ARLENE BRAITHWAITE Cedar City, UT arlenebraithwaite.fineartstudioonline.com Arlene Braithwaite taught art education at Southern Utah University for 32 years. Upon retiring, she focused her full attention on pastel painting in the landscapes of southern Utah. She has participated in Zion’s annual art event for more than 10 years. “In my work I attempt to evoke the sense of time and place that makes each scene unique. Often, my biggest challenge is to capture the rapidly changing interplay of light and atmosphere on a particular formation. I have been called a ‘romantic realist.’ My attraction is to the dramatic and the transitory in the inanimate reality of rocks, sky and water.”

He’s influenced by the Taos Society of Artists and the American Impressionists. He strives to represent landscapes that have a timeless appeal and is especially fond of the colors, textures and light found in the West. “This dry wash has what I consider classics of western imagery – bright, intense light, strong color in the shadows, and the feeling of the hot dry air of late summer.”

These include the red and cream colors of the Navajo formation, the Twin Brothers as a backdrop for Spry Mountain, common flora and the idyllic Virgin River.”

J. BRAD HOLT Cedar City, UT jbradholt.com Brad Holt is a lifelong resident of Cedar City, Utah, not far from the Kolob Canyons section of Zion National Park. The cliffs and canyons of Zion have been a common theme for Brad, but his goals are to move beyond the subject itself, expressing his own inner vision through simplification and elegance in handling paint. “I return to Kolob, which continues to serve as a muse and teacher for my life-long study of the natural landscape. Some of my earliest efforts in plein air painting took place here, and after all these years I still feel that I am only beginning to really see it.”

MARY JABENS Cedar City, UT maryjabens.com Mary Jabens grew up in Montana. She’s enjoyed living in several western states but has a special love for the diverse beauty of southern Utah. Mary enjoys spending her time outdoors and is often found fly fishing when she isn’t plein air painting. My goal is to communicate with the viewer the joy I see around me. Listening to each painting to understand what should or should not be included is a lifelong endeavor. The colors and shadows of nature are a continual draw to me.”

ROLAND LEE St. George, UT rolandlee.com Roland Lee has drawn and painted in national parks for more than 40 years, but he’s best known for his watercolors of Zion. He owns a small cabin on Zion’s east side. When he isn’t painting, Roland is likely spending time with his large family or teaching workshops. He also served for many years as a board member of the Zion Forever Project, Zion’s official nonprofit partner. “The Pulpit is an easily recognized feature in Zion National Park, though many people don’t know its name. It stands stoically and faithfully across the Virgin River at the Temple of Sinawava. This is the first painting I have ever done of this stone feature, although I have painted in this part of Zion many times.”

He spends vast amounts of time on back trails, and enjoys conveying the emotions he experiences in nature through paintings and photographs. “Father 523 (wing tag J3) delivers a meal to Chick 1k. In November 2019, I painted and photographed the condors for several days gathering the plein air studies and photography used to create this endearing moment as Dad finishes feeding his newly fledged offspring.”

VALERIE ORLEMANN Parowan, UT orlemannart.com As a resident of scenic southern Utah, Valerie Orlemann loves trying to capture a realistic sense of light, color and place in the landscapes near her home. She studied art at the University of Utah and has received awards in several shows throughout the region. This is her first year participating in Zion’s annual art event. “The beauty of the Utah landscape makes me long to stop, look, and spend time with it. I immerse myself in a time and place, soaking up the light, shadow, form and color and trying to tell about it. The result is a collaboration – the landscape itself and my experience of it: a moment in time and my response in canvas and oil.”

HADLEY RAMPTON Salt Lake City, UT hadleyrampton.com A Utah native, Hadley Rampton focuses on painting the landscape outdoors with palette knives rather than using traditional paint brushes in her studio. Hadley’s technique helps give her work a spontaneous and singular look. She has participated in the Zion Plein Air Invitational on multiple occasions. “One of the many mesmerizing aspects of Zion National Park is its shifting light though the main canyon. A cliff formation that is bathed in morning sun will very soon be awash in shadow, then see its facing cliff enveloped in the afternoon and evening sun’s warmth. Before long, all is once again in shadow, resting for another day.”

KATE STARLING Rockville, UT kstarling.com As a resident of Rockville, Utah, Zion National Park is literally in Kate’s Starling’s back yard. Her paintings of Utah’s canyon country are informed by her background in geology and her experience working for the National Park Service. Although iconic scenery is readily available, Kate often depicts less obvious subjects and lesser-known locations near her home, capturing the sense of place, the mood and the effects of light seen in the moment. “This piece is based on field paintings I made from the tailgate of my truck. I was watching a summer storm blow in from the ridge west of Cave Valley, looking East.”

SUSIEHYER Evergreen, CO susiehyerstudio.com Susie has been a professional artist since 1976, maintaining a studio in the Colorado Rockies. She travels frequently to paint outdoors and enjoys searching for the abstract patterns of light and color which provide the underlying structure of a scene. “My original intention for this painting was to use the midday light to make a composition and structure of the big flat shapes. But I found that a bit later, after the light gets blown out completely and the shadows start being cast in the other direction, shadows and darks begin connecting in a compelling pattern throughout the composition.”

S UZE WO OLF Seattle, WA suzewoolf-fineart.com Suze has lived in Zion Canyon as an artist-in-residence, and she’s participated in Zion’s annual art event for many years. Her paintings are about human relationships to nature. She spends much of her time exploring lesser known trails and seeking interesting views, colors, and textures which are overlooked by most visitors. “Springdale residents are lucky not only to have Zion as their backyard, but the Watchmen in the front yards! I pluralize it because it seems to be more than one peak as seen from town, unlike the more typical view from the State Route 9 bridge. And because of its location – more in the open than the canyon, and angled southwest – its red battlements get some of the last light of the day.”

Thomas Moran: Zion Valley Southern Utah, 1917 Private Collection

WHEN WORDS DO NOT SUFFICE By Lyman Hafen For hundreds of years people have been trying to communicate what Zion Canyon means to them with symbols on rock, words on paper, and images on canvas. The early explorers and scientists did a remarkable job of recording in prose the geology, flora, fauna, and human history of the area. But even they never set out into canyon country without illustrators, photographers and fine artists in tow – to back up their words with amazing images. As executive director of the Zion National Park Forever Ancestral Puebloan art Project, I am an eye-witness, almost daily, to someone’s first encounter with Zion Canyon. I watch and listen as they stop in their tracks, look up, take a deep breath, and sigh something indecipherable as they exhale. It seems that for most people confronted by Zion’s towers of stone for the first time, words fail them. They stand transfixed and utter something like “Wow,” or “Awesome,” or “Unbelievable,” (often in a foreign language) and know that they have not come close to expressing what they feel. At a loss for the right words, they default to the camera, as if the only way to define what they are experiencing is to digitize it for later reference. As the old saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. 44
