PORT OF BEIRUT, LEBANON Beirut is one of the top ten seaports in the Mediterranean Sea and is regarded as the Middle East’s gateway. The port was developed from a local port to a regional and transhipment centre through self-financing.
3
TIMELINE Beirut used to be under the Roman empire and experienced Civil War and bomb attacks from Syria. The citizens protested against the government, which shadowed their waste crisis, safety issues and others. In 2020, a massive explosion occurred in a warehouse which struck the economy in Beirut. In 2021, the local artists commemorate the victims through sculpture and portraits.
4
SITE INTRODUCTION The Port of Beirut is located at a strategic location surrounded by mountains. They are well known for their seaport activities as the food supply of Beirut city mainly depend on imported food. After the blast, the port is currently putting huge effort into rebuilding economic support.

PRE/POST CATASTROPHE
The activities around the site underwent an analogous disintegration operation. The top image shows the pre-explosion, and the bottom image shows the postexplosion. The explosion next to the grain silo building caused food shortages in the city to be more severe and affected the vulnerable economy. 8

FUTURE VISION
The future vision is to utilize the mobilities and emphasize the integration between the activities like tourism, floating farming, memorial park, and others with the application of renewable energy. The aim is to ease the economy of Beirut and attract more local and international travellers to the site. 12

Integration & Connectivity
Food Production

2
Sustainability
Tourism 21
1 integration & connectivity
The intermodal network act as the main spine to connect the users from end to end in such a long site. Besides, a canal is being carved out between the site to allow the ship-to-ship cargo transfer, maximizing the productivity within the port of Beirut. The aqueduct that responds to Roman history act as the branches to differentiate the zoning of the activities and allow connection between them. There are also bridges and escalators between each zone to connect the users to the whole site and different levels.
22
2 SUSTAINABILITY
The second aspect focus on sustainability in urban planning. Green energy plays a pivotal role by installing a rainwater collection system due to the rainy season in Beirut from November-February annually. Moreover, windfarm and solar panels are also planned in the port as Beirut’s strategic location is surrounded by mountains. The solar panels are mostly installed on the roof of the railway station or the buildings to save spaces and increase solar efficiency.
23
3 Food Production
Furthermore, food production and security are also included in the planning of Port of Beirut to reduce the reliance on food imports. A moderndesigned floating farm poultry and crops farming is expected to produce foods to help alleviate the food shortage in the cities. Besides that, the new silo port and the refurbished silo building are both next to the farm, expected to increase the storage capacity.
24
4 Tourism
The urban strategies are expected to spur domestic and international tourism as part of the economic recovery plan because of the explosion. A planned bazaar and cultural & heritage zone are on the project site to promote Lebanese culture to the local and international tourists. Besides, a recreational park near the waterfront offers a comfortable area for the local community to hang out with their loved ones.
25
blow up detail 1
The new crane system and multilevel container system aim to address the port efficiency caused by the explosion. Aside from that, the unused containers are recycled and converted into temporary shelters for homeless people, mainly focusing on people who lost their houses due to the explosion in the port back in August 2020.
26
blow up detail 2
The underground storage is planned to manage the storage’s safety on hazardous substances that may cause an explosion. From the silo port, the users can access the underground. In between the new and refurbished silos is the floating farm, which eases out the transportation on food storage. The linking bridges and escalators connect the users to the whole site and different levels.
27
blow up detail 3
A passenger ferry terminal was planned to attract more international tourists, especially those boarding cruises, to tour the Mediterranean Sea. The open theatre is planned in the centre of the tourism site to allow accessibility from all directions. The boat charging station is under the green energy station to reduce the usage of fuels on boats.

site approach
Total Land Size = 1.5 acres + 1.0 acre = 2.5 acres
The selected site is to encourage a culture of innovation in the system. It is located next to the memorial park on the tourism site. This would help create connections from local and international travellers and boost the economy in the site by commercializing to the end-users. At the same time, it can launch schemes on innovation programs in education.
30
photography of selected site
The selected site is located adjacent to the ruined silos available after the explosion happened in the port of Beirut.

building potential programmes
TARGET USERS -Tourists -Youngsters -Students -Entrepreneurs -Businessmen -Government official
The main aspects of the programs are to connect, inform and innovate. The programs aim to drive innovation in the city by providing a platform that allows information sharing between industry and academia while allowing people to connect with ideas.

almawsil, the connector The main purpose of this project is to forge a synergy between port and tourism activities via re-development. The proposed redevelopment plan for Port of Beirut aims to drive innovation, improve economic and social well-being in the city by including an innovation centre, grain museum, silos, and floating farm.

CASE STUDY THE FACTORY Ricardo Bofill
Ricardo Bofill discovered an abandoned cement factory in 1973, a turn-of-the-century industrial complex with over 30 silos, underground galleries, and massive machine rooms, and chose to turn it into the headquarters of Taller de Arquitectura. The renovations took two years to complete. The factory, which had been abandoned and was mainly in ruins, was a jumble of surrealist elements: stairwells that led nowhere, massive reinforced concrete structures that held nothing, bits of iron suspended in the air, and vast empty areas . The renovation began with removing a portion of the existing structure to reveal previously hidden forms as if the concrete had been moulded. The process of adapting to the new programme began after the spaces had been identified, cleaned of cement, and surrounded by lush plants. o derum, vollect iorepre doluptaqui doloribus, quaspidero blab iducia nime cusam, INDUSTRIAL ARCHITECTURE 80

GRAIN PRODUCTS
GROWTH CYCLE OF GRAIN
Before a massive August storm, Beirut port could handle 10,000-15,000 tonnes of wheat and other bulk cargoes per day. Because Lebanon lacks grain stocks, the need for seamless imports is all the more essential. The most common types of crops of grain that can be found in Beirut, Lebanon, are barley and bulgur. o derum, vollect iorepre doluptaqui doloribus, quaspidero blab iducia nime 81
