To find a design opportunity and understand the user better, I went to a visually impaired masters' massage parlor to make an investigation of five visually impaired masters there and found the following characteristics of their current lives.

Darkness in living place.

More sharp auditory sense and touch than normal person.

Need voice-assist software when using a smart phone.

They have no sense of pictures, nor taking pictures

Be familiar with the placement of objects in the room through memory.

Daily entertainments are related to "listening".

Braille is replaced by typing and voice.

Great demand for smart product.

Use intelligent devices skillfully.

No matter seen from the appearance or the spirit, penguin is extremely suitable for the design idea of this parent-child vehicle. After confirming the design guideline, we collected several groups of largesurface products as design inspiration to draw early sketches.

KAI Chair Individual Project Jan. 2016 – Apr. 2016

Create a chair meeting the living needs of modern Asian people and inheriting aesthetic wisdom of Chinese Ming-style furniture, based on modern solid wood technology.

Design Objective

Target User Meet living needs and modern aesthetics of Asian The physique of Asian population is averagely smaller than that of American or European population. Therefore, there are differences in measurements of the chair. While inheriting people-oriented and Ming-style aesthetics design philosophy, it is necessary to meet the restraining and implicit cultural style of East Asia, concise but not simple.

Salute to Hans Wegner’s The Chair

Inherit aesthetic wisdom of Ming furniture

The Chair is the most outstanding work achieved by Hans Wagner. It is so simple that everyone thinks they can approach it. The structure of the Chair enables the users to adjust to the most comfortable position no matter they are fat or thin. During the design, the simple and people-oriented design style of Hans Wagner is inherited. It’s necessary to take off hat to it.

Though Ming furniture has a long history, it contains unique aesthetic style. Its Ming round-backed armchair is the masterpiece that could mostly manifest its aesthetics. Neutral harmony, the opposition and unification of Yin and Yang, the greatest beauty is the simplest, seeking unification in change are the essence of this wisdom.

I would like to orient the target users of this chair into the young people with certain pursuit of life quality and certain aesthetic ability for such people are main users of future design. They have the ability and passion to pay for good design.

Application Space

I hope that this chair is simple and concise. It can be integrated into different scenes of life.

Learning and Experience 1. It is the first time for me to make solid wood furniture. The consideration into the stress limit of the wood is not given in the early stage. Thus, the dimension of chair leg is widened when it is made actually in the late stage. So, there is a little deviation from the design finished in the earliest stage. The priority will be given to considering the problems such as stress and stability under the premise of pursing external shape when designing the furniture in the future. 2. Through two months’ learning and making process, most of modern solid wood technologies is are conquered.

Next Step Jointly make second-version KAI CHAIR with the masters from furniture factory and finally have them listed and sold.

Different application scenarios are matched for different chair cushions to integrate different living spaces and lifestyles.

Individual Project Oct. 2015 - Nov. 2015

Create a visual riding navigation to solve the insecurity and inconvenience of traditional mobile phone navigation, combining with mobile application.

The Problem

1

Cannot get the cell phone navigation device out in time.

When we are riding, the traditional navigation device is either vocal or being presented on a screen. These traditional navigation devices are highly inconvenient and there are numerous risk factors involved.

2

The noise from outside can interrupt sound listening.

3

Personas

Watching at the screen can cause a serious accident.

Lea came to Hangzhou last year and he is managing a buyer shop in urban area. Due to excellent scenery and weather in Hangzhou, she chose to buy a nostalgia style bicycle rather than automobile. She said that riding is a relaxing way. She always sees inexperienced sceneries in each cycling, which is the opportunity for me to understand the city. Lea came from Germany, who is unfamiliar with Chinese and Hangzhou, so mobile phone navigation is necessary for her travel. He uses a holder to fix the navigation in the handlebar. She said that mobile phone navigation is inconvenient, with the expectation to have better choices.

I have encountered with Li Ke and Song Jiliang in campus couples with good relationship in campus square who respectively students are majoring in architecture bioscience. They said that riding is their trip mode every day due to large campus. Bicycle is their best choice no matter to go to class, shopping mall or friend gathering. Due to familiarity about school environment, there is no need for navigation. However, once being outside the campus, and being in somewhere unknown, they often get lost. It is also inconvenient to use mobile phone maps for that they often worry about getting in wrong way.

Liu Wendong is a stunt ride in western Hangzhou. Take exercises in cycling techniques is his work every day. As to him, riding is his only trip mode except rainy and snowy days. In spare time, he also travels through streets and lanes in Hangzhou with team members or friends. However, he said that although he has been to many places, mobile phone navigation is still needed sometimes, especially when he is competing abroad with unfamiliarity about cities where there is high frequency to use mobile phone navigation.

Uri Individual Project 2016 RISD Summer Studies

This is the last project of Introduction to Furniture Design: Welding + Metal Work in RISD Summer Studies of 2016. It is required by the project to adopt any technology to make a piece of metal furniture. I chose to use bending tubes to make a piece of furniture with a minimalist aesthetic sense.

Models

Traditional Rocking Horse has only one use mode. When children are tired of traditional Rocking Horse, it will lose its value. Now there are more and more multi-children families. Therefore, considering that both Rocking House and Cradle will swing, why shouldn’t I integrate the two modes in one?

1:1 Prototype Sketch

In RISD’s Furniture Studio, I adopted technologies learnt from the course to make a 1:1 furniture product. During the process, the most difficult step is contantly comparing length of iron tubes, cutting, then welding and making the model.

Shelter Bench Team Project Dec. 2014

This is the final project of the course in the first term of sophomore year Design Thought & Expression. Try to find available design opportunities in modern urban public facilities to solve certain social problem. Our pair work group will aim the target users at group of the homeless in the hope of solving or improving their existing survival problems through design.

Target

Research

According to a report from the United Nations in 2005, more than 10 million people are homeless all over the world.

We interviewed 8 homeless people and observed their daily life behaviours in the train station, beneath the bridge, on the street and so on to find out what is the most nessesary demand for them to survive in this city.

The homeless probolem has became a global issues. No matter in the most powerful country the US or in the developing country such as China and India, There's a lot of homeless people living on the street.

Opportunity Explore public facilities that can be improved or redesigned in cities according to the most frequent place where the homeless have activities and live.

And there are a lot of living problems for them. No, not about live but survive.

Empathy Map The service objects of Shelter Bench are not only tramps but also more importantly the other citizens. For this reason, we have built empathy map for tramps and other citizens to help find out the associations and contradictions between the both.

What does she HEAR?

Why does that tramp always hang around nearby? There are some drugs at home, go get it for him or not. It seems that he gets hurt?

"I hear that this tramp has been staying here for months. A child is scared to cry by him. " "Tramp is so dirty. Perhaps, he suffers from some disease."

Brain Storming

What does he THINK AND FEEL?

What does she THINK AND FEEL? What does she SEE?

Everyone completely doesn’t pay attentions to tramps or look down upon them. Everyone doesn’t respect material and spirit aspects of the tramp.

What does he HEAR?

It’s too cold under the eave and the quilt is completely not enough to use in the evening in winter.

"That tramp is so dirty, get away from him" "Go away! Don’t stay here! You are so dirty and you will influence our business."

What does he SEE?

Brainstorm and find out design opportunities according to the investigated survival status and problems & demands of group of the homeless.

The passers-by ignore him, and dislike him for he is too dirty. Gradually driven by neighboring citizens and shop owners.

What does she SAY AND ACT?

What does he SAY AND ACT?

Keep away from the tramp. Give him some old clothes.

I can’t get job. What I have is just the quilt. I don’t have good sleep every evening.

PAIN

GAIN

PAIN

GAIN

Worry the tramps wandering around to steal or rob. Worry about the safety and health of the tramp

Surrounding environmental safety, clean and tidy People further respect on tramps and live together with them.

It’s too cold in the evening. It is more difficult to survive in rainy and snowy days. Beaten by the drunken man sometimes, No one respect you

A warm place where one can sleep. A safe place. Gain sufficient respect

Hangzhou is a tourist city, where there are numerous long benches whose use ratio is low.

According to investigation and interview, about 70% of tramps live in park or along the street.

Keeping warm, safety and diet are the maximum demands of tramps. The organizations such as Buddhist ancestral temple, governmental rescue station and social organizations have already provided assistance in diet. Therefore, living space turns into the problem to be solved urgently.

Social issues cannot be fully addressed by the design of certain product, instead, it requires join effort of the entire society, including the government, NGO and every urban resident, to create better urban life in virtue of management and design. Hope that I could try more design proposals with respect to social issues in the future, and become a designer who has real responsbility for the society.
