01 SAMI BORDERLESS (developing in progress)

Bartlett, Architectural Design, Research Cluster 1 Tutors: Déborah López, Hadin Charbel, Joris Putteneers Team with: Fangrong Lin, Yuqi Liu, Yuexi Liu Personal Contribution: Main Concept/ Overall Protocol/ Sami Background/ 3D Modelling (frags+objs) Unity (heatmap/platform/SAMIBORDERLESS.exe)/ Film (history/heatmap/Unity experience) 2020 Autumn - present History is narratives. We seek to understand the past by determining and ordering ‘facts’. However, history sometimes is written by the winners. Therefore, it triggers two different histories, the colonial ones and the one remain within a small circles called unwritten history. That results the history of indigenous are always told by outside with the stereotypes, or misunderstanding, or without the reality. It is important for human to have an equal representation on narratives. So, we take the indigenous Sami people as a case study, as their story has traditionally been overlooked or written about from the outside. Autoethnography is a tool for finding the reality of history. It is also a method by which minority groups at individual and collective levels to record alternative narratives and perspectives, even connect to the larger social issues. As mentioned it is important to find out the equality. Departs from the existing frameworks of scenario planning, SAMI BORDERLESS is a new approach of auto-ethnography platform leverages the combination of emerging technologies and protocols to consider decentralizing the history.

BACKGROUND

0101 History Background

History (from Greek ἱστορία, historia, meaning "inquiry; knowledge acquired by investigation") is the scientific study of the past. Events occuring before the invention of writing systems are considered prehistory. "History" is an umbrella term that relates to past events as well as the

8

memory, discovery, collection, organization, presentation, and interpretation of information about these events. Historians place the past in context using historical sources such as written documents, oral accounts, ecological markers, and material objects including art and artifacts.

Based on the correlation with personal and collective view of the history, there are two sides of history: side A - collective perspective which forms the worldview (sometimes the stereotypes) and side B - personal perspectives which forms the selfview (sometimes the unwritten history).

For instance, the Robert E. Lee Monument was built for honoring Civil War General Robert E. Lee, however, the monument was covered with graffiti due to the racial justice.

BACKGROUND

0102 Auto-ethnography

Research-and-researched

WHAT IS AUTO-ETHNOGRAPHY? Ethnography, as a trained ethnographer, one is always both a participant and an observer of the study’s reality. Some researchers describe the ethnographic process as a kind of subjective soaking, where one abandons the idea of absolute objectivity and scientific neutrality and attempts to merge oneself into the culture being studied (Narayan 1993; AbuLughod 1996; Ellen 1984: Berg and Lune 201 2). A feminist inspired ethnographic perspective also often involves a process whereby the research process is humanized and in which the researcher is reflexive about their thoughts. An autoethnographic approach is thus a research strategy that encourages writing in a more personal and self-reflexive way (Berg and Lune 2012, 212). Autoethnography is an approach in which the researcher analyzes his or her own person al experiences as a way of understanding cultural practices. It is the critically reflexive process of connecting personal narratives to larger social issues, and the researcher critically analyzes his or her own personal experiences in relation to other people and their practices.

WHAT IS IMMERSIVE INTERNET? ThinkBalm defines the Immersive Internet (or immersive web) as a version of the online (virtual) world that incorporates advanced technolog ies to enhance user engagement and blur the line between the user's physical reality and the digital environment. The inhabitable internet might eventually become a collective place for all humans to live, work, and play.

02 SOLIDIFYING MUSIC Bartlett, Architectural Design, Skills Workshop Tutors: Vamsi Krishna Vemuri, Arek Keshishian Team with: Liqun Ma, Haoyue Zhang Personal Contribution: Main Concept/ Prototypes/ 3D Modelling/Perspective View 2020 Autumn/ Duration: 2 weeks When looking for an initial inspiration for our project, we have noticed Chinese traditional musical instruments. In addition to their acoustic characteristics, the exquisite shapes have become the initial design drivers for of our prototypes. The chime, pipa and Konghu are chosen as our architectural archetypes. We wanted to turn the auditory sensation into a tactile and solidified architecture form. Our project attempts to deconstruct these classic musical instruments and reconstitute them as architectural elements. We extruded the string from Konghou, and twisted the new Konghou shape sequentially as column capital. The string of pipa was inflated as the main part of column, the head of pipa was formed the plinth. We retained the pureness of chime shape, and super imposed the pure shape continually. After a series of attempts, the elegant and neat columns are created which are transformed from the original elements, and the looming elements on the columns themselves will also become objects to be viewed. The musical instruments and their various components were repurposed into different architectural components. So, the columns become both supports and sculptures. And then, a new Chinese classical musical instruments museum is born, and the viewers meet their musical instruments as an artistic experience in an architectural space.

25

In the intermediate space defined by these columns, we were able to set up ramps that hover around the columns and viewing deck for people to observe the space. While visitors stroll around these ramps to observe these amazing columns from various angles and distances, it creates an immersive enjoyment to the visitors.

03 FEIYUE FLAGSHIP STORE Personal Design Advisor: Manus Leung Individual work 2019 Summer / Duration: 6 weeks FEIYUE is a famous brand for its consistent spirit of canvas shoes making. It is the biggest shoes factory in the Southeast China which establishd in 1931. After a long period of silent time, it has been popular among the young people in Shanghai because of the fashionable appearance of the shoes and the cooperation with other famous brand in the world such as MARVEL. Our assignment is to design a flagship store for FEIYUE as it has made its brand aloud. My concept is to change the way of people trying on shoes which is to reduce fatigue while standing up and sitting down. It is achieved throught the two new devices, the mirror and the conveyor belt, which allow shoes to fly around the store instead of people walking around. The procedure of people getting know about shoes step by step with the two novel devices is the logic of the building form and massing.

The interior area is the main part of the whole design, which has a mirror device along the wall to reflect the effect of people “trying on” shoes without actually trying on them and several seats in the center for people who just want to know if the shoes are truly comfortable. Unlike that people have to put on shoes to check if they are suitable and comfortable, there is a method to see the effects in advance via a novel device.

04 UNDER THE BRIDGE Personal Design Advisor: Lifeng Lin Team with: Jingjing Yan/ Boshi Chen Personal Contribution: Concept/ 3D Model Making/ Drawings of Background Information/ Concept/ Plan/Operation Mechanism/ Comics 2019 Autumn / Duration: 6 weeks The overpass in big cites is an interesting point to think about how to make use of the city surplus space. The site is below an overpass which is now being used for the light rail of Subway Line 3 in Shanghai. Through a series of research, we found that there are an increasing number of the elderly in Shanghai extremely in the district where the site located. Some old people (surplus labour) still have energy and strong spirit to work. What is more, Shanghai is among the first cities which put shared bikes into use, which leads to an enormous amount of abandoned bikes (surplus resources) because the lifecycle of them is just 3 years. We aim to use the structure of the bridge. The remaining resources of the city and the surplus labour around the site make the surplus space under the bridge glow.

FUNCTION 1 --- MATERIAL PROCESS When the bike in the storage yard was dismantled, the components will be transmitted directly to the material processing area and be disposed by the elders working here. The staff from the startup hubs will come here to offer technical guidance to the elders, helping them to better process raw materials into other things their following works need.

46

FUNCTION 2 --- PRODUCT DISPLAY After the elders processed the parts of bicycles into commodities, they will be sent to the product display zones by the conveyor belt under the bridge. Not only this zone can exhibit the excellent works made by the elders, but also it will show their values as surplus labours. Pedestrians and visitors can appreciate these works and purchase them.

47

The Assemble Area: After processing, the elderly begin to assemble the components transported here. There are also many little machines, such as 3D printer, laser cut, which can be used to reform the components.

The Processing Area: This area is used to process the components torn down from shared bikes in the storage yards derectly or indirectly (secondarily). Some makers and the elderly are responsible for the operation of these large-scale machine.

48

The Exhibition Area (Machine Display): This area is used for imparting customers how the system and makers work here. The customers can walk around the display platforms but are not allowed to walk into the machines because of the potential insecurity.

The Exhibition Area (Finished Prodect Display): After finishing assembling a series of components, a new product has been completed and was immediately transported to the exhibition area of finished products. Customers can see various of products made of old components of shared bikes here. 49

Hi, I found a micro factory under an overpass. A lot of elders in the neighbourhood are working there. Our company could entrust them to produce our products!

Disassemled parts of bicyces are being delivered to the factory.

We have received an order! Let’s process the raw materials of bicycles as soon as possible

OK. bro!

The Birth of a Product in the Micro-Factory

Products are being delivered to markets.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to our factory!

50

This is a factory that can turn discarded bicycles and other stuff into something of value again!

Grandma, what's that building under the overpass?

We are ready to work!

The processed materials have arrived! It’s our turn to 3D print them into new products!

The production process has been completed!

I'll pick out the materials we need to produce products.

Ok! I'll put our products on the conveyor belt and let them out.

Products are being delivered to the exhibition area.

05 A VISITOR CENTRE WITH A HORSE FARM Academic Design Tutor: Wei Li Individual work 2017 Spring / Duration: 8 weeks The site is located in a village in Hebei Province of China. The aim of building a visitor centre with a horse farm is to cater to the visitor’s interests and the local convention. A resort is over the other side of the hill and horses are regarded as a necessary transport to take people there. In this design, I want to explore the coexistence and sight-view of people and horses in this special terrain. The terrain of the mountains produces a variety of interesting sight-view relationships. I designed the building in a way that the horse can freely come out of the stables instead of being traditionally locked in the stables, which surprises people who are in the mountains and buildings. The concept is that people can see how the horse lives, and this is what it means to combine the horse farm with the visitor centre. So I used this concept as a starting point.
