FASHION X ARCHITECTURE

LUXURY

What relationship between luxury fashion retail and architecture design? What can architect do for luxury store? The cooperation between OMA and Prada indicates that more opportunities can be created for architect within fashion space.

John Pawson said” despite the rise of online shopping, there is still a demand for quality retail spaces, as they offer a different experience.”

In FA Prada men’s and women’s showcontinuous interior in 2017, AMO used several one meter high continuous wooden partition to divide the interior into a series of consecutive sceneries. In order to create a more realistic and domestic space, various ordinary materies were introduced into the interior space. For instance, terrazzo, tiles and formica. They amplified a sense of domesticity. Moreover, with the use of beds and benches, they define a rhythm for the overall composition. The rough concrete walls are in sharp contrast with the soft wooden partition. The layout creates multiple perspectives for each guest. The boiseries, with their limited height, separate the whole room into various areas, while still allow the views of audiences intertwine with models. The visual connection, sounds and eye contracts through the differ area.

P. 6

The boundary between luxury retail space and art space is getting blurred, they often exist as a gallery or exhibition space, telling the story to visitors. How to convey the narrative and lifestyle to consumers through the atmosphere, light and materials is the crucial of the design. Chanel once said “Fashion is architecture, it’s all about proportions and divisions”. In the design of fashion retail store, not only makes the space becomes the garment of fashion, but also determine the quality of store by the spacial proportions.

STACK - TRANSFER Escalator always play an important role in shopping. It connects different levels, efficiently brings customers to each individual space. People moving, searching or wandering to purchase. Hence, The purchase behaviour controlled by the product. What if the relationship between consumers and goods is reversed? The huge “Stack device” carrying hundreds of products, is controlled by customers. Each track can bring various products to consumers like an escalator. This installation represents an immersive space dominated by electronics. In contrary to the smallness of men against the technology, all virtual worlds are programmed and operated by human. Each track can bring various shoes to consumers like an escalator, people no longer need to constantly shuttle between each individual space. Each display device enables comprehensive observation of shoes for customers in different position Each shoes are fixed to the board. For instance, the Hypelev levitation stand, through the manipulation of electromagnetic currents, allowing the shoes to suspend in mid-air.

VIRTUAL DEVICE The method of using virtual technology to gigantic objects can enhance the immersive experience, strengthen sensory reception and spatial atmosphere. In Blade Runner 2049, huge virtual robots appear in the crowded street, successfully enhance the science fiction elements of the movie. This method is also used in KAWS marketing strategies. “When an item is small, consumers only regard it as a toy. However, when the item is huge, they will but it as an artwork” Said by Karnes. Gigantic products can increase the artistic value of commodities. In Alphn 60, we can also apply this strategic to show our products through virtual reality. Moreover, applying Mixed reality experience on virtual fitting. To be more specific, customers can put on the VR headset while trying on shoes, the virtual environment will change following the type of the shoes. For example, when people wearing a leather shoes, the background will change to ballroom or office. Meanwhile, the clothes and hairstyle can be changed too I want an information receiving device can be installed on this Stack device, which can receive hints provided by the user, such as gestures or voice. For example, in virtual reality, a variety of clothing combinations are provided with numbers, 1 is for black suits, 2 is for white suits and 3 for pink skirt. The receiver can capture the user’s choice through projection technique. P. 22

Viewing VR is starkly different than watching a traditional film: With conventional movies, the director dictates your focus of attention. An aerial view cuts to a medium shot cuts to a close up— giving you no say in what you see. But virtual reality puts you in charge. The headset allows you to observe any aspect of a setting and, in some cases, even affect the way the story unfolds depending on where you look.

Space Popular, FREESTYLE The earliest, architecture stood in one place and could nor be transported. But the limited state ended 500 years ago as building can be print at book and started to travel virtually. But in this transparent process, aesthetic play an important role. Therefore, the subjective explanation dominates the transmission of the space, which restrains further transferable between individuals. Hence, the FreeStyle exhibition uses mixed reality experience, allows people have a dialogue with architectural history. “Vitual worlds will intensify our interest and appreciation of physical environments”, said by Lara and Fredrilk in 10 propositions for virtual architecture. This strategy also suit at retailing, some retail store introduce mixed reality experience to enhance shopping experience. For instance, The Topshop created a immersive and engaging window installation through physical design and virtual reality. The interactive experience combining real touch and virtual vision enhances the customer’s shopping experience and stimulate the desire to buy.

MIX The concept of the mix reality display device is to combine the floating and projection technology. Let the virtual data and real product overlap in the air. The represent shoes provide visitors with a new form of interaction, they can manipulate any virtual level on the physical shoes and add different layer like material, history data. Even they can redesign the shoes by virtual manipulation. The device base can be covered with anything that doesn’t stick to magnets. For instance, wood, mirror or plastic. However, this systems use an optical sensor to detect the position of the floating disk. So the cover of the base should keep a hole for the sensor to see through. The base cover the Ventilation and electric system. A levitation module can generate heat when working hard. Therefore it is important to have a ventilation system under the base magnet. The base magnet has the air intakes and exhausts, worked by fans. They suck up the cool air in one place and blow out the hot air in the other. Moreover, the small feet ensure the bottom ventilation and heat dissipation. The carrier magnet is cover by the actual shoes. it allows the shoes floating and rotating in the air. The virtual shoes which projected by the holographic can display more information about the actual shoes. For example, displaying about what changes have been made to the shoes over a period of time or displaying the shoes’ materials that can be zoomed in and out.

PRINCIPLE The base idea of the levitation device is to make a magnet float by holding it up with the repelling force from another magnet. But the floating magnet tends to rotate around, flipping itself to attract to the other magnet. In order to keep the magnet stable, an external force must be restrained. Therefore, we need to add some electromagnets to repel the floating magnet back into the centered position, a sensor which can maintain the floating magnet also need to be equipped on the base.

PROJECTION TECHNOLOGY Free-floating holograms that require no glasses, devices or other lenses between the human eye and the effect, and where 3D objects can be viewed and interacted with from different angles. Conventional TV screens use electricity to power millions of small light-emitting pixels. As each pixel continuously shines its light in all directions, only a tiny fraction of the light targets the viewers’ eyes, essentially leaving the additional light and electricity wasted. The Light field display works by selectively directing the light from its pixels directly to the eyes of the viewers.

MID SEMESTER Immersive experience is a way to let consumers to examine, touch and interact with goods and services. It convert static building into virtual experience. In blade runner 2049, Ridley Scott created a lot of science fiction immersive space, Walkway of light and dark transition, floating stairs in a dark space. To some extent, dim space and light can better immerse people in the feeling. The five senses of human are our connection to the outside world. The interesting thing is that when one of the senses is weakened, the other senses will be amplified and vice versa. In this area, different digital backgrounds will be projected into the fog through the light board, forming a virtual light band, and people can shuttle between different scenes in the same space. Moreover, pedestrians on the street can see the indoor virtual reality scene through the translucent facade.

As for the shopfront, Dividing the facade into three parts through the interior space. The entrance on the ground floor is receded to attract people go into the store. The air tunnel and filters are exposed, so people can intuitively see the operation of the machine. The space on the second floor surrounded by translucent glass is the showcase stage of this store to the city. And the last one is the shopfront section.

John Pawson said” despite the rise of online shopping, there is still a demand for quality retail spaces, as they offer a different experience.” The boundary between luxury retail space and art space is getting blurred, they often exist as a gallery or exhibition space, telling the story to visitors. David Chipperfield usually use high ceiling with relatively narrow space in museum exhibition, this spacial proportions allows visitors to focus on the exhibits and elevate the space quality. 1. The luxury store in Milan design by John Pawson merge the minimalism, using simple plaster surfaces and grey stone floors to create a gallery-like store. “The space appears rigorous, monumental” explained the brand. “The vision of the intervention is not simply to create a container for the product, but a spatial narrative that enhances the experience of proportion, surface, and scale.” 1. SECOND FLOOR - VIRTUAL NETWORK

E. DEVELOPMENT. ZIMENG ZHANG, A LAB WITHINA A STORE. STORE MSD ALPHA60.

The studio on the top is clad with glass screen which the transparency can change with the function of the room , when the space is used for urban virtual interaction the facade will turn into a highly transparent AI screen. There is only one furniture which covered with plate grey plaster in the center. Users can touch on the screen to see the information of material, texture or design concept of the different garments. Also, the garments they choose and the virtual models of the users will appear on the AI screen with urban context, then they can experience virtual try on by changing texture, colors and so on. Another theme is environmental simulation interaction, the facade will turn into a semi-transparent screen. The spray system on the ceiling can create an artificial fog so that different virtual scenes can be projected throughout the space, and users can adjust the fog density, background, lighting and sound through the control panel to achieve an immersive interactive experience. For the space design, Simplifying the spatial form to emphasis the virtual interactive and spatial quality. And the lightness of the facade stood in sharp contrast to the thick plaster clad roof . The main colour comes from the gray and white, meaning the virtual garments can take centre stage.

Previously, my design concept was focus on how to create an immersive customization and fitting space from virtual visuals. Then I was inspired by the Motion-capture artwork, and combined it with electronic sensors and motion tracking to try to redefine the fitting experience from a visual and tactile interaction.

CUSTOMIZATION AREA: Customers can use screen controllers to adjust the size of various parts of the garment. For instance, when the user feels too much pressure on the shoulders, they can operate the control handle to adjust the size of the textile on the shoulder part, then the processor will send the signal to the Bluetooth receptor, which will convert the signal and then send it to the pressure regulator, hence reduce the pressure accordingly, repeatedly to achieve the most comfortable size.
