What do you do for a living? I am network stylist at SBS, so I dress all the presenters for on air, publicity and promo shoots, plus I run the hair and make-up department. How would you describe your personal style? I’m pretty eclectic with a love of accessories. I don’t restrict myself to a particular look, I like to mix it up – colour and print one day and monochrome another. I’ve just finished a 365-day challenge on Instagram (@lesleyhasmanyhats), where I photographed my outfit every day. How do you achieve balance in your life? I have two dogs, so they get me out of bed for a walk and I try to go to the pool for a swim at least three days a week. It is a wonderful way to start the day. I eat healthily most of the time so that I can indulge some of the time. What would be your advice to other women wanting to balance their lifestyles? We all need to work, it is good for the soul, but make sure you’re doing something that inspires or stimulates you. Move – even if it is just walking in the fresh air every day. Eat well and enjoy spending time with your loved ones. What is the best advice you’ve ever been given? To be true to myself and follow my dreams. Which Ziera shoe would you wear for work? What do you do for a living? I am chief customer experience officer at Ziera. I’m responsible for marketing and the end-to-end customer experience across all of our channels, including retail and online. This means I spend a lot of time listening to customers and trying to make their Ziera experience the best it can be. How would you describe your personal style? I think I have quite classic style with a bit of a twist – I like colour and texture and even though I love black, I try to wear colour when I can. I love seeing what the new season’s trends are and mixing this up with more classic pieces. What is your top tip for women who want to look stylish? Put on something that makes you feel good. It doesn’t have to be the latest fashion, but a favourite outfit that you know suits you – with some great shoes and accessories – is the best way to exude confidence and style. What is your ‘can’t live without’ item from your wardrobe? I love dresses, they are my favourite things to wear. Describe your lifestyle in three words. Relaxed, fun, and often crazy! How do you achieve balance in your life? This is a hard one for me – I have
three young children, we’ve just finished a major renovation and I work full-time which involves travel from time to time, so I rarely feel like I’ve got it right. I love walking though, and this gives me much-valued time out in the fresh air, which always helps balance the mind, manage the chaos at home and still add value at work. What would be your advice to other women wanting to balance their lifestyles? Whatever you’re doing, make sure you enjoy it and it adds value to your life. Even when things feel out of kilter, if you love what you’re doing, the balance will return – eventually. What is the best advice you’ve ever been given? Be prepared! This is sage advice given to me by a senior manager early in my career which has served me well. Which Ziera shoe would you wear for work? What do you do for a living? I’m the executive assistant to the CEO and CFO at Bauer Media New Zealand. How would you describe your personal style? My colleague just said: “Classic and tailored with a touch of bohemia.” I’ve also been told that I’m polished and elegant. Of course I don’t always feel that way, but I do like to be smart yet comfortable in whatever I’m wearing. I guess my answer should be “confused”! I’m not sure I’m qualified to give tips on being stylish, but a friend of mine puts on bright red lipstick if she feels underdressed and she is instantly transformed and looks fabulous. I live on Waiheke island, so on a day-to-day basis my journey home on the ferry is a relaxed and sociable way to unwind. Also, lots of catch-ups with friends over wine. What would be your advice to other women wanting to balance their lifestyles? Walk everywhere and take time out to do what you love, even if it’s only a few minutes a day – every little bit counts. What is the best advice you’ve ever been given? Actually there are two: “Move to Waiheke island”, and “Go on a blind date with my mate.” Both were successful! I always believe you must give to yourself before you can give to others. This means trying to make time for yourself daily, whether it is as simple as taking a bath, sitting down to enjoy a nice cup of tea, reading a chapter of your book or indulging in a trashy magazine – anything that helps you to recharge is a good thing. What is the best advice you’ve ever been given? Someone very wise once told me that if you are being swept away by a raging river, you can either fight it (and probably drown) or you can let go and go with the flow. What will it be? When life is so busy, you need a little equilibrium to save your sanity. Easier said than done? Not with these five tips and tricks...
just say no
Last time you checked, you weren’t superwoman, so why do you try to be? Learning to say ‘no’ is an important step on the journey to achieving life balance. “Many women have a tendency to want to be all things to all people and we can find it difficult to say no,” says nutritional biochemist and author Dr Libby Weaver. Take on the work and social obligations you enjoy and excel at, refuse the others and don’t feel guilty about it. Instead, focus on the benefits of saying no, like spending more time with your family.
create ‘me’ time Modern women often have busy careers but most also shoulder the responsibilities associated with running a home, says Dr Libby. “What has unfolded for too many women is a frantic double shift of work day and night, with very little, if any, rest,” she adds. Don’t underestimate the power of a little ‘me’ time for calming the body and mind. Do something you enjoy, such as a 10-minute morning meditation, a 30-minute walk in your lunch break, or even a bubble bath to help you unwind at night. Make sure work colleagues or family members know this time is for you, and don’t skip it unless you absolutely have to. Schedule this time into your diary if it will help you stick to it.

Dr Libby says she has seen many women who have felt “overwhelmed, stressed and rushed to the point that their physical and emotional health was affected”. Prioritise your tasks and make a list of what you

We’re told not to sweat the small stuff, but by dedicating an hour to organising the minutiae of life you can free up a whole lot of time. “The rush starts and finishes with you,” says Dr Libby. Plan your meals for the week to avoid unnecessary trips to the supermarket, and eliminate morning stress by hanging your clean clothes for the week ahead in outfits. Smartphones mean we are contactable all day, every day and social networking has filled us with a ‘fear of missing out’. “We know that stress is becoming more of a problem for us, and many of us feel like we can’t switch off, literally,” says Dr Libby. Try imposing a technology curfew in the evening by turning off all mobile devices after 7pm. By disengaging from emails, texts and social networking sites, your mind will be more focused on the matters – and people – at hand. And, because the blue light from screens disrupts our sleep/wake cycle, you’ll probably get more shut-eye, too.
