love, defend and promote human life in all its dimensions. 6. Dear Buddhist friends, let us continue to collaborate with a renewed compassion and fraternity to alleviate the suffering of the human family by fostering the sacredness of human life. It is in this spirit that I wish you once again a peaceful and joyful feast of Vesakh.

MESSAGES 贺词

Message from Chief Abbess Venerable Man Ko Fo Guang Shan, Australia and New Zealand

Auspicious greetings to all Dharma protectors and friends!

About 2,560 years ago, the founder of Buddhism, Sakyamuni, was born in Lumbini Park to deliver joy to the world through the exposition of the truth. From then, the world was enlightened with the Buddhist Dharma, and this auspicious day was known as the Buddha’s Birthday.

The Buddha’s Birthday and Multicultural Festival entered its 25th year in Australia this year. This historical milestone is made possible by the support of various state governments, city councils, local authorities, community associations, religious groups, leaders, businesses, sponsors, volunteers and the community at large. We thank you for your unwavering support because today’s magnificence is largely due to your generous contributions. Australia is a multicultural society and a nation that respects religious freedom. This large island allows different ethnic, cultural and religious groups to thrive amidst mutual respect and harmony. The Buddha’s Birthday and Multicultural Festival exhibits one of Fo Guang Shan’s missions to “promote the Buddha Dharma through culture.” At multicultural and interfaith exchanges in Darling Harbour (NSW), South Bank (QLD), Federation Square (VIC) and Langley Park (WA), and Wollongong city (NSW), we have promoted the values of mutual respect and inclusivity. Over 500,000 people have participated in our events each year. Nan Tien Temple, Buddha’s Light International Association - Sydney and Nan Tien Institute co-organise this annual Festival. Activities range from Buddha-bathing to purify body and mind, vegetarianism to protect the environment, multicultural art and performances, and interfaith prayers for world peace etc. Through a variety of activities and the Buddha’s compassion and wisdom, we hope that everyone will practise the Three Acts of Goodness to do good deeds, speak good words and think good thoughts. We wish for everyone to experience inner peace, mutual respect, family cohesiveness, social harmony and world peace.

Message from Francis Wong President, Buddha’s Light International Association - Sydney

In 1991, Buddha’s Light international Association (BLIA) - Sydney was officially inaugurated at International Buddhist Association Australia (IBAA) - Parramatta. Within the same year, we celebrated our first Buddha’s Birthday. In 1996, the organisers Nan Tien Temple and BLIA Sydney celebrated Buddha’s Birthday at Darling Harbour, a famous tourist place situated in the heart of the city. Nan Tien Temple also organised a Bathing of the Buddha Dharma Service in Crown Street Mall of Wollongong. In addition, IBAA Chatswood celebrated the Buddha’s Birthday at Chatswood Mall Plaza. 2015 Buddha’s Birthday Celebration has reached its 24th anniversary milestone. Thanks to the support and recognition from the general public and the community. Buddha’s Birthday promotes social harmony and cultural exchange between the East and the West. It fosters education and charity. In particular, it promotes the “Three Acts of Goodness” – Do Good Deeds, Say Good Words and Think Good Thoughts. Furthermore, to support Fo Guang Shan’s objective “to nurture talents through education”, the organisers scheduled a 2-day alms round to raise funds for the Nan Tien Institute Education Fund that goes into building the Nan Tien Institute, which officially opened in March 2015. In his congratulatory message to the 2015 Buddha’s Birthday Festival, the 28th Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon. Tony Abbott MP stressed that “The Buddhist community, in all its diversity, has become an integral part of the Australian story. Buddhism is Australia’s second-most practiced religion. For many, it provides meaning, purpose and inspiration to their daily lives.” Venerable Master Hsing Yun also emphasised the importance of education to nurture talented people. Education is the foundation to build a healthy society. The future of Buddha’s Birthday Festival will strengthen the promotion of the “Three Acts of Goodness”, “Four Givings” – Give others confidence, Give others joy, Give others hope, Give others convenience and the promotion of “The Five Harmonies” - Self harmony achieved through equanimity, Family harmony achieved through deference, Interpersonal harmony achieved through respect, Social harmony achieved through cooperation and World harmony achieved through peace, to build a pure land. We would like to offer our sincere thanks to the benefactors, companies, government, representatives from various faiths, the local media, members of BLIA and volunteers for your continuous sponsorships and support. With your support, the Buddha’s Birthday Celebration has become one of the most memorable and important annual events in Darling Harbour.

DHARMA EVENTS AND CELEBRATIONS 庆典 Festival Venues 菩提道场

In 1991, the Parramatta Vihara held its first Buddha’s Birthday Festival inside the vihara. In 1992 and 1993, the increased popularity of the festival saw a huge turnout of crowds, raising safety concerns over the serving of hot food. Therefore, it was decided that the Bathing of the Buddha would take place inside the vihara whilst food stalls were moved to Jubilee Park, across from the vihara. The park provided a nice location for families to picnic and enjoy the celebration. In 1994, the then Deputy Lord Mayor of Sydney, Mr. Henry Tsang suggested Darling Harbour as the new host for this important event. In 1995, the celebration expanded from the Chinese Garden Plaza where both the Buddha stage and the food stalls were held to Tumbalong Park. Together with that, the focus of the event also broadened from a festive celebration to also cover education, culture, arts and spiritual cultivation. To allow the public to understand Buddha’s teachings through Buddha’s Birthday Festival, the organisers promoted the Mahayana Buddhist culture of vegetarianism as a means to eat our way to compassion and kindness. Vegetarianism is also an ethical choice grounded on the understanding for environmental protection and ecological balance.

Since 1994, the Buddha’s Birthday Festival has been held continuously at Darling Harbour, Sydney, and has become an important multicultural event on the city’s annual calendar.

There are also outdoor activities for all to promote family and social togetherness. These activities serve as reminders of the intent of the Buddha who was born for the welfare of the world.

BATHING OF THE BUDDHA

SIGNIFICANCE OF “BATHING OF THE BUDDHA” While bathing the statue of Prince Siddhartha with a scoop of holy water, Buddhists pray to rid themselves of the spiritual defilements of greed, hatred and ignorance; so that body, speech and mind may remain pure. The ‘Bathing of the Buddha’ also reminds us to sincerely and diligently cleanse ourselves of attachment, aversion and delusion. Buddhists strive to practise mindfulness, respect, and care for society and the environment, by purifying actions, speech and intentions; while guiding stray and evil minds onto the path of virtue. The practice of bathing the Buddha involves kneeling in front of the baby Buddha. Then filling the small ladle with water and pouring it three times over the shoulder of the Buddha.

BATHING OF THE BUDDHA

One’s state of mind while bathing the Buddha is all important. We should aim for a: Mind of Confidence - visualise our own mind being cleansed at the same time. Mind of Sincerity - bathe the image of the Buddha as if the Buddha himself were present; while dedicating the merits to the enlightenment of all sentient beings. Mind of Virtue - wish for the elimination of obstacles, and seek purity of intention. With the merits gained from bathing the Buddha, may we wish for a peaceful and harmonious society. This is the real significance of bathing the Buddha.

The Significance of Offering

“Offering” originally refers to the offering of material goods such as food and clothing to the triple Gem – Buddha, Dharma and Sangha and to our teachers, parents and the deceased.

To our teachers and elders, offerings convey our feelings of affection, duty and respect. While to our students and dependents, offerings encompass the meaning of “empathy”, “care” and “protection”. This is what is referred to in the Buddhist scriptures as “to repay indebtedness to our benefactors, and to provide relief to the suffering”. Regardless of whether we are offering to our superiors or taking care of those below us, we should aspire to the Bodhicitta, or the heart of infinite altruism. Our motivation behind the offering should not be for the benefit of ourselves, but for all the countless sentient beings in the entire space and across all dharma realms.

The Buddha refers to the merit from making offering as “big expanse of the sky”. When one offers with a mind of non-discrimination and equanimity, then the fruit of the offering will also be vast like the limitless sky.

Inter-faith Prayer

Prayer for Light Offering ~by Venerable Master Hsing Yun

Oh Great Compassionate Buddha! Please accept the offering of the lamp of our minds; In ancient times, humankind moved forward. From a primitive state through the discovery of fire; Thereafter, a thousand-year-old dark room could be instantly brightened. By lighting of a lamp; Ships navigating in the night could identify directions. By signals from a lighthouse; Pedestrians in dark alleys could walk without fear. By the illumination of street lights. Light is indeed very important! Oh Great Compassionate Buddha! The light I am offering you now, Is formless and shapeless, It is out of my faith and Bodhichitta I only wish that all sentient beings have a bright future. I only wish that all sentient beings will achieve Buddhahood together

Draw Lots is a traditional Chinese birth celebration. It is held on a baby’s first birthday to predict the baby’s future, career and interests. It is also a way to express good wishes for a baby’s prosperity. During Buddha’s Birthday Celebration, many parents will bring their newborn to the temple to be blessed by the Venerables. The Buddha’s Light International Association organises a Draw Lots ceremony for the children, to wish every newborn good health and peace.

Alms Round

A tradition originating in the Buddha’s time, the Alms Round involved monks walking barefooted through a village from house to house. Without favour or request, all offerings which were freely donated and placed into the alms bowl would be gratefully accepted by the Sangha. This ancient tradition is continued in the modern context with Alms Round becoming an opportunity for the public to support the work of Humanistic Buddhism. The ritual serves to build bonds between giver, receiver and the wider community. To reinforce this point, at the completion of the round, the Abbess and Venerables transfer merits to all sentient beings.

An important historical moment for Humanistic Buddhism - the Sealing of Time Capsule at the Nan Tien Institute on 28 September 2014. 2014

History of Fo Guang Shan Nan Tien Institute

Since the opening of Fo Guang Shan Nan Tien Temple in Australia in 1995, it has actively propagated Buddhism, facilitated cultural exchanges between the East and the West, and invigorated the local economy and tourism. In recognition of Nan Tien Temple’s contributions to culture, education and charity, Wollongong City Council donated 29 acres of land to Nan Tien Temple for the establishment of Nan Tien Education and Cultural Centre (Institute and the Art Gallery). An official signing ceremony was held on 31st May 2001, witnessed by Wollongong City Council Mayor George Harrison, Chief Executive Officer of Wollongong City Council Rod Oxley, then Venerable Abbess Man Chien of Nan Tien Temple, Venerable Man Shin, and legal consultant Michael Dyson. Land ownership was transferred from the council to the temple with a symbolic fee of one Australian dollar. After six years of planning, the foundationlaying ceremony was held on 6th October 2007. The ceremony was hosted by the founder of Fo Guang Shan and Nan Tien Institute, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, who was joined by David Farmer, representative of the Wollongong Mayor, and Lin Songhuann, Representative of the Australian Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre, along with over one thousand participants.

During the ceremony, Venerable Master Hsing Yun recited the following verse: This higher education institute is named Nan Tien, Where youths will learn from eminent and virtuous ones. On this day of Chinese-Australian cultural exchange, Multicultural harmony bears witness to peace.

Buddha’s Birthday and Multicultural Festival is also a celebration of multiculturalism. The nondiscriminating and non-exclusive nature of the Buddha’s teachings is realised in the policy of multiculturalism. Around 1,600 years ago, under the support of the Chinese emperor, the entire city of Luoyang celebrated the Buddha’s Birthday with a grand parade and celebration. Exotic Kuchean music and dance that blended Indian, Middle and Far Eastern flavours were brought into China via the Silk Road. Today’s multicultural performances recall the history of these Buddha’s Birthday celebrations.

Prince Siddhartha’s Costume Competition

One of the new additions to the Buddha’s Birthday Multicultural Festival is the “Prince Siddhartha’s costume competition”. Children from 4 to 10 years old dressed in colourful costumes and headdresses walk to the centre stage. With one hand pointing to the heavens, one to the ground, they make the same proclamation as Prince Siddhartha did 2,600 years ago: “Of heaven and earth, I am the unique one”.

The event is not so much a competition as an activity that allows parents and children to learn about the story of the Buddha and connect with the great teacher. The children also gain confidence from understanding that each one of them is a unique being on this earth that can make a difference to the world, just like Prince Siddhartha did.

Directly after Prince Siddhartha’s birth, he took seven steps and seven lotus flowers sprang from beneath his feet. Then, the young Prince pointed one hand towards the heavens and one towards the earth and said, “Heaven above and earth beneath, I am the Honoured One, the One who liberates all who suffer in the Three Realms.” The prince’s image has evolved over the years, reflecting the organisers’ wish to give visitors a sense of anticipation for the year’s baby prince and to connect with their own potential to be a future Buddha.

The Prince Siddhartha images and statues have become one of the Festival’s main attractions.

“Everyone is a Buddha!” said Venerable Master Hsing Yun. Putting aside the question of “who is actually a Buddha?”, it can at least be said that Venerable Master Hsing Yun is a bodhisattva who never tires. Turning 90 years old this year, he has faced over 40 years of diabetes that led to a serious eye condition, along with retinal detachment. With unclear vision in both eyes, he can barely see. Despite writing calligraphy with shaking hands, he still is able to let his mind guide his hands in completing the extremely rare “one-stroke calligraphy.”

“One-stroke Calligraphy” means that every piece of calligraphy written by Venerable Master is done in one stroke. No discontinuation is allowed from beginning to end, as discontinuation will make it difficult to continue to the next character because his vision does not allow him to distinguish the distance between each character.

130

Buddhacarita

A king, by the name of Śuddhodana, King of the Śākya clan, he was anointed to stand at the head of earth’s monarchs. To him there was a queen, named Māyā, as if free from all deceit.

One night, Queen Māyā dreamed of a huge elephant, white like Himālaya. He was armed with six tusks and he entered the womb of Māyā, to destroy the evils of the world.

Then one day with the king’s permission the queen, having a great longing in her mind, went with a group of royal maidens into the garden at Lumbinī Park.

As she supported herself against the branch of a large tree, which was laden with beautiful flowers, the Bodhisattva suddenly came forth.

With glory and beauty he shone like the young sun. Calmly, far-striding, — seven such firm footsteps did he then take, — he who was like the constellations of the heavens.

The great seer Asita in his thirst for the ultimate wisdom came to the palace of the Śākya king.

Asita made these predictions, “Having forsaken his kingdom, and attained the highest truth by strenuous efforts, he will proclaim the way of deliverance, as to travellers who have lost their way.”

The Buddha was a human being who became the “Awakened One” by taking on the greatest conquests of all – the overcoming of selfattachments. He taught in the Dhammapada, “A man may conquer ten thousand men in battle, but he who conquers himself is the greatest of conquerors.”

The Buddha’s Birthday Education Project (BBEP) aims to inspire and educate people about the historic birth of the Śākyamuni Buddha and, in doing so, integrate Buddhist wisdom within a modern context.

BBEP connects people whose lives have been touched by the Buddha and his teachings. It provides avenues for those who aspire to walk the Path, and wish to find expressions for that aspiration. Through artworks, technology, animation, photography, videos, handicrafts and poetry, the teachings of the Buddha are understood and the Buddha within is awakened. This is the “magic” of the birth story of the Buddha; this is the “magic” of BBEP

Buddha’s Birthday Education in Schools

Bring Buddhism back into the human world. For 45 years after his enlightenment, the Buddha walked barefooted along the shores of the Ganges, his footsteps covering all over northern India. He taught people the way of liberation, guiding them through the darkness like a Path of Light. The Buddha is the greatest educator of all. His ten-toe footprints remind us that as long as we follow the Path, we too can become the “awakened one”.

FUTURE AND HOPE

Organised by Nan Tien Temple, Nan Tien Institute and Buddha’s Light International Association Sydney, the “2016 Buddha’s Birthday Celebration & Multicultural Festival” has reached its 25th anniversary milestone. Indeed, Buddha’s Birthday Festival has contributed significantly in promoting Buddhism in Australia. According to the 2011 Census produced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the most common non-Christian religion in 2011 was Buddhism which accounted for 2.5% of the entire population. In his congratulatory message to the 2015 Buddha’s Birthday Festival, the 28th Prime Minister of Australia the Hon. Tony Abbott MP highlighted that “The Buddhist community, in all its diversity, has become an integral part of the Australian story. Buddhism is Australia’s secondmost practised religion. For many, it provides meaning, purpose and inspiration to their daily lives.” Buddhism has grown rapidly in Australia due to its teachings of compassion, respect and equanimity. Furthermore, practising Buddhism brings joy, faith and hope to our daily lives. These distinguishing characteristics of Buddhism are demonstrated by the official Buddha’s Birthday Ceremony and Multicultural Performances where tradition is integrated into modernity, religious culture into arts. Buddha’s Birthday Festival caters for all ages and will showcase the vibrant cultural diversity of Australia. The founder of Fo Guang Shan, Venerable Master Hsing Yun indicated that Buddhism needs youth, and youth needs faith. Youth brings life to a

186

country. Youth through education will learn to become useful citizens. The message of Future and Hope of Buddha’s Birthday Festival is to empower and encourage youth to integrate the practice of Humanistic Buddhism into their lives and to actively promote and localise Humanistic Buddhism in Australia as it is the fundamental teachings of the Buddha. Humanistic Buddhism purifies our minds and hearts and brings happiness, joy, peace and harmony to the world. In addition, the message of Future and Hope of Buddha’s Birthday Festival aims to deliver a message of kind deeds, generosity, peace and harmony as a foundation to build a united and harmonious community. To achieve this goal, it is essential to focus on the Buddha’s practice and promote the “Three Acts of Goodness” campaign – Say Good Words, Do Good Deeds, Think Good Thoughts – and putting these into action using the “Four Givings” – Give others confidence, Give others joy, Give others hope, Give others convenience. The promotion of the “Five Harmonies” begins with ourselves - self harmony achieved through equanimity; family harmony achieved through deference; interpersonal harmony achieved through respect; social harmony achieved through cooperation, and world harmony achieved through peace.

It is hoped that through encouraging the youth to inherit and integrate Humanistic Buddhism as their religion, and practising the Buddha’s ways, ultimately a Pure Land on earth is possible.
