ST.LOUIS BOSNIAN COMMUNITY ARCHIVE Degree Project

Location: St.louis, U.S Instructor: Ahren Chandler Site Area: 46,000 Sf Building Area: 65, 000 Sf 2017Degree project, Graduate, Solo work Bosnian came to U.S as war refugee during 90th and brew a flourish community in the St.louis metropolitan, more than 70,000 which is the largest group outside the Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially the Bevo Mill neighbourhood. The Bosnian community has built a replica of Sebilj --”symbol of Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia” to mark the center of their community. The project Use the replica as an reference point “cut” a piece of Sarajevo implant into the Bevo, reconstruct it in same logic but different language, Maintain to keep the perception of the human scale from Sarajevo. Fix the local off-scale street scale to pedestrian friendly. Acting as a park, a living room and a place to retrospect.

The project site is located in Bevo Mill neighborhood which in the south st.louis city. The neighborhood is previous Dutch town. A remarkable historical wind mill (built in 1904) is located in the center of the neighborhood, right in front of the project site. Two main street, Gravois ave and In 2014, in honor to the st.louis for its welcome to the Bosnian community, the Bosnia government donate one 1:1 replica of Sebilj --- An Ottoman style fountain, which is the symbol of Sarajevo and built it in the center of the Bevo Mill, in front of the wind mill. And that is the project starting point. The community has come here during the last two decades. Multiple local institutions have document their memory of this immigrant process, leave a huge amount of the document in different media. The project is intent to build an Achive to store all the document about Bosnian community in st.louis or even country-wide.

Main Axis Rendering By shrinking the scale to human –friendly scale, and provide multiple circulation line around the area, the project become a center gathering space for community activity. Meanwhile, the building providing 24 hour retail service which making it tightly relative with the people’s life even after the office hour. The upper part of the building is series of platform abstractive “mountain”, echo with the mountainous topo of Bosnia, an Bosnian golden lily field is on the top of the “mountain”, which is also design as the sun shading system. Under the mountain is the community center and archive. Each “Sarajevo footprint based house” has its own feature.

The ground plan foodprint is basically echo of the footprint in the Sarajevo. The streets is almost remain as the original but change the direction base on the local urban texture. But the scale has been keeped. Those “Alley“ act as entrance for the building. the Center Axis is also keep as the main circulation space

Serial terrances located in the centural axis, connect the community rooms which are adjacent to them. Those community rooms has a highly accessibility.

Center garthering plaza is act as main entrance’ and the local pedestrain street’s extension. this vacacy provide a directly view connect between Sebilj and the interior space of building.


The Structure above auditurim is special designed to adjust the luminance and provide Bosnian golden lily garden within it. it also provide this garden view to the archive by adjusted the angle of the sturecture

An Gallery is located in the end of the visual axis, which start from Bevo Mill. the scale and perception of Sarajevo is friendly convy to st.louis by this project.

ST.LOUIS CITY SCOPE LIBRARY Community library design Location: St.louis instructor: Freixas Catalina Site Area: 13,750 Sf Building Area: 35,000 Sf 2014Fall, Graduate, Solo work The library is located in the lower income, mix-cultural,high-crime area in St.louis. The main goal of this project is built one space that involve the landmark of city inside the building. Every tube is facing to a landmark, and the service area is in the volume between the tubes. The street is also invite inside the building, the ground level is highly connected to the city street and the plaza, in front of the church, to form a circumstance of public.

The project is adjacent to Highway 44 Combining with the church on the west of the site, the project form a plaza between two building and form a pedestrain friendly leisure area.




The project act as an community center to the adjacent area. the building is a claster of serveral huge multiple scope face to different landmark and resort of St.louis. By overlay, merge and suspend between different tubes, a vivid civic public open space formed both interior and exterior.

30 units Apartment Design Location: Nesiko, Japan Instructor: Valerie Greer 2015SP project, Graduate, Solo work Site Area: 10,800 Sf Building Area: 42,000 Sf Niseko located in Hokkaido, japan, is well-known for its high quality skiing resort, which attracts millions of foreigners come and enjoy a holiday. The project focused on providing the space for people both engaged and watch by Invite the street inside the community and create serial courtyard to blur the boundary between town and community and also the relationship between units. Divide the space inside the community in three level: public, semi-public, privacy. As for the units itself, the plan is arrange elaborately to form an intimate relationship between neighbors while their privacy is well protected simultaneously by the layered boundary space form by vertical variation and transparency of the aperture. There are 14 main types units among the 30 units. Such diversity promote some interacts, like visiting, among the residents

potentially since almost every units have its unique relationship with city, mountain and the courtyard.


The site is located in a valley in Nesiko, Hokkaido, Japan. Mountain Yotei is located in the south - east. SKIING RESORT

The front Yard is highly relate to the context of the site. it totally open to the pedestrain street. let the city context flow into the project site. The dry garden start from the street, let the building also become an urban leisure area, invite people use this space and let the “introvert type“ house connect to the outside world.

DUPLEX HOUSE FOR DIVROCED FAMILY Duplex house design Location: St.louis Instructor: Freixas Catalina Site Area: 1750 Sf Building Area: 2500 Sf 2014Fall, Graduate, Solo work Although the marriage is broken, the couple decide to find an alternative way to live as a family to continue enjoying their children, while being separated in seek of preserving the daily life with their three adorable kids , whose 5, 7, 11 years old. Although the kid is the bend to tie this “two� units together, the divorced two need the personal privacy more than anytime. In order to reach those goals, I divide the space in three level: personal, half-shared and shared. The main space for the kids is shared, both of the parent can see them playing simultaneously. And for the half-share space, one of parents can only peep to the kids when is not his or her time. The main points of these space is the kids can see the parents simultaneously, just like what it was.

Aerial view Children live in divorced family is unfortunate. Such grow circumstance some time would cast a permanent shadow inside their heart. This project want to invertigate and try to find a way to design an ecomonic and healthy solution for the kids in divorce family

A family is separated by the parent ‘s divorced.

The parent is divorced, but the kids still deserve a complete life.

By playing with height and encloseure. Both parent can connect with kids, while don’t need to meet eachother.

By designing the space and time. a divorced family can still functional complete from kids scope.

By designing the louver system, Space in this duplex house can be divide in three part: Dad and Mom’s individual praviate space,which utterly visual blocked with each. And kids space which is visual connect with both side.

CITY RE-SETTLEMENT PLAN: DALLAS

Urban design proposal to revive the pedestrain circumstance Location: Dallas Instructor: Jennifer Yoos Site Area: 330 Hec 2016Fall, Graduate, Solo work Dallas is a city which is famous for its vehicle life. The city is planed by Vincent Ponte, a Canadian Urban Planer in 1980, which was aim to promote the city life and viality. The planning is driven by the city government and a lot of skyway and underground tunnel connect with the retail and commerial and recreaton area is built. But, the face is the skyway system extract the citizen from the street, and the original retail decrease. And the fellowing is the pedestrain circumstance decrease. Finally, the city is die out of its urban life. And vehicle take place of the plaza and urban life. It grow like cancer of the city and occupied more than 1/3 of the downtown area, which make the situation even worse. Multilevel city in Dallas is not that successful since the plan can’t be changed, so my points of design it take pedestrain life back to the city, by re-settle the downtown area. the whole is constructed in three different scale. A large linear elevated park which connect all important point in the downtown area, which give planty of rear reconnection and shaded for the city. Three new settlement, combine with retail and residential program. And serial of sky train station which reconstructed from old park garage.


Vincent has propose a ultramodern pedestrain system to downtown which combine covered walking way among the street and underground tunnel with retail.

in the 1968s Dallas government has invited Canadian urban planner Vincent Ponte for a new proposal of downtown development.

The new multiple-level system split urban pedestrain circumstan in different level. the Street is abondoned.

With restrict administrate,even shut off, by different owner. The system is indeed seperate into uncontinue pieces. and lose it function.

Today, the Dallas has becomed one of the most pedestrain unfriendly city in U.S. The city is conquerdred by wheels

Only part of the system is well-functioned today. A big part of it is abondoned and become the bed for crime.

The inclosed system unexpectly made people avoid street. and retail become restreat from downtown. So along with the residential area.


Dallas resettlement Plan Today As an physically multi-level pedestrain city. How to activate the existing system and bring people back to city is key problem to bring the city back to its second spring

re-recreation community park design Location: Beijing, China Instructor: Gang, Liu Site Area: 6.73 Hec 2013 junior project, undergrade.Solo work This project work aim to design a city park serve the citizens who live in the living quarter arround the site. Site located at Shijingshan district, Beijing. The surrrounding area has 3 city parks and a nursery garden already, which means that a normal leisure citypark has less significance here. Meanwhile, there only two basketball field within 1 kilometer and 0 free gym for sports. And most noticeable problem is that unilization ratio of both site is remain how level. Such situation make me think about how to make an unique citypark. provide multiple function and solve the problem. To slove the Contradiction of these area, I was thinking about how to make a compromise. Combining Gym and park two forms in one site. And make three most important elements of sorrounding area - CITY, GREEN, HIGHWAY flow into the site, mix, reaction. And form an unique dynamic and poetic park.

Iteration of the tension installation

The tension inside the stretched surface will be visualized by multiple apertures on it. Those aperture would open up base on the collision with the object, which we use Kangaroo, A plugin in Grasshopper, to simulate digitally. When people walk, the aperture on the shoes will open and close along with the move of body. Just like breathing in rhyth.

Object spheres provide the volume to stretch the surface, and also supported by the surface to hang in the air

This project work aim to design a dual-facade system in Guangzhou, China. According to the hot humid climate in GuangZhou, team decided to design our dual - facade system integratuing with dehumidifier to make response to variable environments in different seasons of the city. Meanwhile, the new system not only optimizes ventilation/dehunmidfier system with guiding wind flows, but also create shading with various size of holes on facade panels, to aloow air move through and ensure vision penentration.
