Wool weaving manufacture was the main industry of Peterborough between 12th and 15th century. As the development of the city, little wool weaving shop can be found within the city. The site is located on the north east of the city center of Peterborough. It is closed to the historic market and next to the green field. People will hold different activities on the green field frequently. The wool weaving machines on the ground floor produce different pieces of cloth. Collage 1 - State of the island The first collage is a conceptual idea of the Canvey Island. The oil industry is a strong label to the island that I can see the industrial structure on any place within the island. Since the island is surrounded by a sea wall due to the ground level is lower than the water level. The oil pipe connects the island with the world beyond the seawall. The pipe within the collage shows that the pipe brings every part of the island together. And the wire represents the direction of the pipes. 第一幅是一个 Canvey Island 的一个概念性理解。这个地方的有个显 著特征，就是炼油产业在这里突出，在任何地方都能看到各种炼油设 施。由于 Canvey Island 地势低于海平面，所以被堤坝环绕着。 连接 外界的输油管道使这里和外界结合在一起。
Collage 2 - Sign The oil tanks, oil pipes and oil industrial structure are the sign of the island. It is an apparent symbol of the island. The structure of them is the sign of the oil industry. It is very easy to find the sign on the island. 储油罐、输油管和各种炼油设施是这里的标志，也记录着炼油产业在 这里的兴旺衰败。
Collage 3 - Heterotopic The shape of the oil tank and pipes is similar to sound pipe. There is an abandoned oil field on the island. To recycle the pipe structure, I decided to create an instrument which is played by the wind.

The site located on the southwest of Canvey island near the abandon oil field. It is an extension of the abandon jetty. The jetty is supported by some oil pipes. As the wind blew through the pipes, it will generate interesting sound. The project is a sculpture of pipes that play music with nature. According to the site analysis, the wind direction of the site is southwest and west. And the strength of the wind is strong enough to create sound via the sound pipes. The whole structure will be placed on the marshland. 此項目選地位於 Canvey Island 的西南方，臨近一個廢棄的煉油區和作為一個碼頭平台的延 伸設計。這個碼頭被一些輸油管支撐著，當風吹過輸油管時會發出很有趣的響聲。 整個項目是一個讓大自然來演奏的風管雕塑。通過調查可以了解到，這個地方的風向是西 和西南方。由於周邊沒有遮擋使得有足夠的風力來運作這個巨大的風管雕塑。整個建築會 建造在一片沼澤地上。

Ground Floor
The whole structure consists with sound pipes and structural pipes. In the middle of the building is a platform. The ground level provides seats for people to enjoy the sound. There is a pipe system next to the entrance that it will be operated by the movement of people. 整個結構由聲管和結構管組合而成。中間是一個 3 層平台，人們能穿梭在不同樓層來欣賞 這個風管雕塑。在入口處有一個小的風管系統，它能被人們的動作所觸發，從而發出響聲。

Basement
The basement of the structure is a small platform that will be affected by the tide. People can enjoy the sound of the sea on this floor. 建築的底層是一個小平台。當漲潮時，這個平台會被海水掩蓋掉。 在這裡，人們能很清晰的聽到建築與大海一同發出的聲音。

FIrst Floor
On the first floor, people can get close to the horizontal pipe system. There is an anemoscope at the top of the pipe that connects with the horizontal pipes. The change of wind direction will shift the pipes with different distances. 在頂層，人們能接近這個位於建築上半部分的橫向風管系統。這個系統由風向計通過各種大小的齒輪來控制風管的位置。當風向發生變化時，這些橫向的風管會 前後移動不一樣的距離。 27

The sound pipe has a certain proportion between the length and the diameter of pipe. Wind comes into the pipe and generates vibration on the surface of the pipe. This vibration will be converted into sound. With the same size of pipe, different material of the pipe will have a different rhythm.

Canvey Island is an influential destination of people who play Pub Rock genre of music in 1970s. Since it is below sea level and surrounded by marshland, the air of the island is fresh and clean. With nice sunshine, people enjoy their leisurely life every day. Many artists were inspired by its leisure environment. I am going to design a place to allow people to learn and make their own instrument. From the research that a super cargo ship transport gifts from China to the U.K. and stop near Canvey Island. The mariners would be a part of the user group of the design. As the building attracted people around the world, spaces would contain different qualities include acoustic,historical and cultural. Several spaces allow them to play in both enclosed and open area. The sound of the site was also a key part of the building. It would be brought into the building directly and some architectural details would perform the sound in an indirect way. So the design would create an interaction between artificial sound and natural sound. In addition, instruments in various cultures could be made in the workshop. It created communications of different culture and generate an amazing atmosphere. It would become the resonance of the Chinese and western culture.

The site is located on the southwest of Canvey Island near the oil storage. There is a river on the site that runs towards to the sea wall. So the building is designed as a part of the extension of the river and connect the river with the sea. The seawall will be used as a part of the building and a new sea wall will be built to protect the building and the site. 此項目位於 Canvey Island 的西南部， 臨近一家儲油公司。 在選區內有一 條流向堤壩的河，因此，這個項目會順著河的流向建造出一個連接內河和 海洋的建築。建築會把一部分的堤壩包活在內，然後將會在外圍建造新的 堤壩來保護建築和整個地區。

The building has a musical facade that consists with different sound pipes. The orientation of the pipes is converted from a piece of music score. It creates different spaces for people to hang in the leftover materials, which generated by the instrument workshop within the building, on the facade. There is a terrace connect the building with the facade. Pipe facade The pipe facade consists with sound pipes and structural pipe. The orientation of the pipes converted from a music score. It creates spaces between each pipe. Wall There are three conceptual walls within the building which are the main auditorium, small performance and the wall of the open studio. This idea is one of the concepts of the building.
Walk Path The existing seawall has a walk path across the building
Outdoor Performance Space The outdoor performance space uses the ramp of the existing seawall. The sound reflector of the space is the bottom of the main auditorium. It creates an interaction of music between these two performance spaces. 45

Instrument Workshop The instrument workshop is on both sides of the main a u d i to r i u m . A s p e o p l e a r e going to the entrance of the auditorium, they can watch people making instruments in the workshop.
Accommodation Tower The first to the third floor of the tower is for holiday accommodation which allows groups of people to stay for a period. The fourth and fifth floor is the hotel. People come for a few days can live in the hotel.

Open Studio The instrument design studio is an open studio that people can share their ideas with each other to create an interesting instrument.
Main Auditorium The main auditorium is with wooden surface which represents an idea of ' The Music Box'. A large window provides a view to the pipe facade and landscape. 46
Ramp The idea of ramp comes from the existing seawall that ramp leads people go over the seawall. So I use ramps to bring people to the upper level.

Wall T h e b o t to m of the small p e r fo r m a n c e shifts down to the ceiling of the foyer. It shows the idea of a strong wall.
Rhythm Timber flooring is used in the foyer to represent the idea of rhythm. The orientation of the timber flooring is converted from a music score.
arden he open garden is on the north rt of the building. It is a garden rrounded by the seawall and the pe facade. The garden is a dry rden which shows the rhythm of the ilding. People can hear the music hich generated by the sound pipe on e garden as well.
Seawall T h e b o t to m p a r t o f the building is on the level which affected by tide frequently. A new seawall is necessary to protect the building and the site.
Abandon Jetty There is an abandoned oil field on the north of the site. It is a record of the industrial development of the island. It becomes an interesting landscape within the area.
Instrument for the nature My second project creates a sculptural instrument which is played by the wind. It consists of several kinds of sound pipes. It works on the principle of the pipe organ that it will generate sound as the wind blow into the pipes.
