modernism

M

odernism - an art movement which started in the 19th century and finished in the early 20th. Surrounded by the chaos of industrialisation and world war, designers attempted to bring order and meaning to their work and society. Modernism strongly departures from tradition. Artists were interested in inovation: in new types of paints and other materials. They wanted to express feelings and ideas instead of trying to show what is real. Artist started to be very nutritious by rejecting eternal values and also they did not feel anymore that man is the most important measure of all things as neither is God. This movement combines clean edges and minimalistic design by using grid. During modernism movement there were many of different unique movements as Bauhaus, Cubism, Futurism or even Suprematism. Every movement had different style to play. One marked as expression of very bright colours, another one with minimalistic geometric shapes. In my opinion modernsim is not about showing how professional you are in certain sphere but about exploration and experimentation on the work paper. I prefer modernism style rather then postmodernism. My own magazine has modernsim flavour.I use minimalistic structure, as well as some geometric shapes to liven magazine design:not to be very simple.

“Never mistake legibility for communication. David Carson

postmodernism

P

ostmodernism - is a late 20th century design movement, which begun when designers sought to challenge constraints imposed by modern principles and ideology. Postmodernism was entirely different to modernism, but it would not excist with out it. It is a way where designers can easily represent their thinking about subject. It was reaction to modernism. It was like a rebel to it. The postmodern style is often assosiated with collage, pastiche and irony. They used no grid, a range of materials, expressive colours and also collages. Postmodernism conects low and high art: trained or untrained artist. Thus, postmodernism works includes irony, playfulness and expressionism. As during modernism movement, postmodernism have not kept up with other various movements, like minimalism, pop art, photorealism or digital art. One of my favourites postmodernism artist is David Carson. David Carson is an American graphic designer, art director. He is best known for his innovative magazine design, and use of experimental typography. He was the art director for the magazine Ray Gun, in which he employed much of the typographic and layout style for which he is known. His works stand out of others because of very unusual and experimental works. Most of works are photos mixed with home made typography. To the end, can be said that postmodernism was combination of other movements. 11

city in flux

C

ity in flux is the first ever project of the year. The idea of the project was to show city’s movement in our own chosen w a y . I always admired the people from the city or village. They always look very interesting to me with their own individual lifes, grey problems or happy secundes. For this reason I decided to include random people to my work and show city movement through people. For people pictures and photos I went to Huddersfield central market, to find some interesting stuff, for example old photos and etc. Because in my opinion any picture taken is already frozen life movement in itself, but it is also in a way a landmark showing the city’s every changing nature, does not matter if it is yesterday or even decades past. It is capturing the untold history of the city. As I like making collages, my final piece of work wanted to be a collage:to try myself in this project. Overall,to have one collage it is not enough, so, I decided to do a booklet of people.

earth artefact

T

he original Earth artefact, better known as Golden record were 2 golden records with notes about Earth sent in the universe. The idea of the Golden record was to show for some other inteligent life forms in the universe ( if people will ever meet it) that we excist and that they could gain some information about excisting culture and the all planet. Therefore, in my creation of the project Earth Artefact, firstly I was thinking what is different in Earth from other planets which are already known for humanity. After a long research I finally found what I really wanted to do with this project. I decided to think about Earth elements instead of human personality or attribute. As the result of research, I chose four elements of the Earth: ground, fire, air and water. With those four elements I wanted to show Earth difference from other known planets. The second reason why I chose is that anyone or anything would not excist with out those elements. My idea is represented with empty glass bottles where in every bottle are put a little fraction of the element. Closed bottles symbolise that these four elements are like a treasure, like a real artefact. A real artefact to show for aliens.

typeface This brief is for type transcrition was to create a new typeface that was inspired by the one artist work. My inspirational artist was Josef Brockmann - Muller. For my typeface I used black curved lines in different thickness.I wanted to create typeface which would have similar details like the selected work and also would remind never stopping movement of a city. I found it quite interesting and easy to do and also it was another good experience how to use a program.
