The project is to achieve equal rights between the indigenous tribe - the Batek community and the urban people. The hands of hope symbolize how the community can help each other preserve the biodiversity on earth and balance the forest and the city. The self-identification of Batek as a citizen can be enforced by bridging the gap through communication and exchange in terms of experience to build up an intercultural society.

THE STORY OF BATEK TRIBE

Guardian of the Forest

Extinction

The Batek tribe are a group of indigenous Malaysians known as Orang Asli who live an unassimilated lifestyle. Hunting, gathering, and trading forest goods provide them with a means of subsistence.

Many Batek have lost connection with their indigenous environment over time. The rapid deforestation of Malayan rainforests is putting their way of life in jeopardy, as logging and agriculture widen the divide between them and the forest.

Relocation

Hands of Hope

As nomadic hunters and gatherers, the specific location of their communities varies depending on the territory they occupy. However, the Malaysian government began pressuring the Batek to relocate to a government-subsidized town immediately outside the park’s borders in 1979.

A community of people, organizations, and government needs to develop local indigenous communities through jointly developed activities. They must commit to engaging local communities in developing countries to help preserve the biodiversity on earth.

The hall is used for formal events in which Batek and urban people share information and knowledge. It could be used for a conference event to inform outsiders about the site issues and how they can help to achieve a sustainable ecosystem.

TOWN HALL

The space is to appreciate nature by amplyfying natural VOICE OF FOREST sounds such as birds chirping, river flow, wind sound, rustling leaves, wildlife sounds and so on. It also serves as a place to learn the senses, including but not limited to senses of belonging, appreciation and freedom.

The hall can be used for events such as forest festival, vaccination venue, voting and elections. It also acts as a meeting point for Batek and urban people to exchange lifestyles.

MULTIPURPOSE HALL

The open library encourages the Batek people to improve their knowledge through reading. It also serves as a space for urban and Batek people to exchange lifestyle knowledges.

OPEN LIBRARY

One of the ways to bring people together is through sports. Urban people can meet with Batek people to build relationships while spending time with nature.

SPORTS FIELD

The accommodation allowed members of the NGOS to stay on site while conducting research, studies and organizing events to resolve the issues. It also provided a camping area for those who would like to experience a stay in nature.

REVITALIZING : BUILD BACK BETTER THE RENEWAL OF THE PORT OF BEIRUT : THE GREAT RESET 2021-07 DESIGN STUDIO 5 LOCATION : PORT OF BEIRUT, LEBANON TUTOR : MR. BAKHTIAR AMIR

PRE/POST CATASTROPHE

Beirut is one of the top ten seaports in the Mediterranean Sea and is regarded as the Middle East’s gateway. The port was developed from a local port to a regional and transhipment centre through self-financing. They are well known for their seaport activities as the food supply of Beirut city mainly depend on imported food. After the blast, the port is currently putting huge effort into rebuilding economic support.

POTENTIAL

URBAN STRATEGIES - OVERALL PROGRAMMES

The new crane system and multi-level container system aim to address the port efficiency caused by the explosion. Aside from that, the unused containers are recycled and converted into temporary shelters for homeless people, mainly focusing on people who lost their houses due to the explosion in the port back in August 2020. The underground storage is planned to manage the storage’s safety on hazardous substances that may cause an explosion. From the silo port, the users can access the underground. In between the new and refurbished silos is the floating farm, which eases out the transportation on food storage. The linking bridges and escalators connect the users to the whole site and different levels.
