Project No.1 What's Your Sign? Phrase 1: Concept Generation
--Step 1: What are the words that best describe yourself? Pick three from the list and prioritize them. I've picked three words that matches my personalities: Adventurous, nursing and optimistic. After chose what I was planning to focus, I began searching images that expresses the same meaning of my words. At the beginning, I turned the word "adventurous" into the picture related to some sports, then I got the image of a telescope. For nursing, I was lucky enough to find the exact matchable picture: An held up cat. The last word I picked is optimistic, I found so many sutffs and finally decided to draw a smiling face to replace other things.
--Step 2: Making collages At the beginning making of collages, I was wondering about the way to put them together, because I thought collage is the thing of simple combination of pictures. These two blow are my first two collages that contains the meaning of my words in simple order.
After the meeting in the class, I got a new definition of collages, and decided to make a brand new one. So I thought I could put my pictures of optimitic and nursing in to the frames of the telescope while there are two words beside adventurous. Finally I got the collage like this.
Phrase 2: Build It.
After making decision about what my college looks like, I started working on building it. I chose the carton as the material of my sign for its easy accessibility. Fianlly, it looks like get worn out but still represents the meaning of nursing, optimitic and adventurous. And I had difficulty in finding the right way to hang it up, I couldn't find the string so I used paper instead at the beginning.
After got the feedback from my classmates and Jerry, I've realized that the telescope shape is hard enough to be recognized, not to mention to find the meaning behind it. In this case, I planned to seek another picture that matches the word adventurous better, and I saw the rider. And this time, I changed the style of the hanging in order to make more space available for my sign.
Project No.3A: Perceiving, Experiencing, and Interpreting Spaces and Places
Project No.3A: Documenting Our Journals This assignment requires us to go to those places which can evoke our wonders and engagement in designing. I chose the Pier 39 and spent a whole afternoon there. Vitrually, I've stayed in San Francisco for nearly one year and I've gone some beaches and sea shores as well, but I've never explored a pier that carefully and enjoyably. Pier 39 is such a place that full filled with joy and peace that attract all of the people in this city.
This is the sutff like This photo was the folding screen taken in the made in wood, it shopping place. provides provides the Looking out when I space to have a rest stood under the roof and thinking. of the place, I got the feeling of being released. Looking foward from here, it's an unforgetable view and it evokes wonders.
• There were sea lions lying around, giving vistors a sense of laziness.
As what has been shown here is a mural painting, actually you can see this kind of drawing everywhere in pier 39, most which are about whales. These are all vistors And this might be in the food store in the iconic sculpture pier 39, people here of pier 39, it's and the views here shaped in a sea become integrated lion, the lovely animals in this pier. scences in this place. This is the picture of the right front entry of pier 39, the funny crab is clamping the sign, showing the amusement inside of the pier 39.
What has been shown above is the photo which is taken on the overline bridge outside the pier. The overview of the square indicates the joy of peace which isn't shown directly from the picture.
Walking out from the pier 39, the sun was still shinning, it's a big sunny day, and the pier is still the way it use to be.
Project No.3B : Making Collages
After organize those pictures I've taken in the Pier 39, I printed them out and find the way to combine their pieces into a complete collage that evokes wonder and bring the feeling of optimitic, adventurous as well. First, I analysed the possibilitis of putting those related fragments together, then I found the way. I draw the boundary on the picture, later on I cut them out, left some spaces between each one, then I got the image like this : The whale swimming above the pier 39, and the sunshine shines on the heart, representing a warm scence here.
Charcoal Drawing -- Exploring Possibilites
Charcoal is a kind of new drawing material that I've never used before. It gives a feeling that is's hard to control, hence, Jerry let us take fresh papers to do partice. We started with drawing lines that evokes wonders, then we transit to analyse the transition from dark to light, mutiple light sourcecs and places draw forth your wonder.
Project No.4 : Make a wall, Make a window, Evoke Wonder Possible Positon: The wall I was going to build represents a connection of inside and outside by creating a space that provides the condition for visitors to ruminate. Precedence Research: The place which is shown here is the Church of Light, which has been done by Tadao Ando. By giving the cross carve, the church can express a feeling of mystery and divine which impresses people a lot.
And what has been shown here is the famous building whcih is called Corbusier's Notre, there are ao many irregular rectangle holes or windows on its side walls. The light comes out from them at night, makes the building more incredible.
There are gesture drawing that evokes our wonders. We were asked to draw pictures that can draw foth your inside thinking with charcoal. What I have planned is leave a hole on the page with light comes down from the top. In my mind, if there were somethings hidden behind but you could realize it, it could be the most evocative thing for me.
Building the Model • a. What are the most significant aspects and qualities of your constructd design? • This is what my first wall looks like. Looking it in gerneral, the feature of the design is the carve in moon and sun shape, and the how the edge curves. • b. What will a first time viewer of you work see and experience? • Looking from the front, what people can see is a little human figure standing in the hole on the wall, expecting something. Viewing the design in different directions, the pattern of sun and moon interact each face and give the connection of insdide and outside. When the sunshine shines onto the wall, the edge will give a diverse kind of shade in different direction.
c. What does your design primarily represent? The model of the all is gdoing to tell people a place has its own personality and different possibility looked in differnt aspects. Besides, it makes people comprehend and wonder deeply.
d. What are the details of what you audience will see and experience as they engage your work and how these details relate to your metaphors? The design of this wall is featured in its layers and its carves. Looking in gerneral, its series of carves lead watchers eye from the wall to the window, let them know what to focus on, and since the window is wide opening, people can also look into it and see how this stuff shapes.
What has been shown now is my second design of the wall. I chose the advantage from the previous one and concentrate on improving it on the carves. Put them under the light or sunshine, it's obivous that the pattern will show up on the wall and the floor, actually it's beautiful. But the thing is I didn't create enough space to recieve the casting shadows, that's a dispointing part.
This is the analysis and suggestion given by my classmate, he has analysed the pattern of the wall, pointed out it's gernerally a sun shape. He also let me know there are other possibilities and I tried them out on the paper, got the new model eventually.
Narrative:
As people walked into the path that leads the way to the room, they will find that there are plenty of transverses that connect the wall and the ceiling. Which blocks their views of what's right in front of them, so that makes them wonderabout what kind of view they will see. Also, the declining height of the ceiling and curving path will give them a curious sense of exciting. At the end of the pathway, there will be some light coming into the path. Coming out from the approach, people will experience a visual feast which means the whole room with high ceiling are filled with scatterd light. Arounded platform will be placed at the center of this space and for the
platform, there will be a glass-made irregular surface stick standing on it. Looking around the room, vistiors can realize that all the windows on the all, no matter high or low, narrow or wide, they are all opening to the stick at the center of the platform. When the light resources coming into the room, the whole space will be full filled of the reflection of the light, which gives them a dreamy feeling. Other things like benches attached to the platforms are provided to let them relax. After visit the room, they can walk out through the totally opposite tunnel to leave. The point of the whole place is to give visitors a sense of wonder, evoke their imagination.
After getting my feedback from my classmates and my instuctor, I've realized that I got my design off the topic, beacuse I didn't show any scence matches my postion. Realizing the problem, I put my hand on improving the design. What I did is to make the bent cover of the tunnel and for the room as well. And what I've added is the huge cover inside the fence, and created a stair leading the way from the inside of the room to outside as well.
After the class meething, I've got my feedback for the last design again. First valueable suggestion is that the end of my design is like a unfinished story, because if I leave those vistors on the cover of the room, it must be defective. Based on the previous model, combining with my professor's suggestion, I produced the relatively perfect model, what has been shown on the left side. You can see there are some new elements on this new version model. First, the windows which allows visitors to look back is going to make desire the front view of the tunnel. The huge tower leads visitors to the high place, giving their a overview of what the way looks like.
