INCUBATOR+ NURSERY AT MAPO OIL Sangam used to be an abandoned mountain of waste. Even though many efforts were taken to convert it to the Landfill eco-park and inhabitable space, the heavy pollution remains a long-lasting issue to this area. The key to this problem relies on the remediation of utilizing of plants and landscape to purify the contaminated soil. However, this process requires a significant number of mature trees with stronger root system to cover the entire area, and the transportation from nursery in the suburban of Seoul to Sangam will dramatically increase the budget. Thus, we proposed the concept integrated the eco-park with the incubator and nursery. In 2030, this site will not only provide a spectacular public realm for the citizens, but also continuously incubate phytoremediation trees to remadiate the surrounding polluted area. Our design can provide plants various environments to meet the requirement at every lifecycle stage.The tree seedlings are vulnerable and sensitive to the environment, which requires special care and handling. In this case,the oil tanks in our site are converted to large fully equipped ‘incubators’ providing ideal shelters for them. Once the seedlings grow bigger, they will be moved out to the nursery and become parts of the landscape. Because of this process, our design is able to create an ever-changing landscape. After the trees are fully grown, they will be transplanted to the surroundings,such as Sangam eco park to remediate the contaminated landfills. Eventually, the ‘used to be’ mountain of waste will turn to the mountain of trees and lives in a much effective way.

Strategies
The oil tanks are converted to fully equipped ‘Eco incubator’ providing ideal nursery for tree seedlings, which are vulnerable and sensitive to the environment.

The essence of a memorial is there for people to remember, and our design achieve it through two treatments. The first one is strong and direct – recreate the scene where fire and smoke devoured the innocent young lives. The shape of the memorial abstractly imitates the smoke roaring out of the window, and wrapping around the whole building façade from 8th floor and up. Seen closer, the material resembles the texture of fabrics that victims used to create shirtwaist, the very materials they worked with to make a living and also lose life to. Carefully placed inside the memorial are 146 triangular mirrors. Shone by the sun, blinks of light will filter through the thick “smoke”, representing the vulnerable victims who were at the brink of death.

NAME:
The second treatment is very subtle. Each triangular mirror BIRTH-DEAD placed in the memorial has one victim’s information carved on ORIGIN it, and is carefully angled so in the afternoon, close to the time where the fire started, sunlight will be reflected, lighting the vic- CEMETRY tims’ names on the sidewalk. The mirrors were shaped in triangle to correlate to the namesake of the memorial. In Manhattan, the closely seated buildings and narrow streets set the stage for changing lights, and the interplay of shadows and sunlight become a part of the pedestrian experience of the city. Thus the BIG MIRROR memorial tries to blend itself into this experience and enhance it, reminding people that the safe working environment, shortened working hour and pleasant after-work walk were made possible by the sacrifice of the workers in triangle factory. Steel tubes are treaded into the tube joint Considering the active use of Brown Building, the design carefully arranges the structure so as not to block any required fenestration. And the structure of the memorial consists of simple modules that can be easily removed temporarily for facade maintenance. Sunlight is reflected by carefully angled mirror towards the sidewalk, so there won’t be any disturbance for residents or passing traffic.

MULTIPLY IN SALT LAKE CITY

Located in the heart of Salt Lake City, block sixty-nine and seventy are bounded by three major urban arteries, which connect city Creek Park in the north to center city in the south. This site has great potential to attract people due to the variety of buildings and public spaces nearby. Despite its various spaces, one of the major concerns is the problem of super big block, super wide traffic system, and single function blocks in the city. Thus, our idea is to break down the super-sized scale and increase the diversity on site. The streets, pedestrians, and alleyways in our design are able to accommodate different activities, what’s more, to become the extension to the neighborhood.

The idea of diversity can be achieved by the MULTIPLY strategy. Based on people’s moving speed, we divide the site into three tracks as slow track, medium track, and fast track. While the medium track is designed for slow speed walkers, the fast track is for bicyclists and runners. Meanwhile, the slow track is the rest landscape area weaving the other two together.

Furthermore, we assign three prototypes: Leisure, Art, and Activity, to each track. As a result, three tracks multiplies three prototypes allow nine types of nodes with unique identities on the whole site. With this simple but creative strategy, we are able to provide diverse streets-capes full of interaction among users and possibilities in future development.

Minimal intervention and simple design are the guiding principles in our search for the largest impact with the least footprint. By installing the Light Curtain, our proposed solar units, a joyful change is bound to enrich the landscape in Solar Park South around the clock: during the day, a large amount of solar power is effectively absorbed, supplying electricity for local agriculture and production; sunset along the Tyrrhenian coast is mirrored, and people can bathe in the soft light both on the beach and in the mountain valley; after dark, a subtle glow decorates the viaducts, outlining their shapes, and so their magnificence no longer dims in the dark. Solar research institutes would find themselves with the ideal vertical testing field. Energy, landscape, tourism and local life all witness joyful changes.

We create 12 1:50 scale Light Curtain units and make several on site tests in the Charles River, Boston, United States. We expect to use these research to reveal the eve-changing beautifulness of the Light and the powerfulness it can affect surroundings.

This is a concept for Rio de Janeiro’s central waterfront. The design was inspired by the Brazilian tradition of South American gardening. The design is robust. The proposed materials are durable. The park re ects the site’s strong local identity and is designed for current and future generations. The central waterfront is a place to meet and enjoy the authentic Brazilian tradition, garden, samba, market, football, art, bar and night life. The basic composition of the elements and components are closely linked to the essence of Rio de Janeiro, the rings. There are 6 rings which include ve garden rings and one waterfront ring.

The design of the park is articulated against the continuum of the lush, shady central waterfront promenade. The many small gardens are laid out in a pattern inspired by the drawings of Burle Marx. Patterns are achieved by means of pavings, handrails, benches,... The constant presence of vegetation emerging in various forms emphasizes the di erent atmospheres of the park. In short, this design is about using the concept and form of rings to connect the neighborhood to the waterfront, reinforce the local identity and happiness of the site.

A+,NANAKO UMEMOTO STUDIO 2010 This is the pre research design for the toykyo bay Megastructure. In this research I study the mechanism of growth of the typical asian plants, reed. Based on a variety of other intervention information such as tthe urban spatial and water flow, I develop a paramatirc logic . Finally, the output is the megastructure cross bay water in the future tokyo.

We locate our design idea in Tokyo Bay, an area faces all the phenomena above: thriving economy that exerts development pressure; massive scale reclamation for industrial use; and frequently visited by earthquake and tsunamis. We envision a “Stepping Back” mechanism: Gradually relocate the industrial use along the reclaimed coastline, preserve the hard edge while create a productive landscape that is wildlife-friendly and support recreational uses. With the rise of sea-level, water would refill these hardedge-enclosed area, forming wetlands, thus recreate the soft waterfront inside. Slowly but effectively, with both human efforts and nature forces, a chain of hardedge islands with “soft” cores emerges, serving as a productive landscape in normal days, and a fortified buffer in natural disasters.

Urban Filter is a new city built on a brownfield located in the lower Schuylkill River, in southern Philadelphia. This project is my conceptual Design for Landscape Urbanism. This project is called Urban Filter since it acts like a filter for the environment which can counteract the adverse factor of the site and exaggerate it’s advantages. Introducing the wetlands and large scale landscape into the urban can not only remediate the existing pollution in the air and soil, it can also connect different urban factors together. On the other hand, creating an ecotech city can pose pressure on the refinery in the north of the site and force it to change its functions. All of these methods can make the site an ecological new city which is different from north Philadelphia.

Great civic spaces are both physically and materially distinct. They present a strong image, creating a memorable place. The planting, surfacing, furnishing, lighting and detailing are the elements that people come into contact with and remember as part of the setting. Unique, sensory environments – informed by a pier and lakefront aesthetic – help to create a place that is magnetic, unique and timeless. Chicago’s Pierscape should be such an ensemble of dramatic places, coherently organized and inter-connected, with their experience adding up to more than the sum of the parts. One of the most magical, surreal and special civic spaces in the City of Chicago should be the new Crystal Gardens. As a major indoor environment, this space should be an active attraction all year round, providing a beautiful and extraordinary space.

JAMES CORNER FIELD OPERATIONS The South Dock is the primary pedestrian promenade running the length of the Pier. This promenade has multiple demands; not only must it provide a generous public realm for strolling, seating and events but it must also accommodate commercial frontages and spill-over spaces including restaurants, bars and kiosks; access to boats and tours; performance and entertainment events; and vehicular service and access. Moreover, the varied requirements for lighting, sound systems, signage, furniture, planters, trash receptacles, kiosks and other elements leads to an often visually cluttered and confusing experience

JAMES CORNER FIELD OPERATIONS Landscape Architect We propose 4 unique and theatrical spaces to help ensure that the East End Park draws and attracts more people and becomes the must-see destination it already deserves to be: 1. The Lake Room 2. The Floating Pool 3. Lakeview Steps 4. Beer Garden On the South-West corner of the Pier we propose a floating pool; a swimming pool with a sand beach. In the winter, this pool surface can convert to a skating rink. A long line of south-facing wood seating steps edge the pool and face the sun.

JAMES CORNER FIELD OPERATIONS The second move is the reconfiguration of the interior of the park. Here a dramatic new water feature is proposed– a world-class interactive series of water fountains and jets, programmable to behave in different ways at different times. The ground is shaped to create a topographic ring and hollow, and then perforated with water jets that can alternately bubble, spray, spout, mist, rotate, flood or turnoff. In this latter instance, the surface is then available for festival, market or performance events. To the south, the lawn is tilted upwards to create a social slope looking across all the activity below. Underneath the tilted lawn is space for a café and bicycle rental facility. Kiley’s magnificent ring of Redwood trees is preserved, an enhanced where necessary with replacements

the Arc Promenade, the Planting Ribbon, theEvent Rooms and the Lawns and Gardens create a powerful landscape framework for both everyday use and enjoyment as well as for supporting a wide range of event programming, from food festivals and markets to rides and small circuses, to concerts and performances, to arts, culture and education. The design is clearly legible, iconic, playful and varied, while at the same time capable of supporting a diverse range of uses. This theatrical event site,set within a larger network of ecological green systems, waterways and world-class attractions, creates a destination legacy park for London – scenic and social on a daily basis, and eventful and active when programmed.

JAMES CORNER FIELD OPERATIONS Presently the site appears cluttered and fragmented. And yet a look at the topographic contours reveals a fairly strong and clear framework. Our design approach is based upon paying very close attention to the latent characteristics of the site and then simply clearing, removing and subtly modifying to allow a generous and robust landscape structure to appear. We do not impose anything – we instead draw out and amplify latent conditions. We call it “opening,” as in clearing away clutter and bringing light, space and legibility into focus. In turn, these openings create diverse new settings for social use (terraces, ledges, platforms, meadows, lawns, etc) and for ecological enhancement (diversity of edges, clearings, patches, etc). Openings are generous and open invitations. Created from clearing away clutter, they provide the physical and ambient framework for new forms of settlement – settlement in terms of social activity and eventfulness, as well as in terms of new species, ecologies and inter-relationships.

Parks tell us stories: each one is a poem with its own unique narrative. The Taichung Gateway Park represents different stories about Taiwanese daily life, and the richness of Taiwan’s natural environment. It renders visible a unique local history, and nourishes the potential of cultural life in the presence of a powerfully iconic tower, two major museums and a big cinema center. The Taichung Gateway Park (TG Park) is situated within Shui Nan Ecological Gateway District, a rapidly developing neighborhood in Taichung. In order to accommodate both local and foreign visitors, the approach to park design requires correlating multiple design priorities. Fascinated by the famous paintings by Huang Gongwang showing the southern Asian landscape, we created an artistic representation of the diversity and beauty of Taiwan – including areas with massive boulders sprouting waterfalls and trees shrouded in mist, to deep forests with cascading water pools and wetland gardens.

The park is divided into six areas with different atmospheres; The Nursery, The Babylon Stones, The Cascading Waters, The Bouquet of Culture, The Wetland Gardens and The Mango Boulevard. Arrayed in sequence, they gradually blend into one big linear park with a total length of 2.5km. In the current situation there is a lack of water. The Gangwei River though has a big impact on the park since it cuts off the part we call The Nursery. By using the topography of the site as the animator of water streams throughout the park a network of artificial brooks, ponds, cascades and rivers is laid out. The water system is self purifying.

The project consists of the design of the Beirut Waterfront Park, based on the competition entry, as part of the land reclamations and new urban extension of a newly created modern and future-oriented new Waterfront District. The total image of the New Waterfront District will be the contemporary extension of an ancient city of Beirut.

The aim of the design of the waterfront park is to provide a park that complements the quality of the surroundings and complies with the city’s need of a large scale multi-use green space. The park is to be a place for collective aspirations, a place where people of different social backgrounds can meet. It should be the most significant green space in the city and the social melting pot of the city, a landscape of convergence.

The West 8 team presents a concept for Parque Central. The design has been inspired by the Valencian tradition of solid narrative and poetry. The design is robust. The proposed materials are durable. The park reflects today’s strong local identity and is designed for current and future generations. Parque Central is a place to meet and enjoy the authentic Valencian tradition. The Parque Central proposal has its foundation in the historical evolution of gardens and patios of Valencia. The park consists of a sequence of different gardens where water, trees and flowers are elevated to the highest expression of Valencia’s garden history. They bring an atmosphere of fertility and of the pleasure that the city exudes. A park visit will be an experience of enjoyment and emotions. It is a place for contemplation and reflection; allowing intimate moments with nature and exchange with botany. But it is also a place of activity, a space for families, children, sports, a stage for shows and culture.
