01. MOBILE PROGRAMS Abandoned Infrastructure Adaptive Reuse
Fall, 2015 Paris, France Advanced Studio Instructors: Emily Vogler; Andrew Hartness
La Petite Ceinture was a 22 mile ring railroad to connect passenger and freight trains in Paris, France. As modes of transportation and exchange shifted, Le Petite Ceinture was left abandoned weaving between densely populated urban areas. This project was looking into the adaptive reuse of this industrial relic. Today the abandoned rail line remains intact and this project maintained the role of carrying and connecting of La Petite Ceinture. Using the existing train track and platforms to carry various programming possibilities, integrating the cities public space network and activating the boundary of Paris. Market driven mobile programs aimed to shift the relationship between the abandoned rail line and the existing urban fabric.

SELECTED SITE DESIGN One typical site condition (trench) was selected to develop design logics as a model to apply to the rest of La Petite Ceinture. The landscape design at program stops also can stand on its own to serve as a public space when there is no program platform.

02. HEALTHCARE STATION Community Center, elderly housing and public park Spring, 2015 Instructor: Elizabeth Hermann Cooperation: Tianying Lu
Lumion Rendering Animation
Central Falls is a post-industrial city and the densest, most culturally-diverse and economically-stressed city in Rhode Island. This studio aimed to develop the northeast quadrant as a social and economic engine for Central Falls. This project focused on a small segment of that quadrant, specifically a large vacant parking lot. Utilizing an adjacent abandoned hospital building and existing housing, this project proposed a neighborhood health station including community center, elderly housing, and public park. This project aimed to solve the growing elderly issues including elderly housing being disconnected from needed services as well as from the greater community.

03. URBAN HABITATS Urban Riverfront Cohesive Habitats Park
Spring, 2014 Providence, RI Ecology/Site/Design Studio Instructor: Scheri Fultineer ; Emily Vogler
Site, Ecology, and Design. Each word is packed with complex and evolving meanings that reflect the state of human knowledge about the environments in which we live and in which we intervene. This studio was looking into the establishing urban cohesive habitats on the vacant corridor left by I-95 highway in Providence. This project focused on one of the waterfront parcels of the corridor. The proposed landscape provided habitats to Black Gum and American Black Duck in urban context and integrated it to the larger ecological environment. The market and event space could attract and collect people to engage water, and observe species with shifting spacial experience.

04. FLOW INTERACTIONS Riverfront Stormwater Experience Corridor
Fall, 2014 Boston, MA Constructed Landscape Studio Instructors: Michael Blier; Mary Lydecker
This studio focused on the middle scale landscape, through a series of site problems that explore urban public spaces. This project explored the interactions of three kinds of flow: the rainfall run-off from inland to the river, people circulation on the Street, and the tidal water. Five core moments were created on the stormwater experience corridor where these three flows interact from three directions. Using floating plants and floating ground, this project aimed to provide people with shifting experience of stormwater management and tidal water.

05. DISTURBANCE Design Exploration and Intervention Fall, 2013 Providence, RI Design Principle Studio Instructors: Adam Anderson; Suzanne Mathew
This studio explored issues of design thinking, making, and conceptual development, while also exploring the dynamic, spatial, and environmental elements specific to the medium of landscape architecture. This project firstly developed the logic of braided armature and studied the space projected from that. The phenomenon that this project explored was the shadow from canopies and disturbance on the ground. The disturbance is not physical change of the earth, but it can influence people’s sense of direction and perception of space. The intervention in Black Stone Park aimed to provide people with shifting experience of light and shadow.

06. WE’VE PLACE Rebuild the Post-recession City 6 Weeks, Summer, 2014 Central Falls, RI Leadership: DESINE-Lab Cooperation: 50 Students in RISD, PUJ, and Brown Photo Credits: Lucas Vasilko, Ivan Dario Quiñones Sanchez
DESINE-Lab is a transdisciplinary applied research lab founded for the purpose of addressing social and economic development issues in under-resourced and post-conflict communities. WE’VE Place is a 0.125 acre public plaza built primarily of locally-sourced recycled materials in economically-stressed Central Falls. The plaza, built on an unpaved parking lot adjacent to the city’s largest middle school and local restaurants and markets, serves as a “check dam” of sorts by providing a visible destination, an identity, and a gathering place.

07. GROWING ROOTS Rebuild the Post-conflict Communities 4 Weeks, Winter, 2015 Batticaloa, Sri Lanka Leadership: DESINE-Lab Cooperation: 19 Students in RISD
Sri Lanka is recovering from years of civil unrest and the 2004 tsunami that devastated much of the island. DESINELab’s involvement with the community was focused on creating a Design and Innovation Centre where creative processes and critical practices will drive the teaching and learning process. Growing Roots is a multi-purpose outdoor gathering space in post-conflict Batticaloa. The walls of adjacent dinning hall and study hall were torn down to make the two buildings related to the space which was isolated. This project not only provided an activity space for the school, but served an education program to improve their learning and living environment.
