‘It was a challenge because I’m used to drawing at a very small scale. But I do enjoy drawing murals - I say drawing and not painting because I use Posca pens - and overall I am quite pleased with how this one turned out.’

INTERVIEW WITH GEMMA by Cooler Magazine

Q:

ê A: Q: Are there ever any messages behind any of your illustrations?

Without getting too psychoanalytical, there are definitely echoes of my life - growing up - feeling like a misfit, which is an obvious theme. I seem to have an empathy with people and animals that are a bit, let’s say “different” and I think this is often reflected in my work. But it’s not a sad thing, it’s kind of a celebration of being unique.

What inspires you to draw?

ê A: Mostly people I see, animals, things I hear. I’m the girl quietly sitting in the corner with a coffee and a sketchbook. And yes, I’m probably drawing you, especially if you have a comical hairstyle/pet/accent.

Q:

What advice would you give to someone who wants the doodles in their notebook to be more than just doodles?

ê A: Don’t worry too much about being neat and tidy, that’s the point of a doodle. Relax and draw whatever comes into your head.

MUSEUM OF ART & DESIGN (MAD)

ABOUT

75

Founder, Ms Jasmine Tay boldly introduces a brand new concept for Singapore, opening her first private Museum of Art & Design (M.A.D) in the heart of Orchard Road. Sitting on the 3rd level of Mandarin Gallery, MAD will be the first art space to feature an art museum that will feature important and usually inaccessi- ble pieces of contemporary art. In the exclusive world of art, MAD’s main intent is to educate, excite and extend the world of modern art to those who have not been privileged enough (yet) to immerse and experience. With its exciting calendar year of emerging and superstar artists lined up in various exhibitions and events relating to fashion, art, design and life- MAD is the destination for not only art purists and buyers but also to those who can appreciate the influence of art and design on our every day life. Its multi disciplinary and lateral approach is why MAD is truly mad about art. In addition, MAD will be hosting regular visual installations, real time work by artists in residence, work- shops, seminars and parties within. An art boutique will also be housed within the space to allow partici- pating artists to express themselves in ways outside of the traditional media such as merchandise. As the art world gets more intertwined with investments and extensive marketing, Jasmine hopes that MAD will stand apart from the rest by being a place that above everything else- genuinely prioritises the apprecia- tion of art for the sake of art. This is why the focus is on making art accessible and nurturing a new generation to admire art as well as have the opportunity to experience art as it is for the exclusive niche of buyers and dealers.
