Ziera’s Group Design Leader Angela Roper shares the inspiration behind the key shoe looks for summer 2015 shine on wild about camo
Spring/Summer 15 sees the arrival of the Maverick Camo, a stylish update on a perennial favourite. We’ve given this popular slide a new direction, with an abstract jungle-like feel in deep shadow tones. The cross strap is another fresh twist on this classic.
The Dana in Black Stingray is a step on from the reptile texture of last season. The Dana’s clean lines show off the rich caviar finish accentuated with a chic metallic trim for a touch of glam.
in the swim
White continues to grow in popularity, with this season’s wet-look patent playing on poolside themes. And the Lina Off-white loafer fits every bit as comfortably as its soft luxe look suggests.
mono mania
With the popularity of prints this season, we’ve created a graphic pattern that flirts with the black and white trend. While looking like a modern flat, the Devon in Black/ White Matrix has an internal wedge to provide underfoot comfort and support.
walk tall
Ethno-chic is a growing trend, with the combination of woven texture, basket weave, beading and Africaninspired prints. The flatform has been rocking the catwalk and high street for a few seasons now and our Wren in Tan Weave gives you the best of both worlds: added height while keeping your foot flat all day long.

mirror mirror
Metallic finishes remain a strong trend, with high-shine, mirrored surfaces particularly in favour. Silver and gold prevail, replacing the rose gold of previous seasons. Tyra combines high-shine Silver with Navy to create a fresh take on the block heel.

All the trends for the new season and how to work them
A
is for animal print It’s a look that’s been around in clothing since the 18th century, making it the original fashion trend. The fact it is still in vogue today is testament to animal print’s surprising versatility. So useful in fact, the print has been called a ‘neutral’ because the base colours, usually brown, black and beige, can form the foundation of an ensemble.
E
a-z summer style
Piper lace-ups in Leopard, $159.95.
is for evening Or rather day meets evening. Each new season we see more and more traditional evening items creeping into our everyday outfits – think sequins and metallic fabrics – and there is nothing like adding a bit of glam to your weekday wardrobe for an on-trend look. You can even wear sparkles to the beach.
Kylie sandals in Aqua, $199.95.
B
is for blue This summer you should be getting the blues for all the right reasons, with fashion looks embracing every shade of the hue – from delicate baby blue and classic navy to bold azures and turquoises. If you’re larger on top, keep your darker blues for shirts. If you’re more curvaceous below, then opt for trousers or skirts in deeper shades.
is for camo The camouflage print has become a must-have for women looking to inject some fashion edge into their wardrobes. Camo looks equally good teamed with heavyduty materials like denim or more feminine fabrics such as silk. As with animal prints, the key is to exercise restraint. Less is more in the style stakes.
D
F Top, $195, Ivy Blu.

Hooper flats in Black Nubuck, $229.95.
Peach heels in Camo Pony, $229.95.
Top, $NZ399/$AU389, Loobie’s Story.
is for delicate A strong trend coming through for summer is the romantic look. Think floaty chiffon-like fabrics, lace, thin pleating and easy draping. Keep your look grounded by pairing these softer pieces with something more structured – even if it’s your accessories. Add some edge by picking pieces in darker shades.
is for frills Summer is a great time to add frills and ruffles to your wardrobe. The most successful dresses have soft ruffles that cascade down the front. Proportions are important when wearing frills. You want to avoid them sitting over the largest part of your body unless you are trying to create more curves.
F A S H I O N
Hilary heels in Gold, $219.95.
G
Dream sandals in Blush Patent, $229.95.
I
is for gold Nothing says elegance or luxury like a touch of gold in your summer wardrobe. Once confined to our jewellery, the hue is popping up in all clothing items, and you can be as full-on or as understated as you like. If you’re new to the gold trend, try a few accents to begin with.
is for ice cream shades - Good enough to eat, the summer clothing colour palette is brimming with items in shades like peach, pistachio, lemon and marshmallow pink. If a top-to-toe pastel look is too girly for you, anchor a softer shade with denim.
J
H
is for jacket We don’t really associate jackets with summer – however, there are some great options for a lightweight summer cover-up. Look for styles that are less tailored than their winter counterparts to be seasonally appropriate. Being able to roll the sleeves up will also help the versatility of the jacket. Avoid black.
is for high-waisted All hail the return of the high waist. After season-uponseason of the unforgiving low-rider waists, we can thank the return of 1970s-inspired wardrobe pieces for bringing back the joy of a proper waist in skirts and trousers. This cut is universally flattering and celebrates the female form.
K
Jacket, $NZ399/$AU389, Loobie’s Story.
is for knit The fine knit is back for summer and is the perfect layering piece for those unpredictable days. The texture a knit provides can also add fashionforward interest to everyday items. Fitted summer knits look great paired with wide-leg pants or full skirts.
L
is for lasercut It’s been around for a couple of seasons now and laser cut is still on trend, especially when it comes to shoes. This detailing in summer footwear is very versatile because depending on the outfit, it can work with delicate and feminine looks as well as those that are more edgy. Joanie heels in Nutmeg, $249.95.
M
Doxie sandals in Black/White Matrix, $229.95.
is for monochrome A perennial favourite among fashionistas, nothing says classic wardrobe statement like a black and white look. To up the style factor, look for items in stripes or polka dots. If you’re really into the look, pair them with each other as the monochrome colour scheme will make the combination work.
Sigrid tote in Turquoise, $109.95.
13
N
is for neutrals A must for any successful wardrobe is a collection of staple items in neutral shades. Most of us have a number of black and grey basics, but for summer you should include white, cream, blush and beige.
O
is for orange Nothing says summer better than a zesty colour. If you’re looking to add one new shade to your new season wardrobe, then this is the one to pick. Orange includes all variations from apricot and soft coral to vivid tangerine, which is perfect for colour-blocking.
Diane sandals in Bisque, $229.95.
P
is for print Prints are everywhere this season and can be as full-on or subtle as your personal taste. If you’re brave enough to go full print-on-print, remember to mix up the size of the patterns and keep your outfit in the same colour tones.
Percy sneakers in Red Print, $129.95.
s
is for slingback Fashion icon Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour rarely deviates from a strappy slingback in the summer and has in fact worn the same style shoe for more than 20 years, proving you can’t go wrong with a classic. Wren sandals in Black Weave, $229.95.*
T
Top, $NZ299/$AU335, Loobie’s Story.
Q
is for quirky While we’re on prints, it’s the quirkier the better this summer. There really is a print for everyone. A great way to show a bit of personality through your wardrobe is with your accessories.
R
is for red A bold but classic shade, every woman should have something red in her repertoire. If the full-on shade is too out there for your style, look for prints that incorporate varying hues – from crimson through to scarlet. Red shoes are a great place to start when introducing the colour to your wardrobe. The hue of passion, red will inject personality and sass into an outfit.
Danica heels in Black Stingray, $239.95.
is for texture This season it’s all about mixing your materials to produce fashionable looks. The more interest you can add to the outfit the better. For maximum impact combine fabrics that are in contrast to each other. Silk with lace and leather with natural weaves are great examples of texture teaming.
U
Dress, $375, Loobie’s Story.
Tina sandals in Red, $199.95.**
is for underwear Never ever underestimate the power of proper-fitting underwear. We say it over and over again, yet more than two thirds of us are still wearing the wrong bra size. There is no point having great clothes and shoes if you haven’t got the foundation right, so if you haven’t been professionally fitted recently do it as soon as you can. As with shoes, the right fit makes all the difference.
F A S H I O N
Dress, $349, Ivy Blu.
V
is for vintage-inspired A nod to the past is ironically a great way to be on-trend. If your style is more relaxed, the bohemian look is perfect for incorporating vintage touches. Alternatively, a corporate style can take on a fashion edge with subtle antique additions such as lace.
W
is for wedge Love a heel but miss the practicality of a flat? Well the wedge is the shoe for you. They allow you to bring the glamour to an outfit without being overdressed, which is especially good for summer social events like barbecues or beach weddings.
Kora wedges in Tan Weave, $229.95.**
X
is for X-factor The most important aspect when it comes to fashion is to wear clothes you love with confidence and to remember that it’s the little details that can create that wow factor.
is for yellow A lot of people are scared to incorporate this shade into their wardrobe because it’s such a bold statement, and for the most part this is right. But a restrained use of yellow will have you receiving compliments everywhere you go. Use yellow in accessories to add extra zing to a classic outfit.

shades of you At Ziera, we know the importance of colour, not just as a fashion choice but to express who you are. We help you find the right ones for you
T
here is no denying colour has a big impact on our lives. From the moment we’re born, colour can be used to identify gender and then as we age, we start growing attachments to other hues. Our favourite colours can be shaped by a lot of things – memories, how they make us feel, how they enhance our skin tone – but there are other influences behind our choices as well. Ziera believes it’s important to have a wide range of shades and patterns available to our customers, so you can pick shoes that not only suit your feet but suit your personality too. So what does your favourite colour say about you – and how does wearing it affect you?
16
W h a t i s yo u r c o l o u r p e r so n a l it y? All tones are not created equal. Take brown, for instance. It can be cold and dirt-coloured; reminding you of wet winter days and muddy shoes. Or it can be warm and inviting, like melted chocolate. How you view brown will depend on your own experiences and memories as the effect of colour can be a highly subjective matter. UK colour psychologist Angela Wright created the Colour Affects System, which looks at the psychological properties of 11 basic colours and their different combination of tones and hues. She then split these colour combinations into four different personalities, influenced by the seasons, and assigned different personality traits accordingly. The four categories opposite will help you start to understand your colour personality.
Lita slip-ons in Blush, $179.95.
Summer
Personality: Cool and collected, summer personalities can sometimes be seen as all-business. Hard to win over initially, they’re very loyal once you’re in with them. Dry, subtle humour is their style and they are a fan of calm and order. Brunette or blond hair, with grey, blue or brown eyes, they have a strong analytical mind and make excellent leaders. Colours: Think the faded colours of a hot summer’s day: icy water, hazy blue skies, and pale sand, punctuated with raspberry red, grapefruit pink and lime green. Summer personalities suit rich colours as opposed to dark or heavy. Jewel tones are a favourite when they want to add a punch of colour to their subtle palette. Devon sandals in Papaya, $229.95.
Autumn
Personality: Intense and strong-willed, autumn types bring both entertainment and drama! With a strong passion for justice and current events, they’re the kind of person who’ll lock you into lively debate at a party. They value their independence but are still very friendly. Colours: Earthy, vibrant shades that represent the warm days and cooler nights of autumn. The sun-dappled colours of the leaves as they change from bright green to burnt orange and golden yellow are one example; the autumn palette is offbeat, with no primary colours represented. Plum, terracotta and olive green are favourites.
Kenda sandals in Black Camo $199.95.
I N S I G H T
S pring
Personality: Enthusiastic and sunny, spring personalities give an air of being eternally young and full of energy. Usually with light-coloured hair and eyes, and cool-toned skin, they are easy to make laugh and quick with a witty comment, but steer away from heavy subjects. They place a lot of importance on fresh air and sunshine, and are often described as being ‘a people person’. Colours: Fresh, warm and bright; just like an early morning in spring. The ideal palette is a mix between calming colours like soft cream, peach and turquoise, contrasted with sky blues, sunshine yellows and emerald green. Warm greys, tan and navy round out the most flattering colours.
Wi n t e r
Personality: Confident and organised, they can come across as quite cold but in reality they’re more likely to be shy than stuck-up. Great in a crisis thanks to their sensible personalities, they sometimes needs to soften their matter-of-fact style to accommodate other people’s feelings. They typically have dark, defined features and cooler skin tones. Colours: Contrast is the key here; winters favour either stark white or strong, deep colours. Inky blues, crimson reds, royal purples, and sapphire green add richness, but they also like the stark contrast of black in winter and white in summer. Fire and ice, the two sides of winter, are the key tones here.
Pandora heels in Black/Purple $229.95.
PHOTOGRAPHY THINKSTOCK
T he p o w e r o f c o l o ur
Red: Passion, power and energy in good circumstances. It stimulates our minds and blood pressure, and increases circulation. It can also inspire anger and frustration in some. Yellow: It’s a colour we associate with happiness, so it also boosts confidence and creativity. But keep it buttery or sunshine-inspired, as the wrong tone can actually increase anxiety. Blue: Believed to soothe pain and improve focus, blue is a good choice for helping you to relax but also to increase mental clarity! Pick your timing well though, as it can also represent sadness if you’re already feeling low. Green: New life, peace and healing, green represents nature and the great outdoors to us. Jewel tone greens like jade are said to protect against negative energy, while forest green inspires a calming feeling. Purple: Once used to represent royalty, purple has a variety of interpretations. Dark purple is still viewed as rich and opulent, whereas light lilac and lavender are very feminine and girlish. Black: The most complex colour, for such a stark shade. It can be glamorous, as in a little black dress, or dark-hearted and serious. A style classic, it’s a colour that ensures you’re taken seriously. White: In some countries white represents purity and rebirth, in others it’s a symbol of mourning. As a fashion choice, it can appear very sophisticated (think Hamptons chic), or young and fresh, depending on the style.

Pa m 65, retired
Pam may no longer work but she’s always on the go. Her days are filled with committee meetings, seeing friends and walking the dogs. For all these activities, she relies on her Zieras. “At my age, it’s comfort first then fashion. When I wear my Ziera shoes I don’t have to worry, ‘How far am I walking today?’ I never think, ‘I can’t wait to take these off!”
Janine
49, advertising manager Janine had lots of fun in her 20s – but a fancy job that required her to dress up and a love of dancing possibly contributed to the painful arthritis in her big toe. The diagnosis meant a switch to ‘sensible’ shoes. “Thankfully the planets lined up and I found Ziera. It was amazing to find shoes that look good and are comfortable.”

Fiona 36, school teacher Fiona spends her days with energetic five-year-olds – “It’s busy, that’s for sure,” she laughs. “I’m on my feet a lot of the day, or sitting on the floor with kids so I need shoes that are versatile and easy to wear.” It’s important she wears shoes that support her feet. “I have short legs so I prefer a platform. These Zieras are very comfy for all-day wear.”

TOP 10 SUMMER PREP TIPS
No need to panic – we’ve got your top-to-toe guide when it comes to getting summer-ready
1
Exfoliate: Not only will exfoliation get rid of that dead skin, but it will also help diminish the appearance of cellulite. For best results, try a sugar scrub which has an oily consistency and will hydrate your skin as you go. Whatever you do, don’t scrub too hard; use a loofah and move it in light, circular motions.
2
Moisturise: Moisturisers are out, body oils are in. We love oil because it’s translucent, so it doesn’t matter if you don’t rub it in properly. The perfect time to apply oil is once you’ve towel-dried following a shower.
3
WIN! one of four summer sun essentials kits from murad Hydrate and protect your skin with Murad’s newest summer set. Each kit comes complete in a handy beach tote and contains Essential-C Sun Balm Broad Spectrum SPF 35, Waterproof Sunblock SPF 30 and Essential-C Eye Cream SPF 15, valued at $160, from murad.co.nz. To enter go to zierashoes.com/ competitions. Entries close November 30, 2015. 36
Fake tan: There are so many offerings around these days, but the product that still holds our number one spot is the gradual tan. Gone are the orange-y streaks and missed white patches; instead you’ll find that, over the week you’re developing a sunkissed tan you’re in control of. Too easy!
4
Hydrate your hair: We often forget about our locks when it’s coming into summer but we shouldn’t. Like your skin, the sun can dehydrate hair so give it a moisture hit when you can. Try using dry oils which, in fact aren’t dry at all; they’re just not as greasy as other oils. Apply to the tips of your hair before bed; it will absorb quickly and you should wake up with glossier locks.
5
Soften feet: Hardened heels? Join the club. But you’ll be glad to know you don’t have to go to a salon to get sandal-worthy feet. For a DIY approach, simply soak them in a bucket for 10-15 minutes then use an exfoliation product to help banish dead skin. Dry your feet and
6
slather on heavy-duty moisturiser – and don’t skimp on it. Top tip: if you’re doing this before bed, put socks on straight away to lock in the moisture. You’ll wake up with the softest feet you’ve had in a while. Wear bronzer: We all know sitting in the sun without sunscreen is a big no-no. So how do you get that sun-kissed glow on your face? Simple; invest in a good bronzer. Make sure when you put it on your face, you also blend it down to your neck and décolleté for the illusion of an all-over tan.
7
Shape eyebrows: Your brows frame your face, so put down those tweezers and book in with a professional who can give you the perfect arch. If your brows are fair, get them tinted to make them look fuller.
8
Pool-proof: You don’t want black streaks down your face when you’re at the beach or pool, so instead of applying mascara, why not get lash extensions? Individually (and safely) glued to each lash, extensions will not only make your lashes longer but will make them look thicker too.
9
Update your makeup: Your skin tone slightly darkens in summer so of course you need to change your foundation to suit. But what about your concealer? Yip, that’s right, you need to change that to a darker shade too.
10
PHOTOGRAPHY THINKSTOCK
Tackle body hair: You’ve probably had a lax hair removal regime over the cooler months, but now it’s time to banish the fuzz. Shaving and waxing is so yesterday; now it’s all about the laser. It sounds scary, but depending on your pain threshold, laser may only feel as sore as waxing does. And after eight to 10 treatments your hair should be reduced to practically nothing!

th e sh oe co, si n g a p o re Back in 2004 Joanna Tan was in need of comfortable shoes – and fast. “Fashionable comfort was still in its infancy in Singapore; there was nothing to bridge true comfort and fashion. To top it off, I was expecting my first child and needed something to take all that extra weight! I was on a trip to Auckland and came across the brand. I slipped on my first pair and the rest is history.” Joanna co-founded the company Heel & Toe in Singapore, aiming to make quality comfort accessible and attractive to women with a wide variety of lifestyle needs. They then rebranded to The Shoe Co and now have three stores throughout Singapore. One type of shoe that the women of Singapore always need? A classic sandal, thanks to the ‘year-round summer’ weather. “Our customers are a pragmatic and contemporary lot and definitely dress for our hot and humid climate, but also endeavour to look smart,” Joanna says. “We are a cosmopolitan society and constantly exposed to cultures all over the world. We are a financial hub, shopping mecca and cultural hotspot all in one. The Singaporean style is all about casual chic.”
‘Fashionable comfort was in its infancy in Singapore... I was on a trip to Auckland and came across the brand. I slipped on my first pair and the rest is history’ Why is foot health so i m p o r t a n t ?
“Our feet ground us. They take us places. They
shoulder the full weight of our bodies. They probably labour the hardest of all of our body parts!” says Joanna. And so many problems with our health potentially begin with the feet – posture, back, hips, knees. Once these problems start, our mobility becomes instantly affected. So I say, feet first!!”

foot solutions, limerick Located in the picturesque Irish town of Limerick, Foot Solutions has been servicing locals’ shoe needs since it opened in 2008. Ellen O’Donoghue, the manager, says her own experiences with shoe shopping helped influence the in-store culture at Foot Solutions. “I found many sales assistants don’t help, they don’t listen, and they definitely don’t offer a fitting service,” she explains. “All of our expertly trained staff offer a free foot analysis where we can assess our customers’ exact needs.” Foot Solutions is the world’s largest and number-one ranked health and wellness franchise, with stores in Australia, the UK, America and more. The company’s policy is that good health starts with the right fit, and Ziera fits perfectly (pun intended) into that belief. “Ziera manages to marry comfort and style perfectly. They are modern and fashionable, without any quality or support compromise,” says Ellen. “Irish style is very practical – clothing is generally more on trend but the footwear tends to be more practical; the vast majority of Irish footwear is for casual city walking.”

“Many women chose ill-fitting shoes because ‘they look good’ and put their feet under unnecessary stress every single day. Shoe size is the biggest problem where women are concerned; many women wear shoes far too small or too narrow for them – causing common foot issues such as hammer toes or bunions,” says Ellen.

If you’re cruising in the summertime, which we would recommend, pack as you normally would for a typical European trip. But make sure you also pack a cardigan, jacket and long pants. European weather is temperamental at best, and if you’re having a cocktail up top while cruising you’ll want a wrap or something similar to take the chill off the night air.
all-you-can-eat buffets to seven-course degustation meals. Let’s just say you will never go hungry. But make sure you take time to investigate the local cuisine when you dock – you’re in Europe after all and some of your best meals will be from the most unexpected places.
B e n e f i t s o f c r u i si n g :
You can go to multiple destinations but only have to unpack once. Most cruises are all-inclusive so when you’re on board you never have to carry your handbag around. You can go to sleep in one city and wake up in the morning in another, making travelling a breeze. You’ll meet like-minded people on the ship. You’ll never be bored - whether you’re on the boat or out for the day there is so much to do.

Sunblock and insect repellent! Both are hard to get in Tonga so bring a good supply with you. Some accommodation is more basic than others, so don’t count on your resort supplying toiletries either. Of course, you’ll need more than one pair of togs for all those dips in the lagoon, and so you can give those water sports a whirl. July to September is whale-watching season in Tonga, when humpback whales come to the kingdom’s waters to breed. You’re practically guaranteed a sighting on the tours at this time, making this Tonga’s busiest time of year for tourism. Many operators are also qualified to take you swimming with the whales from a safe distance. Because this is Tonga’s ‘winter’, the temperature at this time is in the mid20s. If you prefer the mercury a little higher, then visit between December and April.

Here you can hire a car or take a tour to see some of Tonga’s hidden gems, including the impressive blowholes near the village of Houma, and the underground swimming hole at Anahulu Cave. There are bars and restaurants for those wanting a night out, and a fantastic eaterie in the capital, Friends Café, where you can get your latte fix and book any excursions. For a more Robinson Crusoe experience it’s worth taking an internal flight to one of the northern island groups. Ha’apai
is known for its pristine beaches and warm, clear water. This is a great place for kayaking, diving and snorkelling, and is becoming a kite-boarding mecca thanks to its consistent trade winds. Further north again is Vava’u, a popular destination for yachties because of its protected harbour, and for divers seeking clear water and underwater caves to explore.
What to eat:
Fresh tuna is almost always on the menu in Tonga, and the superfood of the moment, coconut, is in abundant supply. Coffee is grown on the island and if you’re lucky you’ll get to taste the local beans, which have a distinct, fruity flavour. The local beers are as good as, if not better than, imported ones, and most resorts stock New Zealand sauvignon blanc.

bali If you like to mix
beach time with a spot of action (and yes, shopping counts!), look no further than this Indonesian idyll Finding yo u r way :
1. Seminyak: This is the more upmarket area with lots of luxury accommodation and fashionable restaurants and bars. Seminyak is also the high-end spa and boutique shopping capital of Bali. 2. Uluwatu: Known as a surfing destination, this place has amazing waves and sunsets. If you’re not keen on getting in the water you can take in the view from the cliff-top restaurants. 3. Ubud: Located among rice paddies, Ubud is the centre of Bali’s arts scene and boasts a small treasure trove of museums and galleries. It’s also home to some mischievous monkeys who reside at the nearby nature reserve Monkey Forest Park.
Best places to e at:
Breakfast Pretty much all the resorts or villas will provide breakfast with your accommodation; however, if you’re looking to mix it up head to Seminyak’s Jalan Laksmana – otherwise known as ‘Eat Street’. So named because of the huge number of restaurants and cafés, it’s the place to find exactly what you feel like at any time of the day. Lunch Made’s Warung, Seminyak. This restaurant has been an institution on the island since it was established in 1969. While they do serve Western food,
this is the place to go to experience great Indonesian cuisine – don’t miss the ribs with young papaya – at excellent prices. The restaurant is always busy so it pays to book if there are more than two of you. Dinner Sarong, Seminyak-Petitenget Region: If you want something a bit more high-end then this is the place. While it is a little more expensive, its fusion of east meets west means there is something for everyone on the menu. Make sure you try their eight-hour slow-braised shredded beef with kluwek beansprout and salted duck.
Wh at to pack : Dress, $229, Ivy Blu.
Several pairs of togs, clearly – but you’ll need a few smart-casual options for when you hit those cafés or indulge in an afternoon of retail therapy. Head out in a pair of stylish flats in a light neutral and you can tread seamlessly from high street shopping to pre-dinner drinks! Nusa Lembongan is a small island off the southeast coast of the main island of Bali. Take a day trip or stay a couple of nights at this island paradise, which is much more laidback and simple than Bali’s other tourist areas. This is a place for relaxing; however, the stunningly clear aqua blue water also offers up surfing, diving and snorkelling for the more adventurous.
Mu st do :
Visit a spa. Bali is known worldwide for its luxurious beauty retreats. Whether you visit for a simple pedicure or a day-long ritual, this is an experience you don’t want to miss. Spring Spa in Seminyak is a great choice and offers a whole range of treatments.
