Volant Patricia Urquiola, 2007 Description Armchair and sofas. Upholstery is flame-retardant and stress-resistant polyurethane foam in varied densities and polyeter fiberfill. Frame/base is tubular steel with chrome finish. Covers are removable.
Volant represents a defining state in Patricia Urquiola’s research and exploration into the skin of objects. Volant’s skin is its upholstery which “has something of a Balenciaga gown or a Shogun’s robe,” as Urquiola describes it. The composition is simple and self-sufficient. The base frame is a trapezium that follows the lines of the backrest and seat, offering a sharp contrast of regular and irregular shapes. Light and fresh, Volant is a premier example of Urquiola’s ability to transform fabric into complex design.
