Looming Project: High Rise Office Building [Academic] Project Site: A City in Southern China Project Duration: 8 weeks Independent Work Advisor: Prof. Xiaojian Yu [xiaojian@xujc.com] Date: 2009.9 (the 1st semester of 4th academic year)

The view from street, streetscape is a clear foreground and building become a boring background.

Looking outside from the interior, reduced streetscape become a background, and some streetscapes clearly appear through windows of elevation.

The design of the high rise building is easy to neglect the interaction between the outdoor and indoor space. Therefore the transitional space which is used to be a connection between indoor and outdoor is beginning to be used. These three sketches above express the different views from the inside and outside.

The view from street, streetscape is a clear foreground and people's behaviors in the building become an interesting and abundant context.

Design process sketches

Different behaviors are distributed at a vertical space in this high-rise building and functions of the building are basing on different characteristic behaviors. Office area is stand-alone relative through divided by floors, and a changeable space runs through the office area and connects with outside. Changing officers' sights about looking at the streetscape aims to strengthen the link between people who work inside and streetscape.

2

This building is covered with a kind of special membrane on elevation to avoid the direct sunlight. The membrane skin has some micropores, and the transmissivity reaches 30 to 40 percents. While as a full membrane skin cannot keep the ventilation well, so a series of opening are opened on the skin.

3

The membrane skin is a curved surface. Every strut's angle is flexible, so the node needs adjustable angle (such as node drawing Pic 1.2.3). Combining two nodes becomes a new node for connecting to 4 struts. Numerous new nodes form a huge and complete structure. The sizes of caves in membrane skin are not fixed, therefore flexible wireropes which connect with strut are suitable for variety caves.

SUBCULTURE Ken Gelder argued that Subcultures are social, with their own shared conventions, values and rituals, but they can also seem “immersed or self-absorbed; a feature that distinguishes them from countercultures. A subculture is a subversion to normalcy. Subcultures can be perceived as negative due to their nature of criticism to the dominant societal standard. Dick Hebdige

URBAN TRIBES According to Maffesoli, urban tribes are micro groups of people who share common interests in metropolitan areas. The members of these relatively small groups tend to have similar worldviews, dress styles and behavioral patterns. From Wikipedia

Subculture . Urban tribes Project: Community Reconstruction in Wushipu Community, Xiamen [Academic] Project Site: Wushipu Community, Xiamen, China Project Duration: 8 weeks Collaborator: Huiyi Zheng Role: Analysis Design, Major designer, Site Survey Advisor:Junhua He [heyi71@xujc.com] Date: 2010.3 (the 2nd semester of 4th academic year)

The culture of urban is never-ending change and improvement. Mechanical high-rise buildings will replace the Wushipu community nowadays. Is Xiamen painting industry leaving Wushipu community? Will Wushipu Community disappear in the high buildings? Will Wushipu Community become a victim under the urban main culture? Should cultural value be retained or annihilated in the site? Metropolises are attracting countless people who cannot experience everything in time and their requirements are over satisfied. Over requirement is lack of requirement, people need a free lifestyle which stresses personal taste and choice. Gathering numbers of artisan-painters in painting industry, keeping traditional life pattern of the village downtown in Xiamen and containing the hereditary factors of subculture. A new relationship forms between Wushipu Community with nearby trading areas, which exists among cities and does not obey the order from modern metropolis.

6

1.Most painters produce imitation paintings. 2.Art dealers purchase and sell paintings dispersedly. 3.Because rising rents, many painters have left the site to Haicang district to continue working. 4.The old district keeps the original urban texture and retain traditional life style. 5.A cultural combination between the oil painting culture and local history.

1.The economical value of the site has risen, so it does not suit for imitation paintings, however it could become a site for creative works and painting salesmen. 2.Different backgrounds is the reason that the site can not copy the model of Dafen Village, Shenzhen and that of Beijing 798 Art Zone. 3.Mixing the painting culture value, humanistic value ,and commercial value.

1.Establishing the outstanding impression of painting village. 2.Spaces for communication between the painters and their fans. 3.The sale center for massive sale. 4.Retaining traditional lifestyle and connecting with creative painting.

7

A tribe of oil painting creation, artists live and draw in the tribe, forming one of art centers in Xiamen. A banding park connects the site, and provides a leisure space for local residents as well as an exhibition area of painting, improving the streetscape and sidewalk of Xinshan Road as while as a buffer zone between the road and village. One end of the banding park is SM shopping mall, the other end connects the oil painting street. The sunken plaza is a joint of streets and park, as a place for various performances, exhibitions and assemblies. A new multi-functional building integrates parking and market.

Pedestrians cross the road is dangerous, so building an underpass combines with the park.

Residents are used to buy their foods at road in front of house, but many stands in the road result in that the road is full of slop and effluvium. Retaining this way of life and improving the environment of road.

NODES OF RECONSTRUCTION Studio was a storage room that was narrow and dirty. Combining two storage rooms into a comfortable drawing room and decorating the elevation of storage room improves atmosphere of oil painting area.

Originally, buildings are too crowd to get enough sunshine. Therefore, removing some old houses to form vegetable gardens makes buildings density more reasonable.

The kindergarden cannot meet the standard at present. So a new-built kindergarden is planned in the site.

OIL PAINTING STREETSCAPE Old folk houses retain the Xiamen traditional feeling and combines with the atmosphere of oil painting, becoming an oil painting street where contains residence, creation, gallery, sale. Every folk house has a special story and scene for itself, so virious shops attract different visitors. Salons are hold under sunshine in afternoon. Drinking a cup of coffee in the balcony of old folks. Spending your leisure time at here all day long, and slowing down rhythm of life in metro to get pleasure and wonderful. An art alley does not attract plenty of visitors and just is a site gathering a group of cultural animals.

10

PARK SENERY Green is the least color in the site. The street landscape is constructed with building materials which come from removed old folk houses. People feel the history through the old materials. Park connects SM shopping mall and oil painting street, which leads people from noise shopping mall to quiet street to experience something different in Xiamen.

Green energy resources

People are always enjoying the temperature (25 centigrades), but some technologies of air condition have resulted in negative effects to the environment. Considering the situation, the design puts forward a concept: water cycle. Water roof improves the heat preservation in roof, water in containers is the important object to show. The building cooled down via water cycle between the building and the river. In winter, PV power system generates electricity for heating water in containers. Radiant heat transer raises temperature in room. Green technology and clean energy are used in the building. The building elaborates the low-carbon concept by itself.

The average rhizome of Phragmites australis on perennial drought is higher and wider.

The average rhizome of Phragmites australis on hydrocele is shorter and thinner.

Building hides in reeds. Inclusiveness of water draws the outline of building immaculately, misted of shadow draws senery into picture. Inverted reflection in water emerges the images out of reality in vision. People, reeds, light are clear or distorted, showing the sences of illusion for people. Building is served as a foil to reed. The building looks like misty via waggling of reeds. Plants extend from exterior to interior. Reeds are not only landscape also method that divides space and enhances atmosphere. People feel the difference between seasons inside through changes of reeds’colors and shapes.

Weave Project: Entity structure [Academic] Project Site: Xiamen university Zhangzhou campus Project Duration: 15 weeks Team Work: with 8 parters Role: Structure Design, Construction, Materials Choice Advisor: Yuming Xiang [craig32@xujc.com] Date: 2009.3 (the 2nd semester of 3rd academic year)

Dreaming in the weave space. Vision has already covered feeling. Everything becomes the model, which is full of moralism, control and restriction. Civilization is another kind of destruction. Life imitates model of predecessor, Ideology copies the assumpsit of governor. Weaveing delusive love in the wilted world. Life has kept away from the character of nature. Even laugh is imitation too.

19

Air is breathless for us.Soul dissociates in the weave space until death. Refreshing feels. Exceeding all contracts in the weave world and wiping off thick with dust in the soul. Be far away routines in the secular world. Looking up and seeing a blue sky. Imaging that all of people just live for their dreams. Talking during sleep in your world. As a weaver for space.

20

The construction is made of ropes and PVC pipes, a limited space is constructed by PVC pipes, weaving ropes as a regulation, and forming surfaces to divide space. People walk in it, Seeing and Being Seen, changing our visions and sights, awaking the thinking of dream and living.
