l i b r a ry +. . U3 Comprehensive Studio, Fall 2015 Instructor: Éric Gauthier In collaboration with Samer El-Richani Location: Chambly, Québec, Canada Duration: 4 months
The historic city of Chambly needed a new library and the McGill architecture class of 2016 were requested to work in pairs to develop comprehensive design proposals and preliminary working drawings with the help of structure, MEP and lighting consultants. The site condition includes a canal, a historically significant castle, luscious park network and Hydro Québec electric pylons adjacent to the site. The teams were asked to read the book “Library without books” to guide our vision for a secondary program that would set the theme for libraries of the future.
l a n d sca p e p ro c e ssio n
Accommodating for both car and pedestrian access through the park network was essential to the circulation of the project. Parking for the project was concealed within the plinth of the project, which frees up space for the design of a park, along with the pavilion and the gatehouse forms the processional element of the project.

A rt sto r a g e U3 Non-Human studio, Winter 2016 Instructor: Fabrizio Gallanti Individual project Location: Square Phillips, Montréal, Québec, Canada Duration: 1 months
The Architecture for Non-humans studio argues that there are possibilities for architecture to maneuver within our contemporary condition. Accepting the de facto victory of the “typical plan”, the bureaucratic and simplest means of translation of activities into space, the project reflects on form and appearance, almost entirely detached from the expression of internal uses. By counter-intuitively situating a large scale storage facility in downtown, a building type that is typically mundane and technical is forced to negotiate with the urban fabric. The design strategy concentrates on the building envelope as the principal tool to intervene into the urban context, and the key element of the mediation between exterior and interior, which houses a complex technological apparatus supporting efficient performance.

AMAL SCHOOL مدرسة األمل U2 Studio, Winter 2015 Instructor: Prof Ipek Türeli Individual project Location: Reyhanli, Hatay, Turkey Duration: 4 months
Since Amal school will be one of many schools operating in the local area, an analysis of schools in the region was performed. Al-Salam school is an existing refugee school run by the Syrian kids foundation, their work served as our case study to better understand the refugee crisis and its effects on children.
Research, pedagogy and c u r ric u lu m d e sig n
Amal for Global Citizens is a bilingual alternative school with a mission to provide accessible education to refugee children so they can one day become integrated, competent and ambitious adult immigrants. Located on the outskirts of the Turkish town, tuition is free, and admission is open to both Syrian and Turkish students who arrive on Amal school buses. An alternative, grade-less curriculum with changing class sizes becomes manageable with flexible classroom configurations, enabling efficient allocation of teaching resources, while outdoor canvas shading and solar panels on zig-zag roof optimizes running costs. Amal school offers large social gathering space, as well as Internet, computer and library facilities to the local community for free. Volunteers run and fund the school via websites such as Kick-Starter by training students to effectively use social media. Stringing the entire school together with Super Mario themed play spaces, Amal honours the sense of humour in perseverance and fortitude.

The design of the playground was inspired by themes found in the game Super Mario.
. Winning the game requires the player to never stop trying, no matter how many times they fail, it is a metaphor for the refugee children’s journey to obtaining education and happiness.

Mars Digital representation course Instructor: Leslie lok In collaboration with Iris DBDK Location: Mars, Solar System, Milky way Duration: 2 months
This project was an exercise of modeling terrains using Grasshopper on Rhinoceros as a part of the digital representation course. A 2D image of a martian landscape (shown on the left) was used as a visual reference to create the 3D terrain model, upon which we designed a martian promenade. The terrain model tried to emulate the ridges of alluvial flow towards the mounts. The density of the ridges and distance between them as parameters. The shape of the pavilion is interpolated from the points of peaks and valleys of the terrain model and used as a base on top of which space strusses were built.

d i g i ta l mo ld + deling Architectural Modeling course Instructor: Michael Jemtrud, Ziad Ewais, Brian W. Brush Team project: Iris DBDK, Zhiwen Sun, Cassie Yang, Emily Sun Location: Mcdonald Harrington Building, McGill University Duration: 2 months
The project will ask students to craft a ‘model/artefact’ and images that demonstrate the relationships at play between artefact-technology-world focusing upon the enabling capacity of technique and tool to allow for the creation of inter-subjective knowledge The shell forms the physical appearance of the object and the arduino board formed its functional aspect. A temperature and motion sensor were used as inputs to the arduino board, the user’s body temperature will activate the system, resulting in changes in the colour and pattern of lights displayed.
