Infinite Life Year: Oct. 2014 - Feb. 2015 Location: 18 Martin st, Blakehurst, NSW Site area: 490m² Building area (additional): 90m² Category: Residential buidling Type: House, Residential Client: Yijie Huang Status: Under construction
"Architecture reforms people's perception"
The project site is in a typical residential backyard located in the southwest suburb of Sydney. The European quality of the existing house is from its previous German owner. However its present owner is from southern China, where the conventional architectural thought is still strong. How to integrate the idea and experience of traditional Chinese architecture with the existing site contexts has become as one of the most important points of the whole design. The project itself will be an architectural experiment of creating a new domestic lifestyle and promoting the integration of different architectural cultures. The site is surrounded by numbers of residential houses in different architectural forms. The unique site character of introversion is quite similar with the conventional Chinese courtyard housing, even if they belong to different cultural contexts. How to embed a new architectural experience within the limited site area is another challenge of the design. "To feel the infinite light and nature in the finite interior space. The boundary of outside and inside is merged by people's feeling."

I n o rd e r t o u n d e r s t a n d t h e s i t e spiritually throughout a particular way, the designer tried to create an inner link between the venue and himself. What kind of gesture the design should be expressed within the site? How does the design connect people and site? The left sketch shows the initial interpretation of the site atmosphere by the designer - an inward directed site with limited natural scener y. However the new design should be integrated with the existing site as well as reinterpreted the overall context. The design will be emphasized on creating an infinite feeling of nature within the limited site area.

The transition from the original interior space has been realized by a compact and modest planning layout of the additional portion. The bright openness of the new bedroom and living space ensures the sufficiency of natural light. The building is also a narrative container which promotes people's activities. From dynamic to static, people can feel the endless change of the nature within the site area. The modesty of the design reflects the Chinese architectural philosophy - the integration between human and nature. The design fully respects human scale, which is another key strategy of the project. It creates a harmonious spatial atmosphere between people, architecture and nature.

The design significantly improves the natural light condition in both of the existing and the new wings. The design will diversify people's feeling towards the entire atmosphere. The variation of people's feeling towards the inside and outside has been realized by their experience of space and time.

The architectural scale of the building addition corresponds that of the original building, which avoids the negative impact towards its surrounding neighborhoods. The design's modestly scaled, which allows it to fit comfortably into its suburban settings. The concept of skylights has been developed around improving the quality and character of natural light in both the existing interior and as a defining element in the new addition. The control of natural light adds another delightful dimension to the warmth of the space. The variation of the roof style further enriches the hierarchy of the interior space. The flat roof reduces the direct sunlight in summer and blurs the boundary of inside and outside.
Section B-B
The design of the backyard space creates a completely different spatial experience from the front courtyard. It establishes a rational relation between the building addition and its enclosed neighborhood, which avoids the negative visual impact towards its surrounding residences . The backyard creates a quite atmosphere within the site. It prevents the privacy and enables another possibility for people's activity.

Universal Dance Year: Jan. 2015 Location: Bamiyan, Afganistan Site area: 26,000m² Building area: 2,200m² Category: Cultural center competition Type: Cultural center, Public Status: Competition
Zilong Lu 2017 Portfolio
The Bamiyan Cultural Centre will focus on promoting cultural awareness among ethnic groups as a way to advance reconciliation, peace-building in Afghanistan. It will challenge cultural barriers, reaffirm Afghanistan’s remarkable ancient history and enforce culture as a foundational component to Afghan national identity. The Centre will not only function as a facility to unify, represent and study Afghan culture, but as a space to exchange ideas, congregate and establish a vibrant community for the future. The design will be able to enrich the community life through programs and cultural events such as festivals, films, drama, music, dance, etc., that reflect the culture of the region and use these forms of communication to disseminate information and to raise awareness on cultural heritage. It also provides a venue and organize a variety of cultural, educational and recreational programs for the public to learn and appreciate different facets of Afghanistan’s heritage, history and cultural context. The design will also be to serve the community by establishing, maintaining and operating a unique facility and provide services that contribute to the vitality of the community. It will be going to redefine the relationship between people and site, as well as the boundary of architecture and its context.

The design fully respects the existing site condition, which is able to correspond the nearby urban streetscape and the surrounding natural scenery. The building will not be an isolated object on the site, but integrated with the entire atmosphere. The design will be naturally embedded into the site by echoing the local architectural language, which also performances a new gesture towards the local environment and culture.

Courtyards and landscaping are prominent aspects of the built environment in Afghanistan. The courtyard of the design extends the built lived environment, obscuring the distinction between indoors and out, and extending the space of sociability beyond built structures. The semi-open performance hall is one of the core spaces in the design, which enables the diverse local performance art interact with the background landscape scenery.

How to understand vernacular architecture within a contemporary architectural context is another issue that the design will be focused on. The local architectural spaces will be reinterpreted by combining the modern construction technology with the local materials and building methods. The design is not simply duplicating the local building forms, but recreating the atmosphere of Bamiyan local architecture by the modern architectural methods. Local mud bricks and timber ceiling will be adopted together with the modern materials, in order to realize the idea of integrating the modern and local.

Urban compression Year: 1st semester, 2010 Location: Northcote, Croxton, Thounbury Category: Studio work Type: Housing, residential Mark: Distinction
The progress of urbanization has been creating great opportunities to every inhabitant of our cities, but in the meanwhile it also brings lots more confusions to us. Our city is getting bigger, the cost of living is raising, people have to move to the remote suburbs. However the inconveniency of the public transportation and the lack of public infrastructures have made people disconnected with the real urban life. It also makes a big social insecurity. The aim of the project is going to emplace 100000 inhabitants around 3 train stations within 1000m, without demolishing any existing building within the site area. The design will be going to redefine the relationship between the inhabitants and their city, which also further responds the series of problems that caused by the vast progress of urbanization.

The site has been chosen along the nearest tram line which is parallel with the proposed train line. The aim of the design is going to create a more convenient lifestyle to all the inhabitants. The design itself will also create a more relevant relation between the inhabitants and the region they will be living in.

What is about good architecture? What is about good cities? That's the question every architect concerns about. The answer is really simple to me, a convenient city is a good city, because it saves people's time. Once the time has been saved, all the unnecessary consumptions can be reduced. Sustainability is not only about low carbon, high tech building facade, even landscapes. The central of sustainability is to save people's time and create a more intensive urban life style.

The ocean Year: 2nd semester of 2015 Location: Wahiki island, New Zealand Category: Studio work Type: Public ( meditation & reflection space ) Mark: High distinction
The ocean “I’m walking on the endless field, I want to see the vast ocean. I’m looking for the trace of time under light and shadow. I can hear the call from the timelessness. I can feel the lost within myself. My soul doesn’t belong to me anymore. I’m breathing the ocean and the earth. Our world is fine, by the ocean. You know the way it is in life, it’s so hard to live up to. This time is for real. It helps the heart to heal. Don’t tell me where to go. Here comes the wave, down by the ocean. I’m standing on the end of the world. I can go anywhere but nowhere. I can see and hear anything but nothing. Please lead down to the earth. Please don’t leave alone with the sky. The world of loneliness. The world of timelessness. ”
This is the design of an monumental space for the past Chinese poet - Gucheng. The purpose of the space is to allow people to find and reflect themselves. As living in the modern society, people always get lost within their life. Our desire is becoming bigger, but we seem to forget about our faith and the meaning of our life. The site is located in wahiki island 20 km from Auckland city. That is the place where the poet lives in his final years, before he died in 1993. The design merges the surrounding natural context with the actual space as a whole. The variation of the light, the punctuation of the journey, the change of the spatial scale, all the architectural language will be able to evoke people to reflect themselves.

This design is a new exploration of architectural threshold. The abandoned prison of Coburg will be reactivated by the new housing design. The street space, the informal market and the semi-exterior decking has been merged with each other by the innovated threshold space. The design is also a new experiment of the Asian spatial spirit within the western urban context. The public and private spaces permeate with each other, and the building is integrated with the site as a whole. 32

This, is Atherton Garden ! "Contesting gentrification via a contested public" Year: 1st semester of 2017 Location: Atherton garden, Fitzroy Site area: 80,450m² Category: Residential, public, renovation Type: Mixed used Status: Major project of master program
37
Zilong Lu 2017 Portfolio
Atherton garden is an experiment of the post war modernism architecture, with the contemporary utopia architectural idea of 4 towers in the garden. Atherton garden had an optimistic start, but soon the enthusiasm for this radical residential area turned into fear-for-the-unknown. Gentrification becomes as a social barrier between the low income people within Atherton garden and the rest of the city. By superimposed the Chinese micro district planning as my personal position onto the site. My thesis will be aiming on bringing the public life and aboriginal culture back to Atherton garden. Retreat the existing site as a civic park. Linking the 4 existing towers with new housing units. Discovering the value of the existing, using different architectural interventions to reactivate the existing site condition. 38

This is a collaborative project which I did in Peddle Thorp Architects. I was working on this project as an architectural assistant during the conceptual competition phase. My duty was mainly about participating the conceptual design and planning scheme. My idea of the central courtyard is one of the key ideas in this project. For the final presentation works, my part was to do the 3D modeling for the shopping mall and hotel, produce the images for both of the interior and the exterior spaces and diagram making.

Traffic circulation integrates with the urban grids and links different public spaces
This project will be going to further exploit the fundraising commercial value of the site area. The design of the urban complex has been conceived as a new public "platform", which is consisted by the functions of office, hotel, retail commercial and leisure. It will also be going to effectively enhance the quality of the urban lifestyle towards the entire region. The design corresponds the existing site context by the rational arrangement of public and private spaces, which also responds the traditional Chinese architectural idea of creating an inward enclosed space.

Scenical value
The design will be going to magnify the scenical potential of the site, which also corresponds the existing skyline of the surrounding buildings on elevation. It will also be going to minimize the negative visual impacts on its neighborhoods and functionally integrates with the nearest hotel.
The natural light and landscapes will be invited into the interior spaces. In order to create a harmonious spatial sensibility to people. The soft materials such as timber will be used within the interior spaces. The generous transparency of the interior space promotes the integration with the exterior urban space as well as the natural environment.
