veryone needs to escape to the peace and quiet of the g reat outdoors from time to time. Activities such as hiking, hunting, foraging for mushrooms and long walks with the dog provide a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Most of the time, we dress appropriately so that we can stay warm and dry if we encounter bad weather and rough terrain. That’s basic knowledge. But how should you respond to an unforeseen situation? If dark, stormy weather takes you by surprise, or you realise you’re lost. Perhaps you’ve injured yourself badly and can’t go on without assistance. And what if you’ve left your phone at home? Now you’re in a serious situation. The decisions you make over the next few hours may even make the difference between life and death. So what should you do? We talked to a man who knows the answers.

Torbjörn Selin Chief instructor and founding proprietor, All in Nature Sweden. Survival skills instructor with the Swedish armed forces and the Swedish Survival Guild. Torbjörn has dedicated the past 18 years to teaching survival skills to over 1,000 people: soldiers, civilians, businesses and voluntary organisations.

”Praeparatus, supervivet” TO SURVIVE, BE PREPARED

urvival is all about thinking ahead, planning, not biting off more than you can chew and not taking excessive risks. Survivors have the ability to adapt their actions to prevailing and changing circumstances. A true survivor won’t tell any stories about being close to death, because that would indicate poor planning or sheer bad luck.” As he talks, Torbjörn Selin pours steaming hot coffee from a charred pan on the fire. A survival skills instructor with the Swedish

armed forces and the Swedish Survival Guild for more than 15 years, he has taught over 1,000 people how to look after themselves in a crisis situation outdoors. “In a survival situation, life is at stake, and your actions can have a direct bearing on the outcome,” Torbjörn continues. “Knowledge, experience and equipment all affect your chances, but at least as important is the will to survive, to never give up and to never stop fighting. It’s more a battle of willpower than a physical fight.”

The first thing to do: remember S-T-O-P

STOP Sit down for a while. Make a cup of coffee. THINK calmly through your situation. ORIENT yourself. Where are you? What equipment have you got? PLAN Stay where you are or move on? Send out a distress call? Pitch camp?

How to make a fire

Collect small dry twigs that are as dry as possible. If you can’t find any dry branches, choose spruce, which is almost always dry inside. Gather more sticks than you think you’ll need, and do so in daylight.

Recognisable plants and berries within easy reach should be your first resort, and fish if possible.

Tea brewed from pine needles is refreshing and rich in vitamin C. Instructions: Place approximately 100 ml of pine needles in 300 ml of cold water and boil slowly for 10 minutes. Strain off the needles.

Humans can survive without food for over 40 days but need water after three days.

Using your knife, carve the sticks into shavings to use as kindling. Dead, dry spruce twigs make good kindling,

Use a fire starter to make sparks and ignite the fire. A lighter may stop working, but a fire starter will always work.

Ignite the fire in stages, adding more kindling as the fire takes hold. Keep the sticks under cover while you are getting the fire lit.

You now have a fire that you have to keep alight. Dry off new firewood next to the blaze. Place some stones close to the fire to warm up, so you can use them to warm yourself when you’re trying to sleep.

MATERIAL AND FUNCTION

Water resistance Are you planning outdoor activities and want to keep warm and dry? Then make sure you buy waterproof garments. Water column, a value given in millimetres, is often mentioned in the garment’s specification but what does it mean? Water column is a measure that is used to specify how large a water pressure a garment will withstand before it starts to leak. The material is tested for waterproof qualitites using a “water column”, a tube with a diameter of approx. 2.5 cm. While the tube is placed vertically onto the material, water is poured in. The height of the water when the material starts to leak is then recorded. A water column value of 10,000 mm means a load of 10 metres water depth in the tube.

Can be water resistant, but not waterproof.

2000–5000

Waterproof against rain, but not resistant to pressure. Leaks when sitting or leaning against wet surfaces.

5000–15000

Fully waterproof in rain and resistant to many forms of pressure. Only at very high pressure, for example, prolonged sitting begins to leak the material.

15000–30000

Fully waterproof, even under the most extreme pressure.

The traditional softshell material is very resistant to wind and water, has a durable surface and a reverse with a membrane of soft microfleece.

Our sweatshirt gives you that little bit extra. Double faced means that the outside of the fabric is identical to that on the reverse. A slightly thicker sweatshirt material that offers an exclusive finish while retaining the fit.

Softshell Light is a very light, soft and flexible membrane-free material with 4-way stretch. It has excellent breathability and a water-repellent surface.
