NORTHAMPTONSHIRE LEADING THE UK ECONOMIC RECOVERY This document sets out the opportunities for investment in Northamptonshire. At the forefront of the UK’s economic recovery, the collaborative and innovative approach of the county’s partners towards business investment, support and funding, infrastructure and skills is testament to Northamptonshire’s business integrity and ambition for growth.

Northamptonshire is already a successful base location for numerous national and internationally known companies such as Barclaycard, Avon Cosmetics, Carlsberg UK, Travis Perkins, Weetabix, Yusen Logistics, Eddie Stobbart, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Mercedes-Benz, Scott Bader, Tata Steel and Cummins Engine Co.

At the start of 2013 the economic think tank, Centre for Cities, named Northampton as the place making the best economic recovery in the UK. Since then investment by companies such as Decathlon, Sainsbury’s and technology park developer, MEPC at Silverstone, further accelerate Northamptonshire’s continuing business and investment growth. Furthermore, The University of Northampton is a top 50 university with 96% student employability.

Central to the UK, Northamptonshire is at the heart of the nation’s transport and business infrastructure, providing unrivalled access to a substantial UK market and quick links to continental Europe.

In 2012, Northamptonshire was named ‘Britain’s Most Enterprising Place’ (Department for Business, Innovation and Skills Enterprising Britain competition). Northamptonshire supports business and business investment. In 2014 the county will begin to implement a new £100m programme of investment and in so doing unlock substantial new opportunities for private sector and institutional investors.

HIGH PERFORMANCE TECHNOLOGIES

The Northamptonshire High Performance Technologies Network is a unique concentration of industries that specialise in the design and manufacture of innovative technologies, engines and products, incorporating low carbon engineering and the application of advanced materials and composites in sectors such as automotive, motorsport, aerospace energy and defence. This distinctive network of over 800 companies form a comprehensive supply chain that significantly contributes to the economic growth of the county and enhances its prominence within the UK’s world-leading High Performance Technologies industry.

HIGH PERFORMANCE TECHNOLOGIES INVESTMENT FUND The programme offers support to eligible High Performance Technology (HPT) businesses in the form of grants of up to ÂŁ1 million. Companies operating in the HPT sector that are focussed on innovation and growth and have a project planned that needs additional financial support and will consequently create jobs are likely to benefit from the fund.

MAJOR GROWTH SECTORS


LOGISTICS Northamptonshire’s central location make it one of the most accessible areas in the country. It is the UK’s leading logistics and transport hub and is a major growth sector in the county. Northamptonshire Enterprise Partnership (NEP) offers a bespoke portfolio of business support services designed specifically to support the logistics industry and to help it invest and prosper in Northamptonshire.

An enviable regional infrastructure has dedicated terminals for both rail – Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal – and air freight including Heathrow, London, Luton, Birmingham and Nottingham East Midlands Airport - the UK’s largest pure air freight terminal. With easy access to the M1 and A14, the county is ideally situated for logistics and supply operations. Northamptonshire is also investing heavily in its telecommunications and broadband infrastructure. The major ports of Felixstowe, Southampton, Liverpool and London Gateway are all within three hour’s drive and travel to London takes less than one hour by train.

FOOD & DRINK

The Food & Drink sector in Northamptonshire is a significant employer with some 46,000 jobs supported by prospering businesses including Weetabix, Carlsberg UK, Whitworths, British Pepper and Spice and Alpro. The sector is worth ÂŁ1.5 billion to the Northamptonshire economy.

The county is responsible for 10% of the UK’s total wheat storage, milling and processing capacity. It is also home to more than twice the national average number of food and drink manufacturers many of which produce high end, award-winning, specialist products for international audiences. Northamptonshire is also home to the annual Carlsberg UK Northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards which serves as a strong platform for celebrating the range of businesses in this sector as well as an integrated Made in Northamptonshire programme of activity.

CREATIVE & CULTURAL

Northamptonshire’s ambitious and entrepreneurial Creative Industries sector is still experiencing growth even in this challenging economic climate. Currently employing 1.8 million people, the sector is forecast to produce GVA growth of 31% and employment growth of 33%. It currently contributes £97 million GVA to the local economy.

Northamptonshire’s population growth, location and competitive cost base means that it is in a strong position to attract financial and data management services. It is also able to draw on a large pool of skilled graduates from The University of Northampton and other major universities all within a one-hour drive including Oxford, Cambridge, Warwick and London.
