EDGES WITHIN EDGES a vision for the Archie Bray foundation SITE LOCATION: Western Ghats, India PennDesign MLA 702 Spring 2014 CRITIC: Anuradha Mathur & Dilip Da Cunha

The Western Ghats are a mountain range that runs parallel to the western coast of India. It is one of the eight “hottest hotspots” of biological diversity in the world. From Bengaluru to Malpe, we experience a transection of Western Ghats. Malpe, our last stop, is an important fishing harbor on the Karnataka coast. Water is the mean factor that has large impact on the local economy, ecology, community.

EXISTING STAIN

During our trip, we experience the Malpe coast both in the sea and on the land. From the fishing port, to the boat repair port, fisherman’s village, and St. Mary’s island, and all these events share the same body of water, yet the presence of these events influence the quality and appearance of water. Inspired by the material spice, I reinterpret each site as a stain created by the flow of water. These stains appear to be stagnant and predictable.

PROPOSED STAIN

The splicing of new grounds would act as acupunctures that transform the whole: it responds to the current problems of water pollution, solid waste littering, fishing port overload, etc., and sets a direction for new development in the future, opens up a space where local economy, culture, and ecology that could benefit from each other in decades to come.

MALPE FISHING PORT DILUTION PROCESS

Malpe Fishing port is one of the most important ports in Karnataka. During the nonmonsoon season, large number of immigrant workers are unloading, sorting, and auctioning new caught fishes. Organic wastes generated from this process dye the water around the dock to dark blue. Seagulls, crows, and eagles share the fruits of labor with fishermen. Other industries like boat repair shop, ice company, and salt company work along with fishing industry. However, these events are at stake of disappearance as the impact of the future foreign direct investment. The process of dilution will be implemented in different scales. Firstly, I propose to insert a trench and take advantage of the tidal change to dilute the water around the dock. Secondly, the organic waste hanging on the new structure could feed birds and shellfish. Thirdly, working with local partners, in the fishermen village, the ground nearby I propose the development of small scale fishing industry related programs. Last but not least, during monsoon season, a water retention is to temporarily hold water and dilute the water in this new port.

BOAT REPAIR YARD/BARRIER ISLAND DILUTION/ACCUMULATION PROCESS Fresh Water

Salt Water

The silt brought by daily docking boats, combined with sewage water from the village, makes the boat repair dock, (which is also a station for people who commute with boats) smelly and hard for further port expansion. The intervention is to make a splice with mangroves. On the barrier island, a cut is introduced through the island. The highest tide in each month could flow though the cut and dilute the water isolated by the island. Along the cut, stepped grounds could provide the opportunity for mangrove plants to take root. Near the Boat Repair Yard, a proposed sewage trench would go along with the dock and direct silt and sewage water in specific area. Instead of creating hazards for docking boats, the mangroves and sea grasses hold the silt as part of the infrastructure of the dock.

ST.MARY ISLAND ACCUMULATION PROCESS

St. Mary Island is one of the tourism hot spots in Malpe. Its existing ecological cycle create many edges that hinder the growth of the site. The intervention here is to integrate all these edges and propose a base infrastructure for future development. Firstly, freshwater from rain season could be collected along the mangrove growing area. And the small estuary would turn to a brackish water zone. Small floating islands made by palm tree fibers would hold mangrove fruits and further expand the mangrove gardens. Solid waste could be collected by rising tide in certain areas to raise the awareness of incoming tourists. And as part of this infrastructure system, an extended dock helps people to reach the island directly instead of changing boat and walking in the water they are currently required to do.

“Roots”

Before the trip, my only sense of Africa comes from a novel, “Roots: The Saga of an American Family”. Colonization is like changing the soil a plant is growing from. After years, roots already adapted to it. How could a piece of land regain its soul?

So far we found more than 100 African New Town proposals. If one navigating through google earth, it would be astonishing to see how many massive developments are under construction. The sizes of the projects ranges from 20 ha to 300,000 ha. Large amount of foreign investment is flooding into Africa. Source:

URBAN STRATEGY

CREATE NEW URBAN HIERARCHIES AND CHANGE CITY GRAIN Water is one of the major issues in Gaborone. 1. Lack of efficient water collection point; 2. Seasonal flooding influence the normal traffic; 3. Open rainwater trenches, which goes with the road make it hard to extend safe sitewalk. “Not a River” puts forth a strategy for occupying and enhancing Gaborone’s predominantly dry riverbeds in order to not only solve problems above but also create active areas of recreation, and habitation. Despite the three rivers’ central location, they are essentially invisible to visitors and residents of the city. Rather than encourage expensive investment in exclusive architectural implants, “Not a River” proposes to emphasize the identity of the rivers as marked landscape features in an otherwise mono-dimensional city fabric of low-rise, low-density, auto-centric living.

a vision for the Archie Bray foundation SITE LOCATION: Helena, Montana Proposed Road

MLA 602 STUDIO, 2014 UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA CRITIC: Raffaella Fabiani Giannetto SOLO WORK

The studio focused on the site of the former Western Clay Manufacturing Company located northwest of Helena, Montana. The site includes the historic Western Clay brickyard as well as the Archie Bray Foundation. This studio explored how the site with its historic brickyard and structures could be brought back to life. “Instability” is about to accentuate uniqueness of the site both in terms of history and ecology. My objective is to create a comfortable working environment for the Archie Bray residents, and also contribute to its future sustainable development. The site’s uniqueness consists of its unstable condition, which is both historical and environmental. The site is going to be transformed through either controlling or revealing some unstable conditions. Historically, the previous material flow would be put into a new circulation system of the site; the changing building grids through the last decades are integrated into the new landscape design. Ecologically, the flooding issue is taken into consideration with re-grading the site; dry and wet

A certain kind of unstable condition generates risks but risks with proper control also lead to excitement and beauty. Like a skillful figure skater who dances with a thin blade on the ice could arouse a sense of beauty in the heart of the audience. Thus to reveal and control the instability on the site is what I am going to realize through the design process.
