EXPERIMENTAL CRANBERRY LANDSCAPE NEW JERSEY

A group work in 2018 PennDesign 601 Studio, groupmate include Yifei Zhai/

The Kirkwood Cohansey aquifer breeds a very rich varity of species, but we still call the land above it “barren�. Perhaps that is because it has been mined, logged, farmed and abandoned, leaving ghost towns and threatened pine forests. Seawater is approaching -- forcing change upon the gentle and tenacious black streams necessary to maintain the richness of fragile life-system. The abandoned cranberry bogs are the open window for us to explore this mysterious barren. As a medium, acidic water is a tool for us to understand and enhance the vitality of this space.

WATER AND AGRICULTURE LANDSCAPE ILLINOIS

A group work with 2017 Fall studio, only personal and contributed works included

This project was aspired by the pollutions of agricultural nutrients. We focused on the current policies and regulations on agriculture use nutrients such as nitrogens and phosphorus. Since there is no rules or laws about the usage of nutrients in agriculture, the goal of this project is to use research to find quantitative representations about the damages from the chemicals to mississipi river and the Gulf of Mexico. The ultimate goal of this project is to encourage farmers to use better techniques of applying nutrients and have governments have rules and laws about them.

Wetland

The concept is to bring people back to the agriculture. The trail is designed looped around the city, where people can hike and bike around. There bioswales and wetlands implanted to filter the nitrogen and phosphorus.

These are some of the plants used in the bioswales and the wetlands constructed in the field and near the river. These plants are used as natural filters that takes up the excessive nutrients, nitrogen and phosphorus.

These are some of the species that we aim to maintain or rehabit for. They would mostly be around the wetlands and pollinator pockets along the trial. One of the goal from this project is to restore the original habitat in the area, both for plants and wild lifes.

The site use to be one of the most heavy used industry corridor in Chicago, now after most factories moved to other places, the site is mostly vacent. My group has foucs on the Economic aspect of the site, and the design is to create new identity to the city, making this area a new place to go for people, expecially for the basketball fans, and it does not only limite for the Bulls, but also the womens professional basketball team, the Sky and the Lovabulls, the cheerleader team. But it is also designed for logistic company and other recreational use.


Economic Development History Line

The North Branch Industrial Corridor is designed to locate heavy industries, such as metal, brick, lumber, fur, feather and more factories. It was heavily used during the early 1900s. This timeline looks into the number of business in a 100 years time range, from 1905 to 2015, and then we made our own interpretation of the site for the future. The businesses were divided into 5 catagories, which are Manufacture, Raw Materials, Public Facilities, Storage and Small 14 Businesses.

Evacuated site has been empty, and created a contraste between the commercial street on the border of the site.

Since the Finkl Steel Co. was the staple of the site, after most of the factories are relocated, the site has losts its identity.

The site losts its economic power and contribution after the site has emptied.

The site has been polluted by the factories before. The air, water and green spaces has all been traumatized in certain degrees.

During the design process, we took the consideration of what the local communities wants, created the Community strategy annual plans, looked at the hotsptots that based on traffics, and imaged a day of what a basketball player, bartender and office woker would live like.

Public transportation diagram First we looked at the potential pedestrian flows in going in and moving in between the site.

Then we looked at how the flow can be connected better, so we added yellow strip as a bridge.

The yellow strip represents the bridge that connects the stadium with other parts of the site. It allows people to travel safely between car lanes.

This is the final pedestrian flow designed by us after the implantation of the bridge.

The implantation of a bridge is to make the pedestrians have better accessibility throughout the whole site. Since there are car lanes cutting through the site, having a bridge seems like the best option for pedestrians since the vehicle traffics are very busy in those two lanes. The new location for the Bulls’ stadium make sense since there are many ways people can access the stadium by public transportations. There will be new bus stops implanted near the Stadium. The purpose of new stadium is to make the Bulls their own identification. Since the site has lost its original identity, it would be great to make it new home for the Bulls, since they were such legendary team.


Riverwalk perspective

These are the perspectives of the site. We used a existing stadium as our stadium, but it’s opened for other architects to design. The riverfront is similar to the downtown riverwalk, where leisure spots are located for workers and communities.

This area is a unique design element. We installed a artificial river that functions both socially and environmentally. The water used is pumped from the river, so it filtres the water, and the water is going back to the river after filtration. The artificial river is very shallow, it can be used by the people during the summer. They could put their feet in the river and have fun. The area is surrounded by trees to isolate the area from the busy city. It also has a small artificial island that is filled with grass and trees, people can easily climb up and down.
